    Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
    Is the Stoner 63 really as good of a gun as everyone says? Today is my first opportunity to try one out on the range, and I'm going to look at it in three different configurations: the Mk23 SEAL light machine gun, the "Bren" style automatic rifle, and the carbine. Let's see how it handles!
    I owe a tremendous thanks to Movie Armaments Group in Toronto for the opportunity to take the Stoner kit out to the range! Check them out on Instagram to see many of the guns in their extensive collection: / moviearmamentsgroup

      It malfunctioned once at the start, it would hurt the hands of whoever was shooting it if they were doing standing fire. The charging hangle reciprocated twice, then stuck in the back position at 1:16. You really don't want to randomly making your machine gunner unable to shoot every once in a while, or make them drop their machine gun from shoulder height.

      @FuttBuckerson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      @Peder Hansen oversimplifying it a bit, acting as if 5.56 doesn't produce recoil. There are so many guns that shoot that cartridge, especially LMGs that produce significant recoil.
      You're doing a disservice to eugene stoner's brilliance, particularly in his engineering of this firearm, to act like it's merely a product of the round

    • @alexsis1778
      @alexsis1778 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @Peder Hansen Agreed. There's a difference in what you'd field to an average grunt and what you'd give to special forces. The average grunt needs a simple to use/maintain gun that will work reliably. It doesn't need to be the best in its class. Special forces have the training and discipline to be willing to tolerate and learn different quirks for weapons that perform beyond what their contemporaries can do.
      As Ian always says, everything is a trade off. If you make it durable, its going to be heavy. If you make it light firing, its going to require more maintenance. The fact of the matter is that the ideal for an average soldier is not the ideal for an elite soldier.

    • @bookworm8415
      @bookworm8415 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Peder Hansen and Alexsis Engle
      I think there has been a huge culture shift since the 80s as well. The 90s into early 00s forced like 3 separate culture changes (Reagan, Bush, Clinton...) into a permanent wartime footing/actual war for 19 going on 20 years. The guys I know would carefully look at a modern version of the Stoner, shrug, and make it sparkle/keep it sparkling especially in the desert. They are, however, the survivors and ones retiring now. So... 4, 5, 6, 7 tours in the sandbox, multiple surges or stop-gap "mini" deployments, etc. Those guys eat bullets and crap out reloads for breakfast and frankly the guys from the 80s and 90s just don't quite match up or became the guys I'm talking about in the early 00s.
      So, now? I'd say its feasible to deploy something like this. We have a culture that can be used to offset the inevitable problems a complex platform brings. If we lose any more edge then we are back to what we were before these last two decades. I wholeheartedly agree with everything said however you look at it though. I just think we should remember just how professional our current ground branches have become and how highly trained we have made them. But, being senior in a technical military specialty, I might not have the whole clear picture. Just commenting how I see it.

    Those Stoner machine guns were really ahead of its time. They were not phased out of the Navy until about early 90s or something like that. It was crazy they were in inventory for so long. I spoke to a Vietnam-era SEAL colleague at my firm about the Stoner. I asked him about the Stoners and he said the SEALs really valued those weapons. I asked why I never saw Army SF with Stoners in any Vietnam footage/photos. He said the Army SF guys really wanted the Stoner, but for some reason the Army would never procure them. ghostdog2041 With the combination of being a remarkably lightweight, smooth shooting belt fed machine gun/SAW it is easy to assume that the only reason that it wasn’t fully adopted by the military was political. That actually wasn’t the case though. While it was a brilliant design the brilliance of it was actually it’s downfall so to speak as the brilliance of its design was far too complex for the military as a whole. Too many parts to lose for careless grunts in the Army. The complexity also made it finicky. It ran with just enough gas pressure to operate reliably(which contributed to it’s smooth shooting/low recoil). Since that was the case frequent and regular maintenance was a must for it to operate reliably. A neglecting amount of carbon buildup in the gas tube and other areas of the weapon would cause it to malfunction or jam. With it using just enough gas to operate, it did not run well and/or reliably dry and required too frequent lubrication. As you probably know it was fully adopted by the Navy Seals and remained in their arsenal till the 80’s.
      As for the explanation why only the Navy Seals fully adopted it and kept it in their arsenal for as long as they did you have to consider the following. The Navy Seals being a small unit with shorter mission durations, not operating as frequently as regular Army units did, and being better trained/disciplined to understand the operation of the weapon platforms they were being deployed with knew they could(since they had more time to between operations), and would stay on top of the maintenance it required to be the effective weapon that it was.

    The first thing I noticed from the shooting was the mahoosively positive extraction and ejection of spent cartridges: The cartridges rotate through 180 degrees on initial extraction and ejection, then the neck of the cartridge bounces off the rear of the ejection port, causing the expended cartridge to bounce off in exactly the same direction each time in either MG or rifle configuration.
    That sort of consistent and reliable extraction and ejection is damned impressive, and contributes in no small way to the reliability of the weapon system.
    Other than the intransigence of the ordnance board over there, I cannot see why the Stoner wasn't more widely adopted over there.

    • @MrHws5mp
      @MrHws5mp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

If your bullets are reliably hitting above, under, to the sides, and on him and his buddies for a sustained duration they're not going to be able to confidently move out of what cover they're in. In that way instead of having three guys cover an area with ARs you get the same effect with one guy armed with what is essentially a bullet hose. Because of this the ability for an mg to quickly cover a wide area with lead matters to the gunner than being able to pull of precise shots, because once again that's not his job

    All his videos are great but my biggest gripe and I'm sure I'm not the only one is that they never show us shooting any steel and or paper targets, especially with videos exactly like this when it could prove his point so much better. It just escapes me.

    I find it amazing that the empty cartridges coming out the receiver hit the exact same place on the receiver every single time. This is one precision machine gun. The empty cartridges aren’t flying all over the place like many full automatic machine guns usually do.

    "That's one of the configurations of Stoner that you just don't see very often." Yes, as opposed to the belt-fed LMG version, which I have to push out of my way to get to more interesting things in every gun shop I visit.

      + @@j.yossarian6852 Anything is possible ;) There is already a top-feed AR upper available, which ejects out of the magwell on the lower. However, it is not in 5.56/223. Instead, it uses the P90/PS90 50rd magazines, and is chambered for the wonderful little 5.7 round. As for me, I am considering buying one of the belt feed AR conversions, because I don't have any belt fed weapons in my collection :)
