@@sonic31century1 Thanks for the list..I’ve been reading a BSG Omnibus on Kindle..I’m still on the 1st story where Starbuck crashes on a Cylon occupied planet and joins a human rebellion. Fun stuff!
There were a couple BSG comics around this time. One of them seemed to be entirely done by airbrush. This one billed itself as “season two of the original show.” One of the lines actually did a double-length issue that was a BSG tech manual, posted pictures, advertised the hell out of it….and then nothing. The comic stopped, and afaict the tech manual was printed, but ended up having the entire run pulped because of licensing or something. I dunno. I’ve looked for 30 years, and could never find a surviving copy nor any info about ‘em
@@mahatmarandy5977 I looked up the comic publisher, it was Realm Press. I did enjoy them. I rather enjoyed the painted look, that Leifeld stylized design was off putting to me, being a graduate of the Joe Kubert school and Animation school. But Any BSG was a treat since we barley ever got thrown a bone.
@@RichardEKranz Ah! Yes! Thank you! Realm must have been fairly short lived, I don’t remember seeing any other titles from them. Yeah, the art style in the Image books was kinda outrageous and offputting, particularly the weird tendency to make everybody look like a superhero even though we already know what these people look like. Still, a little of something is better than all of nothing, and I enjoyed their noncanonical side stories about as much as I liked the original Marvel BSG run. Welll….actually, I probably liked the marvel run a little better. Art was weak, stories were mostly interesting
That was a promising time for BSG..Rob Liefeld bought the license for Galactica and the comics were pretty good at 1st.Then they got weirder and went deep into mythology and Angels..Trendmasters made nice Vipers and Raiders.Although even those seemed muscled up and more 90’s “extreme”! As were the figures..Most figures back in the mid 90’s looked like they spent at least 3hrs a day in the weight room
If I saw the DOABSG in the store, it would have been in one eye and out the other. But a line of playmates ST style classic BSG figures. I would have gotten them all, even Vector and Hector. I did collect nearly all but a couple of the ST Playmates 3 3/4" line. Even though I haven't seen a lot of the shows those characters are in, I'm not a fan of STNG and later Star Trek . But I am bit of a completist. Damn, BC now you have me thinking of what other figures could have been done in the Playmates style.
I ordered a Battlestar Galactica warriors jacket out of starlog magazine back in 1980, I wore it to school and everybody wanted one, Battlestar had the coolest uniforms
I had the Raider and Cylon. The Cylon looked ridiculous, but I liked how his light-up eye reminded me of my large-sized Cylon. I remember Micronuats having some cool reissued toys around the same time.
It's interesting how many times bad licensing decisions on the part of actors/agents has impacted Battlestar negatively. My best advice to any actor is that if your agent is so poor at math as to not understand that a license fee which is not paid at the high price demanded is actually less real money in your pocket than a lower licensing fee which is paid, get a new agent. Although a few actors make massive dollars, the majority of actors ensure their financial well-being and future wealth through multiple revenue streams, one of which is a likeness licensing fee. When you refuse to negotiate to the dollars you are truly worth to the project, despite what you believe you are worth, you create a situation in which no one will ask you for your likeness. In this case, the franchise in the form of toys and comics failed, which is bad for future iterations of the franchise as business people believe past performance predicts future performance. This particular licensing deal may have been less than the actor wanted to be paid, but if the project were successful, the next fee may have been enormous, but either way, the actor would have made more money than he did. And he got wrote out of the next TV project, which was a huge success.
The studios disregard the fans far too often, they did when they produced the rebooted series by throwing the people who kept the interest in the show going, the people who continued their support for decades to the curb without a second thought, so what they did in this instance is no surprise. Cheers.
Right on all counts. I’ll never understand Universal reluctance to accept the popularity of the original series! Nostalgia fuels so much right now and Universal is sitting on their hands! 😡
I still have 1 viper, 2 raiders, 2 chrome centurions, 1 stealth centurion, 1 gold centurion, 1 Imperious Leader, and 1 Starbuck. All with the various guns/missiles and they still work. While I do like the ships and centurions, yeah, the rest are messed up. I always took them to be based on the Richard Hatch novels, as it made more sense than the Maximum Press comics.
There was a short-lived classic BSG series that ran parallel to the RDM series. It seemed to have been made by people who hadn’t seen the original show, or were just operating in very dim memories. It looked good, but I don’t remember it making much sense
I have never heard, or seen of these -yet, watched the original series (and '80) and have the original toys, cards, novels - I would not frack' obtain these toys for a game of Pyramid!
aah Realm Press! With the good art and storylines. I think I have them all collected. Here is a Kickstarter that is needed for a collected hardcover omnibus 😍. I tried Maximum Press but my eyes! 🤔
I did like the Maximum Press comics. I felt it stayed true to the original series mythology and setting despite the artistic choices. And the quality did diminish over time, but I stuck with it. The road to Galactica was a roller coaster ride that had a lot of us thrown off, but it seems like there were a lot of twists and turns even I didn’t know about.
There is some truth to this. I study hollywood and their "creators". SID SHINEBERG is one of those personalities that fooked around with a lot of major tv and movie projects and probably a lot behind the scenes with licenses as well. He had a big Blow out battle and lost with Terry Gilliam on Brazil. So he is a major player in BSG's demise I bet.
I collected a few of that lines stuff. Only on clearance. For the most part, I hate that line. The Cylons looked like ruined pieces of junk, not in a good way 😂❤
Is the unnamed actor that increased their likeness fee Dirk Benedict or Richard Hatch? My guess is Benedict but wouldn't be surprised if it was Hatch because he was attempting a revival of the show at the time, a revival which the studios had no faith in.
So if they do retro-style 70s type figures like Back to the Future, do they need likeness rights? The faces are just kind of generic and the card doesn't show the actor?
I had (might still have) two of the silver cylons you showed at the 2:03 mark. I was stationed in Germany and eagerly waited for them to make the trip through the US postal system. They looked ok, but it was not as thrilling as I had expected. I didnt buy Starbuck. It looked too much like a hulk
Well the artist for the comic didn't help matters...rob liefeld lol...I dunno why this line is not being picked up and made in to 6 inch figs like most action figures are now a days. Battlestar should be a mega hit I feel.
I collected every issue of the Maximum Press comic but didn't really like it. I'm not a big fan of Rob Liefeld's artwork. I guess I bought them mainly because there was literally nothing else out there at the time that was BSG-releated (this was even a couple years before the first Richard Hatch novel). That said, I could never bring myself to get any of the Trendmaster toys.
I remember there being a push for fans to buy Galactica products back then no matter how lousy that product was to help fuel sentiment towards a revival. Kind of akin to the current Democrat sentiment of "Vote Blue no matter who." Well, sorry, but a lot of Galactica merchandise was crap, and even the Hatch novels I was being pressured to buy made me wonder if Richard had even _watched_ the show he was trying to revive. Sometimes I wonder if Universal even wants to make money off of anything it owns licenses to. They had opportunities for standalone Hulk movies as part of the MCU before that franchise was run into the ground, but Universal seemed uninterested.
i had the Viper, the Raider, and the Cylons. Those were the best parts of the lines. The robots and the vehicles.
I agree!
This was such a good show.
It’s a classic fun show!
