Tuna Door Broke, Boat Taking on Water 30 miles offshore

- Coming home from our weekend in the Bahamas we ran into a little storm. Seas started to get rough, wind and rain picked up, and then our tuna door latch broke causing the boat to start to take on water. We were about 30 miles offshore and Josh was holding the door shut to keep us from taking on any more water. About an hour later Josh started to feel cold and quickly started to lose all motor skills from speaking slow to being able to stand on his own two feet. We quickly realized this was the start of early hypothermia so we stripped him down covered him in warm cloths and got his body temperature back up. Some scary stuff- Who woulda thought, hypothermia in Florida.

Nicely done gentlemen - glad you are all safe and got a decent haul of fish! I've done this many times here on the California coast. Never had this kind of close call but I've been in some rough water that was pretty scary. At the end of the day I'm always tired, in large part because of the scopolamene patch I have to use to keep from puking my guts out on the boat, my legs hurt from trying to stay on my feet in rough water, and I just want to kiss the ground when I get back on solid ground. But there's nothing like fresh fish dinner that night 😋
Jesus hit the power button lock the screens
It’s fun when you are young and bulletproof. I’m 55 now and pick my days carefully. Been there, done that. Glad you guys made it back safe.
fark me...some very grumpy and demanding crew. Could not fish them you are a better man than me!
Whose grumpy? Lol
@overboardfishing exactly everyone's laughing lol good job making it back guys... boat handle it perfectly great size boat
@@overboardfishing only thing i saw was "that beats the meat up" which made me do a massive eyeroll but otherwise they seemed fine
lemon and a bit beer lol bbq nice day
Remind me not to buy a Yellowfin boat or Garmin naval electronics 😳😳😳
I dunno there’s not many other center consoles I’d wanna be on in that. She handled it very well for what it was.
You can lockout the touchscreen. On mine it has rubber buttons going down the side and when I am underway getting pounded you have to use them. No way you could use the screen with any accuracy in certain conditions.
Got more $ than sense fellas. Need to go home and reflect on this one.
After watching this video, I am going with a 36 ft Contender.
If you think it was wet on the yellowfin bring a mask and a snorkel for the contender.
Not a matter of getting wet; I usually fish solo, and the idea of a Tuna door breaking on me is unacceptable, especially on such expensive boat.
A little dramatic boys
Million dollar boat and the garbaje touch screen high level electronics glitching. Non trustworthy. Theres no room for that type of mistake on something so dam expensive. Scam. Give me old fashioned relable instruments that require real talent and training to use.
Poor engineering
Misleading title. Great video but the water entering was minimal.
Truth
Had a 30 foot Grady white Marlin with 72 nm Raymarine radar and every other Raymarine toy. Dodged storms from key West to Tampa no problem. Never got wet and ran 35 mph in 3 ft chop the whole way. That boat was a beast
“If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen out there” Captain Ron.
who designed that? SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER BEEN ON A BOAT!
Even with the bad weather your still in a million dollar yellowfin living and fishing paradise.
its crazy.
sometimes you can die in a million dollar yellowfin
Dam outboards. Sucks to have a wall of them when dragging baits. Nothing like a REAL sport fish; with a pair of heavy diesels in the lowest center of gravity; especially when you're in the slop.
You can lock the touchscreen by hitting the power button, you’ll see a “Lock Screen” option.
Why would such a door open towards the bow (suicide configuration for cars)?
Should have just went to the fish market. It’s a lot cheaper.👈👀
Everybody thinks those touch screens are so great until getting in some real weather
Ya it’s pretty terrible
Can you not lock the garmin touchscreens? I know I can with my furuno TZT3s
Yeah but it would help if the center console actually kept some water out
Install a remote panel with buttons. I don't know garmin but Furuno makes them, when boat at speed much easier to operate mfd's
Seems like you can install some weather shields. Something that slides down to cover screens from spray.
