I'm a female, and whether it's a slashy, cheese-filled gorefest or an intellectual, deconstructed, horror film, the fact that a final girl exists in a world is what first got me into the horror genre. Sure, some horror does exploit women, but it also elevates them to the master of their own fates. Nancy in Nightmare on Elm Street showed me that movies can present a teenage girl who is clever, smart, brave and proactive.
Ready or Not is a good recent example too. Horror is the genre where a woman’s intelligence and independence are rewarded the most in media. As a woman, who enjoys horror because of the complicated themes it tackles- her take was wildly out of touch.
I noticed that final girls exist in a horror game genre, as well. More specifically RPG-Maker Horror Games. Most of the main characters of these games are young girls, or older female teens.
I don't think she realizes that horror fans do in fact watch nice things sometimes. I like gorey horror movies and cute plushies. You can have multiple interests.
I’ve heard the “why can’t you watch something nice” question more than once. It got old when I was a kid, and it’s still old. It presupposes that what they like is nice and what I like is not. It’s a shame tactic. It didn’t work then, and it isn’t going to work now.
This hits the nail on the head. Sometimes it’s people with good intentions but people with a superiority complex people say that same sentence. Horror challenges us the audience but while it does we’re reassured that it’s not real and no one’s getting hurt that’s what I love about horror moves. Another pet peeve of mine is when the audience is given a warning before the movie starts. People sometimes or most of the time over dramatize things and say: Don’t watch the movie! It’s too gory! It’s Demonic and evil! This movie will put a curse on You Like people were adults now we should know by now that horror movies aren’t real. The blood isn’t real and no one’s really getting harmed. But anyways that’s my side rant lol 😆 🖤
Exactly, like forgive me for not letting you witness me puke during a hallmark special first. If horror is wrong because its not saccharine, then I don't want to be right. 🖤💜💙💚💙💜🖤 Much Love!!
Plus, they act like we only watch horror films. People are capable of watching different things, but it's halloween time, so we enjoy them a bit more this time year.
@@BitestheStuff Lots of people like my sister only ever watch Horror movies. They're the favorite genre of everyone in my friends and family group, but we go to other stuff like Sci-fi, Rom-com, Comedy, Drama, Mystery, etc. Halloween helps for us (since our dad was born on Halloween and our mom was born on Day of the Dead) but for us Halloween is everyday (especially in my house where decor just stays up all year long).
this is so specific, I think a guy she liked invited her over and put on a horror movie and she was soooo pissed and decided to make it everyone else's problem
Omg flashback I remember *vividly* being a complete dumbass. Staying over my girlfriend’s dorm for the first time..we weren’t even dating yet😂. She’s like wanna watch something .?? I’m like..I know ..Hellraiser 2 it’s SO good!!😂😂. It’s been years..I brought that up the other day she’s like “yeah that was some weird shit but a good movie..and it’s ok I still love you 🥰 😂”
Horror movies also allowed for exploration of themes Hollywood thought would be controversial, such as having a black main character or exploring queer themes
Being objectively mad about someones personal, subjective interests is one of my biggest pet peeves. Reminds me of bill mahr making fun of anyone who reads comics or likes the movies based on them. Its childish to be emotionally affected by a strangers personal interests or style.
"Hold My Tongue" is assuming that an interest in horror content reflects a destructive, violent nature because only such a nature would find such material appealing. The entire perspective is that human interests are didactic and reflective, which is a type of symmetrical projection onto reality; it's indicative of a mind that can't conceive of asymmetrical or incongruous phenomena and is both unaware and unwilling to consider.
My wife’s favorite movie has been Hellraiser since she was 6 years old (raised by her grandparents and heavily unsupervised). I was afraid of Chucky, some Michael Jackson videos and animatronics. She calls me a pussy all the time. She’s so cool
This comment unlocked a core memory of that Michael Jackson video for Speed Demon that's claymation that scared the shit out of me as a kid. So... thanks?
As a woman..I love hellraiser too but evil dead is my fav. I Watch rewatch those. My subs are all esoteric and my sisters too. So I don't understand what that person was about.
I have fond memories (and old home video tapes from the late 80s/early 90s I need to transpose into digital films) of my dad dressing as Pinhead for Halloween (his birthday so even cooler!) and me being 3 and my middle sister 2 (youngest wasn't born at the time we started doing this but he ended the tradition once he got too blind to walk without his glasses and she was sadly too young to remember it) and us trick or treating down the road with mom filming us and dad just walking normally and scaring everyone. He had cool FX makeup on that included fake skin so my mom could pin on real pins. It was awesome.
Once you start thinking of the monsters as something like "your dad in a costume" (as we were taught from ages 2/3 and up so our parents could watch horror movies and we'd be with them in theaters but not scared because we were conditioned into not being afraid easily by them) you will totally find it harder to get scared. For us, we get "spooked" by scary concepts like the meshing of animals in "Colour Out of Space" or the concept of the alien in The Thing, etc. but it takes a lot to freak us out. Last movie to truly spook us all was Annihilation with the bear scene and the noise the alien makes.
