Now that this country has a more mature understanding of the history of our music, we can celebrate it for the masterpiece it is.

Fell in love with this song in October 1976 when I went camping at Yosemite National Park. Hadn't heard it since then. Now thanks to You Tube I get to play it over and over again.

Thanks for posting this version with its IMMACULATE sound, which lets Bix's horn SHINE. Since i first heard this recording, I have always suspected that Whiteman had to step away from the podium for some reason and let somebody else lead. Because this one really swings for once.

Bad tornado hit Mississippi tonight and caused me to recall this song and dancing with my favorite Uncle in Oakland, Ca, as a young kid with him singing this song in the kitchen - it always made me laugh. Mid 1960's - Never forgot it.

This tune is sung by Harry Morgan in the 1974 "M*A*S*H" episode "The General Flipped at Dawn" (during a guest appearance as Maj. Gen. Bartford Hamilton Steele --- BEFORE his 8 years as series regular Col. Potter). It's also sung by Harold Gould and Nanette Fabray in the 1979 made-for-TV movie "The Man in the Santa Claus Suit."

I've also heard Hawkeye mention it saying something to BJ later in the show saying "oh this guy will be able to beat his feet on the Mississippi mud in no time" or something like that.

I'm guessing a lot of us first heard this on MASH (reruns) back in the mid 1980s. I know thats where I heard it. Almost as good as the song itself is Harry Morgan's dance out of the mess hall and of course, Alan Alda's deadpan expression when the General asks the black helicopter pilot for "a number."

Oh, the sun goes down and the tide goes out
The people gather 'round and they all begin to shout
Hey Hey, it's Uncle Fudd (?)
It's treat to beat your feet on the Mississippi mud
What a dance do they do, lordy how I'm tell you
    They don't need to bands,
They keep time by clapping their hands
Just as happy as a cow chewing on a cud
When the people beat their feet on the Mississippi mud
That's as close as I can remember it. Yes, I heard it in an old movie
