I liked it when you said,”being an expert in the beauty industry doesn’t make you qualified to interpret science!”....You are right about that because that’s where we hear it...🤔Thank you Dr Dray ☕️💕
Many of the expensive skin care lines out there are created by people who list this "expertise" as their credentials for knowing how to formulate sound products.
I agree, but I had such an unpleasant situation today. I went to a drugstore to buy body sunscreen, and I picked the garnier one because it has titanium dioxide so I supposed it was a mineral or combined one, and I asked the pharmacist there if she could help me choose between two types, and she said very arrogantly and scornfully how she only knows about those 'medical' creams as she calls them (and none of those medical ones is mineral for instance, and each of them is 30 euros plus). I mean she wasn't doing anything, was it so difficult to take a look and advise me? I guess my point is not all of these 'beauty' industry products are bad, and I don't like pharmacists being arrogant about it, it just makes me assume she doesn't know how to read ingredients.
Shaaade for the whole online ‘beauty guru’ community! Im so glaaaaaad to have found this channel. Im addicted to your videos Dr Dray. U are heavent sent!
She’s a shill. She’s basically telling you the cheap chemical crap you’re buying from multi conglomerates aren’t harmful because there isn’t conclusive proof. If conclusive proof was the standard there would be no scientists.
In so glad that my psy class in college taught how to read a peer reviewed study vs the reporting on said study. It showed how when the media condenses a study into layman's terms, they pick what they believe is the most news worthy aspect of the study while leaving behind the meat and potatoes because that part is boring. Our culture is very into news reports on studies which can be interpreted several different ways by the media leading to misunderstanding between scientists and regular people. Conspiracies often arise from this, not just in personal care, but in all aspects of scientific research. And while in personal care issues, we can laugh at the silliness of how these studies were misunderstood, it creates major issues when it involves other types of misconceptions about studies in politics, economics, environmental studies, space research, and more. And it has lead to science and scientists being distrusted by segments of our population, as we see today. It's a sad state of affairs when research papers that take years of hard work and testing and research to create are used to discredit the very science behind them. We as a society need to take media reports and marketing strategies with a grain of salt when it comes to these reports, and realize that marketing has an agenda, to sell us products, not to give us the truth about studies. They have a spin to everything they write.
Thank you for clarifying this ridiculous theory,we as consumers need to stop being led around by cosmetic companies that just want us to spend money on they're overpriced and often harmful or useless products. Thank you Dr. Dray 😊💕
I think this SLS fear started with that guy who created WEN. Wish gave rise to the natural hair community., I think TNHC is what really put the SLS fear on the map.
@@nibbax7772 People have been using Head & Shoulders for decades and I don’t think there’s been any proof that it has caused anyone harm as long as it wasn’t ingested.
Can you please make a video on hair oiling? Is it okay to oil the hair with oils such as coconut, almond, and castor oil, etc., leave the oil in overnight, then shampoo in the morning? Does oiling damage the hair follicle? Does it help the hair and do good or does it not matter? Thank you so much. You're so intelligent and articulate I'm in awe of your dermatological prowess.
As a Cosmetic Chemist, I can say that it is NOT our industry that is anti-Sulfate, it's the MARKETERS & web groups like EWG, that love to produce Chemophobia in people. I am perfectly fine using Sulfates, Parabens, BHT, Nano-sized, etc.
Many of the expensive skin care lines out there are founded by people who list beauty industry "expertise" as their credentials for knowing how to formulate sound products. They isolate ingredients and make claims about them based on misinterpretation of scientific, often very preliminary, studies. This leads to fear mongering and alienates affordable alternatives, which in reality are safer choices for skin health.
I have had cancer in my family (currently they're all gone, grandma (on dad's side), 2 aunts (by marriage), mom's cousin, and a friend of my youngest aunt). Pancreatic, and breast being the culprits. I hate hearing things like "it's carcinogenic". What I have learned from all these ladies is that you get it or you don't. They have lead comparatively very healthy lives and still got it. I don't get what they could have done wrong, there is no one factor to cancer!
Dr Dray, that's all right. The pancreatic cancer spread fast, I know that much (my aunt was *very* secretive about it all, and didn't want many people to know until the very last few days). She just turned 70 and a few days later she passed away. 70 is not young, but it is too young to die, especially in this day and age.
I'm sorry to hear about your cancer losses, Marleen. We still know so little about cancer. The only things I can say definitively are proven to be carcinogenic are smoking and UV exposure.
WiseFamin, my parents are in their early 70s and have been smokers all their lives, they are fine. Then how do you explain cancer in babies and small children?