Here’s what this lady doesn’t recognize, all of us, horror, fans, know that these movies are made for entertainment, and are fake. Here’s what she should be scared of, the real monsters live right in her own neighborhood. The real monsters are humanity.
it sounded like ragebait... which might be profitable in the short term, but unless u bait some brain-rot audience or utterly greedy millionaire wale that will fund ur rants, I'm not getting whats the long-term goal here. These people forget we now count the receipts
Nah I have seen these rants in written in other sides, the purity culture of non problematic stuff is real, sure it could be ragebait but these people 100% exist Also remember there is people commiting actual crimes while filming themselves, doing stuff that are worse long term to somehow gain popularity is the bread and butter of internet
Femcels don’t exist. Any woman can get someone to kiss her at any time. It’s just about how low she is willing to lower the bar. Sex is free when you’re a woman, the only reason to put effort into being approachable or attractive is to increase the quality of the partner who will ask you to couple. Maybe you wouldn’t date her but she could definitely have lots of men who would. 🤷🏻♀️
people say "comfort movie" all the time, me included, but the real thing is the emotional catharsis. horror movies are my go to when i'm depressed or stressed or feeling any nasty feeling cause my brain is processing all the chemicals it needs to as i'm immersed in the scary/gory movie. it's a form of emotional regulation. i argue that people who watch horror movies like that, all my homies do, are better functioning humans than normies who are unable to confront any dark feel they have or witness in the world. been talking to my buddy a lot about it cause she just finished mortuary school and we're all very proud of her but people are very judgmental. everyone has their own reasons for liking the genre they do, i love gore specifically cause of body dysmorphia, other people like slashers cause of their own trauma, it's a healthy way to cope. i loved this response to the weak willed normies.
I've noticed of late people have gotten VERY comfortable claiming people lack "media literacy" or "reading comprehension" if they just... disagree with you. IMO it's just another way of calling people, in effect, NPCs. "Everyone is a stupid mouth-breathing meat sack on autopilot except ME" behavior.
I also hate that someone sees a metaphor in something ex. Fight Club is a gay allegory. And then everyone just repeats it without making their own opinions on what the movie is saying or said. Ex. The Thing is a AIDS allegory, well that was someone's opinion but the creators didn't say that shit. It's just that an opinion and people love to repeat that shit.
@@randomlyswatching9481 I've heard Salem's Lot doesn't do the original justice. Now, Terrifier... man I love Art! Watching those videos of him in Spirit and Spencer's and such is so fun.
I'm like 90% sure that the original video is ragebait. Especially the 'comedian' thing in their bio just screams to me that they're desparete to have their 15 minutes of fame by going online and saying "popular thing BAD!!!" while pretending to be as offended as possible.
The real horror in this bad take is that she's a Mets fan. If you're a Mets fan there's something fundamentally wrong with you. Why do you like to be sad and disappointed all the time.
@@otakuinred The need to remove extreme horror could be based on the notion that the horror genre, like all genres, should be accessible to everyone of all ages because how ingrained they are in our pop culture, and the amount of blood, swearing, and nudity restricts children from watching these horror movies and are restricted to watching only animated horror movies.
i don't think anyone should do film studies (from someone who did film studies) but academic writing on movies has really given me a ton of appreciation for stuff i never "got" that wards against this kind of reactionary disgust. like linda williams' theory on body genres is such a fascinating way to contextualize how comedy, melodrama, horror and even p*rn exist on axes of emotion theme and spectatorship relative to each other. also its so wild because like... humans have used horror and fear and aversion in our creative traditions since the dawn of time. even fairy tales used to be incredibly bloody to impart moral and practical lessons for children. if we only ever consumed "nice" stories we wouldn't LEARN anything about the world
Plus horror invokes responses in people's bodies and things like adrenaline, rapid heart rate, etc. can actually feel helpful to people like me who are disabled and (in my case) don't have as much energy and such, so it's actually fun and involves the whole mind and body whenever I watch scary/fun horror movies.
Let me see...watches horror movies ✅ plays violent video games ✅ listens to metal music ✅ and plays dnd ✅. Damn I'm either really good at coving up being a crazed killer or I'm just a person into those things because it's cathodic.
I watch horror almost exclusively (not on purpose it’s just what tends to draw me in) and am the biggest non-violent/overly empathetic baby LOL. Like, I catch and release bugs that get in the house because I’d be too sad to kill them 😅 but I sure love some good practical gore effects! (: Edit: and YES I’m the same way, sad movies mess me up dude
I will admit to blubbering like a baby during movies with dog deaths and stuff. I even cry at happy moments in movies or over stuff that hits close to home. So you're not alone, my friends.
