The Original Yamaha MT03: The Best Used A2 Licence Motorcycle? An Owner's Thoughts

  • In January of 2013, an unloved model from Yamaha which never really had a home in the market suddenly finds its home. Does this motorcycle that coincidentally has the perfect amount of power for the A2 licence now make one of the best used bikes you can buy? If, like me, you don't want to splash the cash on a finance package or have to deal with the faff of having a restrictor kit fitted by an authorised person, you may find this fits the bill perfectly.
    This is not a review of the bike, that's for the experts to do what they do best. This is just my thoughts on my motorcycle in regards to the A2 licence orientated rider having lived with it for about 15 months after moving up from a 125cc. I hope you find it helpful!

    I have a 2007 model with 26,000 miles. I commute across London every day on it through all weathers and road conditions. For less than £2000 i think you'll struggle to find a better bike, particularly in the A2 category. It's very reliable (in my experience so far) and easy/fun to ride and work on. I also like that I don't have to worry too much about it getting knicked or scratched. It's punchy engine is great in urban environments but it is also capable of cruising on the motorway at 75mph quite happily. All in all its a great no frills motorcycle for getting the job done and having a good time in the process.

      Yup, all rather agreeable though no frills is arguable, it's easily hoonable and more than capable of corner quickness! Just does get overwhelmed eventually with its softer setup and weight disadvantage. It's been a few years since I've had this bike now and out of wonderment of wondering about their price, they're still going down meaning even better value!

    I've been riding for over 30 years and can honestly say you can have more fun on this bike than 90% of other machines. I've owned too many bikes to mention but when i had an MT03, i also had a Yam FZ1n and a Honda VFR800 and 9 times out of 10 i'd choose the Mt03.. And the fun factor goes up massively with some baffle-free after market cans fitted.

      Indeed, definitely a good fun bike! If I was in the market for this sort of bike again, id look towards a Duke 690. Same ethos but a bit better sprung...

      They're the removable inserts in the exhausts that increase volume once removed. Can be easily put back in to reduce volume if desired.

    Came back to this video for the memories. My early A2 bikes basically followed yours (MT03 and Shiver), I was going to get the Tuono as well but at the time I was looking, my new job had vehicle loans and we have since split paths.
    My MT03 and Aprilia are still sitting in my garage. I need to get them sorted, MT03 has the dash issue probably a loose connector somewhere, the Aprilia was serviced fully before being put away but the breaks have locked up so need to sort that. But when you have another bike and these are not insured you kinda forget about them. I still want to turn the MT03 into some kinda off-road bobber thing. The engine is unique in today's world although singles can still be found.
    Now on a KTM Superduke GT and will probably never get more than 2 cylinders, I love torque too much.

      Sound like they should be minor issues to fix, have at it! Make the bobber! And yeah, I'm the same in I've only ever had singles and V twins. By all means, if something I want appears that's a 3 or 4 cylinder I'd want, it go for it. Right now, the wait continues...

    A good review... well done mate. Watched some of your other stuff too.
    I am planning another foray into motorcycling after a 25 year lay off and as my last bike was a big single (Honda XL600LM) I have been checking out what big singles are available (limited choice these days). With regards to your comments about long distance comfort I would have to say that the world has gone soft (ha ha)! Great videos... keep them coming!!

    Awesome mate. Really enjoyed this despite already having the full monty! As I said to you before, I even considered an MT-03 when I got the Versys. Horribly overpriced new, but very reasonable and capable old! Like me! :D

    Nice video, I'm going the other way due to my age, old injuries & location (West Wales). Just sold my 260kgs BMW Tourer which had sat little used & awaiting delivery of a Derbi Mulhacen 659 Cafe. Same motor just a bit funkier & nearly 30kgs lighter than the MT. Looking forward to it arriving next week, a bit of tinkering/mot & then i'll be blatting down the tiny lanes of Wales.

