    I had to drill out grub screws like this several times over the years, it is always fun!
    I hope everyone has a great Sunday 👍

    It may be easier using a left handed drill bit so that the set screw might come out at some point while you drill it out.

      Although that is a great method for threaded stuff that is no longer under tension (e.g. broken studs or bolts,) grubscrews are usually too tight for that to work. I like to drill small first to avoid work hardening while using the larger drill next.

    Just discovered your channel and I get a real sense of satisfaction watching those stubborn screws in your videos come out! I dread broken fasteners and its always a challenge to remove them without causing other damage. I'm usually so happy to remove a broken screw, I sometimes save it as a trophy! Thank you for sharing some very useful and time saving tips!

    Also try using a torx bit. Hammer it in so it will make it's own slots.

    Multiple great tips here! I've always been in a horrible mood whenever I had to drill out something and my tool experience is lacking 😂 The cutting paste is great to know about (I didn't know that existed) and then the tip w/ the diamond file is genius. Great way to finish the job at hand without having to buy a new bit. Going slow and being patient is important too... which can be difficult. Having a fastener get stripped or break off sucks bigtime.

    Whenever i encountered such sturbon screws id weld a rod on top of them n try to rotate.
    It works every time though it takes time!
    Nice to see an easier n faster way of doing it

    Drilling metal is always a fun time! I can't imagine what you'd do in some of those machines where there is no space at all

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the glass washing machines were the worst. Everything was stainless steel, you often had to lie down on your front and reach in. The environment was hot, humid and noisy, plus you had to wear helmet/hard hat, safety glasses (which often steamed up) and hearing protection! The job was a nightmare!

    I get most of these grub screws out the two easy ways. I use a Dremel small diameter cutting wheel to cut the top of the grub screw into a slot and then use a small flat head screw driver to unscrew the grub screw. You can also use a reverse drill bit (not a screw extractor).

    If I'm replacing the bearing, I'll just use a thin slitting disc in an angle grinder. One cut parallel to the shaft, one cut perpendicular to the shaft and prise off the section of the bearing collar with the grub screw in it.

    Can be worth giving the grub screw a good bash with a hammer and punch, though with fan blades on kit I work on I usually heat them up with the oxy fuel torch as not much room for anything else!

    What about if you cannot get a drill in the correct position, do you strip down the machinery to gain access

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the machine. Earlier in the video, I said that I have never had to drill out a grub screw on a taper lock bush, that is because they are normally made from cast steel, so if you hit them hard enough using a hammer they will break. Stainless steel bearings and shafts are much different, the helical gears not only use grub screws, but they also use key ways and key steel to hold them in position. This causes problems, as a new shaft would have to be machined on a milling machine to get the key ways in the correct position. Whilst a bearing might cost £5 - £20 a new shaft would cost hundreds of pounds and cannot be bought off the shelf. Normally when you perform maintenance on a machine, they need it back in production in less than 8 hours, unless it’s during a shutdown, which is normally 2 weeks. I guess it depends on what spare shafts you have available. At the last place I worked, they kept trying to reduce spare parts and questioned every purchase. For example, some machines had nip rollers, which applied masking to the sheets of acrylic. The nip rollers needed changing every few months (I believe it was £5000 for a pair of nip rollers to be recovered). You needed 8 needle bearings for the nip rollers (stock number 10598), but the purchasing department might have only ordered 6 due to costs. (reading this back- it looks like war and peace LOL), I hope it makes sense!

    When its the driil bit that makes the difference not the drill.... and of course the guy holding it....
    only place I got these is for securing gears to electric motor shafts on my old Radio controlled cars.... :)
    we used to thread lock em....and a little heat with a miny blowtorch used to help release em
    other than that it is easier to cut the gear off......
    Quality vid Chez as always.. :)

      Long story, but basically, I used to subcontract as a maintenance engineer. I worked for the firm previously for 20 years as an employee, then subcontracted to them when needed as a maintenance engineer for another ten years. They had a “voluntary” lateral flow test, which was to be at 09:30 on a Monday morning for the engineers (remember the plant runs 24/7, 7 days per week). I wasn’t letting someone, who was not medically trained shove anything up my nose or in my mouth, so because it was “voluntary”, I declined the test. I was then told that I could not use the canteens on site, but was not offered an alternative place to have my breaks (this resulted in one of the other engineers having his break at his bench, in the workshop). This was the straw that broke the camels back, so I got a bin bag and emptied my locker at one site, I then drove home and text the site engineer, along the lines of “I’ve had enough of this Bullshit- I’ll be calling in the next few days to empty my other lockers (at the other plant). I then went in, emptied my lockers and sold my tools to one of the apprentices (Josh- he’s been in a couple of videos). Since then, several other engineers have left the place 👍
