JJ, they didn't use cast iron to boil the water. You could still see the small ring where it heated up the center only.
william tepe, the control is any basic induction cooking top, like the one right next to them. Normail induction cooking tops can at leat boil water.

I pre-ordered it. It came almost 2 months late. I’ve had it 4 weeks and I’ve used it once. The controls are wonky, the app is fine, but if your fingers are wet or greasy it’s a pain. The sous Vide claim is ridiculous. It’s NOT Sous Vide because it doesn’t circulate. So it’s just a pot of evenly heated water.
The “recipes” are lame and don’t seem tested.
And the videos are a rip off of the Chef Steps Visuall Doneness guides. Just a hot, trendy, mess(barely hot).

    • @ernestryles

Lmao. Sous vide does not need circulation. In fact, most high end and commercial sous vide cookers are effectively water ovens. Sous vide is actually one of the few things that the one top does well.

Bought an induction cooktop for ~$35 and uses 2000W (One Top is only 1500W) and it evenly distributes the heat, and pretty much works really well. It also cools down the ceramic top after cooking, can boil that same amount of water in less than 5 mins.

I tried the flour burning test and it was way better with their pan. Also, the sous vide function works pretty well. I don't always use it, but I don't use my slow cooker since I got it and really got into sous-vide. I would say, good not perfect product but you have to use their cookware.

    (1) How did the stainless steel pans do with the flour scorch test? I remember that the Breville Control Freak also showed a ring with a cast iron pan. (2) What time did you actually see the water boil with the One Top? (3) Did the Control Freak also end up with a middling boil after 19 minutes and did it also end up with a ring pattern in its boil?

    • @vincentarcher9012
      @vincentarcher9012 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      wanderingazn
Having re-watched the Control Freak video:
      (1) While it might have been more fair to do the scorch test on stainless steel pans with the Tasty One-top, the point of using cast iron is that it points out the hot spots of an induction cooker. Also, the scorch from the Control Freak had a visibly less prominent ring.
      (2) They stopped the boil test because the Tasty One-top clearly didn't have the power to reach a rolling boil.
      (3) The Control Freak reached a boil in just under 11 minutes, and from what i could see, it was boiling pretty evenly.

Because of the nature of induction it requires special pans but they say cast iron works. Here is an answer from the FAQ from Cuisinart: The One Top works with all induction compatible pots and pans. Don’t know if your pans are induction compatible? Put a magnet (a refrigerator magnet will do) on the bottom of the pan and shake your pan. If it sticks, you’re good to go. If it slides off easily, your pan may not work. Wondering if cast iron works? Hell yeah it does.

So, I feel like that flour burn test was unfair. The video they link at the end tests a $1800 cooktop that has the EXACT same ring pattern. It's very common to induction+castiron. I'm still disappointed by it's power output but come on make a fair comparison.

Are there any other portable induction cooktops with app control/monitoring? I mean like a real one with actual temps and no hotspots......

I got really excited to see how the app would have cooked the stake so I was really disappointed when they started freestyling it... why did they even bother to do it in the first place...

I like how they demoed a thin layer of flour as a poor man's thermal imager. Cool technique in a pinch. I'd still like to a FLIR camera image this device.

Should have added the butter when it said so, after all you want to test the device as is, including the software, adding your own knowledge might make it seem better than it actually is.

Water boils at 100ºC. It stays at 100ºC untill all the water has boiled. Latent heat its called.

I was watching a BuzzFeed video where they were using a Tasty whisk and it wasn't working. One of their chef producers told them they needed a better whisk, so apparently even the people at BuzzFeed don't like to use their products 😂😂
