Mickey Steele used to be a customer at the towbar and trailer centre i worked in through the 90s. He used to buy parts for his boat trailer that he built himself instead of buying a ready built one. I was shocked to see his photo in O`Mahoneys Essex Boys book as i`d obviously heard all about the Rettendon Murders and had even read Bloggs 19 but never really clocked any photos of Steele in the papers, i even recognised his watch. He was a fairly regular customer and i more than likely also served Nicholls too. In Bloggs 19 he mentions trying to get a towbar for the Jaguar XJ he owned but the high price putting him off, my boss and the fitters hated working on Jaguars (i think the wiring was a nightmare to work with?) so i`d been instructed to vastly inflate the price on Jags to put people off using us (a normal towbar was around £100-150 and we quoted Jags at £600!) I may well have also served Whomes too but i had no memory or recognition of his face. But Steele was often in buying trailer parts, sometimes just a cash sales, others as a sale through his engineering company (MJS Engineering i think?) so he could claim VAT back. I always found him to be a decent guy, polite and fairly well spoken, looks and build wise he reminded me of a Rugby player. He most certainly wasn`t anyone i expected of being criminal let alone to his level and with him having a prison history.
My hometown being Braintree, Essex which was where Darren Nichols lived at the time too. I also knew a few people whos paths had crossed Nichols too, including a woman who was his neighbour at the time of the case. Literally NO ONE ever had good words about Nichols, the best being one mate who had known Nichols (RIP Lee!) In Bloggs 19 Nichols talks about doing thefts of the coin boxes on old school phone boxes. They used to bottle jack the coin box until it broke the mounting bolts and they could steal the change out of it. He talks about one occasion that the coin box smashed him in the head when the bolts broke and it knocked him out and his mate needed to drag him into the car before the Old Bill turned up (BT had started fitting alarms to the phone box coin boxes due to all the theft!) When i told Lee this he called Nichols a BS artist and said that had actually happened to HIM and not Nichols! Nichols was around 10 years older than me but had an extensive reputation as a liar and dreamer always eager to tell a BS story that painted him in a good light or as some kinda criminal mastermind (even though nicking coin boxes or using funny money was hardly gangster level haha!) The nicest thing i heard was that he LOVED hanging around with hardmen and gangsters as he felt some of that scary reputation rubbed off on him. That he got in WAY over his head with proper and very serious people too quickly and was then stuck there until he grassed his way out of the situation!
The other part was the bent copper involved with Nichols was already VERY well known around Braintree at the time and initially he hadn`t been named either but i KNEW it would be DC Bird as his rep definitely proceeded him haha! He was also dating the mother of a friend of mine and i remember the water damaged hash mentioned in Bloggs 19 and possibly Essex Boys too. The bent copper had clearly taken some either at scene or from the police evidence room to see if it was sellable. It was offered to me at a silly low price for an eighth, so i bought some and it was indeed utter shite and pointless to smoke as you didn`t get high from it. This was either part of the shipment that caused the murders or part of a batch that had been dropped by plane into a nearby reservoir? Both are mentioned in the books.
Theres also other bits and bobs that are known around here by us older lot (im 50 next year) that has always been missing from the whole story. I hope that one day EVERYTHING will be recorded as numerous people with interesting information have already died over the years and decades since it all kicked off.

very different john i watched on tv protesting his brothers innocence, jack wasn't no cold hearted murderer , he just got wrapped up in the world of one. Would have been an insult to mick as a man alone having 3 younger units trying to do you over.

In due course you will see Jack was the violent one not Steele Steele was threatened by Tate otherwise he wouldn't have done anything

Bernard would have been an awesome cop. It's all here bar the shouting. Steel was worried about what those three druggies were plotting up against him and it was a case of him or them. They lost. Herein endeth the lesson

Theres no denying they were there and involved heavily... who pulled the actual trigger is hardest to prove ...maybe nicholls was more involved himself than he's made out and would not be surprised if there is one even two more people involved at the scene that no one wanted to name. Some of this is facts some is just my opinion and you know what they say opinions are like arseholes every fuckers got one......unless someone emptys a pump action on you...then you could i suppose say not everyone has because your arse would literally fall out

Jack Whomes is the guy that did 25 years for killing them.
