      Matt, congrats on your EV purchase. Six years later and I'm still impressed with the ride and all the amenities that are included in this car. It only took 5 years to finally install a charger in my garage. th-cam.com/video/cYbnZuNGBAY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sFnUL1FI4YtERQJ9 but depending on your daily commute the included level 1 charger might suffice. Thank you watching.

    What is the best mileage y'all have been able to pull off?
    Mine's a 22 mile drive home from work and it only went down 6.
    Going to work is uphill so it goes down like 24.

    • @steviepii

      It's fun trying to maximize the efficiency.
      My modes button never worked and I've never went into the red to see it change like that either. Also I don't get the blue score. It usually ends up around 65ish.

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@steviepii It can definitely be fun trying to beat your previous best. I drive in mountainous area, so hyper-gliding on a down slope is great. Of course on the return trip you pay for it. The guesstimator is too unreliable for me, I prefer looking at the state of charge and compare that to the number of miles driven. I tend to get at least ten miles per segment, which works out to a range of 160. On the few times that I have dip into the red the 160 seems correct.
      I never use the mode button, although I make use of the regenerative braking via the shift lever as a speed governor. You can also use the cruise control to limit downhill speeds and charge the battery.

    Nice video! Did the range drop after 2 years of usage? How many miles has the car now?

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      After two years of driving and over 10,000 miles there has been no noticeable drop in range. Range does drop in winter weather but recovers during warm spells. Thanks for watching.

    Nice video....thanks! I'm planning to pick up an eGolf when my Passat lease is up next year and there is surprisingly minimal content on here.

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mainly due to the fact the e-Golf is a compliance car and therefore very little effort on VW part to push the vehicle. Also the majority of e-Golf sales are in Europe and hence only a very small allocation make it to the Americas. Add to that the fact they are only sold in a few states in the US and you have a car that is hard to come by.
      However VW is promising to come out with a line of all electric vehicles in the coming years.
      BTW I did a series of e-Golf Real World videos you may want to look at. Thanks for the feedback and watching.

      @@cfldriven Thanks! I'll definitely check out the other videos. I've been logging my daily mileage and I only drive approximately 25 miles per day. I think I'd be a solid candidate for a used EV (probably an eGolf). Even with their reduced range I could easily get by with one. They are an amazing deal on the used market.

    Nice Video. But how much real world range do you get in those various driving modes?

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Excellent question, my real world experience is that there are too many variables to give hard numbers. As you saw in the video I managed 117 real miles with an estimated 20 remaining. This was achieved without using ECO or ECO+ or even any of the Recuperation Stages, I simply drove in way to make the most of the car's inertia. I also watched ahead so that I could make the most of early braking to recuperate as much energy as possible. Would my range improve if I used ECO+ and B stage all the time? I think maybe a little, but I already drive in a way in which I feel I am maximizing my range.
      Now I do enjoy playing music and being comfortable in the car, these things use up energy, so there are time were I use the seat heater versus the climate controls. Other times just turning off the vents seems to make a difference in range. The modes and stages are tools that can make a difference for some people and for others there not needed. Some people enjoy the quick acceleration, ice cold A/C and will get much shorter range and that is okay for them. I know I can get 117 out of the car, but don't plan on intentionally letting the battery go down that low again. Thank you for the question and for watching. If you can subscribe.

    Even with an ICE vehicle I use the fuel gauge and the range gives me only an idea the distance I can travel.

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree, but unlike ICE the marketing material for EV tends to focus on range. Everyone seems to be concerned with how far it will go on a single charge, something we seldom are concerned with when considering ICE and the range of one tank of fuel.
      Thanks for watching.

    A question about break and regen. I´ve heard, that if you are breaking, the car recuperate first. Only if you more break than the max. recuperation, it breaks mechanically. And if you want to stand still.
    So it is more effective to step on the break if you need it and not to recuperate constantly.
    What is your experience?

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless I am going down an incline I tend not to use the gear shift recuperate stages. I prefer just break early and try to recuperate for as long as possible. My experience with the e-Golf and Prius is that if you do it right you will seldom use mechanical brakes which means an additional saving on the cost of ownership. Of course if you need to stop really quick the mechanical brakes are there if you push the pedal hard enough. Thanks for the question and I hope you can subscribe.

