      Jazi Jazi if you’re talking about someone from India then no (I think that’s rather obvious) but if you’re talking about indigenous peoples then it’s absolutely offensive and has been used as a derogatory term against indigenous peoples for hundreds of years and was especially very commonly used during the period where (unfortunately) residential schools where ragingly popular with certain schools having slogans like “killing the Indian within the Indian”. It has a dark history and should be avoided when talking about indigenous peoples.

    Thanks for the video Igor. I have lived in Canada for almost 4 years now, my experience however is a little bit different from what you have described here. Canadians have a great sense of humor, they enjoy sarcasm and dark humor like everybody in the planet... since after all they are HUMANS! I love making fun of Hockey and the terrible winters here with them and they actually enjoy it (it is one thing to be funny, another to be offensive and disrespectful). I also like to throw comparisons to the US with my friends and wait for their reaction! Canadians love their country and are proud of it, they have a thick skin, which you should have to handle the weather here :) Like in every place, there are people that are looking to be offended by everything, stay away from those people. I'm afraid that what is being suggested here is that you should "so blend" with the culture here that you'll stop being you, sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but that is crazy! I love being me and Canadians love diversity, even diversity of opinion. Remember, they key is to "assimilate" into the culture and respect and learn to love the distinctive things, not to annihilate your identity for the sake of "acceptance" by a certain group of people. Canada is diverse, that means you have all races, all religions and all political affiliations here well represented. It is a great country, it is not heaven though. ;)

    You can speak what ever language you like Igor. As a fourth generation Canadian, I can attest it's ok to speak on the phone in another language. It's impolite to talk on the phone when with friends in any language. But if you are walking the streets or in the mall, and you are alone, and you are talking on the phone, speak whatever language you like. ❤️🇨🇦 Live in Calgary but raised in Edmonton. The country is so large that each province or area may have it's own or different societal norms. Overall be polite and you'll be ok.

    • @mom.emma2010
      @mom.emma2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @RedWave 2019 You shouldn't though. We have two mom's at our school who speak Spanish. 🤷 I don't care when they speak it to each other. Now if I was part of the conversation, then I'd be uncomfortable.

    • @mom.emma2010
      @mom.emma2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @RedWave 2019 Context would help the conversation though. Are there specific times you speak Spanish? I mean there's certain societal norms one has to follow. 1) Don't talk too loud when on your cellphone, 2) don't make phone calls in restaurants, etc.

    • @mom.emma2010
      @mom.emma2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RedWave 2019 I think that should be ok. I'm ok with people speaking whatever language they want. I might be curious at first but I wouldn't be offended. If anything, I'd want to learn to speak Spanish. I used to have a friend in University from El Salvador. I didn't care when she spoke her native/first language. I have a lot of Chinese friends and I'm always learning their language, mostly Cantonese or Mandarin. As for the French speaking CANADIANS, it's easier for them to learn and speak Spanish. I found learning German to be easier and closer to English. So that's probably why that happens.

    I'm from a Detroit suburb and prior to 9/11 it took about 20minutes to be in Windsor, Ontario. I worked for a member of the Canadian Parliament and lived in Ottawa. Here are a few things that I observed as an Anthropologist. Courtesies are very important to them more so than in the USA. So keep that in mind with dealing with them. Go out of your way to hold open doors for them even if they are 15 feet away. Don't smoke in public. You will get passive/aggressive coughs and hacks from people walking by. Don't bring up Meech Lake Accord (they were trying to get a Constitution and it didn't happen) Do not refer to Native peoples as "Indian" if you are using a generic term "Indigenous" is your best choice. They are more politically correct than Americans. Even something slightly questionable can be seen as offensive. Do not litter. They have always been more environmentally aware. I remember in the early 90s they were already starting to recycle. When in Quebec or French speaking areas attempt to speak French they will appreciate it. When the Quebecois/Franco-Ontarians etc realize you are not a Canadian they will speak English. If you are Canadian in the French speaking areas they will expect you to speak French. They can tell the difference ;) Beer is a big thing there for many folks. Don't make fun of it or their Health Care system-those like Hockey are sacred cows. If you have never been to Canada check it out it's an awesome country with diversity and natural beauty and super people. Just an FYI every year around the fourth of July and Canada Day July 1 Americans and Canadians gather near the Detroit river and have a joint fireworks display. It's a joint celebration and party shared on both sides. Peace from a friend in the USA.

    Remember that when you arrive in Canada you are given quite a lot of freedom to learn and make mistakes regarding these cultural norms. But as you spend more time and improve your language skills, Canadians will let you know if you are slow to learn these norms. What is tolerated when you land from the plane might not be after a while, especially by the persons you see frequently, like at work.
    One key thing to remember, this is a country made up of minorities, and that was well understood by those in power... they also felt like they had little power since they felt like they were also in a minority. At least that was what every other minority was skilled at reminding them.

    I would like to mention that even though people don't appreciate someone forcing their belief system on them they will generally respect your right to follow your own customs and beliefs as long as you aren't infringing on their right to follow their beliefs. Canada is the only mosaic in the world, whereas the United States is a melting pot. In a mosaic this means you are encouraged to bring your culture with you to Canada. In Canada you are Canadian - (insert your nationality here). My Korean wife has been here 7 years and no one has ever discouraged her from being Korean, and thankfully so because Korean is part of who she is as a person.