      Great choice! And a rare find given there's only 60 odd in the UK. Having just done a USA tour on a near 300kg BMW tourer, I now appreciate the importance of mass even more so. All the best!

    The big brain move would be to buy the Aprilia Pegaso 650 Strada instead. It has the same engine, gearbox, and electronics, but has upgraded suspension and Brembo brakes as stock, a dash from the RSV line at the time, Aluminium wheels - and to top it off it only weighs 170kg, and it's cheaper as well. Idk how they did it, but they passed Yamaha straight on the inside with that bike.
    I owned mine for over 3 years, dailied it in rain and snow (in Denmark), and it never missed a beat. That engine is unkillable, as well as the electronics.

      Good to hear you found a bike you like! Agreed, the Pegaso Strada is a good alternative (assuming you like the styling and more upright adventure bike ergos) but there are a couple points for me to add. Weight is very close with the Pegaso less than 5kg lighter (according to motorcyclespecs.co.nz). Whilst the MT doesn't claim to use posh items like high performing brakes, alu wheels etc, what it has are all still very good and often are high spec parts including light wheels. But perhaps most importantly is the power. The Pegaso has a few more HP/KW meaning it's shown as a bike in need of restriction for A2 use. Whilst I'm sure there are work arounds, done correctly it's an extra spend!

      @@LammyIOW The last point isn't true actually, since it's officially registered with the same engine specs, it is still A2 compliant from factory (that was the entire reason I got it myself). It is officially registered with the 35kw tune, but unofficially it has the higher spec tune provided from Aprilia. No restrictions are needed. All Euro countries regard it as a full A2 compliant bike.
      Also, for some reason every single website notoriously list wrong information about the Pegaso Strada, even motorcyclespecs.co.nz, which I'm a fan of. Most of them give wrong wheel size (often they list the Trail sizes of 100 front 130 rear, which are not the same on the Strada), also weight and power are often listed wrong as well. To my knowledge Aprilia hasn't provided any official curb weights for the bike. I've even seen websites on the 1st google page say it has a twin cylinder engine haha. I know the 168kg dry weight is quite accurate, it's comparable with a 600 supersport bike, but a lot of the weight saving on wheels really help the bike lean into corners much better than the MT-03 as well as the MT-07 which I also have experience with. From riding both, the Pegaso feels lighter and more agile to ride (also it's fuel tank design puts the center of gravity lower). Some of it might also just be due to the suspension setup and geometry, it doesn't really feel like an adventure riding position since you can easily change your seating position due to the longer seat, and the handlebars still allow you to get into a quite aggressive position. The main "adventure" aspect is that your legs aren't as bent as on other common street bikes.
      But either way, both are great value for money on the used market, especially compared to almost every other A2 friendly bike. I just find it curious that so few people realize the Pegaso bargain for what it offers

      Very odd, the official UK government list for bikes suitable for A2 test states the Pegaso must be restricted and the MT03 does not! The official method for verifying must change slightly between our countries.
      Perhaps I best have a proper go on a Pegaso before I pass further comment about it, there's only so much a spec sheet can tell me! I suspect people shy away from Aprilia because of the false reliability stereotypes of an 'italian bike' but also because parts and service access is lesser than Yamaha. Even if the parts are shared and easy to get, those less informed can be immidiatly put off by the name Aprilia. I'm not, I had an Aprilia as my next bike for over 3 years!

      @@LammyIOW That is true, I do not personally know if UK is using some country-specific measurements for A2. Both in Scandinavia, Germany, France, Italy, and other south-european countries the Pegaso is A2 legal.
      Yes the Italian stereotypes are definitely hurting Aprilia, even though between those with experience they are often regarded as the "Italian Honda" in terms of build quality. And yea as you say, many of the engine components are shared with multiple Yamaha bikes, so a lot of the common Italian issues are void, and any mechanic can easily service the bike.
      It would be interesting to see how you find riding the Pegaso, if you ever get the chance. You're probably gonna find it quite similar in many areas to the MT-03. To me, it's the subtle changes like a bit of extra responsiveness and the suspension/handling in high pace riding that sets it apart the most.

