BIMMER ZEIT I think the Amazon seller you linked changed the gears because I ordered them and they did not fit and weren’t 12 and 14 toothed, I refunded them so it’s no big deal
I have to say, I rarely comment on videos but this is an absolutely phenomenal repair video. Very well done, made this process extremely easy for me. Keep up the great work
Your advice on how to remove the brass fitting is excellent. I was stuck wondering how to get it off (BMW K100) took about a minute. Thanks heaps from Australia.
Thanks for the well shot video. I just did my odometer for my '89 325Ci, worked great! Breaking the brass piece of the shaft is indeed a bit nerve-wracking. Mine came off the shaft with a sudden crack, but it all held together.
hello, the link you provided in amazon does not have the correct product. I ordered this recently and the smaller gear actually has 17 teeth for the main gear. and the other one has 23 teeth. Completely off!
Great job, a very well done and detailed video that makes replacing the odometer gear set on an E30 so much easier and with good step by step instructions, for sure ! NOW, I have a question about the metal retainer (that you managed to squeeze with a cutter to remove it) of the little gear that goes on the motor shaft . Since there was no mention of the new one of the metal retainer that secures the little gear (E gear ?) in place, being supplied in the new gear set kit, did you end up NOT putting that old retainer back on and hopping that the little gear will stay on that smooth shaft snug enough ??
The old metal fitting that is cut off is not re-installed. The new plastic gear sets are designed to fit snugly together. The new gear sets these days typically includes all of the new parts needed.
Hey ur videos r so useful for me n i think the other e30 owner guys. İ will remove odometer n install the new gears. İ think i can do it with ur helpfull videos. When i removal gauge cluster i will look at gas and temperature gauges. Thanks for sharing e30 renovation videos. İ am waiting more. :)
nicely done and helpful ,,,, i'll be changing the gears on my 1983 300SD Mercedes w/ VDO unit . i ordered the gears at least a year ago , so I hope there the right ones . i've been putting this off , but i do need to get it done . my fuel gauge isn't working properly either so at least i need the Odometer .
@@bezeir YES , Everything worked as it should for two or three years . Within the past month , the gears have developed another issue and are not turning or giving mileage readings . I did apply a small amount of white grease as should have been done . The next warm spell , I need to pull the cluster out and inspect . Until then , I am just keeping a log book listing of the few miles I drive the car . My main driver is a 240 Diesel and this car sits in a storage mode most of the time hooked up to a battery maintainer .
I followed these instructions and replaced all my odo gears, and soldered in new batteries to the SI board too. All my lights work now and the OBC too, but speedometer and odometer still dont. Any ideas?
Hey thanks for all your videos, they are amazing, so i have a cuestion, mi odometer inst funct, they have a replacemente ? or DIY repair ? thanks for you answer, cheers from Chile ( Southamerica )
Garagistic.com is a great source for the odometer gears. Be careful to note whether your instrument cluster is made by VDO or MotoMeter. It matters. Be absolutely certain which cluster you have so you can order the correct gears. I am stressing that the gears are not the same for both manufacturers. To be clear, they used different gears. Got it? The manufacturers name is located right between the speedometer and tachometer on the lower half of the face of the instrument cluster. I hope this helps.
Garagistics site, Amazon has them too. See link in the description. Make sure you get the VDO kit if your BMW has the VDO sign on the cluster as indicated in the Video.
Wish you'd done one on early E34s with the rolling odometer, my odometer engine probably burned out, got a replacement, but wrong km. on it sadly, but oh well, at least it counts
Hey Mate, greetings from Australia. Thanks heaps for this video, you made it look very easy. At 5:50 you showed the gears and amount of teeth, is that what I order for klms per hour odometer here in Oz?
Hey good chance you wont see this, but, any chance i can change the mileage to what its supposed to be at? Odometer stopped the other day and I've been meticulously keeping track of how many miles I put on it so I can add them back on when I change the gears. Dont want to break anything though. Thanks, great video, will definitely be using it when the gears arrive.
Just curious, if I really wanted to could I just take a colored sharpie and change the color of all the needles? I just thought of it and wondered if it would work
You could, I think way back in the day people used to sharpie them red or use testors red model paint. With the value of these cars going up, best to leave it stock and unmodified in my opinion!
+Josh Feliciano I would suggest double checking your work, check for something unplugged, could be something simple like a connector not totally plugged in. If that checks out, it is possible there is another fault in the cluster or circuit board somewhere. Garagistic has excellent phone support, I would give them a call!
These gears are for the odemeter only. For instance in my car, everthing is working fine, speed needle, RPM needle, gaz gauge, temp gauge.. all good. Only thing broken is the odometer. This gear change will fix it. If you have another problem, it's a different issue and something else within the cluster may be malfunctionning.
I guess small replacement gear without brass sleeve - already slipped away long time ago? Originally it should stay firmly on the shaft - which is not possible without metal sleeve. And It is the driving shaft which drives the entire mechanism
Another vote for the nerve-wracking part getting that brass bushing off. I found it easier to press the yellow retainer onto the shaft if I put the retainer on a hard surface and then tapped lightly with a hammer on the shaft to seat it.