I do have unresolved trauma and am mentally ill! I also love horror! I love horror because not only does it help me explore dark topics (especially things i have trauma with) in a safe way (there have even been times where ive watched a horror movie or played a horror game to get out my negative feelings so i dont have a s/h relapse), but also sometimes horror is just fun and has cool ideas!
I personally feel like there is something wrong with someone that can't process their emotions and projects them onto other people while unconsciously justifying it. I mean, it's fair to say that we all do that to some degree, but this lady's got some unresolved issues. Lol
I hate this recent trend of clearly conservative pearl clutchers making videos on tiktok using a vague semblance of progressive aesthetics to trick people into thinking they’re delivering biting social commentary when in reality they’re spewing the same narrow minded nonsense that we’ve had to work around for decades
@@ng0249 Yeah that’s true I agree, so maybe its more like they’re accidentally adopting a certain type of vocabulary and framing without actually having anything with nuance to say
the amount of shit I hear just from existing in the world as a goth who loves horror. From hardcore christians, to "intelectual" people, to doctors, to my family. It's really alarming. And honestly I blame the moral panic and all of the censorship. It's really stupid tho.
Like how my therapist "wrote in my chart" about how I have a gothic bedroom full of "odd" decor (apparently til death do us part and art for the mental disabilities I was just diagnosed with is "odd"?) and how it's even odder that I love my Halloween decorations and just keep them up year-round; yet it's not equally odd to have decor for other holidays up year-round or for movies or my wall of band/music memorabilia/concert stubs. It's only odd if it's Halloween or goth or "weird". Not even my Alien poster or anime or video game stuff gave her pause. Shockingly she didn't even seem fazed by my D&D/Forgotten Realms/Dragon Age collection. Only the "dark" stuff...
@@oldladytrexarms If you can, get a new therapist. I'm a goth into horror while also traumatized and mentally ill, and my therapist and psychiatrist don't treat me like that. Like my interest in horror and my goth lifestyle is not a big deal other than have you seen any good movies lately? Etc. I understand it's not always easy to get a new therapist for various reasons especially if you are a minor.
this is just my personal experience but i have really terrible anxiety and i love horror. i will have an anxiety attack if i need to go to a public gathering. watching someone be stalked and killed by a monster helps so much because my fear is shifted to something intangible and harmless and it puts my fear of other people into perspective which makes it way easier to deal with. i don't give a single fuck if someone thinks i'm a terrible person for it because it has helped my life more than they could ever know.
THANK YOU. I am a nearly 70-year-old baby boomer, considered a nice guy, worked on these films and have been watching them since the age of 7. Modern society has become a hellscape in its violent disregard for individual human rights. Horror films help "gird your loins" to rationally deal with real obscenities and not panic. You ride a rollercoaster with the confidence that you will go through hell and survive it. Of course, there are cheap minded individuals who only consider the "exploitation potential". But most of these films allow you to experience fears you would never deal with (unless you seek them out) which helps most of us to confront real horrors we would never see coming. And thanks for not identifying this person. She is an insult to Andre the Giant who I've met and was also a nice guy.
Horror movies have been around for over a century, since the silent era. In a college directing class our instructor showed us Cabinet of Dr Caligari as an example of production design. I never realized how depraved this petite soft spoken woman must have been to enjoy a horror movie. She also loved Chekhov.
First horror film was actually 1896, with a lot of other shorts depicting everything from paranormal, murder, vampires, to werewolves all thru the early 1900s.
A safe place to explore fear. That's really cool. I'm pretty sure your source clip is rage bate by a comedian/troll, but it lead you to write a good essay lol.
@@futuristic.handgun if it's rage bate then this video he made in response is the funny part to a larger group of people that could tell she wasn't being ironic to get a laugh, she was being ironic to be rage inducing which then indirectly gets a laugh. Now you know.
I'm a woman who loves horror movies and almost exclusively watches them. So the idea that all horror is the same thing is bizarre and so inaccurate. He's it can be a red flag in men if they like horror movies, but usually it's a certain type of horror movie. And goes beyond just the horror genre and is more about how they talk about media than the media itself. Like if it's a movie with lots of secualised violence against women and they call it "hot" I'd be noping out of there. That may be more a reflection of me and my experiences and and trauma. But if a dude is like "Incantation is of of my favourite movies" I'd be like same dude same
Exactly! Like if on the first date he’s like “hey you wanna watch nightmare on elm street” then sure! This is probably a cool dude! But if they break out the Guinea pig movies on the first date I’m climbing out of the bathroom window lol
@@SPMunny for me, it depends on which chapter they pull out and why. I would trust a man understanding and loving Mermaid In A Manhole, I'd be way more careful if they wanna put on The Devil's Experiment. I have been guilty of pulling out Flower Of Flesh And Blood myself though, so idk.
