YES exactly, that's what jumped out at me, the complete lack of floor noise as the camera moved about was genius. Not only that, but the way the camera actually moves once Steve starts getting strangled: it's not held upright or with an angle that makes sense for any normal person that's holding a camera. It twists suddenly and violently, then slowly continues to rotate and move in closer on Steve, making the shot grow tighter and tighter as the grip on his throat does the same, up until the demon drops both him and the camera. Genuinely incredible cinematography and perfect use of the camera as a part of the action.

Hypothetical: Steve is unreliable as a narrator both to us and Brendan. Sometime after weird shit started to happen he remembered the trap and the move-in-day incident, but wanted to see how far things would go and whether it was actually related. It was Steve, after all, who initially started keeping the record. This is why Steve is the target while Brendan acts as the host, Because Steve wanted to play the game so he's going to play the round until it's done. Honestly when I saw that he still had the trap in his drawer that was my immediate assumption. "This asshole knew the whole time!"

As much as I hate them in the moment, it is the “Steves” that always make these so good. It is the reminder that you have to open the door, you have to play the game for these things to have any power.
That's also why I loved Louise Paxton. Every time she hung out with her lady friends it really felt like it's own "what's better than this? Just gals being regular ol' pals and hanging out" as well.
Honestly it's such a treat to listen to Nick giggle like a giddy schoolgirl over a series that's met his (high) expectations. Props to these guys, I hope they see this!
I love the detail at 32:26 where there's no hand on the door knob, it's a really subtle thing that spoils the twist before you see it but at the same time you don't notice it until a second watch
I actually didn't know that was supposed to be a twist, and was specifically watching to make sure there was no hand on the doorknob to spoil the effect, hah. Weird how we can watch the same scene and come to different conclusions.
you even gotta talk about the episode 12 sound design! When Steve or Brendan pick up the camera, you can hear their fingers on it. You can't hear the demon's though. I was so impressed with that detail
The unfortunate thing about well done sound design is that it's hard to tell someone did anything at all. You want it to sound natural like that, but kinda makes people overlook how important it is to make a believable world.
That specific houseplant is, in my experience, incredibly hard to kill. Drought, extra water, leave on a basement stairwell while out of town, etc. Wonder if that was intentional.
It's a shame this never got any traction. The use of camera tricks and post effects in really simple and clever ways really elevated this series (despite the hopelessly orange blood). I feel like the knives and kill room in the "final" episode were seeds for later parts of the story, assuming we'd learn about the demon's horrible intentions. But even taken as just what's there, that was a pretty solid ghost story
I like to think this was a film school project and these two are now working on a fantastic, fresh, NEW (not reboot, redo, re-up, recycle or up-do of something already done. More than once. 🙄😉Lol!) in the horror genre and will knock it out of the park one day soon on the big screen. God knows Hollywood "horror" is old and tired, I'm afraid my movie gift cards will expire before something worth using them on comes out (in the horror genre anyway, which is really all I go to the movies for)
also can we address how clean that salt cross was? maybe it’s just me, but that was definitely a nice little detail. like it could have looked messy and half-assed but it looked absolutely crisp.

Currently Shudder has several classic Italian giallo films, a pair of absolutely wild Indonesian horror movies, and just uploaded the entire Japanese Ring series.

Honestly, I really like how they really didnt do anything at first, and the spooky stuff didnt initially happen because they did something stupid to piss the demon off; the demon first initiated everything. They only did the salt star and flash camera after the demon showed that its aggressive. Idk, so many movies have the characters provoking the spirits so it feels like they did this to themselves, but this story really does feel like how real people would interact with the supernatural; first with curiosity and denial, then get progressively more scared and paranoid. 10 stars from me!
I admire the tasteful use of jumps in this production. One of the reasons I dont watch a lot of horror is because jumpscares make me feel really unpleasant--had a few bad jumpscare experiences as a kid and am now more scared of them than your average bear. When I go through a horror movie I don't think "oh god ghosts!" but rather "please dont subject me to some loud noise and bright image..."
Late, but exactly right. I don't hate being scared, I HATE being startled. A bad jumpscare is a like a comedian tickling you and saying "you laughed, I'm funny!"
If Paranormal Activity wasn't as successful as it was then noone would of cared to make something like this... Or watched for that matter. You also have to actually tell a story, these youtube show rarely do or are so abstract most people don't care. So I disagree, if anything but PA came out in 2007 the whole genre would still be unknown, not respected at all. The only thing worse than hate is apathy...

