I teach a 3/4 combo in the SF Bay Area and was surprised to hear about your mask mandate being lifted, especially when you teach unvaccinated students. It’s great to hear that you are doing all you can to keep everyone safe. You’re doing a great job.
It's Ohio, Mike Dewine and his health department have been completely defanged by the legislature. They literally have no powers over COVID at all
The school in Texas we were at dropped mandates a year ago. It had no affect on cases. It's possible herd immunity had been met by then becuase it was a small town. I don't tell you this to start an argument or demate over mandates. But maybe hearing of a place where it did not cause increased illness or transmission will help with feelings of anxiety.

It’s going to happen everywhere eventually. Before it changed in NM, I was already planning to wear a mask teaching anyways. That is still an option. Very cool conference form, I like the student voice added to your conferences. Student led doesn’t work in elementary, I find myself still talking more than the kids.
Northwestern School District did lift their mask mandate back in June and July. Then the mask mandate came back at the beginning of the year. Northwestern School district is in Albion, PA

That must be a strange experience not to see students wearing masks in the classroom. Do you still have to keep your desks spaced for social distancing measures? Over here in California, my students wear masks and have three sided shields on their desks. No parents or other visitors are allowed on campus. In NY it's absolutely ridiculous, apparently as long as you wear a mask you are safe from COVID! School is literally completely normal except kids wearing masks! At that point I have to ask WHY EVEN BOTHER?!
Kids wearing muzzles upsets me beyond beleif.
Kids having to do active shooter drills bugs me beyond belief.

We just had our conferences, no in person but a choice of phone call or zoom. I had 50/50 and found the zoom more personable. For us we are still mask mandate inside but outside fresh air is encouraged. No visitors allowed on campus at all!!
You mention the STAAR test. Just wondering your thoughts on standardized testing?
My district lifted the mandate for high school starting on the 1st. It was funny because everyone complained about wearing masks and now that they’re no longer required to wear them, they still do, with the exception of few (maybe 10% of my students). I’m fully vaccinated and getting my booster over Thanksgiving break but I will still be masked. Love your tips for conferences. I wish they were all on virtual so I can share stuff online

Most teachers are absolutely terrified about this. I don't understand, I have been working since day one of the pandemic in person and I have NEVER gotten COVID. And no this isn't because I took precautions, I wore the worst mask possible, I don't distance, I don't mask off work, I do indoor dining, and I have traveled. About the only thing I did right was avoiding parties but I never liked that stuff before COVID anyway

@@malissac7966 It's funny at my university. Apparently the mandate is a complete joke, one day in class my professor just didn't wear one and of course I joined in and after that I decided to try it in my other classes and not one teacher has told me off. Doesn't stop 99% of people from complying anyway 🙄

Florida mask policies vary by county. Most are now mask optional. Other gathering spaces (such as churches) are also mask optional.
So crazy how things differ!
They don't differ, Ron Desantis has BANNED school mask mandates and it's a few liberal strong holds trying to hold out (Orange County looking at you)

My governor ended mask mandates the last week of school last year. It made no sense. We went all year wearing them, then not for one week. This year masks have been optional. I am vaccinated, but I wear a mask because my students are not. It’s crazy to me that masks aren’t required to protect the unvaccinated children. Luckily 5-11 can be vaccinated now.

Our states mask mandate is likely to be lifted soon and the school I'm currently at for my college placement has already been virtual with masks, so I'm not excited about it. To me mask are now hygienic and respectful not even for just covid.

Our masks were always optional for each student. Last year and this year….most teachers wore masks last year but we haven’t had to this year at all! It’s almost weird to see kids wearing them. Crazy how each state is different!!
Republican state I bet. I live in NY and our goveror is awful, she mask 2 year olds in daycare while she goes out and parties...
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv Republican state or not, just happy kids are in school learning face to face. Tired of the online teaching. KIDS need to be IN SCHOOL!!! So some are still wearing masks?! That was so “last year”. Our kids in my district don’t wear masks, and we have returned back to normal.
That is a little scary on the mask thing. Our students can take them off when outside, but I still wear mine. Kids come in real close to talk so I keep mine on. We have the plexiglass on desks, but they fall constantly as the spray from cleaning loosens the adhesive. They are also 3 ft apart.
I hope you’re feeling safer soon. In the UK we have never worn masks in primary (4-11 years). They were only expected in high school. It’s scary!

