From my general understanding is that the main problem with 2-bladed weapons is that in almost all scenarios reach is preferable ability to strike with both ends. Basically 2-bladed weapons give you the inconvenience of polearm while only being slightly superior to regular swords. Additionally it wasn't uncommon for polearms to have spike at the end. While it was mainly used to plant the polearm firmly to the ground, you could still to back end strikes with it. In almost all applications very tiny blade at the end would basically do the same trick as longer blade, while giving more handle for better leverage (and allowing longer reach at the other end)
I imagine if anyone were to use it as a somewhat less bs way than jedi and other media representation you could make one of the sheathes lockable so that its a (somewhat short but still) polearm until you unsheathe the other blade in some anime protagonist moment. Now i kinda want to see it applied in a game like monster hunter (because they already have a lot of morphing weapons) or a soulslike.
It's always interesting to see a master apply their knowledge and skills with something that isn't what their typical. That's how you know that the person is a master, because it shows their deeper level of understanding of their techniques, application, and adaptability.
I actually really like it having one shorter and one longer blade. Most Twinblades are the same length on both end, but this one is almost approaching the point of being a pole arm with a spike on the end. I feel like that definitely would make it much more plausible to use
It's always super interesting to see how easily Seki sensei adapts real techniques from his style to any weapon he is given. One thing would be being creative and come up with things on the spot which is amaizing enough but he understands Asayama Ichiden ryu so deeply that every weapon he is handed might aswell always been a staple in the style. A true master of his craft, no wonder he is the head master of the style.
The second technique in the first 12 seconds is also used in Irish stick fighting when the stick is gripped in a two thirds grip, meaning two thirds (the business end) is above your hand and the last one third is below your hand. The lower is used to "block" driving the heavier knob end into the attacker.
I'm irish and perhaps the first time iv heard of this. Seems little bit similar to the Philippines stick fighting I tried a long time ago. But they used two short sticks and put speed into it. Us irish are stubborn and love a scrap so may have been a cuase for concern if the 2 ever met. Hope to find a group around cork. Thank you for bringing to my attention. 👍
double blades like this are weapons where I'm always on the line of how practical would they actually be? I've seen stuff breaking them down claiming they'd be trash. others that say they'd be useful but hard to use. and from my own toying around with stuff like double blade lightsabers my thoughts come on the line of it being hard to use, but being really good at defensive due to being able to go for a target while blocking at the same time, potentially even going for the legs and or head depending on where your opponent choses to block. So it's really cool to see someone with this level of sword training and knowledge break down and show how it could be used and that it could be a pretty viable weapon.
The most realistic, I'd think, was crouching and letting the opponent bring both of their arms down onto the blades lol But these all looked really cool and doable if you had to use this weapon (and if you were Seki-sensei)
shadaversity did something similar in a vid where they duct taped 2 foam swords together to try sparring, single edged actually seemed to make it easier to use than that version, since you dont have to grip a short handle, and simply half sword with your hand on one side of the blade. and basically concluded that you have a big advantage against a normal sword, but it struggled against pole weapons. who really knows if it might be better than an average pole arm at dueling though, since they are impractical to make and carry around, so no1 really trained a lot with it. the only historical double edged blade I can think of was the guandao, which was kind of like a naginata that can also hook on one side, and often had a spear end on the other. I personally think it'd work better with a nagimaki blade. real historical reason you probably didnt see it is not that its a really bad weapon, its just impractical to make and carry as a side arm or self defense weapon, like a normal katana. it struggles against a long pole weapon like a naginata or yari, which also was better as a formation weapon. much easier to just equip yourself with a nodachi, bow or pole weapon while having a katana and or wakizashi, tanto on your waste as a side arm.
