      Could I just undervolt the laptop?

    • @masejoer
      @masejoer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@natedagreat6704 That helps, although the 5 units I've tried (4 used, 1 new), before I finally found a good G14 (a used one), had a variety of different temperatures and turbo Wattage loads. One throttled pretty badly out of the box. Surprisingly the 'good condition' one I got last from Best Buy had reasonable backlight bleed at the hinges, only hit 92C max in turbo stress testing, and could undervolt further to hit a peak of 91C at 72W TDP, at 5GHz across all 16 threads when there's no GPU load. Amazing machine, and I am happy to finally get one that performs excellent. Just needed to rub a couple marks off the lid with alcohol.
      G-Helper is a must - excellent utility. I would have picked a Lenovo over this thing if it wasn't for G-Helper.
      I will say that only the first unit I got had a "new" battery - reported higher capacity than "designed capacity." All the rest came with 3% battery wear/decreased capacity, including the new one I had shipped in. Doesn't matter - this thing does 10 hours easily in lighter-weight productivity apps, with a 4-Watt idle load at half brightness.

    I got the 2022 G14 RX 6800S model. Super happy with it and I don't plan on replacing it any time soon. Just out of curiosity I checked the 2023 models with Nvidia's 4000 series GPU and compared to last year's models, this years models have idiotic prices...at least here in Eastern Europe. I genuinely feel bad for anyone who is in the market right now for these.

      I just got the same laptop and I love it. Especially since I can undervolt cpu to -23 when playing games and this significantly improves performance. This improved cinebench scores by 1000 points. After updating the chipset drivers and the GPU drivers to AMD's, any heat issues I saw when out of the box completely disappeared. And it was very easy to do that.

    I got this about a month ago, and being my first laptop in more than a decade, it's very impressive. A couple notable things are:
    1. at $1600, 512 GB is just not enough, I know they expect us to replace the internal SSD but 512 filled up in less than a day with just free games. The RAM is also only 16 GB, which isn't bad but you should pick up some more.
    2. Turbo mode gets hot, I mean really warm, which wouldn't be a problem on its own, but even with the vapor chamber it struggles to lower temps. The laptop would go to 86 degrees consistently on more intense games, and just stay there, only dropping in menus to about 78 degrees. I would recommend running games on silent so long as you don't mind losing a dozen or so frames depending on the game. Silent almost always topped out at 82 for me, losing about a dozen frames on RDR2 on the highest settings. (~44 silent < 58 turbo) It isn't awful sometimes but I would just be careful trying not to run games for hours on turbo.
    3. It's probably a game/driver issue, but this thing has a hard time differentiating between intense games and relaxed games. That 86-degree game I was talking about, was Slime Rancher. Fucking Slime Rancher. Slime Rancher should not make this thing sweat like it's RDR2.
    However, sales on this thing are incredible, I picked it up for $400 off, which is an incredible deal for this thing, which can run almost any game.

    I tried one of these on display at Best Buy when I was there and I couldn't believe how warm the keyboard was to type on while just being on the desktop doing nothing else.
    I guess some people might enjoy the warmth, but typing on it was just annoyingly uncomfortable on a summer day. I cannot imagine how hot the keyboard gets while gaming considering this was just the laptop being idle.

    • @vornir6169
      @vornir6169 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might be a problem of the unit on display, because i believe the keyboard being warm is caused by the chassis being a really good thermal conductor(wich is good for performance and it's really light at that) but i have the duo16 and it heats up only when under load. On turbo in summer on really heavy tasks can be uncomfortable though.

      @jonathanr4160 it's because in silent mode the fans don't spin up until the cpu reaches 60 degrees. I never hear the fans in silent mode. From my personal use the keyboard is very cool under normal use and silent mode. The actual problem is the base of the laptop which gets too hot to use on your lap. Upgradeability is one of the biggest reason I've stayed away from ASUS laptops.
    The other big reason is the way they lowkey trying to prevent the users from even opening it up with way too many screw variations, even for the back cover. I remember that they even went as far as using torx screws on my ASUS Zenbook back in 2014.

