  • Grease Guns haven't changed in years - until now. Tractor Time with Tim uses a new Lube Shuttle Grease Gun to grease the hardest to get to fitting on Johnny (John Deere 1025R). Tim is able to grease the drive shaft with no mess, no wasted grease, and no air gaps! Of course, we negotiated a discount for our viewers!

    If you're on the fence or unsure....get it! You won't regret it! I can vouch for the Lube-Shuttle with the Lock n Lube Coupler. All my life I've been using the typical grease gun. Never, ever, ever will I go back after using this setup! I like it so much that I ordered my dad one for his 77th birthday except I got him the electric Lube-Shuttle gun with the Lock n Lube Coupler. He grew up on a ranch/farm and is always mechanicing on something. he's only been using it for a month., but I bet I get a few texts & even a few videos letting me know how much he appreciates it! I got us both the Li400 grease. I think it's the best all purpose grease. I ordered using the TTWT code and saved some $$!!

      Do you need the needle grease gun attachment for the one difficult zerk on the 1025r or will the lock on coupler reach and work?

    I had the dealer enlarge the hole for that hard to reach fitting and it made things much easier!

    Tim, thanks for your video's. I've been around tractors all my life, but have recently acquired a 1025R as my first tractor ever. I sure wish you and your wife were my neighbors! Keep up the great work and I appreciate your time and effort you and your wife spend on making the videos. They are extremely useful to me.

    The key to easy greasing of that drive shaft fitting is to "hog it out" with a big or multiple drill bits to do whatever it takes to make the hole bigger. Won't hurt your tractor. I enlarged that opening years ago and no structural issue so far.

    I am so glad to see this technology. I know a few folks in Western KY that I have forwarded this video to. One guy in particular that had a JD 2000 series Tractor have the rear Drive shaft run dry and explode damaging the transaxle and other parts under the deck before he could get the engine shut down. Great vid!!

    Tim, Thanks for grease fitting tour. I wasn't sure of all the zerk fitting locations. My main drive shaft fitting has been ignored by my helper....got it now after I got a needle...Thanks again.!. I like the new grease threaded refill cartridge gun. I bought a DeWalt max battery grease gun ($120) a while ago since I had problems working the manual gun handle under the tractor. Fortunately it hasn't leaked yet. I like your screw-on cartridge demo also.

    Great video guys. The lube shuttle looks like a great grease gun and system I agree the grease doesn't seem to be anymore expensive than the regular grease tubes we buy. I have had a lock and lube for several years and it is awesome and has held up very well really can't recall a problem I've had with it. I like the ideal of using the needle in hard to reach places I have never bought one but think I will. Thanks for sharing this informative video with us. Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!

    Great video, have been using one of those needle adapters for years, there is also a thin needle adapter that you can use to grease u-joints and ball ends that do not have zerk fittings installed in them, grease gun looks interesting , still using the old style ones might have to update someday! Again great info

    Doing your own greasing as Tim does is a guaranteed way to get the job done to your expectations. Too many times I have seen & heard of taking vehicle or equipment in for service, then immediately after find dirty dry zerks or zerks with gobs of grease on them because they didn't take grease. Had Polaris ATV that had impossible zerk to reach, asked dealer how they greased it, "oh we don't try to grease that one" 😠 Great Video, thanks Tim!!!

    Good video. I have had the same grease gun for 40 plus years. I just recently switched to a Lube Shuttle electric (lithium battery powered) grease gun and won’t go back to my old one. I put a Lock N Lube head on it it and bought the Lock N Lube kit as well. Has definitely made greasing easier! And my brother has the same tractor and he bought a flexible grease hose with a threaded end on one side and a zerk fitting on the other side to replace that hard to reach zerk fitting from the bottom. He got it long enough to make for easy access. I’ll have to check his out and do the same modification.

    This video reminded me of an old mechanics trick. I am an old mechanic. Adapt a length of 5/16th brake line to the nozzle and hold the flare end on the fitting. The brake line can easily be bent to allow easier alignment with the fitting. The pressure from the gun will unseat the ball in the grease fitting.

