  • Is this a JOKE Metallica? In this video I review the brand new Metallica track 72 Seasons. It's the title track from their upcoming new album 72 Seasons. The question is, can Metallica redefine themselves to a new generation, or will they fall into an endless cycle of rehashing the past. Sad but True, the tik tok generation is here. They don't have the patience to sit through long songs that don't get straight to the point. I'll dissect the lyrics, song structure, music theory, guitar solo problems and more! I mean, what's Dave Mustaine gonna think about this?
Break through your limitations and boundaries with music theory and guitar technique below. Persistence and determination will only get you so far without a plan. I learned this the hard way. I got kicked out of my first band and failed countless times. I finally went to music school for 5 years to get my act together. That's where I learned to practice and develop my musicianship. My life changed forever and suddenly I could solo over chords and rip killer licks while jamming with others. Don't let another day go by without a plan to reach your goals with my full course below!

All the time you just want to come across as super cool, but your arrogance and hubris destroys real coolness.
The 90s are over, maybe you should consider an update for yourself.

Great review. As a gen x guy, I can appreciate old school and new schools. But I am still not loving this song after hearing twice now.
As far as the Megadeth/ Metallica comparison goes, I believe The Sick The Dying And The Dead knocks Papa Het’s new stuff outta the water. Dave succeeded in new Megadeth offering a throw back. James is trying on this album, but he’s trying to out duel Dave it feels like to me.
That being said I don’t think new Metallica is trash .. I just don’t love it, and won’t spend money on the album. 😐

Im pretty sure the lyrics are talking about his 72 seasons (first 18 years) and you can kind of see it in the words like dogmatic, etc talking about how he was steered and "educated' by his parents a certain way and how its been constant trauma.

The "split in two" line also means, imo, that till the first 18 years, you're mostly told what to do, when you have limited authority over life. And from there's your life is split in two, the second part where you have to figure stuff out for yourself.

James wrote the lyrics about himself and going through the things over the first 18 years of his life that haunted him for most of his life. His mom dying of cancer, his abusive father, and the messed up cult religion Christian science that James and his family were raised on. This album is a lyrical and musical release that James has needed for awhile. I love this song, i love the deep heavy groove of the pre-chorus and the vocals of James, plus the 80's essence and drive of this song.

This is a very dangerous attitude. Just because people have power and heritage doesn't mean they don't make mistakes or poor decisions. And obviously this video isn't meant in the sense that Shred would like to write the next album instead of them. Many artistically decisions come down to preference and you don't have to agree with everything Shred says in the video, at least I don't. But it's still fair criticism and I don't care if he talks about my neighbour's album or a rock legend's album, it has the same value to me.

Definitely is my favorite of the four songs revealed from the album. I agree about the lyrics though, they're the weakest link for me. However, I like that harmonized part of Kirk's Solo when it slows down towards the end. I like the heaviness of the pre-chorus, I like the main riff. I like the chorus riff and even that bridge later in the song. For a song around 8 minutes or so, it didn't feel like it dragged on for that long. (Unlike "If Darkness had a Son" which had less dynamics) Jame's Voice sounds good on the track, Lar's Drumming is as good as it can be expected to be, as he's no Dave Lombardo. The whole thing felt like a perfect blend of old and new Metallica. Expecting them to replicate anything from Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets would just be an absurd expectation to have. Overall, I think the track is good, all things considered. After Load, Reload, St. Anger, and to a lesser extent, Death Magnetic, it's clear they've come a long way in terms of forging a sound that's acceptable to all their fans, both old and new alike. 8/10 for me.

    • @hinjurock70
      @hinjurock70 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Really? To me it's the worst of the four - the riffs are pretty generic, the solo is simplistic, the vocals don't have much intensity or passion and aren't very memorable (except for the chorus which is kind of annoying), and the arrangement is clunky. The drumming is the best part.

