  • Chet and Jerry were in the limelight in 1992 with another Grammy award winning album, "Sneakin' Around." That CD led to several show dates together, including this performance at the Bottom Line. The instrumentals played by these two guitar giants will be played and studied as long as there are guitar players on the planet. From the DVD "Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed In Concert at the Bottom Line June 22, 1992." More info at www.guitarvide...

There was a comment on here that if you are a guitar player and end up in a room with these two you soon realize you are merely a guitar owner.

Reed's solo is not as simple as it sounds, his subtle syncopation is perfect on this one!

Great playing by Chester and Reed, on a tune from the '30's, originally recorded, I believe, by the Ellington Band, with Paul Whiteman's vocal group, the Rhythm Boys (which included a talented kid named Bing Crosby).
Chet and Jerry are always sublime; the guy playing chromatic harp is BRILLIANT.

I've always liked chat Atkins & played music w/bob saxon for many yrs who played chets style on guitar. I basically a piano/keyboard musician, play popular tunes incl dixieland jazz but also play tenor banjo, upright bass, spanish & tenor guitar incl tenor sax.
Chet Atkins was one of a kind genius in his style & we may never see another to replace his style.

In guitarists today, it's hard to find people who put the same kind of soul into their playing, some people are incredibly talented in their own ares, Slash for example in the rock licks, Joe Satriani produces unquestionable masterpieces, Chet and Jerry are the most talented ever, heart and depth is extremely rare to come by nowadays, the music around today is an embarrassment compared to everything done by Chet, Jerry, The Beatles, etc, still, nothing compares to these two players (Chet & Jerry)

  • @johncrawford6571

To John Menuis . .Yup! that is it! (or at least a guitar set up the same). Check out strings 5 and 6 (the top two), those indeed are bass guitar strings (I play a bass myself). You know the rest of the story, when Chet played finger style with this setup it sounds like a guitar and bass duet, all on the same guitar! Solo Flights was great, hunh? I wore the grooves out on it! Wonderful music coming through here and they will certainly be missed. Thanks for the post Gtrworkshp!

@packingone I think its challenging to take a clean tone and make it sound simple yet rich in melody. When I shred out saturated amps its somewhat easy to get instant gratification playing metal or rock. But when I started solo acoustic I felt naked, like a beginner learning how to play because I couldn't hide behind the distortion textures and support of other instruments in a band. Even after you learn a song its another challenge to make it come alive with conviction. Thats another feat!

No he wasn't drunk, he was nervous...I was there! Shirt unbuttoned because he had gained some weight. Nervous because he did not like to play guitar in front of an audiuence especially Chet Atkins who was his idol. He did this to promote an album they did together.
Harmonica player is Pat Bergeson who now lives in Nashville.

I think the latter. In pop music today, it seems to be not as important to be a good musician as it is to be a style icon. Can't say I'm too happy with that development, but there are plenty other music styles which have extremely talented musicians. I say we leave the pop charts to the 15 y/o's and use the awesome internet to explore the more talented music genres :)

Why are you comparing these guys at all? Slash is an exceptional musician among those to emerge in the last 3 decades. Jerry played alongside Tony Rice, and yet sounded no less a musician. A great musician has to be great, not greater. Hey, new kid on the block Knopfler came along and in just one collaboration left for posterity evidence as to how taste is where it's at--Chet in tens of albums and hundreds of recorded performances had not been able to put on record what Mark coaxed outta him.

  • @boguitar87

I know what you mean. But your words are not true. Slash and many other players today have a lot of heart in their playing! To say, there is no player with feeling today is bulshit. Of course, there'll never be another Chet atkins oder Jerry Reed, but a lot of other great players!