      I can certainly vouch for Aprilia reliability, myself and my friends who owned one never had anything bad to say about them!
      I'll have a look towards the start of next year at if I can find any Pegasos to try. Certainly more difficult to find than a MT, there are 4x the amount of MT03 660s vs Pegaso Strada in the UK!

      Thanks very much! The hand guards came with the bike, they are KTM official ones which attach via clamping on the handle bar and to the bar end. The screen is the official Yamaha accessory which came up on gumtree one day. Best way to find one is on eBay. Hope this is useful, but feel free to ask furthermore 👍

      True, though I think the KTM has the more flat bar, short front end about it that the MT has. And of course, big single is a rather unique characteristic that's hard to replicate!

    I'm just glad I'm an old git and spent 30 or 40 minutes riding round and round the block with an examiner at the side of the road with a clip board in 1975. This has enabled me to legally ride any bike, and a three wheeler car, ever since! They didn't even have CBT then, I rode my first bike out of the showroom and learned to ride it on the way home.

      LammyIOW back then the Laverda Jota 1l triple bike was the fastest you could get and that only had 90bhp. Still enough to give you serious issues though!

      While not old enough to get away with that, I am old enough to have only needed 1 test to pass and a 2 year restriction to 50bhp bikes. Then I could ride anything I wanted to!

    Come A2 think i'll grab a 2013ish cbr500r if I can. You still rocking the ixon gear? I know the gear is now discontinued but picked some up on sale 2 piece ixon fueller gear. So far love them, what you reckon of them from your time using them>

      A CBR500 seems a decent choice as they appear to be holding their value rather well. The only ixon gear I have is the fueller jacket, rest of my stuff I'd generally a mix of brands. But I've used it now for probably about 2 years and I've found no major complaints so far! Maybe the only thing I'd mention is a larger centre zip may be nice, but that's just nitpicking...

    What is your opinion on the Dorsoduro (as an A2 bike)? I'd like something with character but also something that can cope with traveling at 60/70mph all day.
    I've still got just under 1 year to wait before I can do my test but I'm just looking around!

      It is a viable option that then gives you a decent bike after you have gained a full licence. I've only been on the Dorsoduro 1200 which by golly was 'f**k me' fast. It'll certainly be able to do motorway riding, just has a small tank is all. And whether or not you can be comfortable with no faring at speed for prolonged periods.

      As you mentioned I'd probably be able to handle the wind as I'm used to it on my 125. I know there will be a difference in speed but I'm sure I could fit a screen if needed.
      I've briefly looked into the Pegaso aswell which I believe uses the same engine as the mt03.

      Yeah the 660cc engine has found its home in many bikes: Aprilia Pegaso, Derbi Mulhacen, MX Baghira, the list goes on. And yeah, I'm sure wind protection ought to be fine... he says 😋

    what is easier to drive, this one, or 2007 er6n, or maybe older cbf500? (i got full A license, but find it difficult to ride on a bigger bikes)

      Twins are generally seen as more user friendly with a more predictable a linear throttle response vs a single. But this is a more lazy single, so go jump on a few bikes and try!

      Haven't tried it yet but is very much the same principle, 1 big piston, short flickable frame all in an upright riding position. If I get the opportunity I'll try one 👍

      Vs the new MT03, Duke wins. Vs this MT03, depends what you look for in a motorcycle. Initial torque, real chunky big bike feel and higher speed cruising capability, MT. More cornering capability, a smoother engine (I don't necessarily mean that as a better thing) and the appeal for many of a younger bike, Duke.

      Hmm, you should be fine as it is quite a low seat. Although this is a difficult question for me to answer as I can flat foot a BMW GS!