I find that the songs of this new metallica contain some really cool idea, but also there are... questionable choices, and most of all they tend to drag too much intros and many other passages (a sort of "Iron Maiden syndrome"). The final result is "not bad at all, but could have been better".
It's a great album to have as a background in a rock pub, you vaguely listen to it while drinking beer and chat with friends, and every once in a while you focus on a cool passage, then you resume your chatting. I first heard Metallica when I was in High School, must have been somewhere around 1987 or so because ...and Justice... had not been released, yet. This song - the only one I have heard off the new album so far - makes me think of what it would sound like if "Kill 'em All" era Metallica had written "Frayed Ends of Sanity" - and I love it. I love the length of the song, the almost stream of consciousness lyrics, the musical breaks between lyrics, the long intro - all of it. IMO this is old school Metallica updated for a new era. When I heard this for the first time on Sirius/XM and they were talking about a new song from Metallica I thought, "Just please don't let it suck," because they have had some not so good songs over the last, several years. I am glad to say that, although for my tastes I wish it weren't produced to the point of being quite so 'slick', it certainly does not suck.

    My critiques:
    -Song kinda overstays its welcome.
-Some pretty cool riffs and ideas that I think would belong to different songs.
-Song probably should've ended after the solo/harmony bit (the build up at the end felt like it was going to end).
-Sounds too similar to anything on Hardwired. If you listen to Death Magnetic and Hardwired, you can definitely hear a difference in terms of theme, riff writing, etc.
-Solo wasn't really anything new and it was kinda meh. I don't feel like it was anything note worthy and was just a typical pentatonic/blues-y type of solo.
    Positives:
-One of the great things about this song was the riff writing, it really shows that Metallica can really write some kickass riffs.
-James still sounds pretty great even when he's getting up there in age.
-Production was great (both the song and the music video). It wasn't a sore to both listen to and watch.
-Rob sounds pretty good in this song, I'll have to agree that I like the tremolo note that goes on throughout the song.
-I do like the chorus (it just sounds badass).
-By far my favorite part of the song was the Harmony after the solo. I always love some Metallica harmonies after solos.

You are right when you say that it's an old school song, but I like that and I guess most of the fanbase will welcome that as well. When you analyze the whole tune intellectually you can get the impression that they are consciously trying to replicate the past, but for me personally that is way better than the countless boring and spineless songs they released on the last Albums.

Just finished listening to 72 Seasons full album. It's not as great as I hoped but not terrible either. Some songs teeter on boring as others leave more of a unique flair. Kirk's solos are for the most part pretty solid. Some of my favorite songs remain those that got airplay such as: If Darkness Had a Son, Lux Æterna, and Screaming Suicide. That being said you get some pretty solid tracks with You Must Burn!, Crown of Barbed Wire (which has almost a Sad But True vibe), Too Far Gone? and Room of Mirrors. Inamorats is over eleven minutes long but honestly speaking it didn't feel that long, at least not to me. So, when I speak of this album being boring I guess I was hoping it'd be more experimental like Lux Æterna or faster like If Darkness Had a Son. Although it's not gonna win any awards from me or even make my best metal albums of the year list, it is a decent album that the diehard fans are gonna truly enjoy. For any metal fan I would recommend you check it out. I'm gonna give it a few more listens before making a final judgment as Lux Æterna took a few listens to truly appreciate.

definitely drags a lot. They could cut that pre chorus thing and shorten the long exposition and it would be a banger!

That's about the only way to really insult Metallica.
But it's true. They didn't write any really bad song throughout their career.
Sadly, Metallica normally (means until 2000) wasn't about 'pretty good' songs.
They were about awesome songs at least. They wrote a handful of that since Jason left.
Why people are interested in Metallica are the killer tracks.
There is nothing near a killer track to be heard so far.
So, I agree. This is pretty good.
But not the sphere where Metallica should be dealing.
Lars once was afraid Metallica could become a parody.
      It's not that far.
      Not yet.

Your right on dude. They are trying to replicate the 80's for people like myself who are the 50-60 age group. I'm bored of the same guitar tones that I'm hearing once again on this album and the previous 2 albums. What the heck ever happened to a new album , a new guitar tone....Anymore the older classic bands like Metallica and Maiden continue with the same guitar tones album after album.
In the early years with both theses bands the guitar sound and effects were different album to album.

Ive loved this band to death for 14 years now. Posters and flags still cover my bed room walls, but... This ain't it. This song js at least 2.30m longer than it should, Kirk is completely shitting the bed in the studio for more than a decade now, Lars only knows snare fiils. Its so sad to see a band that got so far, created 5 albums that are legendary in 10 years to get to this. The Load's were different, but they were clearly natural to them. St Anger had horrible production, but you could feel there was some substance in it. Since Hardwired, with the exception of Atlas Rise, Dream no More and Halo on Fire, this is band that is on auto pilot. There's nothing here that makes you wanna repeat this shit. This song live will be the biggest boredom ever experienced. They are 60, slow down then. This is generic metal, so forced. The same variations over and over....

