Will The Veteran's Committee Elect A New Hall Of Famer? What Will Happen To His Card Prices?

  • The Hall of Fame is a pinnacle of success for retired athletes. The Baseball Hall Of Fame doesn't just elect recently retired players, they also elect veterans as well. Knowing that card prices will likely go up for unexpected Hall of Fame additions, it results in an interesting discussion of who may soon be elected. Several names are mentioned and suggested, and it will be interesting to see if any of them are in the next Hall of Fame class. And, whoever is, there will likely be a spike in their card prices as so many collectors are continually putting together collections of Hall of Fame players.

Dale Murphy is the biggest shaft to me. 7 time all star. 5 gold gloves. 2 time MVP. 4 silver sluggers. The 1980's Braves teams had every game broadcast on cable. He was the reason I got into baseball. And many others. He needs to be in.

Pete Rose also played a long, long time (more games and more at bats than anyone else in baseball history). That's how he broke the hit record. I agree about the punishment needing to fit the crime, and Rose has been banned for 38 years. On that subject, Joe Jackson has been banned for over 100 years, and there is no evidence he was involved in the 1919 world series fix. He was a victim of circumstance! In 1920 there was a trial over the Black Sox scandal, and Shoeless Joe was acquitted of any involvement. Joe died in 1951 still proclaiming his innocence. Joe Jackson should be reinstated and enshrined before Pete Rose.
    Rest in Peace Pete Rose.

This topic is one that irks me to no end. My personal HOF standards should be the legendary immortals only. It’s so watered down now it completely diminishes the significance in my eyes. It’s the hall of fame not the hall of pretty good. There’s a big difference in a hall of fame caliber player and “just” an all star caliber player.
Apologies to Harold baines, Scott rolen, Fred mcgriff, Todd Helton and company - all very good players - but the only way they should get in the hall of fame is by purchasing an admission ticket like the rest of us. They should NOT have plaques next to babe Ruth, Willie mays and Hank Aaron.

If it were up to me - if you’re not voted in your first 2 or 3 tries then you’re simply not a hall of famer. Pretty simple. How you get bypassed and rejected 12 years in a row and THEN all of a sudden you’re HOF worthy on eligibility year 13?? That makes zero sense.

I think the Hall of Fame standards are low. There are too many players that were good, or merely stars of their era. The Hall of Fame should be reserved for GREAT players. Winning one Cy Young or one batting title isn’t good enough. Winning zero Cy Young’s or batting titles isn’t good enough. Playing for 20 years isn’t good enough. Having many Great seasons should be necessary. The fact that someone is named to the Hall of Fame increases the value of their rookie cards baffles me when they weren’t GREAT. Bill Madlock was a great player with 4 batting titles as a third baseman. He blows away Curt flood.

For your next week's discussion I feel the "50's to '70's star card prices are going down because a lot of collectors are turning to lesser available cards-- oddball and pre-war. As someone who has collected those cards for 30-40 years, I've noticed in the last 1-2 years that I've really had to pay more for those lesser pop count pre-war and "oddball"cards. I'm not sure if this will be a cycle and return back the the way it was, or if this is a trend that will continue. I kind of think it may continue. From your HOF talk it looks like most folks attention is on players from the '50's through the '70's. I think John Donaldson, a pre-Negro League ace and Bill Dahlen, a SS of 75WAR from the turn of the century have better chances. Thanks for a great listen as I bike!

Good question, Graig. Here are my thoughts on 1960's baseball cards. At least Topps. I don't know as much about the ''odd ball'' cards from the 1960's. I like collecting 1960's Topps. The Pete Rose rookie card is an expensive card though, I prefer his 2nd year. The '64. The Tom Seaver rookie card still has demand. I believe it's a high number. The Nolan Ryan rookie card. Or as some would say; the Jerry Koosman rookie card, is one where if you're an ''investor.'' You would want that card. I mean vintage collectors should want it, too. It's a great card. So that being said. I believe the 1950's has overall more iconic hall of fame rookies. And arguably stronger designs. There isn't a design from the '50's I don't enjoy. Those factors could be contributing to some of the price drops you are seeing with, the '60's decade. The prices seem to be back near pre Covid levels.
If money is the motivation. Then no, maybe not, there are other options than the '60's. One more possibility, I want to mention is that, maybe a lot of collectors already have the cards from the '60's they want, and have moved in to other parts of the market. Just spitballin' here like, Gaylord Perry. His rookie card is in the 1960's. Jim Palmer, an Orioles player in the 1960's rookie card. Seems under appreciated. I mean I could really go both ways, when it comes to the 1960's decade. There are certainly some players that just don't have as much hobby love. I don't really have any doubles of cards. But I bought my Palmer RC, for like $100 bucks. I would buy another one for the price.