Like when watching a bad movie on purpose or when you hate a horror movie and turn down the volume to recreate its dialogue or movies that are so bad they're "good".
I'd rather Watch Evil Dead series than hang out with someone like her. That way I am actually entertained and have a good laugh. Shop Smart Shop S-mart - Ash Williams
I thought it was generally acknowledged that, if nothing else, most people enjoy horror movies because it makes them feel safer by comparison. It's a way, so to speak, of counting your blessings. "My life may be very complicated and I may suffer from PTSD and have unsolvable health issues - but at least I'm not the victim of a homicidal maniac, phew". Why this lady was not informed of what everyone already knows only goes to show that there's something wrong with her low level of even minimal socialising.
"TikTok generation"? I love my younger horrorhounds, but this GenX-er has loved horror movies since I was a wee X in the 70s. I love the catharsis they typically provide. (Anyone else do that "slasher movies as medieval morality play" paper? 🤣) I don't care if that gal doesn't like horror. I don't care if she hates horror. But calling horror fans twisted garbage, and then says she doesn't like when people call her out? Oh pot. Meet kettle.
My parents are both Gen X-ers and they raised my Millennial sisters and I on horror. I was 3 when I remembered going to the theater for horror and rated R movies. Of course things like sex and stuff had us getting our eyes covered, but our parents taught us right from wrong and that our dad was the monster in the mask and thus we grew up loving them and finding almost nothing that could scare us.
Me (a woman), was literally drawing blood, guts, skeletons, monsters, demons, whatever the moment I was old enough to hold a freakin' pen, so pretty young, and I drew those things because I thought it was just the "coolest" (admittedly I grew up in the 80s which were very lenient with what we could watch then, and that's where I got most of the inspiration). Some people just like horror stuff, it has nothing to do with being fundamentally "wrong" or "correct". But apparently, we, horror fans, have a better sense for differentiating real life and fiction more so than these weirdos who seem to think watching horror means you'll necessarily become an homicidal maniac... I've been disturbed and shocked infinitely more by real acts of violence throughout human history than any horror movie, and even THAT doesn't deter me from being a true crime fan also, for different reasons (real curiosity for forensics and the psychology of the criminal mind) than I am an horror fan (pure fun and entertainment). I get this aversion for anything dealing with death, as it can be a difficult subject for some people, but also, in some culture, it's customary to dig their loved ones out of their graves and have a celebratory dinner with them! Different viewpoints concerning death doesn't mean a deranged mind. Being "death positive", or seeing death (or any other dark themes) not strictly as an horrific thing to be feared where just thinking about it makes you psychopathic, isn't wrong! Ugh. So yeah, seeing people going after heavy metal, horror movies and the likes because it makes THEM uncomfortable and aren't happy this isn't a universal feeling shared by all, is hella annoying.
I've been a horror fan since I was 11. I'm now 52. I have no trauma, I just think watching and reading horror is fun 🤷♀️ I'm so glad that person is not a member of my family or a coworker.
13:20 Lol it's hilarious to me that the ONLY scenario she give is going to a guy's house as a women in watching a horror movie on a date which she calls "violence p*rn" 😂😂😂 like you don't watch horror movies on your own or with friends or in a movie theater It's just some random person random guy with a random girl on a maybe a random date and they're watching horror movies..😂😂😂 and also violence porn Not all horror movies are violent and also I wouldn't classify horror movies as violence porn. Acting like somebody has is making to her like horror movies and are asking her to prove why she doesn't and why she doesn't support it" "She keeps saying I won't get behind this".. who asked you to? 😂
That sort of judgemental crap that she is doing in that video is so pointless it's almost not worth doing a video on. My movie horror is a sing-along showing of Mamma Mia but what ever floats your boat. 😁 And who would invite invite a person that doesnt like horror movies to watch horror?! P.S. There is no way she's comedian! Even with the off chance she's "doing a bit". That's just cheap trolling.
My favorite horror movie is John Carpenter's adaptation of Steven King's Christine, and it's really about the dangers of addiction. I mean look at the main character of the film and book, Arnie Cunningham, as Christine is fixed up, his appearance changes and so does his personality, but the latter doesn't change for the better, which is something you would see when you see someone going through a drug or alcohol addiction, and (spoilers for the book and movie) his addiction to Christine ends up killing him, as in the movie he is ejected from Christine and impaled by a shard from the Plymouth's windshield, and in the book he dies in a car accident on the highway on the way to a college visit
Yeah, King was still in the throes of addiction when he wrote Christine. (Also one of my favorite horror movies of all time btw.) Needful Things was his first 'sober' book.