They really should hire seki-sensei for choreography in every samurai movie, his kobudo techniques are natural, smooth and beautiful and it works for real killing too instead of unnecessary sword clashes that might break the katana in real fight
I'm really curious what he'd do with the bagua weapon deerhorn knives. As a proponent of their use, I wonder how he would interpret their strengths and weaknesses. The fact that every part of the weapon except the part you hold has an edge and you use them in pairs would be very interesting.
I totally support this. I actually quite like the deerhorn knives and wonder how he'd interpret their use. Maybe at the end they could watch a video of a sifu using them to compare and contrast.
These are the kind of videos that made me subscribe. Sensei using weapons he is not used to and still being a master. It would be amazing to see sensei use a parrying dagger . It can catch a sword.
There are 'sword breaker' weapons (jitte?) that could serve the same purpose as parrying daggers. You can't stab with them, but you can parry or bind a blade. He'd probably re-invent every move in the European manuals.
In addition to double sided spear lots of pole arms have a spear end or butt spike, double ended pole/staff type weapons were fairly common all over the world, but they get unwieldy with shorter handles.
In the Pathfinder tabletop roleplaying game there's a weapon called a "double walking stick katana" that's described as being a staff that has two wakizashi blades concealed within on either end, and while sheathed you can use it to strike like a staff for blunt damage, but when unsheathed, you can slash with the blades. However, the description makes it unclear if the weapon is meant to be similar to this weapon with the blades being attached in the middle, or if they're meant to be two separate and independent wakizashi blades that draw out of a central sheath.
I think that an important element is that the design of this (toy) weapon had not only one blade shorter than the other, but also both blades facing the same side. I supposed that if it had been one of those fantasy double-bladed weapons with blades facing opposite directions, not even Seki Sensei with his skills and knowledge could have made much out of it given the risk to cut yourself with that inherently bad design.
I've been adapting the Bo-staff techniques of Shito Ryu for two decades now, it's nice to see a master proving me right. I've been infatuated with Darth Maul's double blade since I was 9 or 10 and I keep trying to tell/show people that it's perfectly doable. It's nice to jave another piece of evidence for it. If you haven't seen Shadiversity's video on the Double Blade, I highly recommend it! It's very informative.
I once saw a stage act using this kind of blade. But they didn't draw the second blade right away. Instead the sword acted like an extended hilt and fought like a staff or even mini naginata. Then when the openent was open the drew the scabbard off the second blade and "stabbed" a second oppnent. I suppose it could be effective like a sort of long reach katana with a surprize blade to catch an oponent unawares?
Reminds me a lot of fighting with polearms - there would often be a rear spike for such manoeuvres - need to watch your video from a few months ago on how Seki Sensei fought with the Halberd!
A double-sided sword would be more effective with a longer handle and if it is handled like a polearm, I've seen people test it with both two swords directly attached to one another with no modification, meaning there isn't much space to change your grip, and a long handle on it, meaning you can use it like a polearm Edit: Seki-sensei shows this too, as he grips the flat side of the shorter blade due to holding it with both hands on the handle being uncomfortable Edit 2: This is also further demonstrated by the comparisons to the Joujutsu
I think a possible stronger reason for not using this weapon historically would be the awkward storage requirement. You can't use Iaijutu or battoujutu quite as well if there's a sheath on both ends, and even just carrying it normally on the waist would likely be much more inconvenient with how far forward the shorter blade would end up.
This is one of those weapons that, if it existed, would either be for specialized duels or carried by a servant or on a wagon or saddle until time to use it. Given how most battles work, I'd say it's best for one-on-one rather than combat.
At some points, it seems similar to a naginata. I'm sure Seki Sensei could come up with more interesting ways to utilize this, given more time. I'd also bet there are many ways to "half sword" (I'm unsure of the Japanese equivalent) by grasping the faces of the blade between palm and fingertips. It would be excellent to see any unusual, foreign weapons come into Seki Sensei's grasp, whether a polearm similar to some Yari such as the European ranseur or less analogous weaponry like the poleaxe or bec de corbin. Thank you for sharing!
