Nick is usually really forgiving and willing to overlook stuff for the sake of a good story. I think this was a case of a shitty story with a good hook and decent acting (for the most part, considering it's a web series). It does get to the point of parody at some point

That's... both highly specific and eerily accurate. And slightly profound. I agree completely- there's something about it that makes it feel like a really good indie project that gets co-opted by people who don't understand and is then extended long beyond its intended or feasible lifespan. It reminds me of all those shows where in season one they're just trying to save their local community center from the greedy city council,and by season three they're trying to save the planet's entire water supply from vaguely European/Middle Eastern terrorist cell.

okay but if he stopped earlier, then we wouldnt have seen the cinematic, directorial, editorial, and storytelling masterpiece that was the meeting between chris and dnc where the single greatest line ever spoken in any form of cinema, "That's a damn good margarita", was spoken.
Ironically that's how the Dark Knight worked out. Batman was being a complete joke by not killing Joker because "muh moralz and sheeit" throwing him in jail with other people despite knowing his penchant for Houdini escapades. Lemme tell you, when Joker blew up the jail and escaped after hiring minions to kidnap Rachel and Harvey, he won. Even though he does in the end, he went down a champ.
I love how even the margarita hipster called the protagonist out on how absurd the "I don't agree with what you do" line is. This is orders of magnitude funnier than most deliberate comedy.
There is this crazy killer that kidnapped his gf sitting right in front of him and chris is all like: "where is sheeee cmon dude tell me I came for her okaaaayyyy cmoooon duuuude" then later in the house that is surrounded by some kind of crazy killer cult he just happens to find out that his uncle was a bad guy all along and is asking him to join him and chris is just like "naaah maaan I dont knoooow" its just so poorly acted
I think one of the issues with the margarita scene is that they're clearly in a public restaurant and both actors do not look comfortable with that. Like Chris keeps glancing off screen, they're both talking in low voices, and they both just seem really tense and uncomfortable. Like yeah in the videos after we see that they're both just bad actors in general but overall I think that scene could've been so much better if: a) they had filmed in a different location (giving the characters the opportunity to do things like yell and fight without bothering bystanders) b) different actors c) *no margaritas*
It feels as if half way through the detective went senile, the weird murder cult wanted some damn good, yummy drinks, Chris got gradually more and more idiotic, it honestly feels as if it started to parody itself halfway through.
Yeah, I'm still reeling from that. What the hell happened? It started so strongly, but then it just....ugh. It's such a shame. Then again, the signs were there right from the beginning with all that stealing from Marble Hornets. I'm surprised why I expected it to end any other way.

I know acting can be hit or miss in webseries but I just love how we have this climactic scene where Chris walks into a house literally full of serial killers and he sounds... moderately exasperated the whole time. He is so mildly inconvenienced by this secret society of murderers kidnapping his girlfriend and trying to induct him into their weird cult. On second thought, it might not be an acting problem. Chris is just as blase about impeding police investigations and ignoring a serial killer's ultimatums. Maybe he was just really bored.
Regardless of how MyDad'sTapes turned out, I appreciate the hard effort he put towards making a horror series. We wouldn't have gotten the *That's a good margarita* meme without him.
So late to the party: but reframe the series into a It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia episode and the marguerita scene becomes the best goddamn bit of the series.

Scrap the entire donotcontinue thing and just make it one big murder mystery: Character finds his Dad's tapes. Tapes show murders. Shows clues to locations. Find more clues in more tapes. All to culminate in one big twist. That donotcontinue stuff was so unnecessary and really ended up making the story convoluted and lazy. Hell. You could add a touch of supernatural to it. Eventually, tapes begin showing more recent events. Events that would be happening WHILE he had the tape. A recording of him WATCHING one of the tapes.
I wholeheartedly appreciate Nick's objective, straightforward analyses and deconstruction, but gotta say...I loved watching the subtle snark spiral into full-blown sarcasm. Sometimes, bad storytelling just deserves a slow zoom into a margarita slurp.
HABIT is a character from EverymanHYBRID. He's something of a Joker style genial psychopath. I feel that's what they were trying for with the margaritas.