I used to HATE horror so much until recently and I also couldn’t understand why people liked getting scared. However, I never shamed people for liking it, I was honestly jealous of not being able to watch horror films with my friends. Looking back the reason I hated horror, was because I was in an abusive home environment and was already being terrorized by my older sibling on the daily. Now after much healing, being in a safe loving home with a kind partner, and lots of therapy I’m actually able to enjoy horror. So it’s literally the opposite of what this boomerfied millennial said in her first video. It wasn’t until I healed that I was able to appreciate the genre. The two things that also got me into horror were the solo board game series “Final Girl”and Mike Flanagan’s movies. I still HATE getting scared because I feel things so deeply (autistic) but the subtext and aesthetic of horror is totally worth it.
There's something "fundamentally wrong" with me I suppose. The "Silent Hill" game series was a big part of my formative years, especially the music, and I'm proud of it. Odds are if I tried to live my life by this woman's standards, I would have offed myself long ago.
Outside of a campy slasher or something like Hereditary or The Babadook, I’m not the biggest fan of horror. But you know what I do? I watch other things! And I don’t insult and mock you people that like things that I don’t! Which is how healthy, well-adjusted adults respond to this kind of thing. This woman is just rude, sounding just like those pearl-clutching grandmas that claimed heavy metal music was turning children into satan worshippers. I feel like she saw House of 1000 Corpses or something once with a tinder date and assumed all horror is like that.
1. Horror is entertainment. It's a safe space because we know it's not real. It can't harm us. That's what makes it fun. We come close to the brink of terror...But never quite fall in. 2. But it can definitely be cathartic. Some movies are just straight up fun. Nightmare. Scream. etc. But then there are those that feel way more real. It's not always a storyline or a character I identify with. But sometimes I do have more skin in the game when the protagonist is a woman like me, and in an impossibly dangerous situation. Revenge. Woman of the Hour. Black Christmas, Etc. 3. But sometimes it's just familiar situations. Feeling like something is off when you meet someone for the first time. Trying to decide if you should trust them. Being injured in the middle of nowhere, with no one for miles, Etc etc. 4. If we look at the big mass or major crimes of the past 10-20 years, all of the perps, how many of those actually came from self described horror fans? Seriously. Not saying there aren't any. I can think of at least 1 that probably was. But most of these people, regardless of ethnic or racial backgrounds, have very typical mainstream American upbringings. Which is to say they were all very "normal". Until they weren't. 5. My guy friend calls Harga (Midsommar) 'Bad Boyfriend Camp' lmfao 6. Love Horror, Love Metal. You'll hear the most life affirming words in metal, goth, punk music. It's as if people want to remain hopeful, but the world disappoints. People disappoint. So you'll hear themes as vast as darkness and hope from the same bands n artists.
Horror is my comedy for the most part. It can be a touching comedy but still funny or dramatic. Im used to being told im trash for enjoying alot of my stuff from clothes to the art i enjoy including movies music and games. People are boring af and stupid. Look at this calling everything and anyone having fun "cringe" or "bad" let people have fun ffs.
Horror has been around much longer than the 1930s. Nosferatu and the Cabinet of Dr Caligari are examples of great silent horror films. According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, the first horror novel was published in 1765 (The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole). I'm a 61 year old woman who kept my love for horror quiet because of the mainstream attitude that anyone who loves horror must be a sadist, and many many people thought it was especially weird for a girl to love it. Or if you aren't a sadist, then you are an immature basement dweller. At least the Walking Dead introduced the genre to the mainstream and it became more acceptable for the average person to like it. That creator acts like they're saying something shocking and new - no honey, you can go sit with the 80 year old grandmas I used to have to deal with.
When I was a teenager I fell in love with horror movies. my mom was too scared to try any of them, but in 2020 I slowly started introducing her into the genre. Me and her just saw Terrifier 3 again in theaters cause she had so much fun, people really need to broaden their horizons and try new stuff
This is my first video of yours and I immediately subscribed, this was awesome, I love your takes and this woman made me pause the video to rant out loud alone, in my bedroom, while dealing with the beginnings of a cold 🤣 Horror is one of the MOST dynamic and varied genres out there, because they have the room to borrow from other genres and it usually works pretty seamlessly. There are even titles that I know SHE would enjoy. Like the silliest and funniest and most just light and fun movie What We Do in the Shadows, or something thats hopeful and meaningful and BEAUTIFUL like You Won't Be Alone. I liken horror to things like black coffee or spicy food... the immediate discomfort you feel (for horror, it's fear; for coffee, it's bitterness; for spicy food its the pain in your mouth from the spice) drives a way a lot of people, but once you push past the discomfort and cross that threshold, you'll find that black coffee has lovely notes that are vastly different from one another, you'll appreciate the sweet or savory flavors underneath the spices of spicy food, and you'll be able to appreciate the deep, complex, and thought provoking messages within horror. Just like anything else, it's ok not to like something. It's ok not to understand why others do. It's not ok to bully people for the harmless things they enjoy, and play the victim when you get clowned on for it. Not that I'm good with people making fun of her appearance or calling her like racist or homophobic because she had a bad horror take, that's just as bad. Don't do that lol.