Marleen--Sorry, I meant to say that smoking and UV radiation are two known, proven factors that lead to cancer (specifically, lung cancer and skin cancer), but cancer is such a complicated disease that we can't say say exactly what causes it and why. Why do some smokers get cancer but others don't? Why do some never-smokers get cancer from secondhand smoke? Why do some people in a family get sick but others in the same family don't? So many factors and so much we still don't know. But we do know that quitting smoking, eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, using sun protection diligently, and getting enough sleep can reduce your risk of developing a number of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and dementia. That's what I meant to say. The rest is out of our hands.
The only reason I have heard for avoiding sulfates is that it strips hair color.... so, that expensive salon visit will last longer if you go sulfate free. Once again, a very informative video. Thanks!!
Cindy Z you can buy certain shampoos with sulfates, if you have color treated hair. I have blonde highlights and use whole blends shampoo, which is color safe. I think it’s more box color that’s easily washed out
I really hated that whole "shampoo is bad" trend that was going around. I wash my hair everyday because I tend to get oily at the roots, and a greasy-haired co-worker of mine shrieked at me "That's soooo bad for your hair!!!!" I told her that my hair is perfectly healthy and I've been shampooing daily since I was about 10. She rolled her eyes at me and went off to smoke a cigarette! Not kidding.
That's rude of her to judge 😬 I'm in the hairdressing industry and I shampoo my hair with sulfates every 2-4 days. It's really just whatever works for you! Shampooing less often is ideal for me, because I just don't have time
My ex-mother-in-law shamed me by telling me I'd get cancer from scraping a teflon pan all the while she was smoking. Your comment reminded me of that. Some people are so clueless.
Yeast. 🤢 Great video! May I make a suggestion? I don’t usually ask about certain topics, as you seem to answer all of my questions, but could you talk about the use of silicones in hair and face products? I have been told that they build up in the hair, clog up your pores, etc. blah, blah, blah. 😆 I would love if you did a, “are silicones bad” version. Actually, I would love if it became a series. ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for the outpouring of info, as always!
I've had problems as a hairstylist with clients having a build up of silicones on their hair that had an unpleasant texture and oxidative hair color would not penetrate. I don't know of any health problems for hair caused by silicones (but I'm not a health expert!) Only cosmetic concerns. After a clarifying treatment the hair can be stripped of enough silicone build up to take oxidative color so it's not a big deal even then, just a slight inconvenience.
I don't know about silicones for skin, but silicones for hair is definitely not healthy. I builds up and can only be breaked down with the use of sulfates. The curly girl method quits both silicones and sulfates for hair and my hair feels sooo much more healthy
@Username that is not true. Silicone is built up in Texturing Spray's, Creams, Pomades, Hairspray, Heat Protectors, Shampoo, Conditioner, Hair Smoothing Oils/ Creams especially thing's that adds volume to hair. List goes on and on. Alot of people don't realize it. This doesn't make people stupid or RETARDED. How childish. It's in everything in hair care. If it's in the Shampoo/ Conditioner how umm how do you except them to wash it out. ..
This video is SO helpful!! I recently came across a TikTok saying that SLS is extremely harmful and a carcinogen. The guy was selling a different product in the comments, so I wasn’t sure and wanted to research this more. You are very intelligent, and I’m glad you cleared this up! Thank you!
As someone who recovered from cancer, it peeves me to see fear exploited for monetary gain so blatantly. There are legitimate risks we expose ourselves to, but we need to do our due diligence to ensure we are following the best evidence, not some corporate or industry agenda.
We need to teach more science in Lower, Middle and Upper School. The children will better understand your important videos. Every adolescent kiddiewinkle needs to watch this . Journalists are largely unqualified to write on this. Reading PubMed abstracts does not a scientist make. Wild applause for you, Dr. Dray.
Thanhs for this video Dr Dray. The cosmetic industry and rumors can really scare people sometimes. Its so nice we have someone that gives us the science because otherwise we would never know. Youre the best. Thanx
Thank you for explaining this, Dr. Dray. I have been trying to avoid Sulfates because I have untreated thinning hair due to aging, hormones and or heredity. I was worried that my once thick hair was going to fall out faster due to Sulfates. Now I understand that I can use all those bottles that were purchased before this "scare," in rotation with my sulfate-free ones. Good grief! So glad that you are here with us!! Thankful to you for all that you do! ♥
Your channel has been so so helpful. I hopped on the no SLS, no dimethicone bandwagon and never found a shampoo and conditioner in that category that I really liked. Then I tried your suggested No Nothing Moisture like and I loved it, but realized that the combo contains both SLS and dimethicone. I had to find a video of your perspective of SLS, and I’m so glad you’re not against it!
Thank you so much for addressing this topic. I am a breast cancer survivor and I can not tell you how many people warned me about sos and how I spent so much time looking for sos free products. It was unnecessary stress.
Thank you for this! I have believed that sulfates are bad for a long time! Can’t stop watching your informative videos! This one and the medical skin care videos have changed my life! Thank you so much Dr Dray. 🙂
Thank you for this video! You definitely deserve more attention than the other “beauty gurus” in TH-cam who pretend to be beauty experts but have no science or facts to prove their claims!