Fun fact: in witchcraft if a plant dies despite taking proper care of it, it died protecting you from negative energy. That's part of why witches stereotypically live in the woods; the vast amount of trees and plants give protection as well as isolation.
The only thing I can really think of that could produce that “attack” effect at around 25:20 practically (without any sort of CG effects) would be an air cannon or something. However they did it, it was excellent!
I love how every episode makes a point of showing how loud the floor is when walked on but when the camera starts floating there is no squeaking, so immediately, something is off
The half closed bathroom door at the end of the hallway added a whole level of spooky to this everytime they had to go from the living room to anywhere in the house. They always kept the camera looking at the wall as they turn the corner and that is straight up not cool bro.
This is the story of my life with my one ear hearing. I hear loud noises, go to find them, but can't because mono hearing doesn't let me guess a direction other than "left" and "not left". So weird noises in my room I can't track down is "Tuesday." If I had a spooky monster ghost making horrific banging noises to get my attention, it'll make a horrible ruckus in the kitchen while I proceed to go check the living room...
Sounds like me ! I was born with a deformed right ear, it's extremely small and closed off, I cant hear anything through it. Every sound sounds like it's from the left lmao

Dang, this was *really* good. Like, if I didn’t know better it looked like it was an actual haunting caught on camera with a real demon. The ending was a tad strange but in all honesty, it leaves us to theorize more of what it all meant in the end. And, even though it wasn’t intentional, it was a nice little twist at the end to keep us thinking and well... hauntings rarely end in a good way, right?
Hey Night Mind, I noticed something during this video that I wanted to point out. You questioned at 38:45 why they would include this 'kill room' aspect, why the sheet? Did you notice the decorations scattered around the apartment? The movie posters in every bedroom, the hallway, even the kitchen? These characters are cinephiles. That sheet scene? Psycho from Hitchcock. It could be that the Demon is playing on that, or it could be something more.
Green food dye, that's the trick. The usual corn syrup/flour/water/red food dye mix, but add a few drops of green food dye as well. Best fake blood you can make
Y'know, I'd love a series about a "haunted apartment" thing where the living person manages to enter friendly contact with the ghost, who then becomes more of a roommate. Maybe something based on those Japanese apartments that are infamous for people "dying of loneliness" (suicide) inside them, which many believes leaves them haunted by vengeful ghosts. Like, this guy really needing a cheap apartment in Tokyo finds one that's dirt cheap, with the only caveat that it's previous occupant hung themselves out of loneliness. The guy, being an introvert himself, understands, and after a few early scares, begins trying to approach the ghost calmly, eventually treating them like a friend.
I think the best part about the film is how it feels genuinely like a high-quality student film. I don't actually know if it was produced by a film studio or is actually just a low-budget film series, but either way the acting is strikingly realistic and good and the attention to detail done by the creators is a cut above most other films on this level of production quality.
Best part about these new series (well old series I guess you could say) that Nick shows us is the fact that he gives us a playlist that is in order. I know that's not a big deal to most people, but I've had to skip watching things in their entirety solely because it would take too long for me to watch them in order and I want to enjoy both the series and Nick's coverage and not feel rushed in one or the other. Thank you for that Nick, its honestly the small things that count!