Having left a comment on a previous vid about a bat'leth and seeing another here, this video really has me excited. I mean even some of (if not all) the techniques would work wonders and potentially better with less risk to self
if possible, Seki Sensei giving some thoughts on the weapon would be nice, even if its just negatives. I assume your narration was based on what he said while testing and filming, but if he thinks something like "with a longer hilt this would be better" or whatever would be interesting to hear from a master such as him when talking about weapons from pop culture and fiction.
Seki-sensei's use of both staff and sword techniques seems to me like what most fantasies of the twinblade weapons envision. A weapon with the versatility of a staff, and the cutting power of a blade, combining all the advantages into one "super-weapon" that is better than either one. To me, it seems like the greatest use would be the ability to block with one blade and using that momentum to strike with the other, making your opponent more wary to use fierce strikes.
I've always disliked these double edged swords because every time you see them in media you see them being used as swords, so seeing Seki Sensei use the weapon as a staff was really lovely to see and very enjoyable to watch, thank you!
It looks like thrusting techniques aren't very safe since it has no guard. I wonder if the design would be more effective if the handle was longer and one of the blades was shorter.
The Souls series, Darth Maul's lightsaber, Thanos, and Serge from Chrono Cross all use twinblades, though these all feature blades of the same length and sometimes facing opposite directions (this last change would make a big difference). But the one obscure character that I can think of who did use a sword just like this is Hotaru from Samurai Deeper Kyo (which is a manga that I doubt anyone here has read 😅). As a kid, he was one of my favorite characters and I was always curious how one could make this kind of sword work. Really fun to see your guys' thoughts on it. :) I do think the weapon would be way more effective/versatile with just a longer handle, either by elongating the weapon or sacrificing a little bade.
I'm actually wondering if a weapon similar to this actually exists in real life. The way that is being used looks like it's realistically possible in a different nation besides Japan.
I like this weapon was seex them from years ago in the game onimusha - shippu katana was the name of this weapon in the game with the magic power of the wind
How fascinating! Of course Seki Sensei would use a combination Shunjō and reverse grip techniques with the double bladed sword to maximise the impact of both blades! I'd personally love to see Seki Sensei use the double bladed sword for the kata where Seki Sensei is surrounded by 7 other samurai as show in the "What would you do if 7 Samurai surrounded you?" Video from 9 months ago. If you want to see it too, please comment "I want to see Seki Sensei fight 7 samurai with the double bladed sword!" in the replies or as a separate comment. If we're lucky, maybe we'll see it as a TH-cam Short!
In highland staff fighting, we have this thing known as a Shealladh. It is both a walking stick and a defense weapon. It would be interesting to see his opinion on the Norse wrinkle knife, or the Gaelic Gà-ìn throwing darts if you ever do a Highlander episode, as these would have been seen and used by Scotts during the 800s.
I think the best design using double ended bladed staff weapons would be a double spear with two sided blades on each end. The sharp edges would be far enough away from the user as to avoid self injury and you can still use almost every technique you could with other double sided weapons.
Sensei's skill with any weapon is impressive. Sensei wore a purple belt today. Why is that? Has Seki Sensei ever used a wooden battle staff with metal tips at both ends?
Hm. I do wonder how it'd work out with a longer handle like what Shadiversity did with his double blade longsword. As well as how tsubas would affect things here. Would it be fair to say you could apply similar techniques shown here to the nagamaki?
@rafitohornero3850 musashi said to keep a short sword by your bed but you can use anything you'd use for hunting/farming relatively easy for home defense
I may know some people in Japan with combat quality 14th century European armor if Seki-sensei might like to try fighting against or even wearing that style of armor.