I've never really heard of sls being carcinogenic but I choose not to use it because it massively dries out my skin and hair. This doesn't work well with waist length hair.
Yeah it makes my skin too dry when i use sls contained facewashes... And feel itchy too.but it can be solved by moisturizing but how come i manage to moisture my skin every time i wash it!
I'm been using sulfate free shampoo for a few months and it made my hair worse. My hair got greasier, oilier, and thinner and itching. I realized that my hair likes sulfates. It gets rid of my buildup and hair product.
I am a modified curly girl (meaning I basically follow the curly girl method but not 100%) and limit my use of SLS because it dries out my hair. I had no idea this other info had been flying around. Good grief. This is like the baby shampoo danger all over again. This is just so crazy.
What I hear the most, is "it strips your hair of its natural oils." (aka clean your hair and scalp.) The one bad thing about it is that SLS is (often) made from palm oil - which is not very environmentally friendly. PS. Use conditioner. :)
Check out before/after pictures of the Curly Girl Method. If the sulfates and silicones are good to the hair - how come the hair on the after pictures look sooo much better after excluding these ingredients in their routine?
@@pernillev.k9541 it totally depends on your hair structure. Kinky hair is often already a very dry hairtype, which means that the oils the scalp makes often doesnt reach the ends of the hair. So if they use more agressive cleaners, their hair will be more dry. Its all about what hairtype and how senstive your scalp is
@@denise69 I don't agree. I've seen all hair types in the curly girl method-facebookgroups and they all claim to have gotten much more healthy hair after quitting these ingredients. I just started myself and I also see a difference even though I've only been following the method for two weeks now. My hair feels much more healthy. And I don't have kinky hair - I have wavy hair. We don't need all these harsh chemicals.
@@pernillev.k9541 well like I said, it all about your hairtype and what works for you. I for example have caucasian straight hair and it get oily so I will need some sulfates to keep it clean and keep my pores from clogging. Its all about trail and error ;), and lets be real, that is where all the fun is right 😍
Dr Dray, thank you for what you do and the knowledge that you share. I hope more people do this and be as "conscious", as well as unbiased, when it comes to cosmetic consumerism. Most people nowadays only cared about the price tag and follow the celebrities that market them. Ignorance is definitely not an excuse. Conscious consumerism takes hard work. Unfortunately, most people take the easy road by believing all the biases that media feed them.
I am in the beauty industry, I try to educate clients with perspective. I always recommend products for each person separately because no two people have the same hair! I am very aware of marketing propaganda and I’m never afraid to research a product!
My hair is naturally curly, and I follow the curly girl method - cgm- (no sulfates, silicones, waxes and drying alcohols). I have been using products containing sls&silicones before that, and my hair was always dry, straw like and frizzy. Since I switched to low-poo (cocamidopropyl betaine) cleanser and cgm approved hair products, my hair is properly moisturized, much better looking, growing faster and overall healthier. I avoid buildup causing, non-water soluble ingredients (like oils and shea butter), and also use a "stronger" clarifying product (DevaCurl buildup buster) every 4-5 weeks. I have also started using a massaging shampoo brush, to stimulate the blood flow in my scalp and help with removing the dirt at the same time. I can't speak for people with straight hair, but I would strongly recommend avoiding harsh surfectants to wavy/curly haired people. Of course, if you don't use harsh cleansers, you also have to adjust other products you are using, to avoid "suffocating" your hair and scalp.
Vivian, the Hashimoto's Facebook groups are the worst! Ugh, just because something does or doesn't work for someone else doesn't mean I will get the same results. It's as bad as people arguing over politics!
Dr. Gray, I’d also really appreciate if you could make a video discussing Denatured Alcohol/Benzyl Alcohol/ SD Alcohol or the so called bad alcohols. That would be very interesting , considering the conflicting information out there and especially why are they massively included in products for oily/combination skin
I have dry sensitive skin and I can’t tolerate cleanser with SLS. I can use it in shampoo and toothpaste and be fine but putting it on my face seems to be problematic for me.
I really dont understand why some ppl really have an obsession over "natural ingredients". Nothing abt our pursue is natural. Our standards for hair and skin are not natural..most ppl dont have the genetics to have "perfect" skin or hair. A lot of ppl see indigenous women all over the world have beautiful hair and they never used sls, silicone. They wash their hair with plants-deriven homemade blend and put on a lot oils. Their hairs look amazing, it is true. But they all have straight, dark hair. Nobody uses a picture of curly hair ppl live in isolated communities to prove the point "natural is better". Straight dark hair is normally large in diameter, low porosity etc, easy to take care of. And if a group of ppl live in a related isolated area... founder effect.... Plus they probably never use curling iron, blow dryer or bleach their entire life.