It didn’t feel like human hands were holding it, and the doors fly open without a hand going to the knob. I’d say that was also brilliant camera work. Forgot the exact quote but FreddieW, or one of his colleagues, once said something along the lines of "the best [video] effects I've done are the ones you don't notice", in other words the cleaning up work to make sure the video looks legit when there are other things that originally were in frame. I know nothing about these creators but between hidden cuts (while I'm sure NM scrubbed extremely throughly, I feel like the pan from the knife back to the kitchen was likely a hidden cut) and ensuring any wires were removed through masking, a lot of this can look EXTREMELY clean. Bravo to the creators regardless if this is all vfx with lots of cleaning or just practical, my gut says it's a mix of practical on set with cleaning that have totally bamboozled NM.
I will also say, about the jumpscare, the vulnerability of the lights being off, combined with the audible buildup of the flash charge to key our tension directly to, and the law of three all combined to take a well framed jumpscare to the top.
The ending made me feel satisfied even without a continuation. It leaves many questions still, but you can imagine this is just how the story ends. They both go missing, or are found dead. Or maybe one ends up in jail. You can keep questioning and there are many threads left untied, but sometimes that's perfect. It's a kind of ending I grew up reading, but one I don't see in many other media forms.
another thing about the sequence where the demon is holding the camera: you can tell its the demon right away by paying attention to the doors opening. for both doors, the handle is in the frame and you dont see any hand reach put to turn them. the eoors just fly open in front of the camera. its the little details like this that really make this series shine
I love the part where he tells it to get out and it clearly gets antsy. I always wonder why horror movies with demons, or heck, even ghosts, never ever go with the idea that a living person, by dint of being alive and existing in the physical world, is more powerful than something that isn't. Maybe it's because I was always told this and that if you commanded something like that to leave, it had to obey because you're stronger than it is.
Six months late, but the thing is, you have to BELIEVE you have authority. People scared out of their mind feel powerless, and thus feel they don't actually have the authority.
The one thing I love, is that if that was a one take show...that means dude actually threw that knife. And as someone who throws knifes for fun...that was fucking perfect. And even if it was cut, to cut it so perfectly to look like not only a good throw but a fierce one is top notch for me. Also the Seal is simply suppose to make the demon dizzy Solomon would put them all over the keep the demons at bay to protect him. Same goes for the Triangle, I don't think it's a way of trapping the demon, just confuse and keep it away which leads me to believe the apartment is the problem. Something about the apartment the demon loves.
Personally, as someone who is a strong believer in the paranormal and a spiritual person, this was so amazing and used a lot of terminology I could recognize And good lord the reveal jumpscare was so well pulled off i almost fell out of my seat! It was also so gutwrenching when I saw them do things incorrectly when it came to handling this demon (like destroying the seal underneath/behind the oven and provoking it with the flash) Plus, they set this thing up to be powerful as hell! A demon that can throw and move heavy objects, posses someone, and physically manifest is extremely strong I love this so so much!
Nexpo and Night Mind uploading on the same day made me realize just how similar their voices are...has anyone ever seen them in the same room together??
i did pause this when prompted to then go watch the playlist and it was so much more fun doing it this way. also, i ditto the narration about the attempted attack on Brendan... that moment got me so immersed in this world, it took me awhile to remember that this isn't just actually happening. truly great work and they deserve WAY more hype.

That first jumpscare was INCREDIBLY done!! In addition to everything mr nightmind said, I love the jumpscare itself. It fading in and out with the flashing lights was brilliant, I assume they used some sort of computer animation but it doesnt look like it! Its extremely unsettling, making it feel unnatural without making it look “fake”. I also love how original the demon looks in and of itself, not to say that was its true form, but still it was a pleasant and terrifying change of pace :D

The effects are incredibly well done; like to a point where it almost seems professionally done. My one gripe is that the sound effects they used were really gimmicky. Some of them had risers made by reversing the sound effect and playing it before the sound effect, which is really strange when you think about it, but to find these vfx on a channel with 66 subs is already quite unbelievable. To expect everything done to the same standard is even more so.
If it were me in that house, everything after episode 6 or so would consist of me filming my new house, 5000 miles away from that one. The ONLY unbelievable thing about this whole thing is the fact that anyone could actually *fall asleep* in a place they caught a demon on camera 🤯

I love things like the mattress propped up on the wall and stuff draped on the banister and the big box of trash in the kitchen. Little touches like that make the place really feel natural and lived in. I wouldn't be surprised if this had been filmed in the creators' real apartment.

That jumpscare with the flash is so good, ugh. It is telegraphed perfectly, builds up, uses a noise we know (the flash charging up and being used) and it does the rule of three with two nothings. Nice.
I know it is easy to ignore sponsored bits but that Creepshow series he brought up is legitimately pretty damned good and very in the spirit of the first two movies and Trick r Treat.
Man that was actually really good. I appreciate subtle horror more than in your face horror. The build up. The anticipation. Yes I know something scary is gonna happen. That’s why I’m here. But when you let that anxiety build up over a period of time the pay off is so much more satisfying. And this series did a great job. Really wish it got its season 2 like they planned. Tho I do think it’s current ending is also decently satisfying. In the sense that it can simply be interpreted as they lost and the footage was found after that moment.
Finally a web series, that's better than Paranormal Activity. I assume these guys are studying or visiting a school about filmmaking or some film art kind thing. Great talented guys.
After seeing Night Mind's twitter thread on how numbers are choking out a lot of creativity out of the field I really appreciate him showing a lot of these hidden and underrated gems to me and the broader audience who might have not heard about them before. It's really great stuff.
I can just imagine the guys behind this casually looking back on the channel of one these days and being surprised by the sudden massive increase in viewership.