As a captain myself I see lots of problems with this captain. No excuse for this horrible adventure. Overloaded cluttered boat is such a fail. This captain risked lives for a couple bites, very dangerous and just stupid. Someone should lose their charter license.
That sucks. Big ass top of the line center. The seas aren’t even that big and everyone looks freezing and soaking wet and miserable. Constantly wiping down the electronics because they are getting blasted w salt water. That looks like it’s for the birds man.
Big center consoles are dumb. Soaking wet in any weather at all. Electronics not working properly due to touchscreen crap being soaked. I don’t get it. For the price you can get a badass inboard diesel fishing boat with a cabin and not get soaked the whole time.
Ya when it gets sloppy out there not the best thing to be in. But in good weather can’t beat it.
Id be selling that boat pretty quick with one of the dumbest door placements ever seen, take on water from the side will sink you fast. terrible boat company
honestly wish i was there with you guys ..even through the storm ..to me it would be a blast of a trip
It was pretty awesome, storms not so awesome lol.
Lmao this is a normal day fishing in Washington pnw. Bit sporty for you guys? I’ve fish the pacific in some rollers while it was snowing that’s some cool shit! Visibility 0😉
Such a nice boat! Expensive! But while side doors are nice at the dock, not for me. I'll only own a boat with a stern hatch.. Nothing like the potential to loose life on a boat or the boat itself that costs that much due to a failure like that... 🤔
Their's a reason why Tuna/Fish doors are put on the stern of the boat, and they open outwards. At speed, if the door open waters not coming in, only going out. And, with the door opening outwards, water on the outside forces it closed. And, if you happen to take on a lot of water in the cockpit by a wave, you can kick the latch open, emptying the cockpit (just make sure you're not going to get sucked out at the same time). But doors on the sides of the boat are always going to be a weak point unless they are VERY well designed!!!
Yep, and I noticed that this Tuna door is a suicide type door where hinges & latch locations are reversed. Definitely bad design on a boat with Balsa wood.
I wouldn’t consider a boat with a door on port or starboard side. Honestly, even on the stern side has me wondering what if?
@@ronn68 with a stern door, opening out (the only they should), if the latch fails you just tie a line on the latch, tie it to something forward, and your good to go. Any waves that might hit it forces it closed, no water comes in. Underway the waterline should naturally drop anyway.
@@captjohn1124 even a side door that opens out wouldn't be that bad you could tie it off to a cleat, if the latch fails.
@@cannonfodder6299if the hinges are forward
At this point we realized… we should’ve bought a freeman
You’re not wrong 😂
@@overboardfishing all good fun. Yellowfins we’re my favorite boat until I bought a freeman. Love both boats
Hanapaa 🤙 one thing non boat owners will never understand is what BOAT STANDS FOR.
BUST OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND fishing in Hawaii they should have added another T to boat bust out another ten thousand 😂🙌great catch mahalo for sharing 🤙
Sweet ride man, last summer the side tuna door on our 408 pursuit center console gave up about 60 miles offshore and blew inward spraying water with every wave. A little rope action and I had it pulled shut and wrapped around the stern to a cleat. What part of Florida are yall out of
Ya it got a little tricky. We’re in south Florida east coast. Based out of Lighthouse Point.

Touchscreen lock dudes!
Extremely poor excuse for a Transom Door like a REAL sport fish would have. Reminded me of a few years when Lincoln had what many called suicide doors. This is obviously a calm water boat.
Good test for flex seal. Every boat owners should have some at hand.
"dude, don't. don't throw the fish. you are gonna beat the meat up" What!? like the meat/fish wasn't getting pounded in that center box on the whole 30 mile run it. Sometimes you just can't do anything right.
Find a bearing and run off your compass.
Just remember the sailor makes the boat not the boat. Seen grown men turn into soup sandwiches in the chit. Good haul
I’m not an experienced boater, but if a charter captain put me into that situation I would be pissed. The risk vs reward makes no sense. I’d vote to stay in the Bahamas and wait for the weather to improve.
This wasn’t a charter.
