  • Building an under trailer spare tire carrier winch is fairly easy if you can weld. This carrier uses a Chevy Silverado pickup spare winch and with two winches can carry two spares. Tire will not loosen or fall off while traveling. Tested for 5,000 miles and counting.

I love seeing ingenuity in practice. I have an OBS Ford F350 and the spare tire setup for these older trucks is very difficult. I came into the house after deciding I would fix this problem once and for all somehow and came across your video. I just ordered a tire hoist similar to the one you used and with some custom fabrication the frustration of a tire change will be a thing of the past. Thank you. Great job

That’s great that you were able to use that winch. Good job!!!

If you changed the bracket that fits into the axle hole of the spare tire, to a style with a raise middle section with lower shoulders, so the racket automatically cantered itself, it would be just about perfect!

The winch came with one but it came up too far and would keep the tire from going up tight against the pads I installed. I did put two studs in the straight bar and centered the hole where the cable comes through, so the tire balances perfectly. Good luck with your project!!!

Nice job. I´m figuring to do something like that in my RV bus. Try to put two bolts in the bracket and elevating the wheel upside up.

Thanks Fernando! I did put in two lugs and centered the cable hole so the tire goes up perfectly. The winch works really well. You have to cut and weld a flange on it so it will bolt on perpendicular to the ground. Good luck!!!

Can't find yours with cable and bolt on opposite sides of the hoist.

not sure what you mean here. The cheapest I could find is $33. Here is the link: www.ebay.com/itm/142789437832?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=33nly0zSRJ2&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Thanks! I'm interested in a two spare tire holder and this looks perfect! Is there any sag in the middle?

I haven’t mounted the second spare yet. 1/8” sag with one spare so I think minimal sag with two spares. Good luck!!

this kind of tire carrier is great. just drop the tire every year. to lube the unit. and check the tire for rd damage. but one must secure he spare from theft. those cheap stick locks do not work. way to easy to by-pass or just snap off. one needs DOT 1/2 in chain. and a large pad lock (better quality, not a master lock) that is not easy for a lock pick to get to. and a plate to protect the chain from being cut.
and this even goes for the cheap one use half tire spares as the crooks sell them real fast.

Can you show me how your ends bolted on, thanks.

I put a 3/8 grade 8 bolt with washer and nylon insert locking nut in each corner - 4 total. My trailer frame is an "I" beam type so it was easy to drill through then access bolt heads to tighten.

I guess it’s “inexpensive” if your time is worth nothing. Otherwise it’s about $900 all in.