Honestly, I really like how they really didnt do anything at first, and the spooky stuff didnt initially happen because they did something stupid to piss the demon off; the demon first initiated everything. They only did the salt star and flash camera after the demon showed that its aggressive. Idk, so many movies have the characters provoking the spirits so it feels like they did this to themselves, but this story really does feel like how real people would interact with the supernatural; first with curiosity and denial, then get progressively more scared and paranoid. 10 stars from me!

I admire the tasteful use of jumps in this production. One of the reasons I dont watch a lot of horror is because jumpscares make me feel really unpleasant--had a few bad jumpscare experiences as a kid and am now more scared of them than your average bear. When I go through a horror movie I don't think "oh god ghosts!" but rather "please dont subject me to some loud noise and bright image..."

A bad jumpscare is a like a comedian tickling you and saying "you laughed, I'm funny!"

The only thing I can really think of that could produce that “attack” effect at around 25:20 practically (without any sort of CG effects) would be an air cannon or something. However they did it, it was excellent!

I love how every episode makes a point of showing how loud the floor is when walked on but when the camera starts floating there is no squeaking, so immediately, something is off
The half closed bathroom door at the end of the hallway added a whole level of spooky to this everytime they had to go from the living room to anywhere in the house. They always kept the camera looking at the wall as they turn the corner and that is straight up not cool bro.
This is the story of my life with my one ear hearing. I hear loud noises, go to find them, but can't because mono hearing doesn't let me guess a direction other than "left" and "not left". So weird noises in my room I can't track down is "Tuesday." If I had a spooky monster ghost making horrific banging noises to get my attention, it'll make a horrible ruckus in the kitchen while I proceed to go check the living room...

Dang, this was *really* good. Like, if I didn’t know better it looked like it was an actual haunting caught on camera with a real demon. The ending was a tad strange but in all honesty, it leaves us to theorize more of what it all meant in the end. And, even though it wasn’t intentional, it was a nice little twist at the end to keep us thinking and well... hauntings rarely end in a good way, right?
The demon waited a whole year before doing much. Maybe it just got sick of the dishes piling up and the plants being overwatered

Did you notice the decorations scattered around the apartment? The movie posters in every bedroom, the hallway, even the kitchen? These characters are cinephiles. That sheet scene? Psycho from Hitchcock.

Y'know, I'd love a series about a "haunted apartment" thing where the living person manages to enter friendly contact with the ghost, who then becomes more of a roommate. Maybe something based on those Japanese apartments that are infamous for people "dying of loneliness" (suicide) inside them, which many believes leaves them haunted by vengeful ghosts. Like, this guy really needing a cheap apartment in Tokyo finds one that's dirt cheap, with the only caveat that it's previous occupant hung themselves out of loneliness. The guy, being an introvert himself, understands, and after a few early scares, begins trying to approach the ghost calmly, eventually treating them like a friend.
Look it's obviously not the same but i can recommend Being Human season 1

It was the TH-cam original movie called Ghostmates if I remember correctly.
This was a thing in Angel, after confronting the ghost, it becomes a very sweet roommate
This is actually a surprisingly common webcomic trope when it comes to haunted apartments
I think the best part about the film is how it feels genuinely like a high-quality student film. I don't actually know if it was produced by a film studio or is actually just a low-budget film series, but either way the acting is strikingly realistic and good and the attention to detail done by the creators is a cut above most other films on this level of production quality.
Best part about these new series (well old series I guess you could say) that Nick shows us is the fact that he gives us a playlist that is in order. I know that's not a big deal to most people, but I've had to skip watching things in their entirety solely because it would take too long for me to watch them in order and I want to enjoy both the series and Nick's coverage and not feel rushed in one or the other. Thank you for that Nick, its honestly the small things that count!

Ya know, I love night mind, but I sometimes really question why I decide to watch these at night when I'm a damn wimp.
Forgot the exact quote but FreddieW, or one of his colleagues, once said something along the lines of "the best [video] effects I've done are the ones you don't notice", in other words the cleaning up work to make sure the video looks legit when there are other things that originally were in frame. I know nothing about these creators but between hidden cuts (while I'm sure NM scrubbed extremely throughly, I feel like the pan from the knife back to the kitchen was likely a hidden cut) and ensuring any wires were removed through masking, a lot of this can look EXTREMELY clean. Bravo to the creators regardless if this is all vfx with lots of cleaning or just practical, my gut says it's a mix of practical on set with cleaning that have totally bamboozled NM.
I will also say, about the jumpscare, the vulnerability of the lights being off, combined with the audible buildup of the flash charge to key our tension directly to, and the law of three all combined to take a well framed jumpscare to the top.
Acting on point, storytelling on point, effects on point, editing on point. Imagine what they could do with a professional budget.