      Ok, the R125 has a 20mm taller seat, so the mt03 should be ok as its seat also hardly any wider. Best way though is to sit on one!

    the problem is the price with these, for a decent example with 5-10k miles you're looking at £3kish you can go buy last years duke 390 for 3.5k with 500-1500 miles. heck you can get a 2016 duke for 3750 without a single mile on the clock and is like 40-50kg lighter. both look very nice i just think because the duke 390 is still in production its the smarter choice. (new parts still produced, and they have loads of bits of and bops to add on if you're into that.)

      Yup, the KTM is a viable option, and so long as you fit it (I don't seem to) and afford it then why not. Regarding parts etc, there's no issues getting them for the mt. Yamaha still make and stock all parts at regular prices and available at any dealer etc, like a new bike is. Having double the torque is quite tasty too... 😋

      i rode duke 390 and owned this bike for 2 years. owned a ninja 300, mt07, rode a dozen other bikes including several A2 bikes, a fireblade etc. in total covered 30,000km+ in the last 3 years and riding for about 4 years total now.
      this bike is really worth the money. if i had to do the A2 journey again, i wouldn't sell it. in fact the 2k i paid for it, it was a huge bargain. it wasn't a restricted bigger bike, it didn't lack guts for its low power (the torque is amazing). and at 2k i never gave a sh*t parking it anywhere or worrying it will get scratched, stolen etc. thats a huge thing for bike ownership. crashed it on gravel once and dropped it a couple times and never had any damage. just a couple scratches that were hidden with its age.

      2008 model and the grips were fitted straight onto the battery terminals. Easy as they're the ones that turn themselves off. 👍

    I am currently 16 so was doing some research ahead of time for when i'm 17 and i planned on getting a DT125 but reading the law that came in in 2013 it says you are only allowed something like 14hp with a full license at 17 but the dt makes 17hp so i would need to wait until i had an A2 to be able to ride it right?

      Legally, the law always stated even before the new licence regulations that a learner ride of 17years or older is restricted to 125cc and about 15bhp. For many years, 2stroke 125cc learner legal bikes were sold restricted as they generally make too much power. So in theory a DT125 can be legally ridden used on a full A1 licence or as a learner bike assuming it is has not been derestricted. The absolute best way to check is to contact an insurance company as they will tell you of any specific requirements they need in order to insure you on a DT125 at 17years old.

      Someone who is currently in your situation is 2Stroke Squashie. He is a 125cc rider who rides 2 stroke models on the road which have potential power figures above 15bhp. You can ask him about his experiences and how he finds it; search for him on youtube and twitter. But truthfully, the amount of 2 stroke 125cc riders I've seen with no restriction heavily outweighs the amount with the correct restriction, most likely because it seems most people including police, insurers etc don't seem to know the legal details 100%!

      Im not too worried about being illegal i ride an aprilia sx and am about to put a 70 on it aslong as i dont do anything stupid ill be fine i was just curious because it didnt specify you could ride restricted 125's whereas it did with bigger bikes

      As long as it's registered as a 125 you should be able to get insured on it. It is upto you whether you want to declare your mods but you have to accept the risk...

      The one's on the side? They are the official Yamaha one's when the model came out. Alas, very hard to come by. The axle ones? They are some skateboard wheels and a length of threaded rod!

    Can you tell me please how much rpm your MT have in the 5 Gear by 120 km/h ?! My MT is over 6.000 rpm by only 120 jm/h! !🙄 I think this is too much?!

      I think it used to be 5000rpm at 120kph. Sounds like your bike may have had some gearing changes. Check the number of teeth vs the original spec...

      @@LammyIOW i think the Problem is the wrong Oil clasification!!🙈 I used the Motul 7100 10-60 ! This is Full synthetic! But i mean thats can be negative for the clatch? It needs Half Synthetic 10-40 ?

