That odd 1/4 inch socket is used for 1/4 inch hex bits . It allows you to use a ratchet for faster installation/removal of fasteners.

Very nice set! I like tools with trays or foam that keeps tools in place ond order. I believe those are 90 tooth ratchets.

Your driver bits or security bits go into that socket.