When one has a difficult time determining between real and fake, you know it's going to be good.
Before I countinue from 3:50, Anomalies was actually crazy good and I am glad that you brought attention to it.
The ending made me feel satisfied even without a continuation. It leaves many questions still, but you can imagine this is just how the story ends. They both go missing, or are found dead. Or maybe one ends up in jail. You can keep questioning and there are many threads left untied, but sometimes that's perfect. It's a kind of ending I grew up reading, but one I don't see in many other media forms.
another thing about the sequence where the demon is holding the camera: you can tell its the demon right away by paying attention to the doors opening. for both doors, the handle is in the frame and you dont see any hand reach put to turn them. the eoors just fly open in front of the camera. its the little details like this that really make this series shine

I love the part where he tells it to get out and it clearly gets antsy. I always wonder why horror movies with demons, or heck, even ghosts, never ever go with the idea that a living person, by dint of being alive and existing in the physical world, is more powerful than something that isn't.
Maybe it's because I was always told this and that if you commanded something like that to leave, it had to obey because you're stronger than it is.
Six months late, but the thing is, you have to BELIEVE you have authority. People scared out of their mind feel powerless, and thus feel they don't actually have the authority.
The one thing I love, is that if that was a one take show...that means dude actually threw that knife. And as someone who throws knifes for fun...that was fucking perfect. And even if it was cut, to cut it so perfectly to look like not only a good throw but a fierce one is top notch for me.
Also the Seal is simply suppose to make the demon dizzy Solomon would put them all over the keep the demons at bay to protect him. Same goes for the Triangle, I don't think it's a way of trapping the demon, just confuse and keep it away which leads me to believe the apartment is the problem. Something about the apartment the demon loves.

Personally, as someone who is a strong believer in the paranormal and a spiritual person, this was so amazing and used a lot of terminology I could recognize
And good lord the reveal jumpscare was so well pulled off i almost fell out of my seat!
It was also so gutwrenching when I saw them do things incorrectly when it came to handling this demon (like destroying the seal underneath/behind the oven and provoking it with the flash)
Plus, they set this thing up to be powerful as hell!
A demon that can throw and move heavy objects, posses someone, and physically manifest is extremely strong

That first jumpscare was INCREDIBLY done!! In addition to everything mr nightmind said, I love the jumpscare itself. It fading in and out with the flashing lights was brilliant, I assume they used some sort of computer animation but it doesnt look like it! Its extremely unsettling, making it feel unnatural without making it look “fake”. I also love how original the demon looks in and of itself, not to say that was its true form, but still it was a pleasant and terrifying change of pace :D

The effects are incredibly well done; like to a point where it almost seems professionally done. My one gripe is that the sound effects they used were really gimmicky. Some of them had risers made by reversing the sound effect and playing it before the sound effect, which is really strange when you think about it, but to find these vfx on a channel with 66 subs is already quite unbelievable. To expect everything done to the same standard is even more so.
“I’m sending over a paranormal expert”, fully expected it to be that Idubbz-looking guy yelling about Satanic day planners.

I love things like the mattress propped up on the wall and stuff draped on the banister and the big box of trash in the kitchen. Little touches like that make the place really feel natural and lived in. I wouldn't be surprised if this had been filmed in the creators' real apartment.

That jumpscare with the flash is so good, ugh. It is telegraphed perfectly, builds up, uses a noise we know (the flash charging up and being used) and it does the rule of three with two nothings. Nice.
I know it is easy to ignore sponsored bits but that Creepshow series he brought up is legitimately pretty damned good and very in the spirit of the first two movies and Trick r Treat.
Man that was actually really good. I appreciate subtle horror more than in your face horror. The build up. The anticipation. Yes I know something scary is gonna happen. That’s why I’m here. But when you let that anxiety build up over a period of time the pay off is so much more satisfying. And this series did a great job. Really wish it got its season 2 like they planned. Tho I do think it’s current ending is also decently satisfying. In the sense that it can simply be interpreted as they lost and the footage was found after that moment.
Finally a web series, that's better than Paranormal Activity. I assume these guys are studying or visiting a school about filmmaking or some film art kind thing. Great talented guys.