Lots of things like body horror help me confront and enjoy my life despite being mentally and physically disabled. There are movies that confront lots of hard subjects to talk about and thus give people outlets for these issues. I've been watching horror and enjoying similar stuff alongside my 2 little sisters and my parents since I was 3 and I'm now a 34 year old woman. I may be disabled but I have never done anything to be seen as a bad member of society, same for my family, so it's funny when people try to say those of us who like horror are bad people and there's something wrong with us. We have loved Halloween and "odd stuff" and video games and music forever and it only serves to make life funner to enjoy; especially when your life is hell thanks to disabilities. The heavy metal and punk communities have been some of the nicest places I've ever been before; no judgement, only support, yet people like this person think they are better than us and judge us.
There are so many great academic works about horror from every possible angle that at this point being upset about horror is just being a Luddite. You can (and people do) teach a university course about horror films.
Wait.....I...can watch NICE THINGS?! What?! WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME THIS SOONER!! Oh my GOD!! I'm gonna go watch every Bing Crosby movie I can find like 10 times!!
I love horror movies. I also love “nice things” as that lady puts it. I love all kinds of movies. Still something wrong with me? Lol what a stupid take
YESSS omg why can't people get it that I get enjoyment of watching a fake maniacal clown fake killing fake people with fake blood, but I can't watch sad movies about real life issues that I actually face it everyday. This is a almost weekly argument I have with my mom. She's obsessed with sad drama movies about social issues and I'm obsessed with horror movies. We can only watch courtroom dramas and law and order together. She did liked long legs and the witch tho.
As a young girl growing up in the 80's and 90's I fell in love with horror for many reasons. First off, my grandpa got my into horror. We used to watch Tales from the Darkside and Twilight Zone together when I was like 6 or 7. Those shows never gave my nightmare or frightened me. I think I've always been much more afraid of real life. Humans are evil, not movies. Anyway, I fell in love with horror first off because of the really cool super strong final girls. These women were tough, smart and usually defeated the bad guy/evil. Watching Alice kick Freddy's ass in Nightmare on Elm Street 4 was everything to me. I loved the characters in these movies just as much as the villains. I was not an outgoing kid and I was bullied in the 4th and 5th grade. Horror movies were a release for me. They made me forget the real horrors of my life and escape into a world where evil could be defeated. Horror movies made me happy, they still do. Horror was also the only genre where women could be badass. We didn't have Ms Marvel or Wonder Woman movies (ok we had the tv show but it was a little before my time and not very good). Horror movies got me through some very rough times. And there are so many different kinds of horror movies to enjoy. Dark and deep movies, creature features, monsters, slashers, animal attacks, ghosts and paranormal. And I love all kinds of horror. Especially form the 70's and 80's. The people who think horror lovers are wrong or evil are incredibly ignorant. I think it's much healthier to watch horror than a Hallmark film or a romantic comedy. This woman is obviously not paying attention to the real world right now because that is where the real horror is. Just watch the nightly news. It's more terrifying than any film. She should be worry about that and not entertainment
I was just thinking today oh hey, Harland hasn’t uploaded in like a month and you come up in my feed with this horror video and I look at your channel and I somehow missed three of your videos? Wonderful website, will correct mistake and watch them!
I think Horror as a genre is my favorite because of the artistry and creativity that it takes to create something that seems unimaginable like The Thing or creatures in From Beyond. I just appreciate the art and the artists behind it.
“There is something fundamentally wrong with you” well Karen, I DO have religious trauma and clinical anxiety, so I guess yeah you’re right on that point; but that’s part of why I like experiencing fear and taboo subjects in a controlled environment
I've been watching horror movies/ scary stuff since I was a kid. I'm never gonna stop or try to hide my love for it. It's deeper then just screaming and blood .Great video
I really really despise this attitude that the fictional media you like (or make) is indicative of your real life morals. I’m Gen Z and this puritanical conservative black and white attitude is surprising common among young “leftists” who will turn around and say we should bring the Hayes code back or advocate for censorship. Your sense of disgust in most cases should not be your barometer for something being morally bad. I have a phobia of slugs and they cause a strong bad physical reaction, but that’s how I feel, based on that feeling it wouldn’t be fair for me to turn around and say if you like slugs you must be a sick freak because I hate them and my reaction must be the correct one. People need to realize that not understanding why someone else likes something doesn’t make that thing bad. Part of why I really love horror is because I grew up in an abusive situation, it gave me something else to be scared of, something that couldn’t actually hurt me. Instead of barricading my door to keep a family member out I could pretend that I was in The Walking Dead and it was just zombies on the other side. My fight or flight was activated constantly anyways, I’d rather it be towards something I’m choosing to interact with and have control over. I’m also an artists and I love seeing other artist’s work in the practical effects and makeup. I also write horror as a way to process some things that have happened to me. Horror is very important to me.. and also it’s just fun.
