2021 Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Review | Is This All-New Motorcycle Greater Than the Sum of its Parts?

  • How high do you set your expectations before swinging a leg over a $4399 motorcycle? That depends entirely on what you're looking for. Are you an experienced rider looking for peak performance? Or are you someone looking for an entry point into motorcycling? If your goal is to simply get onto two wheels and fall in love with twisting a throttle, then take a good long look at what Royal Enfield has come out with.
    CYCLE NEWS FEATURE STORY: "One Fine Day"
    More with the Royal Enfield Meteor 350
    www.cyclenews.com/2021/05/art...
    We explore the all-new 2021 Royal Enfield Meteor 350 and tap into the basis of its appeal, which is undoubtedly its accessibility. This handsome little cruiser is the gateway-the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is the bike that will open doors for many new riders. It is an ideal entry-level motorcycle that is affordable and accessible in terms of its size, power, weight, and how easy it is to ride. But don't write it off as a budget model, or an afterthought from a company more interested in high-dollar items. The crew at Royal Enfield put a great deal of time and thought into the design of the all-new Meteor 350 and its three different trim levels: Fireball: $4399; Stellar: $4499; Supernova $4599.
    The Meteor 350 gets an all-new frame, all-new engine and is purpose-built from the ground up. What results is a very well executed motorcycle, wonderfully attractive with seven different color options, flowing lines, symmetry that will catch eyes and turn heads everywhere you go (and I would know. Because it did during my three weeks with the Meteor 350). You can choose from the blacked-out version (Fireball) with its matching color accents, or the chrome of the upgraded models (Stellar and Supernova) with dual-tone paint and accessory options.
    When it comes to the power of the Meteor 350, we're not talking about a whole lot of ponies here. But you already knew that. With the 350cc single-cylinder air-cooled power output that it does have, Royal Enfield created a very nice spread of power on the Meteor. The five-speed gearbox is very well thought out, and the Meteor manages to produce nice torque on the low-end, but not so much that it sacrifices top-end power. Once on the freeway you'll really feel the counterbalancer come into play, and the engine smooths out very nicely, inviting you to cruise along at 70-75mph pretty easily. I'd much prefer a windscreen for highway cruising, but I spent the majority of my time with the Meteor on back roads.
    A trip to California's Central Coast wine country in Paso Robles, home to some of the best backroads in the West, was a real treat on the Meteor 350! Cruising in and out of turns, flowing along on a ribbon of pavement as it dips in and out of oak tree tunnels, past vineyards and ranches, was exactly what the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 was designed to do. It's not built for punching in and out of turns with hard accelerating and hard braking. But when you sit back into the low seat and let the Meteor rock back and forth through the turns, you'll find its sweet spot. The light weight and low center of gravity make it so light on its feet, and it will just glide along with a silky smooth flow. That is... until you hit any big bumps.
    Suspension action could be softer on the Meteor 350. I feel like Royal Enfield missed the mark on the initial comfort level with both the suspension and the seat. Neither is very supple, which can be a really big turn-off to beginner riders. If you want people to love it, you HAVE to make them comfortable. Perhaps it will break in-and in fact, I did feel a difference in the suspension from my first ride to my last, but it's that initial impression that you won't get a second chance to make with new riders. Cushy seats, Enfield! And a more plush ride with better bump absorption that won't kick lightweight riders (women!) up out of the seat.
    The most impressive part to me, and an unexpected touch, is the Tripper Navigation. The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 actually has a built-in dial for GPS with turn-by-turn navigation. This is extremely nice to have in this day and age, since we've learned to function by our phones (like it or not). You simply download the Royal Enfield app, which is built on the Google platform, punch in your destination and let the Meteor guide you to your destination. Pretty dang cool, especially on a sub-$5000 motorcycle.

    All reviews I've seen said the same thing: this is a bike for a first ride. I've also seen others videos and the negative point is always its maximum speed, but to someone who is starting at the motorcycle world the top speed isn't the goal.
    Thanks for your review and greetings from Brazil.

