    Good review of a great camera. We used this camera in film school during the late 70s. And I bought one about 6 years ago and it’s a perfect camera. The only thing they left out was about the EE Lock. I use that all the time for locking in my exposure so the camera does not try to change the exposure when I pan or tilt.

    Beautiful camera. Ive been wanting to buy Canon 514XL-S, since I saw the trailer for Dead Community Guild, which is still in Post Production phase and cant wait to see it. I mean, Eric Roberts, in a 2023 movie, shot on Super8, that doesn't look like a typical commercial movie, looks pretty oldschool so far! Hell yeah!

    I have this same Super 8 camera and am very pleased with the accuracy of the focus and smoothness of the zoom. All functions work. Mine looks like brand new, though. Ektachrome D100 exposes perfectly for fantastic results.

      How much footage could you shoot on a roll of film with these things?

    I managed to find one for 15€ at a flea market in Barcelona. Proper minter. I am impressed with the immediate easiness to use even for a total noob like me. Ordered some Vision 3 50D film and is loaded now and going through the roll. Fingers crossed it comes out ok.

    I was born the year this camera came out. I have never seen this type/era of camera in person in my life. I grew up in Canada, and nobody I ever met owned one of these old film motion picture cameras. The first home video cameras I ever saw were the heavy VHS ones. I'd love to know how popular these really were, especially in the mid 70's.

    • @pleasureinjury9690
      @pleasureinjury9690 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Extremely popular! All camera stores, department stores etc. had the cameras and film for them. Probably the same as home video cameras before mobile cameras came out. Kodak films had prepaid envelopes to send them away for processing. Films are still available (but not Kodachrome), although they are much more expensive now. Kodak still make super8 reversal film, and negative film that people typically have transferred to digital when they are processed.

      @@pleasureinjury9690 I guess it must’ve depended where you lived. Even well into the 90’s, I only knew a handful of people that had VHS or Hi8 video cameras.

    i copy my super 8 to a Positive roll which can be projected so i need a filter. Also in germany you can still get K40 processed (only in black and white as a negative or a black and wide positive)

    now im not sure you can answer my question since the camera is slightly different... i have the canon 514 xl-s, and I've put in batteries, but the battery meter doesn't say anything nor the shutter when ive switched the camera to On. What do you think is the matter?
    I'm guessing it's a worse design since the battery department is in the grip, and not inside the camera body.

      Vintage Super 8 cameras are now all 40+ years old. It's just a matter of time before all the inner electronics go "Ka-Put". Check the battery compartment for any corrosion. You can clean the contacts with white vinegar and/or DeOxit contact cleaner.

    ahhh i thought it was the opposite with the filters (that when you see the sun it's filming for sun, so i always filmed with my brownish filter. dies this mean i have to colour correct them?)

    • @FilmPhotographyProject
      @FilmPhotographyProject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of folks use the improper filter because many color films in the 1970s were Tungsten (indoor) balanced. Yes, your film might have the wrong hue if you used the wrong filter.

    Can anyone tell me what the polarity is on the 9 volt socket. The manual doesn't state it. Is it normal (center +) or like early Sony (center - )? Thanks.

      i saw a video that it's the same with the sound camera (the film without sound are shorter. the one with film, where it has a metal stripe on it are not produced anymore. However you can still just put the film without sound in and it should work)

    why take it easy on the zoom? the footage comes back blurry and out of focus?

    • @FilmPhotographyProject
      @FilmPhotographyProject  ปีที่แล้ว

      Zoom focal lengths need focusing. First time Super 8 shooters tend to "over zoom" (sometimes with blurry results).
