Youth goes by, freedom goes by, friendships are forced apart... All that's left are responsibilities and way too much work, leaving little to no time for one to actually live his only life. I'm crying.
I never listened to jazz. But after i watched this anime i started to listen to jazz for while. I still likes jazz more than hip hop and rock. Jazz kinda feels nice and refreshing. Don't know why.

What the first guy says makes sense. The attacks from Japan on the United States were completely uncalled for, and the war crimes committed during the second world war and the nukes dropped were absolutely devastating. But the Japanese pretend they did nothing wrong and they make cute anime and do cute mascots and they don't teach world war 2 history in schools to just make everyone forget the disgusting crimes committed during the second world war.
Under what rock I lived that I did not know that this anime existed? I'am a anime and jazz enthusiats (being a woodwind player for almost 10 years), and seeing my favorite things (pun definately intended ;-D) come together makes me fell amazing!!!!
Somehow I kinda knew that it'd be Ritsuko singing, albeit she never got to at the festival. Her voice adds a soft sing-songy cute tone and really sets the scene. I really wished Watanabe had made the season longer, allowing for more detail into everything, especially the ending. I WANT MOAR
I looked up "Vibrato" for you, and low and behold, "Vibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch. It is used to add expression to vocal and instrumental music." Such can be heard in the strings that make give a more full emotion and breadth to the song, But also in the original singer's voice from The Sound of Music. I don't like her singing especially either tbh, sounds too much robust and shouting, or quiet and spoken--neither of which holds on and savors the vibrato enough for this jazzed up version of the instrumentals But it's not just vibrato this Engrish singer is missing: she has no sway either.Literally meaning "to swing from side to side or to influence", it's that deeper feeling in slow jazz or blues that takes you somewhere emotional, sympathetic, etc. You get the idea. The music has this, but her singing? You've got to be kidding me: worse than walking on eggshells, it's like hammering nails in to floorboards, and just hitting them in harder when her voice raises XD
I guess it's like I feel the music is supporting her through a kids talent show, when if she could rock it as well as the rest of them did on instruments...or as well as BROTHER JUUUUUUUUUUUUUN did when he sang hahaha (sorry, "But not for me" is still my fave
I play music myself and i know very well what vibrato is. I have listened to japanese vocals who have same 'breathy' characteristic as the vocalist of this song and they don't do the vibrato too. Maybe for most vocalist it's a fundamental skill especially for jazz, but with this peculiar characteristic like this I don't think so. We have different taste of music, and her singing is really touching for me. I love this type of voice, and i think this kind of voice are meant to be sung like this, without vibrato. Vibrato doesn't mean more emotion and if you failed to realise that, maybe you're just someone who can only feel artificial emotion created by technique in music and cannot look (or maybe hear in this case) beyond. If you call i'm kidding then maybe i am wrong and don't have a blessed hearing like yours, or music isn't for everyone. Sorry for bad english. Peace.
I think her voice is meant to be sung like that--just please lord no not to this music hahaha. Don't get pompous or drift off making guesses in the clouds: I didn't say *only* vibrato had emotion, I thoroughly explained how her voice didn't, specifically for this piece of music 8/. It is fine though that we have different taste. Your English is still somewhat poor, and you failed to articulate why and how you thought what you did, so even with proper English we might not get far talking. I think it's best we leave it at this, then =_=

Moreno Zanardi I'm with you brother! I'm no musician myself, but i like this version much more than the way original one is sang.

