- Chinatown is the 1974 Neo Noir film directed by Roman Polanski. Considered one of the greatest films of all time. This one actually happens to be one of my all time favorite films. Today we are going to review the movie and its NEW Paramount presents 4k Blu ray!

I'm thinking the Blu-ray is better in places, and the embossed slipcover with the original artwork is better than this release, but of course you do get a free sequel to boot in the 4K release...
The blu ray I like the color more on it. It was cooler and they warmed this one up. But it is sharper and has more detail. It’s not the biggest jump for sure. It was nice to throw in the sequel though. They didn’t have to do that.
Just got mine tonight! Can't wait to watch it, as it'll be a first time watch.

THE TWO JAKES bluray looks flawless compared to the CHINATOWN 4K.
Too bad it’s a bad film lol.
My question is: I own Chinatown 4K for streaming. Is the new 4K Blu-Ray version worth buying? Is it much better?
If you already have it on streaming and it’s on 4K and your happy the. you don’t need to grab this one. I’ll always say physical is better and it will be but if you’re happy then there’s no reason to for that price!
Nice review! This is also an all timer for me but I'm waiting on price to come down as I find Paramount over charges for their packaging (which I find pretty underwhelming quality wise). I was more or less expecting the video quality on this 4k to be just a minor improvement. This was shot anamorphic in scope, which is beautiful, but usually ends up being softer visually than other formats. You cant squeeze blood from a stone. On top of that, the old blu ray was really quite good for that format and upscales very well. I dont mind the 5.1 but the mono sounds punchier. The piano chords sound more dangerous on that track, which is an important aspect of the score. Glad its better than OUATITW! That disc is a disappointment overall, even though I get it has some improvements over the past release. A 4k should not have digital artifacts and frozen grain in the sky. I know were spoiled these days but as its likely the last release were getting Im bummed. Just thinking what Arrow could have done with that makes me cry!

I’m not a huge fan of them warming up these movies but overall it is an improvement and I agree with you the previous blu ray was good. So even though it’s not the biggest quality jump it’s still a jump. I agree about the packaging too it can seem cheap especially with the materials. Arrow I think would of put a lot of the Paramount releases to shame lol
As a general rule, I’m not going to watch any Roman Polanski film
But! Back to the future is playing tonight for “tightwad Thursday” ($5 tickets!)

Later I learned who directed it so I haven’t seen it in a long time,
But anyone who isn’t opposed, should watch it, it’s good and not talked about a lot
@lordrayden3045 Yeah , I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to watch a movie because of who directed or who’s in it. It all comes down to the person though. Some I can’t wait while others I can.
Finished watching the 4k and how can THE GODFATHER PT. 2 4K not have the quality issues of CHINATOWN since they are both from 1974? This 4k was a total letdown. Like 25% of the transfer looks like 4k quality and the rest looks like PLANES. TRAINS & AUTOMOBLIE 4k quality. My pick for 2024 bad 4k of the Year!
That’s a bold statement! I have to respectfully disagree though. While not an award winning 4K by no means I can’t say it’s a bad 4K. Technically there’s no issues other then warming it up which yes changes the visuals slightly and even I would prefer the cooler look of the blu ray. It’s still much sharper and did clean up some of the softer shots. Also Godfather 2 and Chinatown always looked like different films and I would say Godfather 2 actually made some changes to make the 4K transfer look the way it (Changes I love by the way) While I think this was trying to stay faithful to the film itself which is a naturally dark film.
@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia It looks like two different people worked on the 4k and each one did their own thing. The opening of the movie the quality sucks and then it turns good quality for a while.
@ricogomez4020 It’s not perfect but I didn’t think it was bad by no means. I noticed the darkness but this isn’t anything new. Forest Gump has a similar darkness and I really don’t think it worked on that 4K. I do think there is room for improvement but I wasn’t let down. If anything I was more upset they didn’t even give us any new audio lol
