He was the coolest for being laid back and not a jackass with people.
He could hold it down and his vocal will be missed. Do you really think there will be a tribute band with Al and Dave. LOL. Those two guys will cut him out like Oz and Tony on the Black Sabbath last tour. They'll offer him $40,000 and a $5 gift card from Hot Topic. Stay with the Circle.

One of the greatest backing vocalists in rock. And a very supportive team player. Rather than showing off his obvious chops, he focused on what best served the song to make way for EVH and DLR / Hagar - even when that meant just punching a single note. And a genuinely nice guy to top that off.

'Tight as fuck' sums him up perfectly. Well put. There's a concert recording called 'Live in Devore, California' from the Dave era. He's in so tight with Alex, he's like a third kick drum. And he stretches out melodically as the space opens up in the live setting. Great player. Oh, and check out the pre-debut demos you can find all over TH-cam, for a better idea of what he can do than their records will give you.

I'm glad you did this vid. Michael Anthony has always been easily one of my very favorite bassist period. He always happens to be the reason Van Halen has arguably the best backup vocals of any Rock N Roll band. He's bailed out Sammy Hagar and DLR out live more than a few times. Great bassist when it comes to making the song as whole better, tone, texture, stage presence and yes he's the pulse of the band.

I watch a lot of bass videos from well known and some less well known TH-cam bass personalities. I appreciate them all, but this is absolutely my favorite series to watch right now. Not only do I get ideas to incorporate into my own playing, I am also turned on to players (and bands) that I didn’t know or would have just looked past or dismissed. Keep up the seriously great work! I still am interested in a feature on Derek Smalls 😉 there must be others with me on this!

Right on comment! And he still sings as high as he does to this day! I never thought he was, is underated! He was so much a part of the Van Halen magic in the beginning! Things happens in bands no one knows about. Only what the press puts out there. Unless anyone knows them personally? No one will know the real story about his leaving Van Halen.

This is what I did talk about in another video that I watched, about "bad bassists", the beautifullness of bass playing don't resides in shredding bass, but in the creativity and in the case, the f%+king tempo plus the work well done in melody.

  • @danieljohnston1798

That whole thing about Eddie showing Mike how to play parts is taken out of context and just not true. Well, not the early Van Halen when they were more of a band. But when Eddie started righting bass parts in his 5150 studio Mike was no longer involved in writing his own parts, so it's a true statement, but only in the van hagar years when Eddie was a control freak and played all the instruments. I'm surprised he didn't tell Al what to play to. I'm not knocking Ed, I love Ed Van Halen, he was one of the greats. But Mike was fantastic player than needed no help. You can tell the bass lines were written by a guitar player on the van hagar stuff, where as early Van Halen the bass parts were written by a real bass player

    • @57precision

I can definitely hear that. People like to knock MA for this, but you know what? It was Eddy's band, and there is no shame in playing what the band leader tells you to play. MA always took the high road and was the bigger person for it.

Thank you! Awesome presentation of how great he is on bass! He drives the pulse forward, so much so Wolf played his parts and kept his same pulsing 1970's style even for the new songs for ADKOT. . This video shows how important his bass playing is. And so what if he came over to film eddies new guitar parts with a video camera in 1983? Wasn't he doing his job and learning all of intricate and fusion-like parts of the greatest guitarist of all time? It's also worth noting Mike is still married to his high school gf and enjoys his home by the ocean, well deserved success!

Mike played what seemed to be simple parts during main riffs & the chorus. The trick in VH was the off beat timing and how he rode Alex’s drums. Mikes real magic were the change ups & guitar solo. There are some songs where Mike almost knocks the legs out from under Ed. Ex Girl Gone Bad. Lots of deep tracks are like that, and the real awesome stuff is live. Listen to Bottoms Up live & Mike rips it apart.
FYI he’s left handed but plays right.
With CF & the Circle I love listening to Mike just groove with the drums. He’s outstanding.

No!! Not true!

  • @mattpeterson553
    @mattpeterson553 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, I had listened to Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee, and Steve Harris, but what got me (as a non-musician) was how clear and powerful the bass was on the first four albums. It was there, and it was a big part of each song. That's when I became interested in Micthaal Anthony (even though I was budding guitarist), and before I reliazed he was responsible for 40% of the vocals. The whole video camera thing is the biggest crock, and seriously stains Eddie's legacy.

It’s sad how Ed started treating Mike. The man can play the hell out of the bass, just look up the 1979 soundboard recordings of You Really Got Me. Eddie forced him into 8th note hell after the first 5 albums. Consequently, VH music never matched the first few albums after that.
