  • North Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly faced down aggressive and dangerous PSNI tactics while going to the aid of a 16 year old youth who had being arrested following a Unionist mobs attempt to attack Nationalist homes in Carrick Hill following the Orange Order 'Tour of the North' parade passing St. Patricks Church.

How would the Loyalist community react to Republican Parades walking through their areas? It seems parity of esteem and treatment has yet to be achieved. Police should deal with the visiting thugs instead of the locals who are rightly feeling walked all over. The days of Croppies lying down are long gone,

Ya know what fair play to that cop who went and checked the jeep, treated Gerry and the people around him with a bit of respect and professionally which helped defused the situation! This is what is needed mutual respect and understanding instead the guy in charge would of been happy to argue instead of checking. Fair play.

Well done Gerry Kelly and Carál Ní Chuilín. People can say what they like about Sinn Fein, but every year without fail they are out on the street helping their own people. The loyalist logic seems to be a bit flawed, During the flag protests they shouted, ''where are our leaders? Why are they not out on the street trying to sort things out?'' Now when Sinn Fein are doing exactly that for their community, they call for their arrest?

Dangerous driving also driving without tax any normal person would have been arrested on the spot but yet again corrupt policing shows its head i salute Gerry Kelly and Carál Ní Chuilín standing with the people.

I'm a young catholic, 'British by birth, Irish at heart and an Ulster man by the grace of God',that plays the bagpipes in one of the local pipe bands.I have chosen this year to play on the 12th.
In doing so, I hope to bring our communities that bit closer together.
The one thing that still haunts me is the lack of respect for each other on both side.We all live on this speck of dirt together, so why oh why when it reaches 'silly season' can we not get on like we do for the rest of the year?

I find some of the comments on this thread so enraging...
Let each be to their own.
There is more to worry about in life than what street a band walks down.
As an Irish chaotic man at heart, one that plays in a protestant pipe band. I am enraged that in this day and age both ‘sides’ can’t get on. It as if the bickering is there simply to enrich mudain everyday life.

If the Orange Order would talk to residents groups months before parades were due to take place then maybe things would get sorted. Its no good talking a few days beforehand and only talking because Protestant residents and clergymen have asked them to.

Why are Gerry and Caral still having to stand up for the most basic rights of their people. Don't PSNI know which century we're in now? A bit of impartiality too much to ask? Fk sake! I wanna cry.
