- Here is some more Java sugar mill footage for Indonesian (and other) fans.
This is pre-digital footage from Java which I converted to digital on mini DV tapes in 1999. Most of the footage dates from the early 1990s although it may have been shot as late at 1998 before I go my first digital camera. Technology has moved on again and I had to use my old Sony digital video camcorder along with my old Apple desktop and a firewire cable to capture this footage to disk. This just goes to show how important it is to copy material on older formats to the latest version before you lose the ability to do so.
I have not as far as I know used this footage in the past on any Java DVDs. Given the recent announcement about more sugar mill closures (for 2017) to add to the loss of filed work, mills and steam locos between the 2014 and 2015 season, this is all unrepeatable material as much as 25 years old. I am making it available with few edits and with just basic titles to give the names of the mills.

My own reports don’t go back far enough to cover this footage but I am happy to try to answer questions if you have them. Either ask a question on TH-cam or email john@rabylee.uk and let me know the name of the video and the point in the playback (if relevant) you want to ask about.
I don’t initially intend to make specific comment about these individual videos but if there are interesting questions and replies I will make sure that they posted with the relevant videos.
To give you a taste of what is to come, mills featured include Pakis Baru, Trangkil, Gondang Baru, Tasikmadu, Kebonagung, Pagottan, Merican, Pesantren, Semboro, Wringinanom, Olean and in all cases with real working steam and in most cases with steam-hauled field trains.

When I was teenager in early 1990s, I used to travel between Surabaya and Yogyakarta quite often and must have passed through Gondang Baru. How I could I missed this anyway? Back then I didn't realize if there was a narrow gauge train network in Klaten

Great to see the Corliss engine at work at Gondang Baru, I never recorded this and, of course, it's been in the museum area fro several years now.
This valve gear was always my favourite on stationary engines. I have a feeling I saw it on some other engines but can't remember where.
The only other mill with a Corliss engine was Krebet and it finished after the 2003 season. There were plenty of these in Cuba of course.
Now Mr Corliss make instant milk (SGM), you can find him on jogja-solo road between gondang baru and prambanan temple.

Bisa ke PG. Jatiroto,PG. Semboro,PG. Prajekan,PG. Olean dan PG. Kedawung semua nya ada di daerah Jawa timur,dan semuanya juga masih sering ke kebun untuk menjemput gerbong getrok kosong menuju pabrik,untuk yg di prajekan hanya dari PG ke Tangki penyimpanan Molase saja yg jaraknya lumayan jauh sisanya beraktivitas di sekitar pabrik untuk angkutan tebu nya.

Masalah utamanya di Jawa sudah terlalu penuh perumahan dan lebih memilih menanam padi dibandingkan tebu di daerah saya juga sudah tutup PG
SEMUA SUDAH TUTUP, AKU DULU ANAK KARYAWAN (TEKNIK) PABRIK GULA KALIBAGOR & SUMBERHARJO.

What is the name of the village with the narrow "streets" ??
I can't give a definitive answer but look south of the mill, the other side of the mainline railway and possibly look a bit east. Google Maps or Earth should help.
Name of this village from Gondang baru sugarmill is" plawikan" &"kraguman", jogonalan district
This south line we can go to Gantiwarno district,and going to the east line is "WEDI" district

I'd love to but I don't think I have any more. The mill didn't last long after that visit and there was much more action at nearby Gondang Baru.
