This was earlier than 1985. I remember seeing this when I was about 4-5 in 1982-1983. When I was about 6 I got lost and was asked for a lift by a stranger and thanks to this advert I said no. Probably saved my life.

why has tv stopped doing these adds ,,, kids learn more from them ,,i had a close call at 10 years old a man in a princess car asked if i wanted a lift home ,i said No -because of Charlie says dont talk to strangers ad campaign i said to the man NO and thankyou , That was in Hull in the 70s and that add campaign was on the TV at the time that is one of the memories i will never forget ,and i am 50 now , kids today are in far more danger than back then

Utterly agree. 2 men tried to snatch me when I was 11 in 1979. I saw them get out a van, one grabbed my arm, I twisted and ran like hell the 2 streets home. Adverts like that had made me wary. Sad but essential.

Same thing happened to my brother and me in about 1971. Our near misses happened a long time ago. Kids today are in far more danger? You really think so? Kids today are nearly bullet-proof against the lure of strangers, and I seriously doubt they are more likely to be approached today than when we were all kids. Hell, when I was 4, I used to walk to the store by myself on errands for my mom - about 4 blocks away. She gave me money and a list for the man at the store, and he put the change in the bag. When my brother and I were both 6, we were too old for babysitters. Little kids are FAR more closely guarded these days. When we were kids, those were the dangerous times we learned our lessons from so kids today can be in far LESS danger. (When was the last time you saw a kid on a bike without a helmet? I think I was still in my 20s. They learned from us!)

Most stranger danger footage shows the strangers trying to entice children into their cars. I wonder how modern children would see this as so many are carried by car these days rather than walking? Especially as there are probably families who can't afford cars, and a naive child might see a ride in one as a treat. Don't!!