    Do you typically charge to 100% or less, say 80%? Any thoughts about or experience with the heat pump in the SEL? I assume it could only increase efficiency and range. Great vids! 👍

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      E-golf system prevents the battery pack from fully being charged, even though the car says 100%, the pack is not. For that reason I don't concern myself with the 80% theory, its already built in. Now if I were to store the car for any extended time I would leave it with 80% or less as recommended by VW. As to the heat pump, the SE doesn't have one. I know from having a heat pump at home that it is more energy efficient to transfer heat than to generate it. My winter experience has been a loss of 10 to 15 miles of range, but that is a combo of cold battery and using the heater. It silly that VW didn't include it in the SE. Still I find the seat warmer allow me to leave climate setting at 72F. Thanks for the questions and for watching.

    What is the best way for charging and if I can charge my battery pack every day?

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Question do you need to charge everyday? Depending on your usage it could be longer, in my case it is usually once a week. When I've used 2/3 of my range I consider charging, of course if I have a long trip the next day I will charge even if the car shows 3/4 SOC. Manufactures recommend not running down the battery and not topping it off to 100% all the time and to avoid consecutive DC charging for longer battery life.

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the 2016 battery pack is rated at 24.2 kWh compared to 2017's 35.8 kWh. Rated range goes from 83 miles on the 2016 to 125 miles on the 2017, although I can get 140 and if I had to run it down probably 160.

    Your battery was warm after charging is why your range was higher as it cooled the range will drop
    All ev,s do this

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which is another reason for not basing your range on the estimator. I prefer to look at the SOC indicator which is a much better indicator of available charge. I know in the summer each tick represents at least 10 miles of range, while in winter it is less. Thank you for sharing your info.

    I am super tempted by electric vehicles but I just don’t consider them as reliable. The technology is too young and the range isn’t there. Too many variables for me personally. The thing is I like long road trips and I feel like this would be all but impossible with a car like this. I’ll wait for VW’s later itérations before buying.

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What is your reliability concern? Battery pack warrantied for 8 yrs, ev cars have been in production since 2011, and require a lot less maintenance. Depending on your driving habits range may be an issue. In a week I seldom exceed the 130 mile range of my ev, but as long as you charge every night you could go 130 miles everyday. Twice that if your 130 mile work commute has a charging station. EV aren't for everyone but certainly an option for most typical driving. If you do enough long road trips perhaps a hybrid is a better choice.
      Thanks for sharing your viewpoint.

    • @BabyBugBug
      @BabyBugBug 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cfldriven Definitely not reliability in terms of parts and maintenance. Wrong choice of words. Basically when I'm out on the open road and I know I only have about 115 miles conservatively speaking... It's really scary to imagine that I may run out of power before I can find a charging port. Have you ever taken your e Golf on roadtrips?

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BabyBugBug I hear getting ev parts with VW can be a pain. Apparently they have to be shipped from Germany. Since 2017 the only maintenance has been tire rotation and cleaning cabin filter.
      I think the most I have driven in a single trip without charging along the way was about 90 miles. I won't take the ev beyond 60 miles one way unless I know there is a charging station nearby. Fortunately in western NC there are plenty of charging opportunities, when in doubt we take the Prius instead.

      3.5 year of ownership. Only issue was change tires and windshield wipers. That is it. Even the brakes are in great shape due to the regen system. Went from $320 month in gas with my SUV to $30 a month in power charging increase, some months zero when charging all public free. Plug in when I get home, Level 2 ev charger starts charging at 10 pm at .12 cents killowatt, next morning unplug. This is a 2016, so only 82+ miles when full, and I only use 1/2 a battery pack, so charges in 1 to 1.5 hours. But I rarely go more than 40 to 50 miles in a day. However, this is a 3rd car. For Ski, River rafting, etc. trips, I still use my SUV. But when home, this is the car I love to drive. I even stop driving my motorcycle becuase i like driving electric so much. Someday will get a 300+ mile electric. P.S. Fast Level 3 charges, the car can be charged from 0 to 80% full in 20 mins.

    • @BabyBugBug
      @BabyBugBug 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      X Galanty I think my second car will be an electric Volkswagen. I agree for daily driving it is best. I live in NYC so I don’t need it for daily driving but the vast majority of what I go to is within 60 miles, which will let the car suit my needs. My Jetta will be for long distance trips.

    I’m a Realtor who likes A/C during all seasons and sometimes the heater, but I always use climate control to 72degrees, and I play music at medium level, any idea what my range would be. I live in Southern California

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not noticed the music level making any difference, what will make a big impact is the way you drive. In the same way as you can get good or bad mpg with your foot, same applies to EV. I pretty much level the climate control in AUTO so it is running all the time and I can 130 on a full charge. Without the AC running I can get about 164. The battery does not like extreme heat or cold, both will lower your range. Also since most people recharge over night, range is seldom a concern unless you have long commutes.
      Hope this helps answer your question.