      Clutch slip will not lead to consistent over revving. Clutch slip can be detected by the bike over revving irratically and not accelerating when applying throttle. Oil weight should not make a difference, the additives do. But if it's JASO MA2 marked, that's fine for wet clutches

      @@LammyIOW today i try when the motor was a little bit colder...140 km/h by 6.000 rpm .. after i drive a longer time and the motor have a higher temperature it was a different drive!! By 6.000 RPM only 130 km/h 🤔

      Chalk and cheese really. Depends if one likes the strum of a 4 vs the thock of a single. And it really is down to so called character when the A2 restricts the output allowed. Basically, it's me being polite and saying would much rather have the peppy single than just another inline 4 commuter hack!

    Oooor, you just get something like an older sv650, restrict it and save HEAPS of money AND you dont have to spend money on a new bike once you get your A license :)

      Buuuuuut an SV650 is a more expensive bike. An average 2008 Mt with 10k miles, ~£2.6k, equivalent SV, over £3k. Add an licensed restrictor and thats gonna be a chunk less value vs this for the same thing. And come derestriction time, an extra 20hp is going to feel very underwhelming vs the triple power increase most would experience from a 125 to an A2 bike... ;-)

      Decent bit of kit but if your looking at SVs, probably means your not looking for the same things in a bike vs the MT. MT is a better back lane fun bike with a big single for the compactness and low speed enjoyment that brings, not to mention the SV needs extra dough spent or restricting. And I know which one I'd chose for the style and appeal factor rather than the image of a normal stepping stone bike that gets lost in the crowd...

    A2 license? LOL! In the United States I can ride a CBR1000RR while I only have a permit from a written test. Even if you're 16 years old. We only have 1 motorcycle endorsement, which is shown on your regular driver's license. They really treat you guys like children don't they?

      pretty sure there are quite a few more motorcycle deaths in the US, so im kinda glad we have stricter laws. the gov noticed more people were dying so they actually made changes

      @@circleworks1510 Pretty sure there are less deaths per person, per year in the USA, since less percentage of people here ride motorcycles due to cheaper fuel prices. There should be more total, as our country has a MUCH higher population. It's just like when people compared COVID-19 deaths in the USA versus Italy, which had a much higher percentage of people infected, but has a much lower number of people infected than the USA, due to it's substantially smaller population.

      @@tcolondovich2996 first of all there are numerous variables. Yes fuel prices are cheaper, but the US is bigger so people have to travel longer distances and i believe it actually ends up working out to be similar costings for journeys. second, logic dictates, that since your driving tests are easier, motorcycle tests are easier and a 16 year old can ride a 1litre bike just on a permit, that risk of death on a motorcycle, especially for the inexperienced children is significantly higher (we've seen from past events that the US isn't too bothered about changing laws to stop children dying) compared to the uk where we can only ride a 125cc after completing a cbt, an A2 licence at 19 which is 47hp limit or full A licence at 21 which is derestricted. or if you dont go progressively the direct access test is at 24. the Gov put these laws into place to protect children since they noticed too many injuries or crashes with new riders.Also did you see my MT03 comment?

      @@circleworks1510 You're probably right with most aspects of your comment above. It's very interesting how we allow liter bikes to be ridden by a first time rider here, if we are at all concerned about the deaths due to inexperience. Most people travel by motorcycle very little in a year, and most trips I take are 10-20 minutes each direction at freeway speeds. So I'm not sure I agree about distance travelled on average being higher. Most long distance trips (900 miles or 1450km between Minnesota and Colorado for example,) are driven by car, especially for the 1/2 of the year we have snow on the ground. The average $4000 used bike has only 3,000-6,000 miles on it, or 4800-9600km.) How many miles would you see on the average bike for $4000 in the UK?
      Yes, I saw your comment on the MT-03. Interesting how some people think they only were only made with a 600 something CC. I only looked at the last 2 generations (2020-2022, 2016-2019.) Both of those generations are 321CC for sure. The other guy arguing with me insisted on name calling instead of looking any information up, citing sources, model years, etc.
      I appreciate your well thought out replies, as many people seem incapable of logical thought, or a default level of respect for strangers.
