    I found a small maple tree growing by the side of a path in April and planted it in a pot on my balcony, expecting it to be my only „real“ project and not really thinking about bonsai at all. Then I found this channel. Since then I have „rescued“ houseplants by rooting cuttings, started two avocado trees from seed and today I found an acorn in the forest that had already started sprouting. And yes, I put that in a pot as well.. I guess that whole thing really is a bit more addictive than I thought.. in my defense: Your content is really motivating :)

    Good to see you back working on the trees after all the labor you put in on the plant room.
    I loved that you started with one Hail Mary cut and ended up doing a novena! That first branch looked even more important after resigning in the whole tree.

    I am a beginner bonsai enthusiast (thanks to Nigel!) and this is the most informative video I have ever seen! All of a sudden something "clicked" and I saw the tree as miniature. Nigel, thank you for explaining important basic concepts so effortlessly!

    This tree is a beauty! Can't wait to see it developing years to come.
    My hibiscus (bought from nursery last spring) died probably due to lack of light or just because or the indoor dry air. Definitely will try again next year.
    I can see you're as glad as we are, that you're able to come back to the trees now they're safe and sound indoors :)

    I love the lower branch on the Hibiscus. It adds interest and to me makes a more bonsai look rather than ordinary tree. Just my two cents. Love your work and look forward to the next video. Congrats on the plant room, it was fun seeing a job done right.

    I think you should keep that lower branch. Though it distracts the flow line, It gives a new dimension to the tree. To me, the tree looks just "WOW" with that little branch.

    Great to see you working on trees again Nigel! I was thinking maybe you'd chop that first branch that moves to the left like you pondered and I was in agreement of that cutting. Then after you Prunned the top, I changed my mind. Great lesson in waiting. Work on other parts of the tree and that branch can always come off last, or next month or next year. Great video. Love that you had a flower in December!

    I like the small branch, without it the tree would look like an umbrella

  • @WiLheLmPhoeniX
    @WiLheLmPhoeniX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here in the Philippines, the common name of the hibiscus plant is "Gumamela".
    When I was a kid, my friends and I used to pick the flowers and leaves and then grind them to a pulp. After which, we would mix in some liquid soap and water, and we will use the mixture for blowing soap bubbles. I think the slime from the pulp helps in making the bubbles last longer.

  • @kosmozova
    @kosmozova 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would probably remove that low branch. It just doesn't flow well with an umbrella style. This branch would work on a conical shape, pad formed tree, I think. So, maybe next time...

      Adding to that, today I saw my ficuses (I have 7) are giving me new leaves an specifically the tiger barks (ficus retusa), are going crazy. Again, I wouldn't repot them until Florida gives me more than 70°F steady.

    In my opinion the lowest branch looks very good. It should stay. Definitely. What I don't like is branch above it (on the left side from my point of view) which is too straight, too long...

    Dear Nigel, thank you for sharing your passion and teachings with us. Watching this, as you were speaking about growing moss, I wanted to ask you: how do you keep your plant room humid for such good growing conditions? Thank you.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My room doesn't have any heating ducts from the furnace so all the air mostly stays in the room. With the number of trees I have, the air is always humid! I have a heater and a fan running in the room, so it is a bit like a greenhouse.

    Hi Nigel! Good choices, but honestly these cus should already have been made the last two times you pruned it. I still remember that I thought "cut it back harder, you will do it anyway in future". Now you had to cut away branch division and now it looks like raw material again. Nice to see you working on trees again. Enjoy!

    Thought. The side wall behind the Hibiscus tree. You have an unfinished wall that is not complete yet. Between the 2 windows, why not make that your background for your videos. A nice dark wall that would give you a nice background and absorb the heat from the winter sun for you. This way there is no moving items around to do a video. Wall set. No reflections and your studio is set. Might just work.

    Funny, I also started a hibiscus a couple years ago out of an old bush at my mother's house that she no longer wanted. I dug it up, potted it, trunked chopped it way back, and left it in my mother's back yard. It started to grow back beautifully! Then she threw it out because she had too many potted plant in her back yard 😭

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That reminds me of a time I pruned up a Lilac bush at my parents house, I spent an afternoon pruning it up to get a nice structure to it and it looked really nice when I was done. The next time I went over to their house, my father (who was not a gardener at all) had cut the Lilac down to the ground. He said it was hard to mow around! It did grow back in, but I let him do the pruning in the future!

    If you had to repot the tree, would you do it now, or wait until spring?

    • @JGGPilot
      @JGGPilot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would wait until closer to Spring (1-2 weeks prior) when energy levels start to rise inside the tree! Right now, even tropicals (very forgiving plants) are on a low energy state, which might not help with scars, branching, and root development. Main concern with a repot during colder temperatures, even on the tropics (averages are on the 60°F/ 16°C in some areas), is root damage. You want to avoid root damage at all costs.
      But that's just my humble opinion. I had to do a slip in repot for an emergency, broken pot not long ago. That's fine as long as the root system is left for the most part intact. Nigel is my biggest inspiration since I started with bonsais, and I would trust his opinion over mine!
      Blue skies!

    Hey I would love to see an update on this tree as I’m growing a hibiscus bonsai as well. I haven’t taken the same approach as you but I do know not many people are trying to bonsai this species. It has large leaves and usually grows as a cluster trunk. Although I found one with a very beautiful and thick trunk line. It has deadwood all the way up the trunk to the top. It’s very beautiful and I’m trying my best to develop it with the best of my knowledge. I’m willing to share pictures, just shoot me your email or instagram!
