Today that our family dog is dying, I have realized I have not given myself any opportunity to FEEL my emotions since childhood. She is a Golden Retriever who had the most beautiful character. Always forgiving, always there for us. Now I realize I have been numb to my feelings to avoid hurting. 😬
What I wouldn’t give to grab this book and go back in time 25 years. I was raised in an “emotions are bad” family, where strong feelings were punished, and always from a Christian perspective. I honestly had no idea my parents were completely wrong about that, and although I tried to do better with my own kids, I still didn’t trust emotions. I am now trying to teach my kids that feelings aren’t wrong, but I’m afraid it’s too late.
A lot of US were of that “ generation “ that got emotionally neglected & abandoned BC of that exact reason bc of faulty belief systems reinforced by cultural environments: “ the belief system that are emotions are bad and/or scary… therefore unacceptable to be expressed or shared. “