The person who said Bat'leth was right. I'd be very curious to see Sensei try the Klingon arsenal of martial weapons. If y'all decide to do it, here's the list to look up: bat'leth d'k tahg gin'tak spear kligat kur'leth kut'luch mek'leth mevak tajtIq
It’s not the lethality that’s the issue. As we have seen, a master can make it just as deadly if not more so than a normal sword. It’s the practicality of carrying the damn thing on the march or in battle formation. That’s why two-bladed swords never caught on.
I like this weapon. Think of this jo technique combined with hand and half from Western techniques it is not a sword or a glaive. Been working on jo and sword techniques 8:49 with a 30-inch steel bar 3/4 thick. I see a lot of potential for a piece of steel picked up from a farm. now onto this weapon shorten the main blade so it can be used more spear-like and ad in hand in halved techniques with spear, jo, and sword. That would be a very versatile weapon 😀
I also was really curious how Seki Sensei would handle the Darth Maul saber... Most of these techniques are not possible when the other blade is like a giant acetylene torch 😅
Love these videos but some of his moves are only doable in an absolute perfect scenario with perfect timing, like at 5:55 he's doing some insanely risky parries that leave almost no room for error or you will die because his distance has to be so close to the opponent.
I can't find any reference of this kind of sword for purchase with those fittings, however there are ones with a Tsuba on both sides or ones like the Stormshadow Linking hero swords from the GI Joe movies.
man now i wanna know where i can get that specific twinblade katana used in the vid, cause dammit all of seki sensei didn't show much of a master class he is with numerous weapon types.
How was this sheathed and carried around, to then be unsheathed and ready for battle? 🤔 honestly to me as cool as this weapon is, it just doesn't seem suitable for not ready combat. Not sure if this is just something to practice with for competition, as I've only worked with katana and the odachi (odachi) being my favorite 😍 of course 😉 but how would one use this as a carry around and then unsheathed to use quickly for combat?
Would like to watch a demonstration of an unaware warrior and also a readied combat situation from a carried sheathed position . In order to make this weapon more effective for one to use in actual combat, I for one would love to see some techniques used for unsheathing this quickly and responding to oncoming attacks in a quick session. @vksasdgaming9472
realistically a Double bladed sworded would never work (Except Sensei makes it works, he'a the exception). A double Tipped Spear though? Sign everyone up. I think a good weapon he would love is a Khopesh sword from Egypt, lot of folk love the Khopesh
the villain in the 2013 movie, "Ninja: Shadow of a Tear" actually used such a weapon in the final fight. Maybe not realistic but it does show it is possible.

THAT would be hilarious😆

oohhh yeah, that would be a fun episode, to see how Seki Sensei would wrap his mind around how to use it would be interesting indeed.
Stole the words from my keyboard. I came down here to same the same thing.
"I'm sorry, I brought something weird again" 😂
I love how you can hand him anything and he'll be like: yeah, I can use this...
I'd love to show us how to deal with armour.
You can give Seki sensei a toothpick and he'll go: "This is how you use this against a sword user" etc :D
I second the armor idea
+1 for armor

Seki Sensei is one of very few people on the planet who can actually make that weapon work.
Now I’m imagining Seki Sensei with a double-bladed red lightsaber, with Duel of the Fates playing in the background 😁
*Darth Maul:* Where have you been all my life, Master?!
Seeing him meet Ray Park would be really interesting…

That redirection block and immediate counter strike is devistating.
Special weapons are back! I would love to see Seki Sensei try out a HEMA saber and tachi in the future.
Tachi would be used exakly like an uchigatana just a bit longer
@@martinhg98 Oops, I meant more from the draw, since a tachi is carried differently from an uchigatana.

real historical reason you probably didnt see it is not that its a really bad weapon, its just impractical to make and carry as a side arm or self defense weapon, like a normal katana. it struggles against a long pole weapon like a naginata or yari, which also was better as a formation weapon. much easier to just equip yourself with a nodachi, bow or pole weapon while having a katana and or wakizashi, tanto on your waste as a side arm.
Well, in China they used double pointed spear, but it was rare and an advanced weapon to use.