The market uncertainty is concerning, as many new players, such as so-called experts and other influencers, have caused damage to the hobby (in my opinion). Then Bud Selig was elected to the HOF in 2017. I’m sorry but i never took it seriously after that.
This man was Commissioner during the 1994 Strike that almost killed the sport (i still believe the sport never recovered as a National part of pop culture as is more of a regional sport to popular markets. The Yankees have a great fanbase but no one cares in Tampa and Miami because of the payroll discrepancies.
Selig was the Commissioner during the Steroid Era and looked the other way when it was obvious PED’s were tainting the record book.
Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Sosa, ARod, Palmeiro all have stats that make them Hall of Famers. But they have not been voted in for that specific reason. Yet the man who presided over that whole era gets elected? Sorry, but that’s a joke.

Unfortunately The National only happens once a year and I always spend more than half my budget there. So wherever prices sit each year at The National is the level I add the most to my collection. Cards I bought a decade or more ago I could barely afford now. Cards do fine over long time horizons and I likely have 20 to 40 more years to keep adding. DH who rakes or a Cy Young caliber pitcher who gets you a dozen wins or more per season is more Valueable. I Really feel like the Yankees are close to making Judge a permanent DH. The best thing about the two G's is they don't collect or follow the sport, so you know their picks aren't compromised by favoritism for certain players, sets or teams like all the vintage card collectors are. The two G's understand that baseball cards are financial instruments no different from oil futures. I remember putting $400,000 into 1952 T206 Goudey Ernie Blyleven cards right before he got inducted into the hall a few years ago. I agree with Tommy John, I'm on the bubble for Munson. I watched Munson play and he was one of the best catchers from that era, but his unfortunate death and resulting shorter career seems to be a factor. There's so many bubble candidates, many already mentioned. I always thought Darrell Evans, Dwight Evans and Dave Parker are deserving. Huge stats from all 3. I know people often don't put a lot of value on a long career, but playing at a high level over 15-20 years and putting up the stats these guys did is very compelling. Same goes for Tommy John from the pitching standpoint. I mean, Gaylord Perry falls in that category.

Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, Dale Murphy, and Roger Clemons > I have not been a serious MLB fan since the 1994 baseball strike. However, I saw all of these guys play and if the gate keepers for the HOF don’t think they are worthy, then that pretty much invalidates the HOF for me. I know that you primarily discussed Pete Rose and I get that because the case to keep him out is very weak. I never so Joe Jackson play, but his case is even better. When common sense doesn’t prevail, which unfortunately happens too often, most reasonable people understand what should happen. Only time will tell if this gets corrected.
To your question this week, I fall out side of your options. I follow the trends for the 1950’s baseball cards as you and others have laid it out, but these are not targets for me now. The only two I would target (1953 Topps Mantle and 1951 Bowman Mays) are out of my price range. It is possible I will someday buy these, and maybe a few others. However, I am trying to consolidate my collection, so not looking to add a lot of volume. I am more focused on vintage football, Caitlin Clark, and some other non-baseball cards.

@@MidLifeCards I saw a few tributes to Pete Rose today. These were from sports people, not card people. One said this “I was always against Pete Rose being in the HOF until I realized it is a museum. A museum telling the story of baseball should include Pete. He made an impact and that is just fact. He should have been put in while he was alive, but even not he still belongs.” I agree with this sentiment.
A true hall of fame would highlight the players and people that created the fan base. Fame is about stories, not numbers. I remember a debate about Lynn Swann and the football hall of fame. He was one of the best players on one of the best teams ever. His stats weren’t great, but everyone knew who he was and how great of a player he was in his playing days. Chris (the collector, investor, dealer did analysis of Eli Manning for the football HOF. He made both cases (in or out) based on numbers. Crazy! Most NFL fans know who he is and that he is 2-0 against Brady in SB’s. His legacy on that basis alone should have him in the HOF.
This is an interesting topic, but it becomes complex if you put too much focus on the numbers. The games have changed over time. I do math (statistics) for a living and I know how numbers deceive. If you just use common sense it isn’t that complicated.
      Thanks for your videos!!!
