As a Tongan descent who lives in the states..... these videos are an absolute gem. I don't know much about the royal family. So videos like these help me learn about them. I want to share videos like this one with my children so they can learn about the royal family and be proud of their heritage. Great job!
The Protocol is very similar to my country, Myanmar, a country in the maindland South East Asia. We are not supposed to look at the faces of royals unless they tell so. We have to take off the shoes before going to their presence ( the Anglo-Myanmar war occurred partly coz the British Imperial diplomats refused to take off their shoes in front of our King ). Sit lower than the royals too or crawling before their presence ( for our culture)
No offence intended but I feel like a lot of Tongan customs hinder Tonga from having greater international relationships. It’s too much fka’apa’apa, I mean for her to sit on the floor? And I always see photos of royals with people sitting on the floor next to them, it’s quite ridiculous, they are not God. Tonga is a Christian nation so I don’t understand the importance of these customs if we have the gospel. It’s so old school, like how they behaved in the tribes when the chief of the village would arrive and they all bow down. It’s like idol worship. Honestly no offence intended I just want to Tonga to prosper and be taken seriously on an international level. There’s too much paranoia about doing things the palangi way but what has keeping all these customs actually done for Tonga? The youth have no future, there are no jobs, all the food is imported and really expensive, and overseas money from relatives is the greatest source of income in the nation. What are they actually achieving can someone answer this?

It's true she wouldn't be expected to, and the Princess wouldn't have been too upset if she sat on the chair to talk to her. But the fact that she did all those things anyway as a show of respect probably endeared her to the Princess quicker than being a stuck up tourist would have. It's good when others assimilate to our culture when in Tonga, and it should be encouraged as much as possible.