In addition to double sided spear lots of pole arms have a spear end or butt spike, double ended pole/staff type weapons were fairly common all over the world, but they get unwieldy with shorter handles.
I'd like to see his take on some early modern blades like hangers, & smallswords.
Always surprising how Sensei can handle anything in a whim without even flinchng.
It would be interesting to give a Nagamaki to seki-sensei. Maybe there are some traditional katas that used it in the past
Yes yes! I was literally coming here to comment how I would like to see sekay sensei's practical application interpretation of the Klingon batleth.
Seki sensei is a skillful martial artist!
Once again, Seki-sensei showing how a nonstandard weapon can be done.
I hope GameDevs watch this and take note of these techniques, so we can see them in games.
Reminds me a lot of fighting with polearms - there would often be a rear spike for such manoeuvres - need to watch your video from a few months ago on how Seki Sensei fought with the Halberd!
This makes me want to see Seki sensei use a double bladed lightsaber
A double-sided sword would be more effective with a longer handle and if it is handled like a polearm, I've seen people test it with both two swords directly attached to one another with no modification, meaning there isn't much space to change your grip, and a long handle on it, meaning you can use it like a polearm
Edit: Seki-sensei shows this too, as he grips the flat side of the shorter blade due to holding it with both hands on the handle being uncomfortable
Edit 2: This is also further demonstrated by the comparisons to the Joujutsu
I think a possible stronger reason for not using this weapon historically would be the awkward storage requirement. You can't use Iaijutu or battoujutu quite as well if there's a sheath on both ends, and even just carrying it normally on the waist would likely be much more inconvenient with how far forward the shorter blade would end up.
This is one of those weapons that, if it existed, would either be for specialized duels or carried by a servant or on a wagon or saddle until time to use it. Given how most battles work, I'd say it's best for one-on-one rather than combat.
7:39
A very true statement and one of the reasons I watch these videos
I know he has slowed down his strikes, but given some of the strikes, It would cause me to call in sick the day after.
Let's be honest, 6:12 would be an awesome anime fight scene momen⚔️
I hope Seki Sensei can try Nagamaki
At some points, it seems similar to a naginata. I'm sure Seki Sensei could come up with more interesting ways to utilize this, given more time. I'd also bet there are many ways to "half sword" (I'm unsure of the Japanese equivalent) by grasping the faces of the blade between palm and fingertips.
It would be excellent to see any unusual, foreign weapons come into Seki Sensei's grasp, whether a polearm similar to some Yari such as the European ranseur or less analogous weaponry like the poleaxe or bec de corbin.
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you.
I assume your narration was based on what he said while testing and filming, but if he thinks something like "with a longer hilt this would be better" or whatever would be interesting to hear from a master such as him when talking about weapons from pop culture and fiction.
i think your guys rotating fan is about to catch on fire
I do think the weapon would be way more effective/versatile with just a longer handle, either by elongating the weapon or sacrificing a little bade.
I'm actually wondering if a weapon similar to this actually exists in real life. The way that is being used looks like it's realistically possible in a different nation besides Japan.
Sensai demonstrates the errors of students ways: student giggles.
I like this weapon was seex them from years ago in the game onimusha - shippu katana was the name of this weapon in the game with the magic power of the wind
So Yukimura from Samurai Warriors is somewhat realistic.
Interesting.
Oh no lol Havent seen the video but I watch enough to know that seki Sensei will have a lot of fun with this.
In highland staff fighting, we have this thing known as a Shealladh. It is both a walking stick and a defense weapon. It would be interesting to see his opinion on the Norse wrinkle knife, or the Gaelic Gà-ìn throwing darts if you ever do a Highlander episode, as these would have been seen and used by Scotts during the 800s.
love these guys
At this point, he can turn a frying pan…
…into a dying pan.
Wonderful Video as always, lovely to see weapon arts arent dead yet.
YEAH!!!...
