I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. Although, I'm more of the angrier, bitter type of person who worked on cruise ships haha. Most employees are more cheerful and have a naturally outgoing personality.

I doubt that any other TH-camr has ever done such a detailed description of the first day on the job as part of a ship's crew. It sounds as challenging as my first day at Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island.
NO WAY!!! I've seen the videos of Marine Corp boot camp and that looks crazy! And that's just the videos they're allowed to post haha. And I'm sure it was even crazier back in the 60s. Signing onto a cruise ship is a picnic compared to what you went through.

Hey man , your channel is great.. I don't know if you have any information about deck stewards.. I'll be working on march ..on the Norwegian Escape as Deck steward and is my first contract. I'm Sound engineer as well but I could not apply for that posicion..so I wanted to know and learn about deck steward.. What it's like or any information you could give mewould be really helpful..

(If you'd rather private message, please do so: harpoon2021@gmail.com) You'll work a lot of hours as a Deck Steward and make less than half the salary. Most likely sharing a cabin with 4 or 5 other mates. Or wait, NCL Escape is a giant ship and it tends to have these closet-sized single cabins (literally just enough for a bed and a tiny sink). However, I hung out with a few guys who were housekeeping and they still had to share (even on the larger ships). Let's talk.
I was thinking about getting a job on a cruise line. The only thing that is potentially stopping me is the roommate situation. I can not have a roommate in the same room. It drives me crazy, I need to sleep and have a couple hours of alone time to recharge my mental batteries as long as I can have a bed, desk, and bathroom, I don't care how small the space is. I would be looking at a mid-management position with my bachelors in business management. Is this high enough for my own room, can I get it written into my contract?
Plenty of jobs on board which will provide you with a single cabin. Degree doesn't matter- lots of crewmembers with bachelor's degrees sharing cabins (mostly throughout the entertainment dept- youth staff, activity staff, show techs, broadcast, etc...). Some managers/supervisors have single cabins with no windows and super tiny rooms. I shared as a Broadcast Tech but had my own cabin with a port hole as a Broadcast Manager. It all comes down to the job. Business Management? Look into some of the finance positions (ie- accounting), or even human resource manager. Search around for some positions like this but don't be fooled by the title; just because you're a supervisor doesn't guarantee you a single cabin. You can't really find this information anywhere but when you interview or once offered the position, ask if it is definitely a single cabin. You can and definitely should demand it in writing. This also includes whether you're allowed room service, hanging out in guest areas off duty and eating in buffet and specialty restaurants, using the guest gym, etc... These are your entitlements determined by your position (which will fall into a stripes category- the higher your stripes, the better your entitlements).

Hey, I got some questions about work on Cruise ships. I will be more than happy, if You can help me out and, give me some knowledge about some things :)
1. SPA department is under Steiner control ( the outside company ). Does it mean I can't be promoted, for let's say some sort of manager in SPA ?
2. Have You heard something about Personal/Fitness trainer job on cruise ships ? What are the hours, payment and privileges ?
3. Is it possible to work directly for NCL as a Fitness trainer, instead of doing it through agency like Steiner ?
4. Is it always better to work directly for NCL than doing it for example through Steiner ? Are there some differences ? Im looking to work as a trainer.
5. Can I find some complete list of departments and jobs on cruise ships, which explains the payments, work hours and privileges ?

1: The spa manager is employed by Steiner. The spa operation is run by Steiner. So if you work for Steiner, you can get promoted to whatever heights exist within Steiner. I don't believe the management in Steiner experience a great uplift in privileges though... maybe their own cabin, but that'd be about it.
2: There are PT's - again, depending on the company and the contract that is either going to be outsourced (ie to Steiner) or in-house
3: Don't know about NCL but most outsource to a 3rd party for PT. If it is outsourced, the whole thing is outsourced. They basically sign over the keys to the gym/spa/??? to the third party company. So if NCL outsource the gym/PT, then no, you cannot work for NCL as a PT.
4: Again - you don't really get a choice who you work for. You work for whoever does that job for that cruise line. There are advantages and disadvantages to each - working for the company you are expected to undertake emergency duties and other responsibilities like that. Working for a third party, you are expected to do your job and that's about it. Privileges are somewhere between 1 stripe and 3 stripe depending on the cruise line, the hotel director, the staff captain and the ships master/captain.
5: No. No. and No. Sort of. You probably won't find pay anywhere. Work hours will be "Less than 300 per month" or "

What do they do if they suddenly have to fire somebody while at sea? Does that ever happen? You should make a video about that. You should do story time type videos where you tell stories about specific things that happened on the ships.
That's a great idea- I'd have to really plan that out (being sure to be careful about breach of contract, refraining from using names as well as not allowing those to figure out which cruise line the story belongs to)... Yes, people are technically fired at sea, however, they're not notified of it immediately. Once you arrive in the next port, security just knocks on your door and tells you to pack your things and that you have to be off the ship in 1 hour. There's also a brig on board in case they need to detain someone immediately.