I been wearing my mask everyday at work. Maybe like 20 something students out of 500 something students in my building wear a mask. No cases, no problem; however when any virus spreads, it spreads well.
I still don’t feel 100% safe at work. I’m so cautious. I sometimes get little cuts on my hands from all the sanitizing and washing. I’ve gotten two colds so far this year. I always take covid test just in case. Just getting over one this past week.

So if you had no cases why are you still masking? If masks work why is Germany in a 4th wave of infection? They have had a medical mask mandate since LAST YEAR! Honestly it's time to give up, you are vaccinated (or at least I'm assuming you are) so you are protected from severe COVID preventing infection is literally IMPOSSIBLE! The ONLY reason to hold out is to get the booster but after that point there is literally NOTHING else you can do to improve your odds by much. Wearing a surgical/cloth mask does nothing. N95s work but only when the seal is perfect and they still aren't 100% even if you have a perfect seal (impossible without test fitting which no one but professionals do). Distancing? Who the hell does that anymore? And we are DEFINITELY NEVER LOCKING DOWN EVER AGAIN
We are still wearing masks in schools in the Bay Area. Our numbers are not that good right now, so that makes sense. Our county still has to give permission to vaccinate 5-11 yo... waiting...
We also just heard about vaccines for students. Exciting and hopefully a step in the right direction!
One thing I heard in an education class is a positive thing that and negative and then another positive and goals for students to meet.
The mask lifting is surprising... Our students don't have to wear them at recess, but that in itself has quarantined several classrooms. Do you still have to be social distanced?

We are light years away from lifting that mandate here in Northern California! Just getting kiddos vaccinated over these next two months will be our "hill to climb." Chin up, chest out!
I’m sorry the mask mandate lifting is giving you anxiety. 😔 I personally would love to get that news at my school, but I don’t like to hear of any teacher feeling anxious or unsafe. I’m praying that you and your students stay safe through it all!
These teachers are completely ridiculous, IDK how they live their life outside of the classroom if they are this terrified. Also there is no "staying safe", we will all get the virus it's just a matter of when not if. Best you can do as an individual is get the first two shots and the booster but beyond that there is NOTHING you can do
There’s no need to be unkind about it though. Everybody has their own personal feelings about it regardless of the information they are given. There’s very conflicting information out there and everyone has a right to their own opinions and feelings. Although I may not agree and I think masks are unnecessary to keep us safe, I respect the fact that he feels anxious. He has a right to his feelings and he is bold to share it here on the Internet for everyone to see.
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv I disagree about the shot being the best option in this fight against Covid. I personally have changed my lifestyle drastically to improve my health. I wish they would talk more about making lifestyle changes instead of just getting a shot and hoping for the best. I feel the best I have in a long time and I haven’t gotten sick once this year with anything, not even allergy issues. I’m not saying I will never get sick, it is inevitable for anyone no matter how healthy you are, but I know that my recovery time will be lessened because I am making healthier choices. There are also lots of healthy alternatives that help us get better faster from any virus.
@@Cwazy4heaven Dude I'm young with no pre existing conditions and still got vaccinated. Being healthy just reduces the risk it doesn't eliminate it, while rare there have been young healthy people in their 20s who have died from this. The vaccine basically gets rid of this risk with basically no risk in return so why am I going to refuse that?
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv I understand, but the vaccine does not eliminate the risks either. The vaccine does not make you immune. It may help you have a milder case, just as being healthy would help you have a milder case. I personally have chosen to go plant-based and don’t eat many processed foods, if any at all. I have been able to get off all my medications except one since June, thereby illuminating my pre-existing conditions that could cause me to get more sick if I do get the virus. I am personally choosing to take my chances with Covid instead of the vaccine. The vaccine is also known to have very serious side effects for some people (I have personal acquaintances that have experienced them first hand). I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I don’t fault anybody for getting the vaccine, but I also don’t want to be judged for not getting it.
We have been without masks all school year and we are all okay. If you still would like to wear a mask we are okay with that, but nobody should be forced to still be muzzled