I will say that many hair stylists will tell you to avoid SLS for color treated hair or damaged hair because it will strip color or cause more hair damage. I’ve been encouraged by my stylist to go days without shampooing. I refuse to follow this advice because my scalp is very oily and the hair looks awful after skipping washing. I’ve been told the scalp will adjust and eventually you can go longer and longer between washing. I find dry shampoo extremely drying to the scalp and only use it in a pinch. I sort of think it’s the no poo movement that has caused this sulfate free movement.
hair dye is another problem territory in and of itself. It makes sense that not shampooing would make the color last longer, but not great for seborrheic dermatitis and other scalp issues
I was like you also with oily scalp and had to wash daily but my scalp was always super itchy and angry. SLS is safe but it turns out that I can't tolerate it and was getting a massive rash. My scalp was so oily because it kicked into overdrive in an attempt to protect itself so I was making way too much oil. Now I use a shampoo with Coco-betaine instead of SLS and my hair only starts to get oily after 5+ days which is crazy considering how I was before. It took my scalp about 2 months to calm down and acclimate. I'm not saying you will have the same results, or even saying you should try it but just thought id share my experience because I thought I had to live like that washing and drying my curly hair every single day and it was a huge nuisance and took so much time. Now I only wash my hair every 3rd day and it's amazing and I'm way more comfortable. Good luck, do what ever works best for you :)
If you want an extreme story, I bought into the whole “no-poo” thing a few years ago as a teen. I didn’t wash my hair for over a YEAR. Everyone always says that your hair will acclimate after a few months, blah blah blah. My hair smelled bad and never acclimated. So no, not washing your hair will not necessarily fix the oil problem.
Cass E oh yeah I’ve done a lot of reading on the topic and come to the conclusion that the no poo movement is disgusting. If you wouldn’t skip washing the skin on your body or face for weeks, why would your hair/scalp be any different? I understand people with damaged hair wanting to skip some days between washing but not weeks or months. Your scalp builds up sebum and that starts to smell awful.
I wonder if you would be interested in talking about hair dye in one of your videos. There are other more important stuff but hair dye can be particularly nasty to skin and it seems that not many people are aware just how bad it is.
It makes sense that the beauty industry would try to convince you that certain Ingredients are bad for you so that you "need" a new product. I had no idea this is what makes them more expensive. Pretty soon they'll be selling us water in a bottle for.$80. I used shampoo with sulfates my entire life up through the 70s and 80s as a teen and young woman, and I had the most amazing, thick wavy hair down to my derriere, lol. My hair is fine and thick. I still have great hair at 61, but I cannot find a Shampoo and conditioner I like. They all seem to weigh down my hair and it feels clumpy. I have tried very expensive shampoos and conditioners. I've used every Davines product as well as Kevin Murphy ($$$) because that what my salon sells and stylist recommends, but I think I need those sulfates to help with product build up and to keep the volume. I think I'll try Biolage. Are there any others anyone can recommended that have sulfates but are not too drying, please let me know. Thank you, Dr. Dray.
Hi Dr. Dray! Aside from the interesting and important information you impart in your videos, I'm sure I'm not the only subscriber who is interested in your personal and minimalistic style. Your apartment is like a breath of fresh air! Would you consider doing a video about how you organize your home, kitchen, bedroom, etc.? I've seen a few vlogs walking us through your closet (capsule wardrobe and around the apartment before moving in), but I"d be so interested in learning about your mindset / organization / apartment-style! As someone who seems to always have 'stuff' everywhere, I think I would be able to learn a lot from you on this subject (and maybe others would be interested also)! Thank you!! :)
I agree with all of your points about sls, but personally i find a lot of shampoos with it pretty drying. I still use them, just with low concentrations and alternating between low sls shampoos and sulfate free ones. I find that using color friendly hair shampoos (that usually don’t have sulfates, as to not strip the dye from the hair) even as someone without colored hair helps a lot. Thank you for making this video! I think it’s important for people in the beauty industry to specify that sulfates are not bad for you or carcinogenic, (although they may be too drying for some people), rather than preying on our fears of cancer and chemicals.
You are hilarious. You always clear things up for me and I appreciate it. I am in beauty and guilty of thinking sls is demonic. I do not always share that.
Thank you SO much for taking the time to educate us. I have admittedly pursued “clean beauty” because of what I have read that I am now learning is not based on fact! I listen to at least one of your videos each day and continue to learn so many valuable and tangible things that are already positively influencing how I approach skincare and what I purchase. Keep it up. We need to know this 👍🏻
Thank you for leading me down the longest rabbit hole of lifestyle changes I need to make. I appreciate your research, and I was shocked that I hadn’t subscribed until today, because I have definitely watched enough videos of yours to at least contribute to your subscribe count for what it’s worth
The only thing sls's are not the best for is leave-in products such as hair products and facial toners and creams only because of it's cleansing and potentially stripping agents. What it will do is overly produce sebum production in the hair and skin. By the way love you Dr.Dray, keep on posting amazing educational content!