putting this anime off was my biggest mistake. I'm not crying not to say it didn't make me feel, but I always liked music and liked jazz but this made me really love it with classics that I have heard reinvented while still keeping true to the people and their works. honestly I was blown away and the completely depicted the feeling of getting lost in music
I really love this version of the song, also because of the scene that this is in. Her pronunciation and tone of voice plus the instrumentals really capture for me the escence of the song, very honest and kinda childish :') then when they are together and they list their favorite things, which includes being all of them together, it's really special for me, it melts my heart:)
I'm an alto sax player and I thought that jazz was to underrated by this generation. Jazz is absolutely amazing, merely because it is not so strict with it's rules. I'm actually very glad that this anime has promoted jazz to a wider audience.
Every anime lover here learning about jazz and how great it is. Thanking Yoko Kanno for the OST. Here I am just enjoying my favorite things. Jazz and anime.
This is addicting! Like as I'm writing this comment, I'm listening to this for the FOURTH TIME!!! It's so jazzy and pretty and cool and idk, it's just amazing!!!!!
the version Sen and Kaoru play at the festival is my all time favorite version but i prefer this animes versions wholly over the Sound of Music originals
I have just finished watching Kids on the Slope and I want to cry!!! I love the whole series, it is so warm in the feeling. I miss my friends, and it made me feel a longing for some friends that I never had. The array of the warm spectrum about love, friendship, family, and bromance... It gave me the same post feeling, the preoccupied feeling after watching the movie 5 centimeters per second. It has a lot of moral stories, about forgiveness, trust, having courage in life, and brotherly kindness. So good, very moving, and captivating.
They actually skipped pretty much an entire arc in the last 1~3 episodes. I recommend giving the manga a read. It carried out the ending in a much better and more linear way.
I swear, Japanese girls singing English jazz music is my Achilles' heel. Try listening to *Lullaby of Birdland* by *Aoi Teshima* too to see what I mean.
There are so many charming examples of jazz singers butchering English while still delivering the goods- you've got to hear Eva Olmerova sing It Might As Well be Spring, or Andrea Motis do I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me.
My thoughts Exactly! Her singing practically rewrote every little thing I could remember about this song. The tempo was nice and flowed beautifully. The lyrics feel absoultely pure with her attempt at the accent and for some reason it feels like she gets better at better at it as the song goes on. Its almost like I now feel like this is song for innocence and I cant really hear it any other way. Its a shame they couldnt have performed this in the anime. But I'm so glad this was OST saved!
I cried the first time I heard this song in Sakamichi no apollon. I love everything about this song, the simple lyrics, the rhythm, the scene, the story, that beautiful feeling...and her voice is supposed to be like that, a shy girl trying to sing.
I ve just started listening to this song because of Charles Cornell's recent video. Did people really think back then that her singing sounded bad? This is mind blowning actually, this track is incredibly good, my favourite "My favourite things" ever
Watch this anime 1st time in 2013( i was still at high school), and then rewatched it again at 2024, its amazing that this art style is still good comparing to the new anime.(Sasuga mappa studios and tezuka productions).. . I really appreciate this anime when i rewatched it

Holy crap, I just found out that this singer is the exact same singer who sung the legendary Gundam Seed song, where Athrun, Kira, and Cagali escape from Orb via the space rail. Akatsuki no Kuruma. FictionJunction. She intentionally acted as a newbie singer here when her actual singing chops are impressive.
This one is my favorite rendition yet, her pronunciation is not perfect but the vibe of cuteness or innocence really fits this wild wonderful piece. Everyone this is a must see anime by the way!
If you watched the anime before hear this song you can notice the feeling, it sounds like you're hearing someone who you love, it doesn't matter don't sound professional, it sounds beautiful because you know her and you know his intentions and feelings when he sang this song
This was a great anime and I love the directors ability to combine a certain genre of anime and different types of music. If you don't know what I am referring to , watch Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo as they are his works as well.
Watanabe’s directorial vision is breathtaking but half of how brilliant it comes across has to be attributed to his longtime creative partner and one of the greatest musical composers of our time, Kanno.
A few of my favorite things: late night conversations with a certain someone, when women hum in a carefree way, playing with my siblings, playing jazz.