    Tim, you said that today was a dreaded day because of having to grease the tractor. But, isn't ANYTHING to do with the tractor better than a day at your day-job?
    Thanks one more time for sharing these little tips and solutions to small issues that bug us. I agree with the other guy who was wondering why that opening couldn't be enlarged so the normal Lock-N-Lube tip would fit. Just a 3/4" or a 1" Cobra bit with some of the smaller steps ground off (so it will still clear the zerk fitting when it finishes opening the hole) should work fine to open the hole without removing that plate. Then a small de-burring knife will smooth it off on both sides from below. BTW, I did mention this issue with my Deere dealer and he says that Deere will be enlarging that hole soon. They say it fits SOME grease fittings, but it also doesn't line up with the zerk well enough to work.
    Also, thanks very much for the heads up on the new Lube Shuttle gun! That IS a big improvement over older guns that tend to seep the oil that grease normally secretes.
    As always, another very informative, and entertaining video. But, we miss Katrile's(sp?) inputs!

    I had to replace that very shaft assembly on my 2320. During the replacement process I found the real problem with the old u-joint and also one of the new joints in the assembly. The joints were not machined correctly and would not allow new grease into the bearing caps. This problem can lead to very early failure and John Deere has not recognized the problem or accepted responsibility, I had to badger them to get 50% off the purchase of the new assembly. To be fair I never told them of the problem I found but if anyone else experiences this failure you can do what you want with this information. Mine failed at only 150 hours. Using an automobiles driveshaft for example, 150 hours x 45 mph (average speed for most vehicles) = 6,750 miles. Obviously the factory assembly lube should have lasted that long. But the factory lube was not able to reach the bearing caps. Great video Tim. Also JD had failed to indicate this u-joint existed in the service manual and has since revised the manual.

    Even better! A rechargeable battery pack electric grease gun! An old gas station might have a gun that you hook up to air pressure, but you have to be near an air drop to use it. Oh, I forgot, those needle greasers also have a special zerk that makes it easier to use.

      I just did my 50 hour service on my 1023e without removing the tire, without lifting the tractor up, and other than the too tight drain plug and strainer screen retention screw, I had no difficulties with access including to the filter and greasing the drive shafts. I simply dropped the quick connect arrangement and disconnected the drive shaft so could rotate it, and getting at the grease fittings and filter was simple. For the front wheel drive shaft I may have been lucky as both fittings happened to be easily accessible from the right hand side. The total time for greasing was less than 15 minutes including driving to the hangar and reinstalling the mower. I just received my hand squeeze grease gun and LokcNLube fitting this afternoon, (a few hours after I finished the job of course). Thanks for the heads up on those, Tim!

    I use a Snap on cordless at work and bought another one for my 1025R. I got the factory manual CD, mine still only has 118 hours. However when it comes to equipment maintenance you have to figure by days on low hour use equipment. We have a oil analysis machine at work, so I'm going to pull samples so I can have base line readings. These records will also verify the condition of the machine if I was to trade or sell.

    Tim you was talking about that auto connect I meant being so old. My Johnny is now 3 years old. I guess it's one year newer than yours but my first auto connect just did last a year. And it was simply because one of the universal joints was not getting grease to one of the caps. And when it went out it beat the crap out of the bottom side of the tractor. So if you ever start getting a little noise while you're mowing. Stop mowing immediately because, I heard the noise about 5 minutes before the shaft came apart. In fact I was still trying to figure out what the noise was when it came apart. The good news was John Deere did replace it under warranty and fixed the one hydraulic hose that it broke. However now on my drive shaft to the front wheels has a dent in it. It don't bother me and it don't seem to bother the way the tractor performs. But it could have been a lot worse. I was told that it could have actually came through the floorboard and got my foot. Because there is scars on that floor board from that episode. So yeah if you start hearing a little slop in the drive shaft stop and replace the U-joints. Don't try to finish mowing your grass.

      Yea, not sure why we never kept one of these needle tips handy on the farm. I THINK it was because we didn’t have a LockNLube. Now that you connect the needle with a grease fitting, and use the locking coupler, it is much easier to switch to and from the needle.