Praise the PAN
Now I want to see that for real! :D
I think the best design using double ended bladed staff weapons would be a double spear with two sided blades on each end. The sharp edges would be far enough away from the user as to avoid self injury and you can still use almost every technique you could with other double sided weapons.
you can see the guy flinch back whenever seki sensei goes in, he's definitely eaten at least one strike during full sparring before lmao
Someone give Sensei a Klingon bakleth. It is a fictional weapon, but it has potential.
Sensei's skill with any weapon is impressive.
Sensei wore a purple belt today. Why is that?
Has Seki Sensei ever used a wooden battle staff with metal tips at both ends?
So cool 👍
Hm. I do wonder how it'd work out with a longer handle like what Shadiversity did with his double blade longsword. As well as how tsubas would affect things here.
Would it be fair to say you could apply similar techniques shown here to the nagamaki?
can u give this man a English billhook polearm?
they have their own billhook its called *kama yari* or a sickle spear.
give him the best medieval weapon a bec de corbin
@rafitohornero3850 it's close but has differences
@@sicilianmammalian thats a good polearm but i prefer poleaxe for my home defense.
@rafitohornero3850 musashi said to keep a short sword by your bed but you can use anything you'd use for hunting/farming relatively easy for home defense
Very unusual weapon, first time I have see it O.O
I may know some people in Japan with combat quality 14th century European armor if Seki-sensei might like to try fighting against or even wearing that style of armor.
The person who said Bat'leth was right. I'd be very curious to see Sensei try the Klingon arsenal of martial weapons. If y'all decide to do it, here's the list to look up:
bat'leth
d'k tahg
gin'tak spear
kligat
kur'leth
kut'luch
mek'leth
mevak
tajtIq
Give him a Shotel, or a Kopesh next.
I'm still hoping for a Scutum/Gladius combo, I'm sure Seki-sensei would have fun with them.
I would like to see the teacher talk to a H.E.M.A teacher that would be very cool
I would like to see Seki-sensei make sense of the Bat'leth from Star Trek. 😄
Cool
Darth's Maul technique!!
I also was really curious how Seki Sensei would handle the Darth Maul saber...
Most of these techniques are not possible when the other blade is like a giant acetylene torch 😅
If you ever get a chance it would be neat to see what he thinks of a Niuweidao and what strengths and weaknesses it has compared to other sworrds.
Love these videos but some of his moves are only doable in an absolute perfect scenario with perfect timing, like at 5:55 he's doing some insanely risky parries that leave almost no room for error or you will die because his distance has to be so close to the opponent.
Actually looks quite decent with a pair of gauntlets.
Now i wanna see Seki Sensei use a bat'leth.
I'd like to see what Seki Sensei could do with just a sharpened nail. 😂😂
time for the LIGHTSABER
Maul Sensei!
this video gave me nightmares of sensei using zoros three sword style
If you had reliable way to attach two sword handles pommel-to-pommel it could be quite portable.
It would take me less than a minute to mortally wound myself with that weapon.😂 Well done! ❤
That's why most of these fancy weapons (where they exist in real life) are either for show or the best of the best.
I'd like to see what he can do with a Zweihander/Montante
Nice hair style
Finally sentinel prime twin bladed sword.
You know a weapon is impractical when a skilled grandmaster consider it awkward to use.
Now a double bladed lightsaber. Without touching the blades😂
Isn't there a Chinese weapon known as a cicada wing sword that is like a twin blade sword with extra handguards?
Now I'm curious, are there more moon like themed kamae/kata
The handle being longer would make this weapon more functional. Not much sword is needed to be leathal as shown by spears and polearms.
I wonder how seki sensei would use an extremely curved one handed sword, like a Persian shamshir, or Turkish kilij.
the villain in the 2013 movie, "Ninja: Shadow of a Tear" actually used such a weapon in the final fight. Maybe not realistic but it does show it is possible.