You dismantle her opinion completely. I won't even say her arguments, because she never succeeds in establishing a line of argumentation. On the one hand, I feel embarrassed for her. On the other, I am offended because she has the gall to be rude to a group of people and then try to paint herself as a victim when they are rude to her back. As for the comments on her appearance, those should be beneath us. Call her out on her hypocrisy, narrow-mindedness, and poor debating skills instead.
it really seems like everyone will try to shame you for the movies you like all the time and i've been sick of it for years. every time i've seen anyone in comments under youtube videos say they thought "stalker" was boring (which i can sympathize with) people who like it have always been quick to jump at their throats and say something along the lines of "well then go back to marvel, kid" or something nasty like that. A: that person has absolutely no idea what the movie tastes of the person they're responding to is based purely on the fact that they don't like that ONE particular movie that, if you ignore all the subtext, is just three people walking around in a forest and a rusty tunnel for two hours, B: is it really such a morally objectionable crime against humanity to like marvel movies? especially since even those movies have their moments every now and then amongst all their soullessness and flaws, which means that you can't judge a person's taste in movies even if they like marvel movies! film youtube has a really really REALLY bad judgement problem.
This reminds me of when war, action movies, or crime movies were criticized for being too violent and masculent. Or when that talk show host attacked Quantum Tarantino for his movies. In reality. People need to just chill out and keep their thoughts and opinions to themselves. If you like blood, guts, guns, chainsaws, or explosions, good for you. If you don't good for you. In the end. It's our personal choice. I love horror, action, war, crime, westerns, science fiction, and comedy. I'm sure all these categories are not everyone's cup of tea.
I grew up watching horror movies with my mom. I can't imagine my life without horror films. My boyfriend and I watch a few a week. I have my sub-generes that I prefer and so does he. We don't shame each other for what we like. This person was probably creating the bait. I was scratching my head when she was saying, "you want me to go to your house- a strange man's house..." Why would you go to someone's house you consider strange? Maybe I'm missing something ?
I don’t think this was rage bait. As a big fan of horror, we are weird. And we do like horrible things. I didn’t disagree with her assessment of horror or its fans. Like I don’t any horror movie fans that aren’t a little deranged 😂 It’s kinda what makes us cool. 🤷🏽♀️
The issue with video games and violence in media is when people can't tell that the violence in those is fictional. And that's not the problem of games or media. In other words, there's something wrong with people who think that fiction causes reality.
And the people who think that there HAS to be a reason for why violence happen; that humans can't just be pieces of crap for no reason. I mean, our species murdered and pillaged and spread diseases just to make the US into a country and then they want to sit there and say that violence is the fault of games or music and not because of the fact that humans are messed up creatures and if raised in a bad situation or if mentally ill, it can make things worse but it's not solely the media's issues and more the humans around them. It's annoying.
Theres a lot to say about this "enjoying horor is bad" take, and a lot you explored beautifully in this video, but overall it just struck me as SO funny that this creator started the rant off by saying "if you enjoy horror, there is something fundamentally wrong with you", bc like, that's a big reason why people become attracted to the horror genre! Horror is big in the queer community and neurodivergent community bc if society treats you like something monstrous/alien/doesnt belong, it can be super cathartic to watch movies or be part of a community where, to some extent, the monstrous and weird is celebrated! Like ok, sure, something IS fundamentally wrong with me, but theres a bunch of cool motherfuckers out there who also have the same thing wrong with them and we're having a good time about it.
Horror is one of the three main fantastic genres, next to Fantasy and Science Fiction. At it's best Horror can ask questions and make the reader/viewer think about a subject. Shine light from a new angle on to it. That kinda stuff. But it also contains some of the most obvious shlock and material that's JUST out to shock and disturb. That makes it relatively useless to judge about "Horror" in one swipe. There is so many different kinds of Horror with so many different focusses...
Going from "Horror fans are violent" to "I will beat you up if I see you in the street" is wild
You're Next had a great final girl
You should def check out the solo board game series “Final Girl.” I play it with my partner so it can def be a two player person co-op game.
Same here. I've always been a horror gal. The Nightmare movies are my favorites. I love Nancy and Alice from those films.
I noticed that final girls exist in a horror game genre, as well. More specifically RPG-Maker Horror Games. Most of the main characters of these games are young girls, or older female teens.
“Why watch horror when you can watch something nice” got me cackling, I can’t take this person seriously ☠️
I couldn't from the moment she said 'I have to break my silence' GIRL no you did not. No body needed to hear all that trash.
Like some romantic comedy where the female character is just eye candy. Sounds like a blast. lol. No thanks That lady has seen too many Hallmark films
It's giving "Why ride a rollercoaster when you can just sit on a bench"
I don't think she realizes that horror fans do in fact watch nice things sometimes. I like gorey horror movies and cute plushies. You can have multiple interests.