@@overboardfishing 6 guys on that little boat is insane.
@@rski1036 that’s NOT a little boat.Ive taken that trip in a 23’ Wellcraft-and got chased home by Hurricane Bob in 1991.Compared to that Wellcraft-this Yelliwfins a cruise ship☠😆
Oh ye "mariners" at least learn how to shut the door.
Not a good ad for yellowfin with the door breaking like that.
Why guys with money buy sport fishers instead of center consoles
Clickbait bullshit.
If you only knew how to operate a boat thats nothing and if you had just set your gps/plotter lock screen you would have been crying also you never use auto pilot in weather like that NOOBS
I take it that was weather radar on the screen on the left.
Thinking about moving to the keys and getting a 31 cape horn.
Yall need some damn curtains on that thing, keeping dry is key no matter the temperature😂got a yellowfin with no cover to be any sort of comfortable
Obvious you know what you are doing, but if I were your captain, everyone would have been wearing a life jacket and I would have a done a SECURITY call to the USCG alerting them that we had a potential problem.
30 miles is a long way to go hoping no other problems arise, especially in that squall. Safety is the captains job #1.
Life jackets yes.. calling cg nkt really.. on lake erie and got into some 6 or better chop. And anyone who knows erie the build fast... called cg about 20 miles out stating our position and vessel... they came back and asked if we needed help at that moment.. said no we under power and moving... the let us know not to call on emergency when there is none. Second they gave us a number to call.. third they asked us to get off 16 and change channel... so that was my experience with cg.
Yall acting like your getting ready to die, little leak from the tuna door and some tiny 3 footers, maybe even 2’s, turn the bilge on
What a stupid design
“Let’s go out in a storm skeeter!”
“Good idea Jimbo!”
I’m confused on why you have to keep touching screen, turn the radar on and chart and roll
why im not a fan of center consoles....big azz boat and cant stay dry! sxks
Nice boat and shitty tuna door lol.. I always wonder what pple like you do for a living to afford boats like that. Any insight??
Don't get into debt studying a useless career.
Do market research as if you were to open a business for any career or job you pursue.
Don't blame other for your mistakes.
Always do your best and have pride in what you do.
Don't take handouts.
Invest and use your money, instead of spending it.
Learn to maintain and repair your own stuff.
If you can't afford to pay for school, look for a job that is will to pay you to learn a trade and build from there.
Don't vote for those who make it easy to take handouts, who don't include financial education in school curriculum and who make it harder for small business to be in business. Because those are who will make good laws to allow you to grow and have more opportunities.
(Basically don't wait for the government to bail you out and don't give away your rights for handouts or so called "safety")

As someone who is considering a center console, I am glad I watched this video. Thank you for posting it.
Slow down a little if your 30 mi out 2hrs of running 15mph is ok
check the weather before you go, could have solved the issue.
Shouldn't rely on a chart plotter for your corse. Always use your compass until inside where you may need some navigational guidance.
I don't rely on it, but I use it all the time. On a longer trip, I pull out my paper navigation charts and run my compass line. That way I can keep an eye on the compass when using the plotter just to make sure the two are in agreement. Never really had it fail. Set the autopilot and let her rip! And if you're really nervous, you can run a second hand held GPS.
Today on why you should never buy a center console you have:
Spend a million bucks on a boat and have to dry the screens every 2mins🥴
Sick boat anyways Bro, just not my preference🤟🤟
when did the brain cells started working during this trip?
Def would like hard glass windshield for this situation. Also that forward seating looks like a real pain.
First time on a fishing boat camera man?
I just don’t understand it for the money for that boat I better be dry.
next time get a dock rope and tie it closed....
Get curtains won’t have an issue with water on your screen
No thanks...I will stick with my lafitte skiff
Insane dropping the cash on a boat you can’t stay dry in
Yellowfins are very nice, in calm water.
Should of tied a line around the handle and to a cleat :)
Use that compass don't ever depend on electrinics
makes me want to NOT buy touch screens!
