- In this unusual 2020 Christmas season we received our new tractor and took on a new business venture. We bought a bunch of yaqona and had to process it, but while we were processing it we ran out of water. But when the modern luxuries let you down you get an opportunity to go back to the way things were done many years ago. Thanks for joining us again and Merry Christmas!!

Ni sa Bula vinaka from the UK Waka family, I actually stumbled upon your blogs whilst doing some research on Fiji and thought wow this guy and his family is actually quite passionate about preservation of the village livelihood and the land. The fact you upped sticks and moved from Canada is a big ask, but its great to have a strong family ties in the land especially if you're starting up fresh. I watched the recent episodes of individuals setting fires to your new boundary land and I must say you got to get to the bottom of this problem buddy, seek help from the village elders as they can redicate and perhaps resolve the matter. I know what it feels like and I feel your pain experiencing it myself as a Rotuman born in Fiji. The fact that you are actually born in the country, and to be treated like a an outsider isn't fair especially coming back after years of living abroad to invest back in the motherland. Don't give up the struggle Keep calm and carry on with your mission.

In FIjian "Waka" means roots but more specifically it is usually used when referring to the roots of the kava plant. But we picked it because it was easy for anyone anywhere in the world to say and we are also (in a way) returning to our roots to pursue this brand's growth:) Curious to know what the word "waka" might mean in the Maori language?

@@WakaFamily yeah, here in Queensland, people are allowed up to 100 per gathering not including staff. Not sure about NSW or Victoria, as they're going through tough restrictions at the moment. It has been a difficult year all around. Hope your families in Canada are well & safe.

For our family homes in Tailevu & Macuata , we requested & received large water tanks from the District Commision Office. The requirement was to have a solid platform for the tanks. They are so needed when the public water supply gets affected. Stay safe.

Just a question: why did you weigh the grog before drying it? Or do you have separate prices for dry grog and the ones you did? How much did you buy for a kilo?
You can pay for it according to the green weight or the dry weight. Grog loses roughly 80% of it's weight once dried so it's whatever works better for the person selling. IF their in a rush to sell then you buy it cheaper because you will have to clean it, cut it, dry it, and sort it but if the seller has time then you buy it for a higher price once dry.

Hi am bit late but seasons greetings,happy New year, btw Iam a fiji Indian as well, since 35 years am living in Sydney Australia, and I have a small business as well, since covid-19, my finance business really really gone down and I was just thinking of a different venture, so I was thinking if I can ask you to supply kava to me in Sydney I can start a new business here in sydney.
And can be a suppler of kava to all the shops here, they are many many shops here who are interested and many fijian who are interested,we can do a deal properly if yes then I can apply for special import license here in sydney and that way ,it will be able to supply yagona.