    I'm still waiting for the Meteor here in Belgium.
    After 35 years of motorcycling, I'm looking for something really cool and comfortable.
    I am surprised that you are complaining about the comfort of the saddle and the suspension because according to the Indian tests they put the comfort of this bike in the foreground, so that scares me a little ...
    As soon as it will be available in Belgium, I will test it and I will also look for the comfort saddle option.
    Thank you for the test and the feedback.

    • @CrossRutted
      @CrossRutted  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The bike is comfortable, for sure. In terms of riding position, ergonomics, the ride itself... it's only the bigger hits that were unexpectedly jarring. It seems like the suspension is just too stiff for me (I'm about 150 lb). As for the seat, the shape is really nice, and I thought it would be as cushy as the Himalayan seat, but it's not. At least not the Fireball seat. I haven't sampled the Stellar of the Supernova, which have upgraded seats.
      Thanks!

      in the same boat waiting for one to demo. I cant understand why a bike like this hasnt been made before.Its no nonsense, stylish, very well priced, simple, comfortable, powerful enough for the majority of people. can see them flying out of the dealerships. there's just nothing else in this segment and they've done a good job of capitalising on that. Ive just sold my brutally heavy and uncomfortable honda shadow 750 which handles like a bag of bricks, before that a ninja 300 which i tried my best to kill myself on, and before that a 125 crusier that couldnt keep up with traffic unless i revved the nuts off it. this is a perfect middle ground

    Very accurate video on this bike- well done! I own the bike in California. ( one test ride and i took it home) Good linear acceleration comfortable ergonomics soft suspension over bumps. Love the round cylinder head- very sexy. the heel toe shifter option on it is a classy touch- easy to use. Not sure whether ride it or just pull up a chair and stare at it. To your point- 1-4 gears are very usable around town with good spacing and the fifth gear is an actual overdrive for the highway. I put little 8 inch tubular fork bag on the rear seat grab handle - very functional and looks good. Glad they gave us the wheel pinstriping -nice touch. Happy rid’n!! Allan Califonia

Excellent handling especially responsive to counter steering. Very comfortable riding position but like you I don't get on well with the seat. Using an old foam/gel pad at this time to make it bearable. It's a fun city and back road bike to just chill out and enjoy. Outstanding fuel economy! First tank ran 95 mpg(US gallon). Looking forward to more from you.

    People wouldn't agree with me, but I would compare this against Harley Davidson Iron 883. The Meteor lacks the 883's bigger engine, price and noise, but shares relaxed riding experience. It's a good for someone who doesn't demand performance. Now, in Canada, prices are much higher than US. It's not a deal at all.

    Wow, great review: clear, thorough, insightful, and I love that you started with a story about your first bike! My first bike was a 1962 Honda 150 that I bought the day I turned 15-1/2 (in 1968) and I've been riding ever since (though not on my first bike!). I've had many bikes (including a Victory Kingpin and a Triumph Bonnie right now), but the RE Meteor has *really* piqued my interest. Your review is among the best I've watched, and I'm happy to become a subscriber. (It's also nice that you seem to be based on the Central Coast of my home state!) Keep up the great work! [EDIT: On closer reading, I guess you may not actually be *based* on the Central Coast, but even if not, props for choosing it as a testing ground! Also, having test-ridden a Meteor just this morning, I agree with you that this is a good entry-level bike; but I also feel that it has potentially strong appeal for us older riders who no longer want to wrestle with heavy cruisers or touring bikes and would like to return to something light, simple, and fun, just like we rode, well, 50 years ago!] :-)

    Excellent assessment, just got mine in September and first bike to constantly put-a-smile-on-me-face! Some of your filming looks similar to UK, what State could be like that and don't say New England!

    Very cool review!
    Here in the West, people have become obsessed with having the biggest, most powerful and flashy bike. We seem to have forgotten that bikes are all about "getting out there", feeling the wind, the rumble of the engine, seeing and smelling your surroundings and just being alive in the purest way. It's bikes like the Meteor who still tap into that original energy, and I hope more riders will experience that raw feeling once again.

    • @CrossRutted
      @CrossRutted  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I couldn't agree more. It's not always about peak performance and big horsepower. Let's remember the spirit of the ride for a moment. Here's a link to another feature article I did from our weekend in Paso Robles, where we shot most of this video.