There's a website called Quora, that I'm active on, where people ask and answer questions about anything and everything you can think of. It depends on why you are being fired. If it is job performance, with my cruise line, you will be up against a tribunal and the Captain decides. If he upholds it, you are off at the next port and you find your own way home. You are also confined to your cabin except to eat. If you are fired for fighting, theft, assault, etc. you are confined to your cabin with a guard. If you are deemed a threat to to harm yourself or others i.e. starting a fire etc. you are put in the brig. You are handed over to immigration and you are subject to the authorities involved especially if drugs are involved.

It was his first contract so he was processed out for the next port. I forget what cruise it was, I think a 10 night Caribbean. He was from the USA so his plane ride wasn't too expensive. Its way more
common for crew to quit while shipboard.
I have tons of questions. Do your constitutional rights end in international waters. Even though you’re an American. Do other people from other countries have less rights on board the ship? What about religion? Is there a Catholic priest on board? Any kind of mass or religious services? What about politics and PC throughout the ships crew. Is there a lot of Liberal/conservative bickering like you find in the US? How do muslims and Jews treat each other on board? Do people from different countries all stick together like clicks? Or do people in the crew love to meet and talk to other people from other countries? How do you communicate with people that speak other languages on the ship? I imagine all those people from different countries. Would be a cultural and religious shock.
What happens if you break your contract? And what do you negotiate in your contract? Is it things like how many roommates you have and your shift? Or is it just your pay and length of tour? Everything you have made videos on is important information. But none of that matters if you are completely miserable. And hate the people you work with. Thanks for all the great videos.
Ok, wow, let's see...:
- Certain constitutional rights end; you have to submit your passport, can't bear arms on board... it's a little different but not terrible- you switch to international maritime law instead of the labor law in the U.S. Same goes for people from other countries.
- No priest on board, however most crew are from the Philippines (who mostly practice Catholicism) and usually have a prayer night. If not, ask crew enrichment on board or get other people who practice the same and start one of your own.
- There is plenty of political bickering but spans across multiple countries now so you get outside input as well.
- Never known of any Muslims working on board. A few Jews but not very religious.
- Mostly cliques. It hit or miss with some groups. Some are welcoming, some aren't. You'll just have to talk to everyone and see and don't take it personally if they brush you off. When first on board, I'd gravitate those from westernized countries (U.S., England, Canada, Australia, etc...) because of language and similar positions on board (usually entertainment). However, after a few weeks, I'd usually end up making friends with some Nicaraguans and just hanging with them throughout my contract.
- U.S. companies (NCL, Royal, Celebrity, etc...) official language on board is English so everyone at least knows a little. But many times off duty they just want to speak their own language. Nicaraguans would speak a Caribbean version of Spanish which was difficult to follow. They'd have a conversation in their own language and then after a few minutes I'd try to bring it back to English. Like I said before, don't take it personally.
- Break your contract: You pay for your own transportation home.
- Each position contains it's own privileges- roommates or single cabin, etc... Your shift is whenever you're needed to work. You're considered on call throughout your contract (ie- no days or specific times off). You might be able to negotiate your pay and length of contract (as those are contracted through the position as well). However, it is possible. Just have to be careful when trying to negotiate for your first job on board because they're looking for people who will fulfill their contracts and not quit half way in. Recruiters know plenty of people will still do this, however, their job is the weed out the candidates who they believe would most likely not stick it out.
- It does get frustrating at times but I'd say it for at least one contract. If you don't like it, try to suck it up for the remainder of the contract so you don't have to pay to leave. At least you'd know and have the experience.

I was told in my skype interview that I'd most likely start out on the Hawaii run, but my onboarding person hasn't answered my question about that. As a US citizen, do we get routed to a US flagged ship first?
Nope. Just seems like they really need someone there right now. I worked for NCL however, NCL America is a different company (it's the only cruise line that is US Flagged). Lots of different rules (more strict in a lot of cases). Just keep track of your hours cause I'm sure you will be entitled to overtime pay. After you're on board for a while, be sure to let us know how it goes and we can compare some of the differences.

@@MichelangeloFlores Legally, you should be entitled to OT after a certain amount of hours because it is required to go through U.S. labor laws. Not sure what kind of contract. For example, just because you're salaried, doesn't mean they can just work you unlimited hours and never pay OT.