Personally I think SLS is relatively safe and I hate to add to the poor perceptions of SLS but I was really struggling with excess oil production, insane itching, and dermatitis on my scalp, it was messing with my sleep and made me miserable. My DR and I tried everything we could think of but nothing helped until I moved over to a SLS free "low-shampoo" that uses Coco-Betaine as a mild surfactant insted of SLS. For people like me with very sensitive scalps "low-shampoo" and "co-washes" (which is basically conditioner with a surfactant added) are a God send. So far the two best ultra-mild shampoos I've found here in Europe are L'Oreal Elseve Color-vive Low-shampoo which has a texture just like conditioner but it gets you clean, it's really strange but amazing, and Bioderma Node non-detergent fluid shampoo which is a little stronger cleaning wise and has a super runny water-like consistentcy. So even though SLS isn't the devil it's made out to be it can really wreck your scalp if you happen to have a sensitivity to it like I do. Luckily most people can tolerate SLS fine but It's nice that more SLS-free shampoos are being made available.
I have the same problem and have been using SLS free shampoos for years. It irritates my scalp and makes it much drier than non-SLS shampoos. As many have commented, there are plenty of non-SLS shampoos OR those with milder formulations of sulfates that work just fine and cause much less irritation, itching, dryness, and flakiness.
I too figured out that if I use the L’Oréal one in between regular sls shampoos, my scalp has chilled out. My scalp gets so unbelievably dry using sulphate shampoo every day, but if I switch off with the L’Oréal no sulphate, my scalp stays balanced. This also depends on the season, and what type of weather I am dealing with. I know exactly what you mean, and it does make a world of difference to switch formulas if your scalp is very dry and itchy. ❤️❤️❤️
I don’t have a sensitivity to sulfates fortunately. While I like both, I prefer Paula’s Choice shampoo over Free and Clear, because of the sulfates. My hair is fuller and looks nicer with the PC. Now, if I could find a fragrance free hairspray that actually works! Fragrance free products are made mostly for a large range of sensitive people, and they tend to take out the parts that work. Thanks for another informative video!
Thanks Doc, I'm just starting to think about the different types of soaps/shampoos that I'm using on my body and the whole sulfate debate was a little concerning. I appreciate the scientific insight you give, it was very helpful.
Aside from Sulfates one thing I can say about Sodium Loryl Sulfate as well as Sodium Laureth Sulfate sould be totally avoided if you have acne or sensitive skin in cleansers. It's sad to see most cleansers that target acne skin have SLES! They inflame skin making acne worse. Always stick to gentle soothing cleansers!
Thank you for this rational scientific video. The only reason why I use a baby shampoo without SLS is simply that I'm trying to grow my hair very long and I find SLS shampoos quiet drying, but once in a while to get rid of product build up I absolutely need to use an SLS Shampoo.
Long before the current anti-sulfate sentiments appeared, I identified sulfates (particularly SLS) as causing stripping problems with my skin and hair. SLS isn’t the only one, either, but it’s the worst.
Outside of the fear mongering I think its okay for people to exclude or avoid many ingredients such as SLS. I am one of those people who is VERY easily inflamed and allergic to so many things like propylene glycol, sls, titanium dioxide, etc. I even have to watch out for toothpaste! Plus if you get keratin treatments you can't use sls, sles or sodium chloride(salt) in shampoo BUT there are many suitable surfactants that work amazingly well to clean =)
I have the same problem. I do not like SLS's because I have contact dermatitis that SLS's trigger. I agree with what she is trying to say, but my sensitive skin makes me a bad candidate for SLS's.
She is talking about the scalp and not the skin. The scalp produces a lot more oil than the skin and so can tolerate SLS, while it may be too harsh for the skin.
I hate those harsh sulfates for my scalp, hair and skin myself. For years, I use these for my hair. Now, I'm suffering from it and trying to heal from irritations (inflammation). BTW, I have natural dry skin (keratosis pilaris) and didn't realized my scalp was naturally dry too until a few months ago.
To be fair, many who work with creating new beauty products are chemists specialized in cosmetics. But these usually work for the big brands, which is why purchasing mainstream beauty products might actually be safer than some small brand that claims their products are "clean" but actually have no idea what they're doing. Not saying big brands don't ever make shitty products, they do, and they use shitty strategies to market them as well. (Like jumping on the SLS hate trend.) But if a big brand makes a product that is truly unsafe, it will be pulled off the shelves really quick because they don't want to get sued, and since this is such a waste of money they don't usually take those risks.
I'm not surprised by this fact, since the beauty industry has A LOT of BS. Anyway, I avoid SLS because it's drying. It's not like I die from it, but it will make the skin irritated and make it produce more oils.
