Restoration of subtropical grasslands in Brazil

Abstract
Brazil's subtropical grasslands, located in the Pampa and Atlantic Forest regions, are unique and highly diverse ecosystems. They are threatened by conversion and invasive species, yet ecological restoration still is at its beginning. In the talk, Dr. Overbeck will present the current state of the art in restoration practice and research and discuss main challenges for scaling up restoration efforts.
Speaker bio
Gerhard is a vegetation ecologist, Professor at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil, where he is currently Head of the Botany Department. He works mostly on South Brazilian grasslands, with a focus on a better understanding of ecological processes (i.e., diversity patterns and drivers; interactions between trophic levels; effects of management) and improving knowledge in conservation and restoration of these unique and diverse grassland systems. He received a PhD in Natural Sciences (2005) from Technical University Munich, Germany.