Great video series. I'm really enjoying it. I saw that you were in broadcast, that's my expertise as well. What equipment did you use? What were your typical tasks/?
Glad you're enjoying it. We mainly used Sony equipment (which is good) but edited on Macs (which I hate). All ships had both Orbit and Seatel for satellite operation (depending on the Communications Officer- you may or may not ever deal with it). Cisco receivers. Extron patching system (some ships had analog and others had digital). All Sony cameras (I believe the last I used was XDCam), some ships you also controlled the PTZ robotic cameras. Basic live switching (nothing too crazy). And on larger ships, you'll maintain the digital signage and touchscreens. Day to day operations were: taping certain events and live shows, editing and uploading footage to broadcast through a CCTV system, updating slides, ingesting pay per view movies, scheduling free movies for both guests and crew... On larger ships, you'll also troubleshoot tvs in guest and crew cabins. Lots of office work- responding to many on board phone calls, also emails from both on board and shore side. It can be super busy or very chill depending on your on board management (specifically the cruise director and hotel director). You never really know what you're going to run into until you board a particular ship (even within the same company).
Think of a Master Control Operator at a TV studio on land- just with a lot more responsibilities dumped on you.

What is one way for working crew members to cope or deal with doing the same job over and over, month after month, with no days off? I can imagine that after a while life on the ship can all start to feel really same-y. How can you keep the days fresh and interesting months into your contract? Thanks!
Depends what your job is but for the most part, my best advice is to value the time off you do get. A lot choose to nap, but that gets old quick. Once you make some friends on board, don't just stick with the same group all the time. There are so many people from around the world you can interact with who all have different ways of passing time: Going on crew tours while in port, weekly card game nights, movie night, drinking/dancing, cabin parties... And if there's a good crew enrichment on board they'll have special activities for the crew as well: movie night in the theatre, crew parties, bingo night, crew talent shows, crew bands will play in the crew bar every now and then.... Don't be afraid to spend time by yourself either: exploring outside the tourist side while in port, exercising, personal projects (ie- working on your own youtube channel), photography, reading, hobbies... As you can imagine, the list goes on. At times it will be boring and will become "same-y" and depending on your personality, you will be counting days and ready to leave at times; but you'll get used to it. Try your best not to get sucked in to all the drama throughout all groups of crew members on board. Subconsciously, some people do this as a way to have fun and pass time but it honestly causes themselves and others around them to just become miserable.

I'll try to give you some tips of certain ports you're in, like where the best wifi is, cheapest drinks, etc... if I can remember them haha. I know of one where you can get free food and wifi, with free trips to the mall and Walmart. Believe me, a trip to Walmart sounds boring now, but it will be a life-saver while on a ship for several months.
What is it like for couples with kids working on a cruise ship. I've heard the ships have on board schools and such for parents signing on with school aged kids. Is this true? Is this even a career path someone with children should consider?
It is not true
Nope, no school on board for worker's kids. Many people who work on board (mothers & fathers) have kids back home in their countries. However, it is a way of life for them; especially from the Philippines . I don't have any kids but as someone from the US, I couldn't imagine being away from my children for so long. You'll miss all their firsts and everyone else but you is raising them.
I could never leave my kids for that long. I homeschool now but, obviously, I couldn't leave them unattended while I worked and I'm sure the cruise line wouldn't allow them to come anyway. I just thought it could be a unique life experience.

Can you maybe tell, or do you have an idea what happens to a luggage if someone can't do their unpacking before that evening tingy?
Not sure I understand the question completely but I'll try to answer the best I can: Your luggage will stay in that area off I-95 until you pick it up. Even if it is for several hours. Eventually you will be able to break away to at least pick it up and put it in your cabin. If you don't have time to unpack that first day, don't worry about it- a lot of people don't get fully unpacked until at least day 3 or 4.

You have a few different levels of security: Staff Captain > Secuirty Officer > Security Deputy > Security Guards. The guards make roughly $1300 - $1500 USD/mo and share around 2-3 to a cabin.

If from the US: only way is to apply directly on their website for open positions only.
From outside of US: Your country should have agencies who deal directly with the cruise line and you'll go through them (they take care of medical, visas, etc...). However, there are a lot of scams out there, if one tries to get you to pay them fees for their services; it's not legit. The cruise lines pay real recruitment agencies to employ their non-US employees.

Pro: Because the department is so large, you'll barely have to pull All Day Duty because the rotation would take a while to get back to you.

Con: Possibility of running into kids/parents while trying to enjoy your time off in port
Con: Unreasonable parents try to get you fired if they see you "partying too hard" while off duty in port (bars, nightclubs, etc...)---- They want you to be "family friendly" all the time even though you're an adult.

What is starting salary of waiter on cruise ship
Assistant waiters are about $700 - $900 and waiter is about $800 - $1100. These are base pays and don't include tips. That number is wider based on service, quality of dining experience and food, and how each cruise line decides to distribute tips (ie- do they add auto-gratuity to guests, etc...)

Like I said, it's hard to say how much you'll make in tips (don't think there is a minimum). Good income in Food and Beverage Department?- Food and Beverage Director haha. I believe either a waiter or bartender would be about even regarding entry level pay. Both have good growth opportunities: Waiter- Head Waiter- Matrie'd- Restaurant Manager- Food and Beverage Director … OR Bartender- Bar Manager- Food and Beverage Director. Food and Beverage Director is also a decent stepping stone into Hotel Director as they tend to fill in on last minute changes in staffing.