A lot of drugstore sulfate shampoo are way too drying. However a good quality professional shampoo that contains sulfates, are amazing! And they can actually be less drying than some sulfate free drugstore shampoo
My hair dries out a lot if I use harsher sulfate shampoos. I have to use the softest stuff I can get my hands on, and I always do an oil treatment before shampoo and an hour long deep conditioning treatment afterwards. I also have to do conditioner-only washes every other washing session to reduce exposure to even gentle surfactants as much as possible, because of endless dryness. It's the only way my hair can grow long and be healthy.
I had never even heard of a cancer connection to SLS.😮 All I really am aware of is sulfates in shampoos can cause hair loss. It was certainly true for me. I used to lose a lot of hair every time it washed. The drain screen was depressing to look at after my shower. As soon as I switched to non sulfate shampoo, I hardly even have to remove any hair from the drain screen. Color me happy. 😁
It helps to do a hot oil treatment before applying shampoo. I do coconut oil or argan oil for at least 20 minutes then shampoo. You'll see no hair in the drain
Have you heard about the curly girl method? When following this method you should not use sulfates in shampoo or silicones in the conditioner - you can clearly see the difference in the before and after photos! I haven't tried this method myself, but I plan on doing so. Many shampoos with sulfates are too harsh and it's hard to wash silicones out of the hair without sulfates. So it quickly bacomes an evil circle.
Thank you for this! Very interesting information and I was never worried about health effects from SLS but I do know that it is a known skin irritant and that's why I try to stay away from it :). I mentioned in a comment but you might miss it, at some point, I would like to listen to you discuss hair dye. I know that not many people are aware of the effect it can have on your skin and although you have other important subjects to discuss, hair dye does affect a lot of people (no pressure!). Happy Wednesday!
I love your videos , I have been watching you for like a month now, because i wanted to give a change to my beauty product. Your videos helped me so much to understand so many thing about skin, products, ingredients. I like and trust and feel comfortable to understand your videos because you are not trying to sell the product but actually find the right persona for it right fit. " not all the product are made for everybody" Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me !!!! :)
I really appreciate your videos so very much!! I got tangled up with a cosmetic company that said all of this stuff was horrid! I got out of it, thankfully!! My friend said it really well when she said people are fear mongering! I could go on and on! Thanks again so much for your honesty!!!
I have perioral dermatitis, and my dermatologist tells me to stay away from SLS and its derivatives in all my soaps. I'm even told to stay away from hot and spicy foods, toothpaste with SLS and fluoride. Would you recommend the same treatment for perioral dermatitis?
Again you have debunked a lot of hype that we have been fed by the cosmetic and personal care ‘police’! Thank you for honestly giving us the truth so we as consumers can make informed decisions for our product purchases that won’t drain our wallets! Thanks again Dr. Dray!😩💸💰
Sulfate shampoos make my scalp itch. When I use sulfate free shampoos my scalp doesn’t itch at all. Also I like sulfate free shampoos because I color my roots often and it helps with making the color last longer.
I am like you and can only use SLS very gentle shampoos and I have found that not all SLS free shampoos are gentle. I have narrowed it down to Desert Essence and Deep Steep that do not cause me scalp to peel and go crazy. That being said many people do not have these sensitive skin issues, so I would just say if you have a sensitive scalp or eczema, etc stay away from anything harsh in shampoos, lotions, etc Pretty common sense stuff.
@@shaneelarahman484 My favorite have been the brands Deep Steep and Desert Essence both I usually buy on Vitacost when on sale or Amazon. I usually buy 3 or 4 bottles at a time. Everything bothers my scalp and these brands have not so far.
Another fantastic and informative video. Really appreciate your perspective that just because your an expert in the beauty industry, doesn't make you qualified to interpret science. Please keep up the great content. You have changed my perspective about skincare, and I no longer spend excessive amounts of money on high end products.
Im not gonna lie, the sulfate shampoo lather is so much fun, I wouldnt give it up for a "more gentler" sulfate-free shampoo :P. Also my hair is oily AF, if I mess around too much with sulfate-free shampoos that dont actually cleanse well enough I get dandruff and itches :(
Same here.. sulfat free just does not wash my oily scalp. And i get greasy in 12 hours, while with sulfat it happens in 24 hours. Still i want a solution as it s not sosteinable to qash every day..