    GREAT VIDEO! Nice music. And of course great review. I have similar feelings about how well they designed Interceptor 650, especially the consistent torque curve through all gears. Glad you were honest about the seat. I wish RE made the Touring seat standard on the INT 650. Thanks for highlighting Royal Enfield's skill in designing and attention to detail. Again, great video.

      I have yet to ride the Interceptor 650 but I hope to someday. And yes, the design and attention to detail on the Meteor 350 speaks for itself. RE did a wonderful job. Thank you for the kind words!

    Excellent review, maybe a technical specs vid next? Something to bear in mind is that RE are aiming products at a global market and that in many parts of the world this bike represents a mid-size, affordable package that is practical enough for everyday use. I predict great success for RE with this bike

    • @CrossRutted
      @CrossRutted  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Andy, and thank you!
      Couple reasons I didn't dive into technical specs, the foremost being that this bike isn't about outright performance. The deeper you dive into specs, the more you'll miss the big picture, which is the accessibility factor, in my opinion. So that was my focus here. The other reason is because every other review out there will dig into the technical figures. My goal is always to showcase who this bike is for, rather than is it good or bad. My goal here was to paint the picture of the sheer joy of riding a motorcycle (hopefully to women riders!) and show the Meteor 350 for what it does best - open doors to the freedom of the open road.
      Thanks again!

    I think over the hill seniors like me also will enjoy such a motorcycle. I've been riding since the early 60's and yes I own a Harley, but I still like smaller bikes and I think old gizzers like me will enjoy riding such a bike. Sometimes a smaller bike is a lot more fun than a large heavy gizzer glider.

    Very informative video and beautiful location too. Love from India❤️ though in India we get more options in smaller capacity engine's like Suzuki Intruder 150 and Bajaj Avenger 160 but this can't be ignored so definitely worth buying.

      In the U.S. a small displacement like a 150 would not be allowed on the highway. This is probably why they are less popular here. Many places you need to go on the highway in order to get around--especially in California.

    Nice review. Good commuter, outer suburb bike that includes short trips on freeways. Power is adequate and single cylinder should mean low maintenance costs. I’d add a screen and a large top box on the back - I don’t need a pillion seat.

    That was a good review, but as a Meteor 350 owner myself, I have a bone to pick with you: it's not just a beginner's bike or a lady's bike. I owned 10-11 bikes before I got my Meteor in September, including a 1999 Kawasaki ZRX1100. I've had the big, fast bikes; I've lived through that and lived to tell about it. Though I'm no Valentino Rossi, I have some experience undder m y belt. You know what? I LOVE MY METEOR! It's among the best bikes I've ever owned. To put it another way, it's helping me discover WHY I started riding in the first place...
    At my age (60 in February), I was looking for something lighter weight, easier to manage, economical, and fun. The vast majority of my rides are on local back roads for an hour or so; some trips along the river; and the occasional day trip thrown in. For the way I use a bike now, anything bigger or aster oulde SERIOUS OVERKILL! A lot of us older guys are downsizing our bikes. Not only have I downsized the bikes I ride; my neighbor did too, He used to have a Yamaha Venture, which was Yamaha's effort at making a bike to compete with the Gold Wing. He just got a Meteor 350 too...

    • @CrossRutted
      @CrossRutted  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When did I say that it's "just a beginner's bike or a lady's bike?" And secondly, why is that offensive to you?
      I'm a lady rider and very experienced, as well. I also loved riding the Meteor, and I don't find it a threat to my ego to call it an excellent beginner bike, because IT IS. 👍

    Hi Jean, thanks for the video, got to know lot of details. I am looking to buy beginner bike, unfortunately Meteor is back ordered till Fall here in east coast. Wanted to know if this Bike can keep up on the freeway? Also, when compared to Rebel and Vulcan, how is this better? Thanks.

    • @CrossRutted
      @CrossRutted  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Venkata. Sorry for the late reply. The Meteor can cruise on the freeway about 70, but without much wind protection (at least not the Fireball like I had), it's not the ideal place to be. I found it much more comfortable on back roads and cruising through town. I can't really compare it to the Rebel or the Vulcan as I haven't ridden either of those recently. Although that would be a very interesting comparison... 😊
