    This style of bed with drawers on one side was referred to as a 'Captain's Bed' in older catalogs. If you put ply on the bottom of the boxes it will keep more dust out, then you can also make the blind (no drawer) boxes with hinged lids so you then have somewhere to put all the out-of-season bedding without filling all your cupboards, just slide the mattress over for access . For drawer pulls I would use recessed pulls such as 'campaign chest' drawer pulls - but then again I tend to kick or walk into anything that sticks out.

    I like the fact that it's modular; not everyone has a truck. If I were to build one, I'd probably have shallower drawers. Thanks for sharing : )

      No. You need big drawers to get the bed off of the floor.

    I've been planning on building a new queen sized bed for a while. Watching all the you tube videos builds. So far I've liked yours the best I like that it can be easily broken down and moved. I have a very small bedroom this would be going in to so having it modular would make it easy to build in the shop and assemble in the room. Thanks so much.
    Darwin looks really comfortable on that bed.

    Great idea, we made a similar bed with drawers on both sides, out of four moduals, held together with rails around top three edges. We made it to match wall hanging systems, popular back in the 1960"s that finished the drawer inserts with reed weaving with matching hear board. Great project, really brought back memories.

    Such a marvelous idea ! Since I like to sleep on an elevated bed, 1800's like where you need a step stool to get up there, I would opt for some hanging with a set of drawers like my antique armoire, they are so cool ! I just might try to make one! Thank you !

    Nice and simple design, I like the small baskets at the foot end! :-)
    The only thing I would change would be to raise it up an inch or two on a sub-frame to give the effect of it floating, that would look good I think.

    I like the modular concept for this application. If I had it to do over again I might go this route for my bed. I felt following the idea of two sides with drawers was better at the time but this is so much more versatile.

    Modular is the way to go. The concept is awesome. I'd put the bed in the middle of the room and than also drawers* on the other side. *Probably not drawers put containers on wheels/casters. Maybe I'd make the whole construction out of solid wood since
    plywood is terribly expensive in my country. Thanks for sharing the build.

  • @staceysearle1954

    I would maybe move drawers toward end of bed so there would be room for a nightstand by the headboard. It looks great with the open area at the foot though.

  • @MFunkibut
    @MFunkibut 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the open end is really inspired. I can see a twin version of this in a kid's room with the end filled with Tonka trucks or Lego bins or as a stuffed animal hutch. Might use paint in a kids room but that's obv. a personal design choice

  • @ToadsTho
    @ToadsTho 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't like this build at first, but seeing it come together and the headboard really kicked it up.
    The only negative I have is that I don't like that wasted half, I saw a comment that said to make that area into a chest, and I tend to agree. No wasted space!

    You did a super nice job. I also wanted to build something similar to this. After thinking it through, I would make the following changes:
    1. The drawers open too close to the ground. I like what you did to the rounded corner to avoid a knee bender. The drawer that low may be a hazard to your toes. Ouch.
    2. I would also reduce the height of the drawer. I think a lower bed might be more comfy. But that's matter of taste.
    3. I am not sure that first drawer next to the headboard would be very useful. Since people normally put a nightstand there which may hinder the opening of that first drawer.
    I love the modular natures of this build. Super Cool.

  • @mikaelkorpela

    Great! I'm just planning to build a bed and this video gave some really nice ideas (modular! yay!).
    I would be a bit worried not leaving any holes under the mattress for it to "breath" properly; they warned about it in the mattress store when we told our plans to just put the mattress on the floor. Basically they instructed us not to cover the bed for a good couple hours in the morning so that it would dry properly from any humidity (humans sweat sometimes in sleep it turns out).
    After a year I build a simple rack using some 4x4 and slatted bed base, lifting the mattress just a little bit up from the floor.
    I don't know if that's a real issue, but I'd keep checking the mattress especially during the winter with your setup.
    Keep up the good work!

    I love this - the concept of a wood built modular bed base is appealing - we have divan beds but they are cheap and poorly made. usually covered in hideous fabric, I currently have one of those hydraulic arm storage beds so I definitely would need a lot of storage space - love the build and your dog is adorable :)

      four boxes with tops and bottoms. four drawers with a bottom and two short sides and two long sides. Sandwich between plywood sheets. Put fronts on the drawers. Add drawers slides and pull handles. I can't help with the headboard. Easy peasey. A drawer jig would help from Rockler or Kreg. A pocket hole kit, pin nailer would be nice, table saw or circular saw, miter saw maybe, jointer, planer, corner clamps. Just keep buying so the woodworking store has a Merry Christmas. It is an endless process.

  • @thomasehesterjr

    I love this build. This only thing I'd change is the hardware on the drawers I think I would hurt my leg walking by. But I'm clumsy lol. Again great build.

  • @thetlhobbies994
    @thetlhobbies994 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool design. If I do this, I would build the drawers in both sides of the bed with the open end. I would make the sides of the bed a little higher so that the mattress would submerged into the bed frame. And finally, I would add some LED lights running around the bed frame, but of course, you would make a top cover to hide those lights. I think adding LED lights would make this bed frame look more modern.

    Nice build. I'd change the upper surface to over hang a little (1"-1-1/2") so heels don't bang against the pulls. I'd maybe use the inner boxes for "hide-away" storage. Like a small safe or seasonal. Vented of course. Overall a good build that's Darwin approved.

    Very well done, my lady.😊👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Only thing I’d do different would be to enclose the foot section with doors, at least . Having it open like that would be just a place for dust to gather. The way dust seems to gather under beds for some reason.😂

      I agree, I keep watching modular bed videos for inspiration, with the idea to combine all the best parts of each video. It is also easier as a viewer to spot mistakes made that the maker may not have thought of in the moment.
      In addition to the frame, I would also make some kind of wooden "cage" between the bed and the mattress that allows for air flow under the mattress because we have a really moist apartment, it would also act as a way of binding the modules together.

    • @shelbystiner6545

    My thought was to have drawers that are somewhat shallower, 3 modules at the foot and have the center one be pull-out to get at the space under the bed. This would make a good place to store things like my large tent and some collapsible chairs. Basically things that are long and not needed too often. It also might be possible to make a long, trundle style drawer on wheels to make it easy to get at things stored in this proposed space. In my case, the configuration of my room means the side of my bed is against the wall and the head and foot are both exposed, so I could have an underbed access panel in the head too. Obviously that last aspect would be very specific to this room, where there's doors in awkward places. If I moved, I probably wouldn't have access from the headboard side of the bed.

    Nice Design! Great job!
    For my own design
    1) I would double bed base high so each sides would receive 6 drawers or something else (maybe a rack for shirts); "each sides", because as you said if needed to remove the bed, modular boxes would be easy to transport in a car... If you move out or sell your bed base to someone else, maybe it could be assembled symmetrically against a wall, with some room each sides, so it would be of benefit to get drawers each sides at conception...
    2) I would check mattress exact dimensions before start the project or even make the bed base larger in order embed, like framed by bed base (NB: your mattress seems a bit longer vs bed base lenght...) ;-)

    Great video. I made a headboard a few years ago and found the hardest part was attaching it to a standard metal bed frame. Also, this is a great solution for upstairs bedrooms. Once I helped someone move a Queen size bed into her apartment only to find the box spring would not fit up the stairs. We ended up actually taking the frame of the box spring apart, folding it up like a taco and re-attaching it in place.