Thank you Dr Dray for this informative video. Could you please do more videos on hair care. My hair is catastrophic, I tried like hundreds of products and nothing works; it always dry, frizzy and unmanageable. So, I would love to hear more about hair from you. Thank you xoxo
The irritant effect of SLS is very present, so present that it implies that it is commonly used in Clinical studies. Indeed when cosmetics companies need to test the properties healing lotion or cream, they must first irritate the skin in order to compare the effects positive or negative of their product and therefore use SLS as an irritant. According to the American College of toxicity, SLS would have corrosive properties that induce the corrosion of greases and proteins that make up the skin. Detergents are irritating to the skin, affecting the keratinocytes, cells present in the epidermis and important for its reconstruction. In a study in the Journal of Investigative dermatology in 2008, healthy volunteers were exposed to water (vehicle) and 1% of SLS under occlusive skin test for 24 hours. Then they followed the evolution of the expression of mRNA of keratinocyte differentiation markers and enzymes involved in the degradation of corneodesmosomes. These measurements were carried out by biopsies of the skin during the repair phase (6 hours to 7 days after exposure) . The results are showed an increase in PIE (dehydration of the skin), a decrease in profillagrin (destructuring of the hydrolipidic film of the epidermis) after exposure to SLS. What do you have to answer that "Dr Dray" ?
Omg I had to pop on here and tell you... I’m a nurse in a jail and I was doing a medical intake on an inmate as usual and I happened to notice he had a Totoro tattoo! He had a whole sleeve that was dedicated to the director’s various characters... idk the name of them exactly but one was a little fire thing and the other looked like a grim reaper of sorts? No-Face and Calcifer I believe...
So you’re telling me someone like Kylie Jenner isn’t apart of the scientific community? 😂
@@DrDrayzday so sulfate are not bad? I watched some Indian videos and they said it's bad and they country don't recommend it
I think Dr. Dray's point was that SLS will not kill you. If your sensitive to one shampoo use another one. Love you Dr. Dray 💜
It's wonderful that someone who is MD and PhD shares her knowledge with us! Thank you, Andrea!
She’s a shill. She’s basically telling you the cheap chemical crap you’re buying from multi conglomerates aren’t harmful because there isn’t conclusive proof. If conclusive proof was the standard there would be no scientists.
I have found other channels bad mouthing SLS to the point almost making us throwing away our shampoos that contain SLS. Thank you for educating us.
Everyone should have to take a class like that!
You are so right!

I've been looking to The Beauty Brains blog and podcast (written/hosted by two cosmetic chemists) for years to debunk alarmist marketing claims.
Kristen vs. Mothra The Beauty Brains are starting up again, with one of the original chemists. They are on Instagram.
Oh I need to find out more about this! They sound like something I would be interested in listening to.

I am so sorry to hear this Ms Marleen. Pancreatic CA is the worst (though there is no good CA)
I think it’s more box color that’s easily washed out
You’re so brilliant!! I love rewatching all of your videos because they’re full of so much information! 🥰🙌🙌
Not kidding.
cigarettes are a lot harder to quit than shampoo...hope she is able to stop
That's rude of her to judge 😬 I'm in the hairdressing industry and I shampoo my hair with sulfates every 2-4 days. It's really just whatever works for you! Shampooing less often is ideal for me, because I just don't have time
"Greasy haired coworker". 🤣🤣🤣
It's always the ones with jacked up hair talking the most.
My ex-mother-in-law shamed me by telling me I'd get cancer from scraping a teflon pan all the while she was smoking. Your comment reminded me of that. Some people are so clueless.
The only dermatologist that I trust who explains scientifically ingredients and doesn’t just try to sell you products ❤
Curious about this too!
I probably heard she said silicons are good humectants in one of her videos.
Thank you!

I've never really heard of sls being carcinogenic but I choose not to use it because it massively dries out my skin and hair. This doesn't work well with waist length hair.
Alicia T it makes my scalp psoriasis go ba na nas.

@@wickandde so what do you use girl i need help
this is true, unfortunately...palm oil is pretty pervasive in skin care/personal care products/foods/ etc
:)
At 7:08 - “If you are doing that, then stop”. 🤣
Kristin T i died 😂
You're a girl after my own heart.

Dr. Gray, I’d also really appreciate if you could make a video discussing Denatured Alcohol/Benzyl Alcohol/ SD Alcohol or the so called bad alcohols. I have dry sensitive skin and I can’t tolerate cleanser with SLS. I can use it in shampoo and toothpaste and be fine but putting it on my face seems to be problematic for me.
Alyssa her point is it can cause irritation for some people but sls is not the devil himself like cosmetic world tells.
Same here sissy😁😅
I am the same way. I love it for my hair but can’t use it on my face.
same
i thought sls wasnt prescribed for dry/sensitive skins?????
Thanks for breaking it down for us! I appreciate your dedication!!

Thank you SO much for taking the time to educate us. I have admittedly pursued “clean beauty” because of what I have read that I am now learning is not based on fact! The only thing sls's are not the best for is leave-in products such as hair products and facial toners and creams only because of it's cleansing and potentially stripping agents. What it will do is overly produce sebum production in the hair and skin. By the way love you Dr.Dray, keep on posting amazing educational content!