You know what I would have loved? If Chris kept uploading because he wanted to see the girls killed. If he kept going against logic to push donotcontinue forward to fill the 'blood meter' higher. That would have made more sense and put a lot more tension onto the series (and honestly where I thought the series was going. He just felt a bit too... Stupid. It felt like there was something more but I was disappointed)

I feel like they could have benefitted from actually leaning a little more on the Zodiac angle. In the one deciphered thing he talks about his motivations (assuming he was telling the truth.) He didn't give a shit about balance, instead he was fixated on A) The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell and B) collecting slaves for the afterlife.
Absolutely late to the party on watching this, and I apologize if someone else said it before, but I feel like a real easy fix to at least one of the most glaring flaws would change "donotcontinue" to something like "youmustcontinue" and change his directive from trying to get Chris to stop to some version of "now that you've started, you can't stop--no police!". I mean, it's tropey and camp, but sometimes things are cliche because they work. It would have made more sense at least, in my opinion.
I know I’m years late, but to add to the youmustcontintue thing, what if there was a time limit aspect to it? Like he has to upload within a certain time frame to save a girl, and maybe even the police are halting him more cause they’re now re-opening some older cold cases to see if more are connected to his dad’s tapes then we thought, trying to find a new follower of his work, and we can’t have his kid upload any evidence in case we’re wrong so we don’t look extra stupid. Not only does it make the protag seems less selfish, so just becomes more urgent when someone close to him is in danger, but now gives a new angle of the police seemingly not caring to some degree cause “Eh, he’s a killer, he’s gonna do it anyway.” that youmustcontinue can leverage for further distrust. God, this could’ve been handled better.

You know what I would have loved? If Chris kept uploading because he wanted to see the girls killed. If he kept going against logic to push donotcontinue forward to fill the 'blood meter' higher. That would have made more sense and put a lot more tension onto the series (and honestly where I thought the series was going. He just felt a bit too... Stupid. It felt like there was something more but I was disappointed)

i love how the main character literally just uncovered what has to be the most earth-shattering family secret on the planet and is just not phased by it at all. he just discovered that not only was his dad and uncle a couple of serial killers, but part of a cult of serial killers that was passed down for generations in his family, and his only reaction is "yo where's my girlfriend?"
i also love how he literally went to the serial killer's home to talk to the killer... and didn't call the police 0_0

Perhaps I've seen too many murder mysteries, but the Uncle Don reveal was...well, it was not a surprise. I was expecting it. I wish something more surprising would have come out of the sister, like her being the next disciple or something. Or Emily being another personality or something. But it did do some good things, too.

Absolutely late to the party on watching this, and I apologize if someone else said it before, but I feel like a real easy fix to at least one of the most glaring flaws would change "donotcontinue" to something like "youmustcontinue" and change his directive from trying to get Chris to stop to some version of "now that you've started, you can't stop--no police!". I mean, it's tropey and camp, but sometimes things are cliche because they work. It would have made more sense at least, in my opinion.
I know I’m years late, but to add to the youmustcontintue thing, what if there was a time limit aspect to it? Like he has to upload within a certain time frame to save a girl, and maybe even the police are halting him more cause they’re now re-opening some older cold cases to see if more are connected to his dad’s tapes then we thought, trying to find a new follower of his work, and we can’t have his kid upload any evidence in case we’re wrong so we don’t look extra stupid. Not only does it make the protag seems less selfish, so just becomes more urgent when someone close to him is in danger, but now gives a new angle of the police seemingly not caring to some degree cause “Eh, he’s a killer, he’s gonna do it anyway.” that youmustcontinue can leverage for further distrust. God, this could’ve been handled better.