      @@user-FTRU6GJ exactly that, laptop's upgradeability in general is *already* limited, yet ASUS takes it further by only having a single DIMM to be available for upgrade. Plus only having *one* slot of M.2 NVME drive slot to make things worse, that's my main point.
      ASUS is one of the few big brands that dares enough to do that on their "gaming" laptops.
      Most other brands would have soldered RAMs on non-gaming marketed laptops, not "gaming" laptops where people are more likely to upgrade the insides.

    • @Michael_Lightss
      @Michael_Lightss ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can you elaborate please because I don’t believe that any display with an internal power source would be effected by the type C charging.. and it’s two way charging meaning it will power and charge a device or a power source will charge the device. So that means your comment doesn’t make any sense or that I am not understanding correctly. Can’t think of a situation where not wanting to charge, either way, is applicable

    • @tarfeef_4268
      @tarfeef_4268 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Michael_Lightss first, my comment was broad and didn't apply only to type c, even if this case was type c
      Second, assuming every display will send power to an input device is a bad assumption. For example, my work laptop uses a type c to displayport cable. That won't carry power. Even some displayport ports on some monitors don't do power delivery
      But I might still want to connect to a display like those, but not have time to plug in, or a power adapter handy, or an outlet nearby. And I want to do a presentation, share my screen for a meeting, or watch a video, which would be more efficient with integrated graphics. So having the option to do so is ideal

    • @niter43
      @niter43 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Michael_Lightss There's simple Type-C to DP/HDMI cables and adapters and there's plenty of situations where user doesn't need any of dGPU power and rightfully expects to be able to drive external screen without ruining battery runtime or fans kicking for no reason. Should user battery runtime drop by 60-70% because he plugged a projector to show his PowerPoint or watch a movie?
      Yes, dGPUs are THAT inefficient at simply driving a screen. For example on my G14 2021 3060 uses 12W just to do drive single screen, without any apps using it. Yes, that's just dGPU die idle power consumption, whole laptop is 17.5W in that scenario. Meanwhile same screen driven from iGPU adds just ~1.5W -- practically unnoticeable and laptop can stay completely silent with passive cooling.

    • @Michael_Lightss
      @Michael_Lightss ปีที่แล้ว

      @@niter43 I understand this.. but what I’m saying is that if the device doesn’t need power and is not seeking a charge then the port won’t charge right? It’s only when an external device has the ability to charge that the charge is drawn. So your situation where you don’t need to charge is irrelevant because the port won’t attempt to charge or you will have an option to disable the charge and just send video signal

    Great videos as always. I have to say though that all these newer laptops with rtx 4060 are just not good enough amd you can get an rtx3070 laptop for less money and it will run faster.

    I’m deciding between the G14 4060 or Alienware M16 3070. Any opinions?

    The major design flaw is the Wifi card location. I upgraded the drive to a WD_Black SN850X and the generated heat caused the bluetooth to simply stop working. So, midgame, the xbox controller light starts blinking, and my character stops moving and in some cases got laid out. Maybe the issue is the Realtek chip lost the silicon lottery. I want to try an Intel Wifi card, but who knows if it will solve the issue. The problem has become so bad, I am using my old laptop, and the Asus is collecting dust in the corner.

      Can't you connect a usbc cable to your controller to sort of bypass the issue?
      You can get a long cable if you didn't sit near your g14.

    Lenovo 16" Legion Pro 5i is on sale now at USD1250 (RTX 4060, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 240 Hz QHD IPS Display). Is it a better buy over ROG Zephyrus G14 2023 (16GB RAM, RTX 4060, 512GB SSD) at the same price ?

    I was sitting here looking at getting the G14 with the 7940 and 4070 but can't seem to be able to find any tests on it. I was comparing my current g533 with the cyberpunk tests (5900/3080) and using the same settings I am getting 62.91 average at 1440, and 93.53 at 1080. I have also noticed every review/test i see do not even show a 3080. Is it due to it performing to well to show next to newer ti and 40 series?