      I have several variety of grease gun fittings. 90 degree, 45 Degree, needle nozzle you have, a 1/4 circle flat greaser for putting grease between rubber bushings and an actual needle that pierces through a rubber seal

    The red pistol grip looks like a Alemite 555.... I have about 10 of those. I’ve since switched to battery powered because I grease so much everyday. Alemite will replace the cylinder cap if yours leaks. They have great customer service. Btw did you see that Lincoln copied LocknLube and released their version this year called PowerLock?

    FYI Newer Dodge trucks have one fitting on the driveline that also needs to be greased with a needle tip. 2008 and 2011 3/4ton diesel trucks do so quite a few people should be familiar with a needle tip.

    I got the grease gun package (grease gun,2 tubes of good grease and I opted for the locking fixture). The grease gun is excellent, the grease is excellent, the locking tip is useless. I figured why get a lock n load when I can get the fancy German tip that goes with the UNIT. I tried it on every zerk I could find, it would not stay. A simple tug and it popped right off. I ordered a lock n load with the brass adapter, it went right on and works very well. The German unit looks elegant and well made, the lock n load looks primitive, is well made and WORKS. I'm sure the German unit works well over there but American buyers should be advised.

      Wished I had known about the Milwaukee before buying the one Tim recommends. Its about the same price here in Canada as the LS and when I borrowed my son-in-law's before the arrival of the Lube-Shuttle, I couldn't get over how fast it was. Of course, Tim does great videos and I followed his process for doing my 1023E.

    This might be a dumb question but why not simply enlarge the access hole in that plate below the grease fitting? It doesn't appear that enlarging that hole would compromise the integrity of that plate. They you could simply stick your Lock 'N Lube XL right up there and lock on to the fitting. Tractor Mike was pushing the Lube Shuttle guns also. I'm a little leery of using non-JD approved grease on the tractor and backhoe. So while it looks convenient, I'll be sticking with standard tubes.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fail to understand why that hole is so small. Fully agree with you there. ...not only is it too small, it is not located in the proper location.
      As for the grease, this IS Deere approved grease. NLGI grades all of these greases. They are certified. I can find more detail if you'd like. I don't keep all this certification details in my mind!
      Yes, I discussed with Tractor Mike. His videos do a great job of showing the gun. ...but the TTWT code doesn't work there :-)

    You might want to check out Univer-co from Canada. It is a smaller grease gun locking grease zert option. I do like the grease gun but the only flaw is you can't go get grease tubes for it as easy as the standard tubes you can get those anywhere. If you have to order your replacement tubes online and for a larger expense it could be a problem.

    Once I learned that the lower console can be removed to expose the U joint from the top, problem solved. Two side covers and 4 Philipps screws ... with the benefit of seeing that the grease is going where you want it. Sometimes you can "feel" that in a blind greasing from underneath, other times not. Are you greasing inside the joint or just piling up a big gob of grease next to it ??? Not as likely with the needle, I suppose, because you can see better.

    The biggest problem i have with that gun as far as i can see, is that you have to use “Their” lubricants,, and for me personally i like to be able to change brands etc,, as new and or better lubricants become available...and also i feel the “Lock-N-Lube” attachment seem from what i can see a better solution,, fits tighter on the zerk etc...

      These guys are a grease manufacturer. One of only a few. They have LOTS of types of grease. Enough to make my head spin. They tell me that this style of tube is popular in Europe. So, maybe it will become easier to buy grease here.
      I like the LockNLube too. ...a LOT. Did you see the small adapter ($5) to make it work on this gun? Maybe I'll get one and try it for a later video. it appears to be only 1/2 inch long or so.

    • @powderriver2424
      @powderriver2424 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      PhatboyHD88 And I’ll bet the grease they have is as good as anything here that’s made in the USA but if these things catch on you’ll start seeing domestic manufacturers either getting license rights or some form of their own cartridge system.

    • @MrJimmynilsson74
      @MrJimmynilsson74 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Over here in europe all manufacturers have there own greas in the sam cartridges. So you are not locked into one manufacturers grease. Choose the brand you like. Once you get one you will never go back.