Oh ye mariners, at least learn how to shut the door!
dont hurt the fish and get your hands off my touch screen. Mo, Larry, Cheese
Dude running the camera doesn’t belong on a boat
I've seen 300lb bigeye lifted over the rails of party boats up here in NJ by 2 guys, never understood these side doors on center consoles
Ya turns out I’m not a fan 😂
I’ve been out in that snot. Sucks.
man the vibes at the dock are lit
How was water getting in the helm area if it's surrounded by windows?
When you head into wind some of it comes around from the stern, including engine exhaust. Backdraft.
lol quit wiping the screen?
Shit designed boat for those conditions.
I have a 39’ Nortech and have the same damn issue. There is a stupid gap between the acrylic windshield and the hardtop, which lets water onto the he and it gets down onto the MFD’s. Having that gap and no windshield wiper is annoying AF
Catching Wahoo like that looks so crap.. Just use stand up tackle…No fun and still chaos even with a
heap of people 🤪
We are high speed trolling at 15-18kn. Have to use heavier tackle for that.
Yeah that’s cool but I don’t know about Electric Reel.. We just use 15 or 24kg standup tackle which is sweet 👍🏽
Each to their own I guess😀🤙🏽
As the great Capt Ron would say… “it could happen to anyone!”
What genius designer made that a suicide door?
you don't realize, 30 miles is nothing if the water's flat and there are no problems, but it's a long swim home if there's a problem. At least you made it back w/ no injuries ? hopefully no injuries ,,,, very important to keep that water on the outer side of the hull.
Definitely a fair weather boat
No, not a fair weather boat. That’s about a 36’ Yellowfin. Pushing $1 Mil..
YF offers multiple layouts, especially on a 42. Trying to split two storms showing red on radar!
Guess no one checked the offshore forecast
These little open plastic boats should stay within a few miles of land. In my almost 30 years of running steel long line vessels, I have seen countless sporties in distress due to inaccurate forecasts, or they were going to outrun the weather.
Where are you guys bases at
I’m thinking next time you’ll simply hit screen lock. Then your screen problems will go away.
Was in a yellowfin 30 miles off of Naples doing a kingfish tournament. Bilge pump belt came off while bait well pump was added water at 1200 gph . Made the boat take on so much water we couldn’t get up on plane. Saved the boat . No one was harmed . Long day on the water.
And thats why I prefer pilot house boats or express boats- been there and done that in a center console- no thanks. And what idiot engineer designed that side tuna door?
Should have bought an Intrepid. Some idiot screwed the latches into the wrong place and they pulled out. Gotta have something for the screws to bite into dummy. TERRIBLE craftsmanship.
As long as your motors running an can get the bow up open the door crank bilge pumps get on the radio with the coast guard with constant position make certain of life jackets get a 5 gallon bucket to aid bilges if possible an haul ass for land
You know not bad for a couple of sussy bakas
play stupid games win stupid prizes. why fly into a storm that large, nonetheless the strongest part of the storm that you can obviously see with radar. it can be nice weather and go to scary real quick with those storms
That’s let water on the deck not in the bilge! Water on the deck doesn’t matter it’s the bilge you gotta worry about! The tuna door doesn’t empty into the bilge the bilge is sealed off from there! So no worries
pizza sounded like it taste good 😂😂. glad you guys made it back safe and MAN what a haul 🔥🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼
Armature crew
Needs work
Clickbait
Camera didn’t do justice. Also the guy holding the door shut with his feet for 45 mins almost got hypothermia we had to strip him down and throw him underneath to get him warm, he lost all motor functions for a little bit.
If your taking on water
did nobody bother checking the weather forecast. very irrisponsible of the skipper to go out in that. absolute tool
Was coming back from the Bahamas. Storm decided to turn. If you’ve been on the water enough you will get caught in snotty weather that’s a definite ask any captain.
Andre you obviously have never fished offshore in S. Florida. A storm can pop up in an hour here with no warning. You are the tool for commenting on something you know nothing about.