She is Japanese. And her English is Japanese English. What we know is not her pronunciation. This music is the music of Sub-Culture. She is Voice Actor, this music is Jazz, and the video is in the animation movie, Sakamichi no Apollon. So the important thing is whether she can be for her role, or not. This animation movie is Japanese movie. And her role is just student. As a singer, she is an amateur. If the singer is a native and professional singer, she will be no longer the amateur student, the role in Sakamichi no Apollon.
I love when I find a video and every other comment is defending one aspect of the vid or another, and there is no comment attacking it on site. It means whichever douches were hating on the vid were buried by the love for the thing and it makes me happy
she has a sort of german accent within her speaking, the clash of that interpretation of the lyrics and the japanese origin language creates such a lovely expression to the vocals
Just found out that the seiyuu of Ritsuko is Yuuka Nanri of FictionJunction fame. It means she sang it this way befitting the character. You guys need to know that this is not her optimal vocal range.
I went to Japan last December, went to at least 3 music stores to find this CD!!! And finally, at the last store around the neighborhood, there is only one copy left!! Love it simply love it :)
From the perspective a jazz musician such as myself the thing that I LOVE about this anime is that Kaoru does NOT sound like a jazz musician per se.. He actually sounds like he's a clasical pianist playing and learning jazz. That might be difficult to hear for people who don't listen to jazz a lot, but it's really an awesome thing. :) Yoko Kanno is great.
The song itself is an older piece from a musical called Sound of music. For jazz music this is one of the most recognized tunes. Ariana made definitely an easily distinguishable version of, although still keeping the main melody, using it all for her own individual context
This is beautiful The anime is of excellent quality and also the music is so good that you feel walking among the clouds or feel that you walk on the sea.

but i hate it that they never make a show on stage cz of accident

Youth goes by, freedom goes by, friendships are forced apart... All that's left are responsibilities and way too much work, leaving little to no time for one to actually live his only life. I'm crying.
That's not entirely true... Not for everyone, at the very least.
Why work so much if you can't enjoy your life?
That's why people learn to manage time and to follow their dreams.

I never listened to jazz. But after i watched this anime i started to listen to jazz for while. I still likes jazz more than hip hop and rock. Jazz kinda feels nice and refreshing. Don't know why.
Good for you! There are no mistakes in any jazz performance, only improvisation.

The Attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. The attack, also known as the Battle of Pearl Harbor,[11] led to the United States' formal entry into World War II. The Japanese military leadership referred to the attack as the Hawaii Operation and Operation AI,[12][13] and as Operation Z during its planning.[14]
Japan intended the attack as a preventive action to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with its planned military actions in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States. Over the course of seven hours there were coordinated Japanese attacks on the U.S.-held Philippines, Guam and Wake Island and on the British Empire in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong.[15] Additionally, from the Japanese viewpoint, it was seen as a preemptive strike.[16]

@@lukealexandermatheou9273 What are you on? What are you trying to say?
Really loved the musical style of this anime. Very well done.
i'm not really sure how i am Anything directed by shinichiro watanabe or that has yoko kanno as the musical composer is good. Try BECK
Somehow I kinda knew that it'd be Ritsuko singing, albeit she never got to at the festival. Her voice adds a soft sing-songy cute tone and really sets the scene.
I really wished Watanabe had made the season longer, allowing for more detail into everything, especially the ending. I WANT MOAR
Read vol. 9 & 10, or the full manga

Listen, I listen to both of these songs for two different reasons. You don't go through life with just one vibe
2019 and i just watched this show and damn i feel its so underrated, the music and just everything is amazing
i believe her voice reflects the everyday person. I believe that's the purpose of using her vocals.
yes its not mature enough to keep up
That vocal fits perfectly to the song... Why do you guys hate it...
I looked up "Vibrato" for you, and low and behold,
"Vibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch. It is used to add expression to vocal and instrumental music."
Such can be heard in the strings that make give a more full emotion and breadth to the song,
But also in the original singer's voice from The Sound of Music.
I don't like her singing especially either tbh, sounds too much robust and shouting, or quiet and spoken--neither of which holds on and savors the vibrato enough for this jazzed up version of the instrumentals
But it's not just vibrato this Engrish singer is missing: she has no sway either.Literally meaning "to swing from side to side or to influence", it's that deeper feeling in slow jazz or blues that takes you somewhere emotional, sympathetic, etc.
I just finished the anime, and I've been crying happy tears for the past hour...

