Begode Extreme BMS bypass - how to and why

  • This is the first wheel from Begode with an actual SMART BMS. This is certainly a good thing however, it has introduced a few issues that have come up in the fast charging community. this simple procedure shows how to get around these issues and charge your wheel in a more reliable way.

A little speculation here: Begode is changing the way they do things. The old charge ports used to be hot so that the charger could read the battery voltage directly. Adam (Wrongway) stated fairly often that he thought this was dangerous, and Begode was the only one doing this. By putting a diode in the line from the charge port to the BMS, a short circuit due to some foreign object in the port is prevented. What that means is that for the charger to read the voltage, there must be a bleed resistor from a high voltage source so that the new blocking diode creates a voltage drop that charges the battery through the diode with a feeble current. The charger then reads this voltage and subtracts the nominal voltage drop across the diode. The old way of direct reading will also work if there is no noise on the power line. Simple things like a refrigerator turning on can produce enough noise to interrupt the measurement and cause a shutdown. Sometime next year, I expect the charger vendors will have their fixes in place and this problem will disappear. The side effect is the requirement to compensate for the voltage drop across the diode. This means you won't get a full charge and balancing because the old charger has been faked out. The diode is the simplest and cheapest way to fix the hot port problem, but not the only way. So, this is speculation on my part. This solution to someones fears has side effects. Yes, an infant could pop the cap on the old port and stick little fingers in there for a shock.

I admire all of your knowledge and sharing it here. I just want to plug, play, and ride but I know it would help me to get underneath things.

LOL, yea less than 4 hours. I haven't had that problem with my Extreme, but good to know your solution without having to figure it out myself (I would if I had too).

excellent. I still recommend skipping the switch.

@@roghaj Yea, though I have packs of switches easy as jumpers to wire in like you did. So far used one each on the beeper of my S20 and extra lights on my Extreme. (on and many on my guitar projects and other stuff like that). Of course you probably already know I'm a Space Cowboy! th-cam.com/video/C9IoI38LjwI/w-d-xo.html

PS: I busted the switch to the beeper. Thankfully it was in the off position so I don't need to bother fixing it. :D

So what happens if you accidentally set a roger charger to 140V and recharge a wheel with this mod? Will it actually reach 140v? (Did you test it?) Thx

bms of the battery packs should prevent it from charging, should be fine.

That's what I was thinking. While I do have mad respect for people who can do stuff like this, I'm not a very tech-savvy person, so I'd probably end up burning down my house. Lol
