      @@Tomostuneups not disappointed, I liked hearing the mods. Years ago I put a 1600cc engine in my 1300 Escort. They bought in stricter rules just after that with regards to mods in New Zealand. I got knocked back on my WOF (roadworthy) inspection so had to jump through all sorts of hoops, get an engineer to look at it for $300, all for 5 or 11hp extra which was within the less than I think 10% power increase.
      I was joking with a wrecker about my "big block" being knocked when a guy that worked there got all butt hurt that I had called my little 1600 a "big block". I told him it was just a joke and I already knew that. We live in a steep street that has rough chip which has a curve at the bottom that makes it easy to break traction. I heard a V8 do a burnout one day in the pouring rain when I was at home. He made it all the way up the hill and as he crested it there was a huge bang and silence. The car coasted to a stop outside my place.
      This clown had been doing it practically weekly, even in school travel hours with kids on the street. Heard it cranking over a few times, then a door and bonnet open, a few more cranks but you could hear he had murdered it. This was the days before cellphones and about a quarter of an hour later there's a quiet knock on the door. It's the same bogan from the wreckers. Asks me if we have a phone he could use, "no, we just moved in and there's no phone yet". I asked him "is that a big block" and he says yes. "Shame" I said as I closed the door.
      His car was out there for a few hours before he got back from his walk with a tow truck.

      Hi mate, thanks for subscribing to the channel. Be sure to checkout the full build along with a DIY engine build I’m releasing each Saturday at 10am AEDT with the A series we did on it.
      Super proud of my efforts on this car. Being the biggest build I have done, I feel it was a good starting point.
      Definitely upset the purists with some mods I’ve done, but the customer is happy with the end result, and that’s all that matters.
      As for the indicators that pop out, they’re called “trafficators”. We had the intention to get them operational but ran out of time with the build

    5:40 If it was mine, I'd punch a hole just above where it's hanging and install temp gauge in dash. Doesn't match the two rectangular gauges, but the speedo's round, so wouldn't be out of place. Instead of looking like an after market add on, it would look factory. And, it would be out of harm's (and knee's) way. Maybe owner will come around.

    • @Tomostuneups
      @Tomostuneups  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. The benefit of having it here is that it can be moved and doesn’t need to cut a hole in the dash, keeping it somewhat original. Good idea though putting it in the dash! If I had thought of that, I’d have suggested it to the owner. Hopefully he reads this and asks for it to happen 🤞🏼

    If you have the skillset,find a stronger rear axle rather than just change the diff.
    Halfshafts snap easily as I know from experience with a standard 1098cc.
    My van broke 3, the first by an MOT tester when I wasn't present, the second during an enthusiastic 3 point turn and the 3rd pulling out in to traffic.
    The van wasn't overloaded, just carrying a few tools.

    • @Tomostuneups
      @Tomostuneups  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a valid point! Any recommendations other than custom shafts?
      Given the owner is well into his 80’s and I wouldn’t imagine he’d break an axle given his driving style (also owns an Aventador for the fun side of life), the MM is just a blast from his past to relive his childhood.
      Did the MOT tester have to pay for it as it happened whilst it was in their possession?
      I guess it can happen at anytime as I once snapped the cv joint in Grace pulling out of a street with ease. If I had thought a little more in depth about this build, the finer details would have made the biggest difference.
      But, leaves the door open for further endeavors with the customer

    • @matthewjenkins1161
      @matthewjenkins1161 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Tomostuneups MOT garage were useless and never got a penny from them.
      I was only using the van for work, though I am an enthusiastic driver.
      They are known for it and from memory the MG Midget shafts might be factory hardened and slide straight in.
      If you have the skillset and your customer the budget, maybe change the axle and I think down under you have far more choice of small RWD cars to pick something from.
      The front swivels are another known weak point and Moggies would often be stranded with a front wheel disappeared up in to the arch, so just make sure they are not worn and remind customer to keep them frequently greased.
      Good to hear a fella his age is still having fun and wish him all the best from London, UK.

      @@matthewjenkins1161 thanks so much for your info.
      Given this is a vehicle I’d never heard about, let alone worked on before, it was all challenge to say the least.
      The more people I spoke to, I found out fairly quickly people were rather divided on the subject, either with or heavily against the build and it would be sacrilegious to do anything other than “keep it stock”.
      I ended up replacing the front stub axles and uprights as the old ones had seen better days, along with the full bush kit in the front end (not documented cus my microphone went dead and didn’t want it to look like a cheap 80’s dubbed movie with bad lip syncing).
      Knowing the shaft size, length and overall diameters of the diff, I would have been able to upgrade it to a small rear wheel drive replacement. Arghh, coulda, shoulda, woulda.
      Sorry to hear about the broken axles, by the sound of it, she’s still on the road and you’re enjoying it thoroughly!
      Like the other comments, I appreciate your input, advice and stories 👌🏼

      @@Tomostuneups No worries, first video watched and now a subscriber.
      Minis were my real passion and always fascinated me the differences on the Aussie cars, which I first noted on Charlene's "Willy" in Neighbours.
      Over here, the square fronted Clubman was released alongside the round nose Mk3, so had wind up windows and concealed door hinges.
      The Mk1 and 2 with external hinged doors never had wind up windows or the front quarter lights.
      I'm 49 now and not in great health, so my days of climbing under rotten Minis are over and I daily an X350 generation Jag XJ6.
      The Morris Minor is like the Mini or Beetle so plentiful even today, that you should be able to do what you like, without too many upset at you.
      There will always be some though and you'll never please everyone.

      We stuck with 8” drums for this build. After speaking with Colin, if we had done the disc brake conversion kit, we would have needed bigger wheels to clear the brakes, which then would have increased track above the legal limit of 25mm per side, deeming it to be illegal and unable to engineer track. Plus the cost was much higher and my customer wasn’t prepared to pay for the upgrade.

    If you can source a diff from an old, Major, Lancer, Wolseley 1500 the originals [not the later] had a 3.72, later models had maybe 4.3 and last a Minor 4.5, Reason was, Australians hate to change gears too often so they made mad revers out of them with a Minor 1000 diff. My Major broke 2 axles , parts man said the part number was different for Minor and Major shafts, but i doubt it.

    • @Tomostuneups
      @Tomostuneups  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ohh that’s handy!
      Colin from Sprite parts (my main supplier) had advised me about a diff centre replacement once the vehicle was together he could get for me from the states. The cost was over 1k AUD which sadly wasn’t in the budget to do to the vehicle and probably would have done it justice by changing it as the drivability would have been much better.
      Given how far in over my head I was with this build and not knowing all these finer details until the job was done, these few little details that are now coming to light, definitely would have just added that extra piece of mind to the build.
      Thanks for your info btw!

A bit sad to put such low gearing in just to make it "Town Car' friendly, [I threw my Major into reverse changing down from third to second on 3 occasions, no crunch going in, fortunately did not take my foot off the clutch pedal before getting into neutral] lesson learnt, do NOT put an extension on your gear lever because you think it will make it easier to use,STUPID.

    The OHV engine is definitely more efficient and will give you more power, but side valve engines are absolutely bullet proof. If you need proof of this, look at the ubiquitous Briggs and Stratton side valve engine and even the old flat top Ford (etc) engines.

      Well said sir! How many mowers run no cooling systems and/or side valves, loads! Don’t fix something that ain’t broken. In our case, he wanted more power and regardless of money, we would have ran out of extra power fairly quickly if we had stuck with the old engine. What a great alternative this turned out to be 😍
