Winters Grip Buried Custer Ghost Town

  • There are many fascinating places with a lot of history and artefacts leftover from the pioneers. Sometimes these places are well documented and visited; other times, you may never know they exist.
    During the mining booms of the late 1800s, towns and camps sprang up all over the west. Some lasted, some didn’t, but life was tough, as with all mining towns. Weather played a huge factor in the town of Custer; a lot of the residents passed from avalanches.

    What a marvelous place Custer is. I love the way it is so wide-open, and available to the public. Thank you to the custodians who preserve the memories and remaining structures and artifacts of this town. *I love all of your videos, Andrea and Steven, but I think this one is my absolute favorite.

    Back in the day, such as the 1800s canvas was used as ceiling material because they did not have another means of finishing the ceiling or because it was less expensive than plaster. The video you did that included the Bird Cage Theater in Tombstone had a canvas ceiling cover that had a mural painted on it. It used to hang on the wall as you go down stairs, but it was missing when you were photographing.

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is always so cool for us when we can find large remnants of the canvas left. Thinking about the hands that hung it up and lived in those places.

      Steven and Andrea are sometimes not accurate, but they do provide something that piques our interest and we can follow up with our own research. I find myself pausing their videos and going into google, google maps, and google images, and often spend more researching what they present than the length of the video. When ya’ll were exploring the town of Cerbat, inside one of the bigger buildings there was a bathroom & shower with some brown nests on the walls. You called them wasp nests; but here in Texas we refer to them as Dirt Daubers. They make a nest out of dirt and mud instead of cellulose or something similar as the wasps do. The wasp’s nest feels like paper. Keep up the great videos!!

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that. I’ve never heard of those. Do they sting?

    • @caryward8251
      @caryward8251 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my personal experience with the Dirt Daubers, I’ve never been stung. Some people say they sting but I’ve never seen them get aggressive at all. I don’t know if you have seen any of them flying around, but the Texas variety has a yellow stripe with a black and/or a dark blue body with a stinger on their abdomen. When building the nest, they will be carrying a wad of mud in their mouth and/or mandibles. Some make a smooth walled nest and some make tiny layers side by side like a wood shingled roof on a house. The latter seems to be a rarer variety. I’ve been around for 74 years, I can’t travel and have the adventures that ya’ll do; but I really enjoy living through your travels. Thank you for putting out these wonderful videos! I also follow several more explorers. Keep up the great work!!

    Sasquatch at *0:37**.* Upper left side between the two left most buildings! I thought that about Stella too! *1:08*
    Curious why they called it *Custer* - perhaps after his famous *golden* locks? I was thinking *Golden Avalanche* might be the town name!
    That school house was so beautiful. The window trim was very fancy! The transom over the front door! The artifacts were amazing. A one person misery whip with coarse front teeth to get the cut going. I’ve never seen a one person whip like that. A great design! We’ll have to research the stove manufacturer. Those would stay warm for hours.
    Can anyone read the name of the Cash Register brand at 20:30 ?
    The vehicle at 13:12 is really interesting. It looks like a six cylinder tug of some sort, custom made to run the rails (presumably ore cart rails). I wish they would protect that from the weather.