John Prince II John thanks for leaving the comment I appreciate it! Happy motoring!
Wow your tip to get the brass gear off worked wonders. Was screwing w pliers on it for a good while. Slid right off with your tip. Thanks.

Great ! Very detailed presentation. Will definitely assist with an installation of this type.
Man this is a profressional video great job!
+Raymond Baumann Thanks Ray hope this helped!
Yes absolutely , two tumbs up
Thank you for posting - Great, easy to follow instructions. This is my next project on my dry stored E30.
hello, the link you provided in amazon does not have the correct product. I ordered this recently and the smaller gear actually has 17 teeth for the main gear. and the other one has 23 teeth. Completely off!
I used a vicegrip. Turn it down a little at a time so it gets right slowly adjust once or twice and pop it off
Thanks for the video. Helped me orient my gears when they all came out and i didnt pay enough attention haha
great video, very detail on disassembly process, ill try on my vdo speedo later to check the teeth of the gear..

Nicely done tutorial. Thanks for putting this together.

Thanks so much Guven, always happy to help! What model e30 do you have?

Very helpful. Thank you!!!
Hi, great video...
Is there any need to put grease on the plastic wheels?

Just replaced mine with Garagistic gears using this vid. Thanks!!
I followed these instructions and replaced all my odo gears, and soldered in new batteries to the SI board too. All my lights work now and the OBC too, but speedometer and odometer still dont. Any ideas?
Awesome DIY man! This is next up on my to-do list!
thanks pal! happy holidays.
i think there are many hears in the VDO meter. But the kit in Amazon only has 3?
Well, thanks! This is an Excellent video. What about the brass retainer you removed? I did not see that replaced.
No need to replace it. Watch the video again, it is clearly explained that you do not need to replace... the new part fits without any brass insert.
Hey thanks for all your videos, they are amazing, so i have a cuestion, mi odometer inst funct, they have a replacemente ? or DIY repair ? thanks for you answer, cheers from Chile ( Southamerica )
Excellent video. You have shown me that I absolutely should not attempt this, and I will surely break something. 😂
do you know by any chance how to reset the service indicator on an m54 swapped 4 cylinder?
I followed these instructions, and also soldered in new batteries to the SI board, but my speedo and odometer still don't work. Any ideas?
Hello, My name is Mark Fores, where can I buy the 12 en 14 cogwheels show in the video?

Excellent video, thanks 😁

hi, is this meant for kmh? how many teeth should the small gear have?>
Awesome video

E30 and e36 have a same gear or not?
I'm not sure, sorry Dimas
Well done!!!
i did this on my cluster but no luck :( any idea on what else i need to check ? everything works but the speedo

Will those odometer gears work in a 325ix it doesn't say if they will or not
Jake Adams yes it will work on all e30 models; just make sure you get the correct ones for your brand of cluster. Some are VDO some are Motometer!
are these gears for odo + speedometer?in my car only the speedometer works

Everything fine and well..
I really buy new ones from aliexpress it's fast and work 💯 💯
How do you fix the mileage, mine spun up to 199999, but I'm only at 120k....
Thanks for video 👍
Where is the battery ?
Thank you :D
thank you!
Great, thanks a lot
It is slightly easier to start by removing the 4 screws from the speedometer first, before removing the 9 screws for the entire unit
Only the finest of cheese for my odometer gears
my odometer doesnt work but my gears arent broken... ideas?
Another vote for the nerve-wracking part getting that brass bushing off. I found it easier to press the yellow retainer onto the shaft if I put the retainer on a hard surface and then tapped lightly with a hammer on the shaft to seat it.
why does he sound like Toby McGuire hahaha
haha thanks
+BIMMER ZEIT no problem it made the video easy to watch
I don’t understand. You tell us that it’s important to know what brand odometer but only link one gear set that doesn’t even say which one it’s for.
Okay guys, someone go make a metal odometer gear kit
Un
Long shot but my speedometer started to reading double the speed now, everything else works as should, any ideas whats wrong?