    One thing about tipping... Yes, we tip, 15 % if service is good, or even ordinary. Which is a real pain because (in the province of Quebec, where I live) that means that your restaurant bill will be 30% more than the price on the menu as there is 15% sales tax (total Fed and prov taxes) plus the tip... Just insane.

      @@malyshevvasiliy9541 no difference what so ever. Using a credit car is just a method of payment, nothing else. There is no reason why it should be different. As a matter of fact some ( but very few) restaurants do refuse credit as the cost to them ( credit card can charge as much as 5 or 6 percent I’m told) they figure it’s just too much.

      If I pay with a card , a waiter brings a small payment terminal with NFC and I just apply the card to a terminal and don't press any buttons on it.
      So, how is it going in Canada when you pay with a card? Does customer press buttons in order to choose amount of money - w/tips or w/o tips?

    • @jeanjcaron
      @jeanjcaron 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@malyshevvasiliy9541 yes indeed before you insert or swipe your card you will be asked if you want to add a tip and even have pre calculate amounts, for instance it will ask if you want to add 15, 20, or 25%. But beware, this percentage will be calculated on the price including taxes... in Quebec it is easy to figure out what 15% is exactlly as the total bill will show the provincial sales tax and the federal tax (GST or goods and services tax) by adding them, that is your 15% right there. The paper bill will show those three amounts 1. Total price of food 2. Provincial tax and 3. GST.

    Canadian from Québec here...Never ever under any circonstance talk badly about the fact someone speak french in Canada. Language is a very touchy subject in Canada, especially in the eastern part of it and it has very heavy historical and political meaning you don't want to get into ! If someone speak french, respect it and even try to speak it, they will treat you with great respect for it and if they speak english, the same can be done. Also for my fellow Canadian, whatever you think about language and the souverainiste in Québec, being respectful to each other is more civilized !

    We (Canadians) are multi-cultural. This is good, but all of us born here promote our CANADIAN- ness first and foremost.
    -Don't be sexist
    -Don't be age-ist
    -Don't be racist
    - Have a sense of humour bordering on the wacky/warped/quick-witted/simultaneously self-deprecating and self-promotional..... If you don't "get" British humour, you're sunk
    -You can talk smack about hockey but be aware you will get flak... Putting down teams you do not like and those that do like them IS a national pastime, however
    - tip wait staff, hairdressers, drivers, gardeners etc.- any service person. You can give gifts to teachers, travel agents, the nice lady at your dental office.....not anyone in authority over you or your business
    - MOST Canadians do not care what colour/race/religion/gender/sexual orientation/political viewpoint/original culture, etc. you are, have, or come from as long as you are a decent person BUT what we DO care about is:
    For crying out loud!!- bathe frequently and wear underarm deodorant daily!!!! (Canadians do NOT want to smell your body odour!)
    -Winter happens, learn to love it
    -be polite- hold the door, let people in your lane, let someone else go ahead of you, smile, say Hello, apologize if you bump into someone or get in someone's way, be helpful
    -drink tea or coffee like it's essential to life, almost constantly, every day
    - don't be violent- never find a permanent solution to a temporary problem
    - embrace other people's perspectives and treat other humans how you would like to be treated
    - being friendly takes nothing away from you so try to spread joy
    🇨🇦❤ 🇨🇦❤ 🇨🇦❤🇨🇦

    Why is everyone so hung up on labels? If you live in Canada, you're Canadian first and your heritage, although extremely important, is second. Also, the name Indian was never meant as a derogatory title. It is was Columbus who used the name to describe Native North American people, as he truly believed he had reached India. Everyone seems to be so worried about political correctness which is ridiculous. I am a first generation Canadian, who when people ask me what I am, my answer is always Canadian. If they ask me my heritage, I will gladly tell them that as well. I am so glad to live in a country with such a marvellous heritage as Canada.

Dont just live next door to the store that sells food from your home country. Canada is a long ways from ethnic blending, an sometimes seem very district ethnic oriented. but the future generation can change that. My best advice to new folks. Join a rec sports group, Meet new folks. diversify your beliefs. Forget those old world beliefs that might segregate and network! Networking is the best way to learn about education, get hired, advance a career. It seems tough at first but keep doing your best!

    One important thing Igor forgot to mention: staring at others, especially strangers. While in some cultures staring is considered acceptable to a certain extent, in Canada this is not the case. While it's true that Canadians are open and welcoming, they can also be self-conscious and private, and staring at someone can make them feel uncomfortable. If you look at someone for more than a second or two, they may think that you are either looking at them in a sexually suggestive context or that there is something odd or weird about their appearance or clothing that makes them stand out in a negative way. For this reason, even if you are curious of what someone is doing, it is much better to take several shorter glances than one long stare, because looking at someone in an overly deliberate way will be quite awkward and can certainly make them uncomfortable.

Canadians are afraid to tell you how your acting so if they do then you must be really out of line and if you refuse to shape up then things will not be easy for you. As communities often talk to each other about people and it will only be a matter of time before you find your self not being treated so kindly at stores and shops of the area and people will stop talking to you.