Learned so much in that short setting. Thanks as always Dr. Dre
Chemist here. Love watching your videos
I’m so glad to be apart of your no nonsense community 😊
I'm so glad to hear this as I enjoy the foaming action of my shampoo with the SLS.
Thanks for another informative video!
i should try PC's shampoo sometime
The only reason why I use a baby shampoo without SLS is simply that I'm trying to grow my hair very long and I find SLS shampoos quiet drying, but once in a while to get rid of product build up I absolutely need to use an SLS Shampoo.
thanks again, so we wont be trapped into buying from a limited amount of shampoos. Your suggested 'alternating' of creamy to non-creamy works well
Long before the current anti-sulfate sentiments appeared, I identified sulfates (particularly SLS) as causing stripping problems with my skin and hair.
Plus if you get keratin treatments you can't use sls, sles or sodium chloride(salt) in shampoo BUT there are many suitable surfactants that work amazingly well to clean =)
proplyene glycol can really be a problem for some for sure, and SLS is pretty drying
SLS dries out my skin. I have very sensitive skin so I use a body wash that is sls free, fragrance free, and essential oil free.
This video is absolutely hysterical and the information wonderfully presented. Thank you!
It's not like I die from it, but it will make the skin irritated and make it produce more oils.
it can be very drying
You're a bad ass in my book. You just helped me understand why my hair is dull after switching to sulfate free shampoo
thanks!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. The natural hair community needs to hear this video.
thanks for watching!
I had never even heard of a cancer connection to SLS.😮
All I really am aware of is sulfates in shampoos can cause hair loss. It was certainly true for me. I used to lose a lot of hair every time it washed. The drain screen was depressing to look at after my shower.
As soon as I switched to non sulfate shampoo, I hardly even have to remove any hair from the drain screen.
Color me happy. 😁
Jay Tee can you please suggest some sls free shampoo
It helps to do a hot oil treatment before applying shampoo. I do coconut oil or argan oil for at least 20 minutes then shampoo. You'll see no hair in the drain
Have you heard about the curly girl method? When following this method you should not use sulfates in shampoo or silicones in the conditioner - you can clearly see the difference in the before and after photos! I haven't tried this method myself, but I plan on doing so. Many shampoos with sulfates are too harsh and it's hard to wash silicones out of the hair without sulfates. So it quickly bacomes an evil circle.
More excellent straightforward information from you, many thanks 👍 #yayforDray 🇪🇸 x
Thank you for that! Opened my eyes
So much information and knowledge that is evidence based. Amazing
Thanks!
Several scientists say that sls kills the hair follicles.. so isn’t that true? Thank you and have an amazing day ✨
I really appreciate your videos so very much!!
Same here. .
I have the same problem and was told by a dermatologist 12 years ago to avoid SLS.
missbhav Flouride?! Please use flouride when brushing your teeth, it protects them and is necessary according to my dentist for healthy teeth.
Dr Dray, could you please tell us about alcohol in cosmetics? It's very confusing to me. Thank you!
Again you have debunked a lot of hype that we have been fed by the cosmetic and personal care ‘police’! Thank you for honestly giving us the truth so we as consumers can make informed decisions for our product purchases that won’t drain our wallets! Thanks again Dr. Dray!😩💸💰
thanks for watching
Which sulfate free shampoo do you use?
@@shaneelarahman484 My favorite have been the brands Deep Steep and Desert Essence both I usually buy on Vitacost when on sale or Amazon. I usually buy 3 or 4 bottles at a time. Everything bothers my scalp and these brands have not so far.
Shaneela Rahman Right now I’m using OGX and L’Oréal
You are truly the best, I needed to hear this, there are so many misleading information that this is very helpful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Another fantastic and informative video. Really appreciate your perspective that just because your an expert in the beauty industry, doesn't make you qualified to interpret science. Please keep up the great content. You have changed my perspective about skincare, and I no longer spend excessive amounts of money on high end products.
:)
It is always refreshing to hear experts talking about products and ingredients rather than becoming a target audience in a marketing campaign.
Im not gonna lie, the sulfate shampoo lather is so much fun, I wouldnt give it up for a "more gentler" sulfate-free shampoo :P. Also my hair is oily AF, if I mess around too much with sulfate-free shampoos that dont actually cleanse well enough I get dandruff and itches :(
:)
Same here.. sulfat free just does not wash my oily scalp.
Nothing has transformed my skin more than using sulfate free face wash tho
Great video, thank you Dr. Drey.
thanks for watching
These measurements were carried out by biopsies of the skin during the repair phase (6 hours to 7 days after exposure)
. The results are
showed an increase in PIE (dehydration of the skin), a decrease in profillagrin
(destructuring of the hydrolipidic film of the epidermis) after exposure to SLS.
No-Face and Calcifer I believe...
i think i will stick to the mug for now...no tattoos for me
Dr Dray 🤣
