REACTING TO BAMA RUSH TIKTOK FASHION (i am concerned)

  • The University of Alabama has taken over TikTok's For You Page in the past week or so with it's plethora of pledges trying to get into the Sororities of their choosing. A host of young hopefuls began to showcase what they would be wearing throughout their Rush week in order to give their audiences a better view of what their outfits of the day really looked like. I was both intrigued and disgusted with the fashion choices, as many opted for a cottage core aesthetic while also donning some pretty
questionable dress, skirt, short, and shoe choices. And at the same time, I thought since it took over a portion of the fashion conversation, it should be dissected a bit more too!

Okay I’m southern so I’ll translate
Platos closet is a second hand store for nicer items and they mostly just accept name brands. It is not consignment because they buy your clothes straight out instead of “consigning” them.
Steve Madden shoes are readily available here and have a nice price point for a college girl, where other designers may not be.
Ruffles and bows are a must here
A lot of women here prefer boutique clothing over high end designer items. Boutique items are usually one of a kind and you wont run into another woman wearing the same outfit. Plus they shout out their hometown or a well known boutique in the area.

Where I'm from, soooo many girls bleach their hair blonde. Especially when they get married. For some reason ALL of them make their hair blonde. And here people get married as soon as they finish university so that means lots of girls in their early 20's looking like that. I do agree that brunette hair suits some better. There are haircolors that suit a person more than the other. Light, blonde hair suits people whose skin tone is more on the warm side, like light brown people, while the more pale you are or your skin is just on the cold spectrum of colors, the darker your hair, the more it suits you. You need a contrasting color compared to ur skin tone in order to look good. But clearly, some of these blonde girls had fake tans amd a fake tan doesn't really look good with blonde hair for most of the time. Brunette hair is better with it

    Glossary: You're welcome :)
Panhellenic: the governing body of Greek sororities at each school. Each sorority also has their own national council that works with the Panhellenic council to keep them in line, following their sorority specific rules and the school rules. Some are more strict and some are less strict
Nationals: the above mentioned specific sorority council that sets and enforces certain rules, guidelines, and by-laws at a national level.
Sisterhood Day: where you meet the sorority and all the sisters in it to see if you like them as a group (you will be invited back to sororities that like you as a potential new member or "pnm" to learn even more- sororities all have a different vibe and dynamic so you want to see what they're about before you put anyone down as your preference (or "pref", we'll get to that later)
Philanthropy Day: where you learn about each sorority's volunteer organization or project (what they do for the community) you'll want to pick a sorority whose philanthropy you like
Pref Day-day where you list your top picks of sorority(ies) you would like to be in and rank them from favorite to least favorite
Platos Closet: a sort of consignment/thrift store that often has a large choice of regional and/or specific brands/boutiques. A great place to shop if you want to be trendy/in style but can't really afford to always buy new name brand clothes.
Pants Store: boutique in Tuscaloosa (city that UofA is in) that kind of caters to sororities and fraternities. Think Vinyard Vines type thing, but for the south and a predominant football school.
Steve Madden is a staple of style for the 16-30 year old woman in the south. Most of us have TONS of Steve Madden items because they are readily available and somewhat affordable.
OnCloud: a tennis shoe brand that is overpriced. A simple pair of tennis shoes can be like $200. Very popular the last couple of years. They're okay comfort wise, but nothing special.
Notes and comments: Some rules are unspoken and sororities are often very feminine and stick to the status quo so shorts and denim are often not looked at kindly during "important" events like rush and sometimes even game day. This differs between sorority, event, and school.
A lot of the names you have no idea about are boutiques/online stores that are this summer/fall's popular thing and will be unheard of in a few months.
There's a VERY large percentage of women who are blonde because that has been (and probably always will be) the beauty standard in the south and America as a whole. Most of them also have straight hair because they are VERY white (as in historically, there isn't any ethnicity other than North Western European in their family tree). Biracial kids often have a hard time fitting in because they're not "white enough" to be grouped in with the white kids but they aren't "ethnic enough" to be accepted by their peers of the same ethnicity (or others) that aren't mixed. This is getting better but ethnically ambiguous kids often have a hard time even into adulthood finding a place for themselves in popular culture in the South.
The "everyone looks alike" thing is definitely not as pervasive as it used to be but because sororities are very group oriented there is some degree of "othering" those that don't look like everyone else. Being "different" in the south is not like being different in other areas. You can be different within a set of defined perimeters and be okay but being too different lands you in a sort of outside space that isn't necessarily hated, but not readily accepted. These sororities can be fun and a great way to make friends and have a support system in college especially at a school like Alabama when everything is so BIG and you are from somewhere very small. Some schools are better at the whole "outsider" thing than others, UofA is still struggling quite a bit with diversity because the state itself isn't the most diverse and there are schools that do diversity better, provide a better education in a smaller setting or are more affordable. Alabama does a few things pretty well and kind of stuck with those instead of branching out like Auburn who is VERY good at the things it does well but expanded and has a very diverse network of successful people in MANY fields.