Songs about the fear of approaching adulthood . 72 seasons is first 18 years . Talks about running from the “ shadow “ and all this stuff about being chased by “ approaching manhood “ and all the atrocities that follow all of us in different ways . different tragedies . The “ choking on the stage fright “ is about being scared to stand up and switch to adult hood and all it’s responsibilities . I love it

Reason it’s probably on the long side is because it’s the title track. Setting the mood and theme for the rest of the album. Metallica is 42 years old and still playing metal at thrash speeds. I consider it a victory!! 🤘

For someone who was taught by the legendary Satch, Kirk seems to have decided that playing melodically is cliche at this point.
Recently, Metallica seems to have decided that the more ideas for riffs they have in a song the better. I agree that the riff need to be tightened up as well and this is from a longtime fan who loves AJFA.

  • @blinkersgaming
    @blinkersgaming ปีที่แล้ว

Definitely not my favorite so far, but I'm hoping it'll grow on me. Now I did hear Hatfield say somewhere that 72 seasons is the time it takes from birth, to the age 18. And this is kinda a chaotic look at an already chaotic time we all ride through. It helps to understand the lyrics, but the song structure I feel is too repetitive. But that's ok. My fav would have to be Screaming Suicide.

I agree, they laid out all the riffs for a complete song in the first 2 minutes which is really cool and leans back into 80s era thrash with many layers of parts. They should have cut the number of repetition for each riff in 1/2. It would have made for better flow.

Yesterday I listened to this song with no prior exposure to it before. I agree with your perspective. There are super fun things they’re doing that throw curve balls at you throughout. But they build and build and then it stops… to give you a pre-chorus or whatever it’s called. It completely stops the momentum. I still love these guys but so far Lux AEterna is still my favorite track so far. Even that has the down strumming that stops the entire thing but at least the damn thing moves forward. What has made Metallica stand out is how their music drives a freight train through your psyche. They seem to be trying to please everyone or be more “heady” in the sense they want, like many artists who become accepted and successful, to help humanity in some way. To connect and be part of the good… but it almost feels like they’re trying too hard to be something else. Hey. I bought the album and will listen to it and love it because in the end they are still making music and that’s all I care about . It’s positive to create.. to share it and to talk about it. It’s healing. However, if you get into the weeds you could pick a part any song or group. On Hard Wired I felt there were four to five great songs. The rest they didn’t seem like themselves. However on the extended version of the album there were songs I feel should have made it to the original 12 track release. Another smart thing they do is their music comes out in the warmer weather. It’s more inspiring to envision them in a stadium and being there with all the fans... thanks for letting me vent.

I love this song, love the solo and especially love that bridge in it. I don't care if its long either, I mean, have you heard almost every metal song ever? They're all around 6 to 8 minutes lol. But yeah of course this is my personal opinion. Also I don't think getting annoyed about the lyrics not starting at the start of the song is a really good critic since you don't really got a Metallica song if the lyrics don't start a minute or after into the song lol.

A 20th century song in a 21 century production is exactly what our beloved bands sound indeed. I absolutly undrestand what shred is saying, specially about the solo, Kirk could prhygian more and everybody will be pleased. still the song is a banger, i don´t think the album is gonna be as good as the classic stuff (like since...96?) but the music is good, i belive even though Metallica does try to apeal to new generations making short to the point music for tik tok is not something they do on a regular basis, they know they fanbase is not on tiktok.

I just saw the album art for the first time 16:22.
The crib, with the broken balustrade... showing yhe silhouette of a grown man.
    Thats good!
Good art. Don't know who the artist was... probably commissioned ..
But i like uyt conceptually, it shows how the first 18 years, or 72 seasons, of life, build us into the man we become.
    Warts n all..
Or basically, our traumas in childhood become our lifelong viseage - for better and worse.

Master Of Puppets's title track is about the same length and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" only about 3/4 the length --- each has about 10x as much happening in it, with 10x better lyrics, and pulls the listener in 100x better.
I like the Abm - Em - F#m curveballs later in the track, but seriously, this screams out for an editor.
