That line made me raise an eyebrow. The game is literally the second game in the series, and builds up on every thing Super Mario Kart established. How can it possible be in the lower points and un-evolved?

Literally stopped the video less than 30 seconds in because I've NEVER heard anyone say anything bad about Mario 64. Literally ever. I've heard people dislike MKW, MK8, the handheld gamesetc. But the 3 MK games I've never heard a single bad thing about was MK64, MKDD and MKDS

Maybe I'm alone with this, but I really like the simplicity of Mario Kart 64 and games like Super Smash Bros. on N64. The most recent entries have become progressively more and more complex and I think less is more.

@@alexojideagu It was definitely not seen as disappointing to kids at the time who got to play it. Maybe to critics? More likely to people looking back at it in retrospect. Of course nothing back then compared to Golden Eye when it came to multiplayer fun, not even Diddy Kong, heck I didn't know anyone who even had Diddy Kong back then.
@@songcramp66 I was around 13 when it got released and I was pretty disappointed. I thought the tracks were too long and boring. Almost unbearable on the lower CC's.

Mario Kart 64 is not one of the "lower points" in the series. It still holds up surprisingly well, in my opinion, even without a trick system or drift boosting.
Who says Mario Kart 64 is the lowest point? Sure its rough sometimes, but I didn't even grow up with it, just first got it on WiiU and loved it.

@@alexojideagu Diddy Kong racing had more content sure and different vehicles but it was soon forgotten while Mario Kart 64 will always be a cult classic. Once you get into the drifting and slide boost the skill ceiling goes way up which makes it so fun.

It's only a cult classic because it sold better and is the first 3D Mario Kart. As a game, Mario Kart 64 is lacking. Why should I get good at drifting when the terrible rubber band AI renders it moot? And don't get me started on the poorly programmed red shells.

This game was a monumental leap from Super Mario Kart. Possibly the biggest leap between 'Karts of them all. It created a bunch of new conventions and refinements that are still present in MK8. WTH?
Agreed, I think the main issue is it's seen as cool to hate and deride the N64 now. Mario Kart 64 is night and day, a vastly superior game to Super Mario Kart.
Super Mario Kart is not exactly spectecular to begin with, so a big step up from there is relative.
90s tube TVs have a softening effect on pixels, much like modern anti-aliasing. The HD mod is *literally* how I remember seeing this game for the first time in a Blockbuster Video.

Hey. When MK64 came out, it was sold out all over the US. I couldn't get it. Then I went on a trip to Puerto Rico, where I was teaching computers and one of my students heard I was looking for it, called all over the island and found a single copy in a Wal Mart sixty miles away in Fajardo. Then he MADE them hold that one for me, even thought it was against their policy. I'm eternally grateful. For me, MK64 is the best game ever created for any console. I had countless hours of fun with that. Thank you for covering this. All good wishes.

@@Supersonicspyro it’s my favorite, mechanics are pretty good but the game is so low in content it feels it was made quickly only to throw a Mario kart in 3DS, sure a low point but i feel 64 is the worst of all bcs the gameplay is crap and graphics are extremely bad, even for n64 standards.

The Mario Kart 64 decompilation is on the way, thus an unofficial non-emulated PC version of this game may be on its way. Having a native port of this game could potentially enable fully 3D models for all the characters instead of pre-rendered 2D sprites as of now. The Mario Kart HD team could then potentially just port over their HD 3D character models to this unofficial port instead of just using their HD 2D sprites made from them.

it's pretty much CTGP for nintendo 64, it adds new tracks, and a ton of options

64 and Super Circuit are my two favorites, hands down. The nostalgia is something that you just cannot buy with the newest titles.
I have always loved Mario Kart 64 and I always will. Mario Kart 64 is one of the first games I ever owned. Some of my earliest memories are of that game. I will always remember Rainbow Road, Banshee Boardwalk, Choco Mountain, Royal Raceway (the one with Peach's castle from SM64), Toad's Turnpike, etc...
Paused the video 20 seconds in and checked the comments to see if anyone else thought the same as I did…and wasn’t disappointed
MK64 will always be the best title of the franchise, although MKWii and MKDD were pretty good too.

I don't know if _all_ of the pre-rendered models were entirely redone by the Mario Kart 64 HD team since Mario and Luigi look like they were taken from the Render96 project.
It's also possible that the MK64 HD team used some textures from the gigaleak.

Aw bro I got my 64 with SM64 in October of 97 and Mario Kart 64 for Christmas that year. And that was one of the greatest games of my life, I played that game for years and years and would even compete for primordial world records way back in like 2001. Not that I was ever even close but on one of the old sites I did get 72nd in the world at the time on Sherbet Land lmao since that stage had no major skips yet and all you really needed to do was race fast and jump as many corners as possible lmao. MK64 is one of the true highlights of my earlier life, love that game, thanks for the report on these mods, they look incredible to me as an old time original fan

No Koopa Troopa, Birdo, Dry Bones, Shy Guy, Daisy, Diddy Kong, Conker, and Spyro. *0/10* …Jokes aside, I love the idea of expanding the rosters and features of older games. Smash 64 Remix and especially Project M EX Remix as some of my favorite modded Nintendo games all time for that reason alone. The classic styled Sonic games are also always a treat, and I don’t even need to get into Doom because you *know* those games are modded like crazy. Really the only thing I’m waiting for now is for the decompilations and PC ports of Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day come to light sooner rather than later since seeing mod projects like what they do for Super Mario 64 alone is legendary in of itself.
I destroy my kids on MK64. They get so mad and call me a boomers. Good times.

I have never heard an opening statement fumble that hard. It’s like a football player with oil in their hands, slipping on a banana peel, all while dashing in the opposite direction of the ball. I think it becomes increasingly annoying for someone to try and fail at history lessons when we have channels that actually try to get their facts straight. Whether 64 has aged well is up for debate, but it was a landmark title that had a huge positive influence on the whole series, pretty much created the modern party racer, and its track selection has it remembered as a classic even today.

It's amazing but I wonder how much work it would have been to keep Bowser's and Toad's properly-sized tires (they were wider than the other karts' tires) and DK's and Peach's color-matched rims in the final product (DK had yellow and brown, Peach's were pink).

Mario Kart and Xtreme G share similar weapon mechanics! Wish they used the boost torch from XG! Haha instead of the super mushroom but so cool that the feather was added and also it’s really cool that it seems the CPU can now fire shells something it can’t do on the standard version