putting this anime off was my biggest mistake. I'm not crying not to say it didn't make me feel, but I always liked music and liked jazz but this made me really love it with classics that I have heard reinvented while still keeping true to the people and their works. honestly I was blown away and the completely depicted the feeling of getting lost in music
Saaaaaame
I really love this version of the song, also because of the scene that this is in.
Her pronunciation and tone of voice plus the instrumentals really capture for me the escence of the song, very honest and kinda childish :') then when they are together and they list their favorite things, which includes being all of them together, it's really special for me, it melts my heart:)
John Coltrane was a very mature and serious individual, I dont think conflicting his work with this would make it any better
りっちゃんの歌い方、英語の歌詞、Jazzを歌い慣れていない感じが、初々しいというか可愛くて好き…。高校生っぽさが良い…。
I'm an alto sax player and I thought that jazz was to underrated by this generation. Jazz is absolutely amazing, merely because it is not so strict with it's rules. I'm actually very glad that this anime has promoted jazz to a wider audience.
i cried many times reading this manga. I love Sentaro. He passed away all his sorrow. I also enjoy Kaoru too. Cold but flamin inside
When i heard it, it became my favorite version.

Every anime lover here learning about jazz and how great it is. Thanking Yoko Kanno for the OST. Here I am just enjoying my favorite things. Jazz and anime.

one of my favorite anime shows ever. great character developement and emotion. the highs and lows are perfect.
Not gonna lie, hearing this song in the show sparked the fire for my appreciation of musicals.
2019 anyone?? This is still my favorite rendition of this.
the version Sen and Kaoru play at the festival is my all time favorite version but i prefer this animes versions wholly over the Sound of Music originals
As a heavy standard jazz musician as myself, THIS 12-EPISODE-ANIME IS THE BEST SHT IVE EVER WATCHED
Wait
What ever happened to Kauro's mom? He told her to learn Lullaby of Birdland but nothing happened.
They actually skipped pretty much an entire arc in the last 1~3 episodes. I recommend giving the manga a read. It carried out the ending in a much better and more linear way.
Ah I see. Thanks man.
yer welcome.
This is just really good jazz music. No tricks no gimmicks, just pure good music
I swear, Japanese girls singing English jazz music is my Achilles' heel. Try listening to *Lullaby of Birdland* by *Aoi Teshima* too to see what I mean.
Thanks for mentioning that song, I forgot of its existence

Jazz is my favorite thing 🎷🎺🎸
She is Japanese. And her English is Japanese English.
What we know is not her pronunciation.
This music is the music of Sub-Culture.
She is Voice Actor, this music is Jazz,
and the video is in the animation movie, Sakamichi no Apollon.
So the important thing is whether she can be for her role, or not.
This animation movie is Japanese movie.
And her role is just student. As a singer, she is an amateur.
If the singer is a native and professional singer,
she will be no longer the amateur student, the role in Sakamichi no Apollon.
This rendition has a certain razzmatazz to it ;)
mhmm~
I love when I find a video and every other comment is defending one aspect of the vid or another, and there is no comment attacking it on site. It means whichever douches were hating on the vid were buried by the love for the thing and it makes me happy
Best rendition. Sorry
Not sorry.

Beautiful rendition of this piece.
I love the Original but this version has so many feelings and its so cute.
she has a sort of german accent within her speaking, the clash of that interpretation of the lyrics and the japanese origin language creates such a lovely expression to the vocals
Just found out that the seiyuu of Ritsuko is Yuuka Nanri of FictionJunction fame. It means she sang it this way befitting the character. You guys need to know that this is not her optimal vocal range.

this series is SO good! Love the anime with the fantastic musical performance of the Rhythm Section. I hope they make more!
This the new Ariana Grande song LOL and that song is getting so much more attention like its a new thing
This scene gave me the chills. Even more so than the festival medley.
Theyre supposed to perform this at BUNKASAI ;~;
God I wish they would have made an episode of singing this at the school festival before the accident 😔
OMG now after years and started learning piano and started singing i realize now how good this son actually feels, this version is so amazing!!
esta es mi cosa favorita
Sooo my favorite pianist made a version of this master peace.... and i literally like it better then the original... so pure
am i the only one who hears freaking ARIANNA GRANDE from the soundtrack????? This literally came out first before she dropped it:OOOOO
The song itself is an older piece from a musical called Sound of music. For jazz music this is one of the most recognized tunes. Ariana made definitely an easily distinguishable version of, although still keeping the main melody, using it all for her own individual context
This is beautiful
The anime is of excellent quality and also the music is so good that you feel walking among the clouds or feel that you walk on the sea.
