The racial clash of 13th May 1969 continues to be known as dark time in our nation's past.
But confusion and mystery continues to surround the events that transpired on that day.
Three women of different backgrounds go down memory lane and share the thoughts, concerns and emotions they experienced on that unforgettable day.
Mrs Kanthamani Ramasamy was in Alor Setar, Kedah when the riots happened. Her two sons were studying in Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. As a full-time mother of ten children, her experience is based on the information she heard from her husband and children.
Mrs Lily Chinniah is a former teacher and actress who appeared in movies such as Esok Masih Ada directed by Jin Shamsuddin. She was seven months pregnant and living in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur with her three children when the racial clash occurred.
Dr Rohana Ariffin was the acting president of Parti Rakyat Malaysia at the time this video was made. She was a student in Universiti Malaya back in 1969. She moved from her room in Petaling Jaya to live in Kampung Baru with her family prior to the riots for fear of her own safety.
These three grandmothers also share their views on whether Malaysia has achieved greater unity.

Dont blame anyone. Just support what u believe and be quiet bout it. I never wished for 13th May happens again. I do believe we all hate it so much. Lets be wise everyone. Just vote what u want. Dont talk bout race anymore. We all sharing the same blood color. Also i do believe we all want to have a peaceful country to live. So stop making riots. Stop contributing any damage to our country. Lets be happy. :)

May 13 was painful for me. But the way Malaysia resolving the issue is just totally wrong..May 13 did not disappear it just masked. A strongn nation will remind the citizens that May 13 must not happen again but Malaysia will remind the citizens that it may happen again.

I had beautiful friends in Muar in the 70s. Mostly Malays. Then a few years later, when I was in campus I had close friends of ALL races. My gf was Siwar Kaur - a Chinese Punjabi girl. Those were the good days - even after May 13. We got along so well. What happened?? It’s so different today. It’s sad.

Stupid & narrow-minded people are racists. Allah created us all. Violent is always not the solution. All citizens should be taught to love one another and live harmoniously since all races forced and worked together for our independence. It was a big mistake this happened but at the same time, we should learn from this bad incident as an eye-opener for the new generation to go forward to work and live together and look forward to a better Malaysia.

Whenever my parents tell stories about a time when Malaysia wasn't saturated with the racism that we experience today, I find it hard to imagine. In fact, more often than not, I wonder if these are just distorted memories. Racial harmony? Coexisting races? Those are such foreign concepts. Oh, M'kini, the volume of the background music needs to be balanced out; it gets too loud sometimes and drowns out the voices.

I don't really care about races now, but take a note to the "government", I do not believe that our economic policy is working well. I still see poor Malays and Chinese and Indians living a hard life, while the already rich and "well connected" individuals gets richer. Nobody is born to be a laborer or a slave to others and yet daily, some will be having RM2 meals and some will be dining in fine restaurants. I suppose this is a difficult question all over the world, the equality of humanity.

What's so difficult with our mentalities? Stay in a Malay country, definitely the currency is Ringgit with a Malay Agong, stay in Thailand the currency is Baht with the Thai King, stay in China, the currency is Renminbi with the Chairman Mao and so on.. We are different in no ways but it is the same unit of currency that keeps us alive. On that fateful day in Singapore, i was assigned to the morgue for the insensible blood from KL flowed right down to Singapore. As long as i am alive, i definitely won't allow such tragedy to happen again. Any politician plays on racial issue must be the biggest 'hantu'(Malay word for 'devil').

If we can do an independent and unbiased detail study on this , we can prevent this from happening in future . Just treating this as taboo will not help us prevent future incidents . Those who learn in detail from this incident, can take necessary counter measures to prevent this from happening again . Tests to Nations will come in form of economic crisis or the pandemic .

My dad used to say during the days, when he goes market. The chinese seller will say 'u takde duit, u beli barang kedai lain'. that was how arrogant the chinese were. I think this was brought by themselves. No one to blame. Still happening but more subtle. Najib has formulated steps to ensure rich business ppl who under declare tax to pay gst, even now targeting parents who send children to international school but declare low income in tax . In the long run the government can collect money leaked and subsidize price of goods, if executed properly. This fenomena is happening in every country with high number of chinese residents. Dont think this is an isolated case.

I believe that Malaysia is still pretty much divided due to our upbringing. No matter how hard the political parties try to paint a beautiful picture of Malaysia's "unity". To be completely united would be the day that we see each other as equals but the fact is that Malays prefer Malays, Chinese prefer Chinese etc. As a Chinese I have been brought up being told that I need to work harder to get scholarship but even that, nothing is guaranteed like in my case. Quite disappointed but life goes on

Don't be so indoctrinated by what they tell you. The DAP and the Chinese aren't the only ones to blame, the Malay politicians were also catalysing the racial tensions. If you did your research and not only just blindly accepted what was going on, you would've known that Harun Idris and Tun Abdul Razak wanted to force Rahman to step down and needed this event to do so. And also, I find it funny that you're blaming the Chinese when their death tolls were the highest... tortured, mutilated, severed heads in fridges... you can read all the accounts. Of course, they were at fault for being unreasonable but it really was the Malay politicans which pushed everything over the edge.

A book filled with inaccurate and fabricated half truths.
I do not need to research, I lived through it. We have forgiven the DAP and the chinese for doing that. But dont ever try to shift the blame. Admit your fault and move on. We have foriven, but will never forget

No... in fact I read interviews with Tunku Abdul Rahman, accounts from various people who have lived through it, etc. etc. Right... so you're blaming the entire Chinese community for their own deaths? You must remember that the Chinese weren't killed in an act of self-defense, it was pure unadulterated bloody murder. Seeing as the Chinese suffered the most from it, why do you need to forgive them? They weren't the ones who conducted a significant number of the killings.
Yeah, so Malays were completely innocent for going on a massacre. It wasn't even remotely their fault that hundreds of Chinese were brutally tortured, decapitated... no, no. The Chinese were completely at fault for their own deaths (even though many of them weren't politically involved).
Sure the DAP was extremely unreasonable on the events preceding May 13th, but placing all the blame on them solely? Really?

You Zhen Ang You said it yourself - EXTREMELY unreasonable . You however missed out on them being rude, obnoxious, oblivious, arrogant, oppressive, racist, discriminative and most importantly EXTREMELY Provocative.
You provoke a situation but them act clueless when you get a reaction.
This is the problem of having un-assimilated immigrants living in parallel worlds of their own who cannot understand the cultural sensitivities of the local majority.

Oh and btw, sorry if I sound angered or annoyed in the comments (I don't mean it any way). I'm doing affirmative action policies for my project and would like to get perspectives from as many people as possible.

you know how a country can achieve unity? make the national language the most known language and that would be Bahasa Malaysia, Make the state religion? None, no state religions all religious practice is free and to be tolerated , make no advantages laws or reforms to target one race but instead to benefit as much people as possible. have religious organisations and monuments built and sustained with donations and funds raised by themselves and not with the state's money which can be used to decrease poverty and develop our country. Lastly educate children in school to understand that we are not malay chinese or indian, that's just our roots and skin colour but our current identity is : a Malaysian.
