Great set there Steve. In the early days you always knew when a PIF was going to start as the video almost always played before the audio kicked in. Shame the government no longer makes PIFS like they used to. You were guaranteed to see several a week back in the 80's and 90's.
The campaigns were created and funded by the now defunct Central Office of Information (COI). it was the successor to the Ministry of Information that had existed from 1918 to 1946. Sadly in 2011 the then coalition government closed down the COI. The few PIFs we get now are organised by the Cabinet Office.

When I was 13 I got run over by a car crossing the road walking home from school. It was doing 50mph in a 30 zone. I nearly died (apparently 7 out of 10 people hit at 50 do), my arm was nearly amputated until my dad brought in a Harley Street surgeon who somehow saved it, and I was in hospital for months. Birmingham Children's Hospital decided to show us safety films, so I dutifully watched one about not climbing up electricity pylons, and another one about not going on railway lines. I have never felt the urge to climb an electricity pylon or go on a railway line. Talk about adding insult to injury (literally!) I was not pleased. I was only crossing the road!

I remember it as though it were yesterday even though it was 33 years ago! My parents had been preparing for a University of Birmingham ball and it was my sister's piano teacher who organised the ambulance (it was during an ambulance strike so I waited on the road for half an hour until a Green Goddess arrived and some Army people took me to hospital. I didn't realise I knew swear words until then!) Anyway we were in the hospital and the doctors were saying "the arm will need to come off". Despite a massive head injury, and I still have the bald spot on my scalp, I was perfectly compos mentis, and I hissed "Dad!" And he looked at me. The upper part of my arm was smashed but I said "I can move my fingers!" And I did. That was when he asked for a second opinion. I don't blame the driver. He was a taxi driver and had worked a 12 hour shift and was tired. He left his job that day, so the police told me. It was just a very sad chain of events.