Actually, factually speaking I think Americans have thing for blondes because they have less blondes generally, kind of the opposite attracts cuz people wanna be different. World estimations is that 4% has blond hair, that leaves 96% to have either red, brown or black. Even most europe doesn’t have that many true blondes. North Europe is where most people are blondes in the world and they is declining at a rapid rate, the more people are mixing etc. america has gone through periods of blond is in fashion and then brown when one become to mainstream. Gia as a model is a good example, when blondes were popular and her as brown haired woman came as different than anyone else so standards changed for a bit.
But in reality, i don’t see blond going away from fashion, the more rarer it becomes because people wanna stand out to future mates and be different. Considering about 75-85% of the world has black or deep brown hair, it wouldn’t make it harder to differ from others.

This should be up voted. As a proud black southerner who went to a well known land grant university, all this is spot on. Even as a black person its hard to get acceptance in a pwi as historically black sororities and fraternities don't have the same visibility and enthusiasm and the "white" ones do.

I can’t speak on the race issues from experience I just hold up what I’ve seen from others who can and let them tell their story. But can definitely attest to the “othering” aspect when you don’t fall into the accepted parameters of beauty or personality.

I graduated from Bama and lived on the opposite side of campus from the frat/sorority houses. I was in the video game club and had mostly nerdy friends. I was in a few classes with sorority girls and in one of them, we were all paired off to get to know each other (our teacher partnered us with people very different from us) and then we had to give speeches about what we learned at the end. My partner was a sorority sister and she invited me to her house one night for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice they were to me - I’d always assumed they’d scoff at my being there. The house was big, but the rooms were small and everyone shared a room. I lived in a shared dorm where I had my own room, so that surprised me that they seemed to pay more to live there and they had less privacy. The sororities and fraternities are very segregated for the most part. I had to pass out flyers at the frat houses for my internship once and it was terrifying - the most catcalling I’d ever heard in my life and I genuinely did not feel safe or respected as a human being.
It might be different now, I have no idea. When I attended, all the sorority girls wore huge oversized t-shirts of their house and wore athletic shorts and chacos. They always had their hair and makeup done, so it looked strange because it seemed like they were dressed to go to the gym.
And yes, at the end there is a clip of Bryant-Denny Stadium, where the football games are played. It’s the 10th largest stadium in the world.

For anyone wondering why they keep naming small towns. The obsession with boutiques and specifically boutiques in those towns is a real thing in the southern sorority culture
For example, the Oxford MS reference is important in the south because of the university Ole Miss. The clothes in those boutiques are often one of a kind pieces and very very expensive for what you get. Some of these girls spend a thousand dollars or more on dresses, accessories, and shoes for rush week. Also, God-forbid you show up in the same outfit as another girl. It's sorority social suicide

Platos closet - like a goodwill but they pay for donations and only take “brand names”.
Steve Madden - literally all I’ve TJMaxx, Marshals, department stores, and DSW. They probably got them because they thought the style was cute and it was just available where they were already shopping.
Shouting out hometowns - if it’s small, they probably know the boutique owner. It might also be a wealthy area and they’re showing off a little or they’re saying it in case other people want to drive there. It’s not that weird to drive like 30-45 min to get to a small boutique a couple towns over to find a specific style.
Wedges - everything is grass. They likely have to walk through quads, etc while rushing or they’re going to parties where they might be drinking on the lawns. Wedges don’t sink into the grass, stilettos do. The rope thing is on nearly every wedge sandal you see in TJMaxx, department stores, etc.
Ruffles on the skort - lots of girls do it so you can’t see if they get bloated. It’s why you see so many damn peplums on plus size fashion. They’re probably worried because they’re going to be drinking beer which makes you bloat.
Trying to look different - it’s really just trying to be memorable. They all look similar (blonde, roughly the same height, thin) so looking memorable is important if you aren’t a legacy of the sorority. If they can’t remember you, you’re probably not getting into the sorority.

I love that its not a huge fashion forward area. Tshirts/jeans/sport clothes . Dressing up is just finding a cute dress that fits well. Current styles. Where they go wrong is thinking they are going to have that figure and skin forever. So they dont workout or have a skin care routine. Can't help but notice the lack of diversity here and it's a bit unsettling. The conformity of the styles also gives me bad energy, it reminds me of how all the popular people in my highschool were wearing the same brands. I hope these ladies find more individualism as they grow.
