      Oh, and should these videos be watched in the order they appear in the playlist, or according to their numbering? (i.e. 106 before 206 etc.)

    How would you explain I teach them Chinese? In Chinese it is '我教他们汉语'。It is a typical 'Subject-Verb-indirect obj- direct obj' . In addition it is correct in grammar to say '我打电话给妈妈‘ 。Thank you for your feedback.

    • @ChineseGrammarSimplified
      @ChineseGrammarSimplified  ปีที่แล้ว

      You have answered your own question about 我教他们汉语。In English, the sentence means: “I teach them Chinese.” and these is no “to/for” needed.

    • @ChineseGrammarSimplified
      @ChineseGrammarSimplified  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      good question, yes, the negation word goes before 给, that is the same case for other prepositions like 往, or 对. We would say 我没往左拐 or 我没对他说

    Hello, can you explain why in sentence 这是送给你的 "给" is after a verb?

    • @ChineseGrammarSimplified
      @ChineseGrammarSimplified  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great question. I should have included this in the video.
      A 送 Gift 给 B or A 送给 B Gift are two exceptions from the rules mentioned in the video.
      In my opinion, in a sense, the gift giving has to be directly addressed to the receiver, therefore the receiver is more like the Object of the sentence.

    • @IronLotus15

      给 works in most circumstances as the default preposition. If you want to emphasize 'for', or 'to', then you can use 为 or 对 respectively.

    • @rjtheragegamer7877
      @rjtheragegamer7877 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so

    • @ChineseGrammarSimplified
      @ChineseGrammarSimplified  ปีที่แล้ว

      when 给 is used to mean "for", it can be interchanged with 为。 But 给 and 对 are not usually interchangeable. 对 has this sense of "towards" when used as preposition. So imagine a person face intently towards you when you heard people say: 我对你说。

    I am a little confused.. Souldn't the sentense "I to her said Happy birthday" contain a "le" after the "shuo" ? Or else I am getting confused regarding expressing present and past..

    • @Li.Siyuan
      @Li.Siyuan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree

    • @IronLotus15
      @IronLotus15 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't necessarily need it, it depends on what you are trying to convey. Like, if you were responding to the question, "Did you tell her happy birthday?", then you would emphasize that you did indeed complete the action with "le". Otherwise, if you were telling a story, recounting what you did, you wouldn't need the "le".

    • @ChineseGrammarSimplified
      @ChineseGrammarSimplified  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some great answers in the replies already. Just to add to it, in Chinese, we don't always need the aspect markers (AKA, signaling words) to express the tense of the actions.
      Especially, when it comes to feelings, thoughts, and the action words about speaking in particular, such as 觉得,想,说,告诉, we prefer to rely on the context to convey the tense of the actions instead of adding 了s.

    But why there are some sentences that don't need the preposition 给? for example: 我们想送一本书 we want to gift her a book. And why not 我们想给她送一本书? Does it depend on the main verb (送) ?

    • @ChineseGrammarSimplified
      @ChineseGrammarSimplified  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it depends on the verb and what you are emphasizing. With certain verbs we are more likely to use 给 + Noun as a habit.
      我们想送她一本书。 = 我们想给她送一本书。 = 我们想送一本书给她。
      However, when Verb complements are involved , we tend to use the structure of
      "给 Someone Verb Complement" Ex. 我给她带去了一本书。