Immediately followed by "you don't have to feel nice while watching it" THEN WTF IS THE POINT?!
People sometimes or most of the time over dramatize things and say:
Don’t watch the movie!
It’s too gory!
It’s Demonic and evil!
This movie will put a curse on You
Like people were adults now we should know by now that horror movies aren’t real. The blood isn’t real and no one’s really getting harmed. But anyways that’s my side rant lol 😆 🖤
Exactly, like forgive me for not letting you witness me puke during a hallmark special first.
If horror is wrong because its not saccharine,
then I don't want to be right.

Plus, they act like we only watch horror films. People are capable of watching different things, but it's halloween time, so we enjoy them a bit more this time year.
Just like calling someone's interests cringe, calling them problematic or evil is just a way to avoid engaging with them like a human.
I feel like the "i have held my tounge" lady should have tried harder.
I feel like she was lying to me. She didn’t try any such thing, she didn’t even plan ahead for her little whinge
Naw, she's already trying too hard.
She should have held her tongue… in her bloody, bloody hands.
And I'm trying to think of a good horror with a gory tongue scene. lol
this is so specific, I think a guy she liked invited her over and put on a horror movie and she was soooo pissed and decided to make it everyone else's problem
Yeah she has a personal grudge clearly
Omg flashback I remember *vividly* being a complete dumbass. Staying over my girlfriend’s dorm for the first time..we weren’t even dating yet😂. She’s like wanna watch something .?? I’m like..I know ..Hellraiser 2 it’s SO good!!😂😂. It’s been years..I brought that up the other day she’s like “yeah that was some weird shit but a good movie..and it’s ok I still love you 🥰 😂”
Seriously. And I don't mean to gatekeep when it comes to mistreatment, but she acts like he did something... way worse.
"Objectively mad" is just a subjective emotion. Lol
@@donbongz4732i meant that they act like their opinion is objective. I probably should stop commenting while driving lol
@@rosecity_chris lmao i hope you're joking 💀
That, and Bill Maher is just generally an arrogant, colossal piece of shit that loves the smell of his own bowel movements.
Also maybe og dracula movies...

I find it somewhat hard to believe anyone's inviting this person to their house for "kissing" purposes.

Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself.
Low hanging fruit is apparently , delicious
I also hate that someone sees a metaphor in something ex. Fight Club is a gay allegory. And then everyone just repeats it without making their own opinions on what the movie is saying or said. Ex. The Thing is a AIDS allegory, well that was someone's opinion but the creators didn't say that shit. It's just that an opinion and people love to repeat that shit.
I'd be willing to bet the people that use it as a defense like that, like her, can't even define what media literacy means 😂

Of course. Seems so obvious.
The real horror in this bad take is that she's a Mets fan. If you're a Mets fan there's something fundamentally wrong with you. Why do you like to be sad and disappointed all the time.
The Hayes Code existed partly because of some people not liking horror movies and made it everyone else's problem.
And then we got extreme horror in response. We really do go full circle

Especially if horrible things are happening to an undeserving person. Guarantee I am way sadder then
I do have unresolved trauma and am mentally ill! I also love horror! I don't have a problem with people of religion except when they want to change the world to fit their religion.
Horror movies have been around for over a century, since the silent era. In a college directing class our instructor showed us Cabinet of Dr Caligari as an example of production design. I never realized how depraved this petite soft spoken woman must have been to enjoy a horror movie. She also loved Chekhov.
I also watched the Cabinet of Doctor Caligari in a film class, and it's the only horror film to ever give my girlfriend a nightmare.
First horror film was actually 1896, with a lot of other shorts depicting everything from paranormal, murder, vampires, to werewolves all thru the early 1900s.

Chopping Mall is definitely about 80's materialism and work explotation.
If she is a comedian, she’s terrible at it
I saw someone else who did a reaction to her video. Iirc, she was complaining about people's tinder profiles saying they love horror movies.
Mamamia gave me headache ngl...too much songs. But I dnt mind Others who like those.
As a woman who loves horror who got her lesbian sexual awakening from Elvira, I double everything you said. Instant subscription.
5. My guy friend calls Harga (Midsommar) 'Bad Boyfriend Camp' lmfao
Great video!
Content like this is why i subscribed.
also double commenting cuz that's good for engagement yeah?
This is my first video of yours and I immediately subscribed, this was awesome, I love your takes and this woman made me pause the video to rant out loud alone, in my bedroom, while dealing with the beginnings of a cold 🤣
Horror is one of the MOST dynamic and varied genres out there, because they have the room to borrow from other genres and it usually works pretty seamlessly.
THE BIT ABOUT MOONLIGHT😭😭9:41 SAME.. LITERALLT SAME😭😭
Nuance is a rare bird these days.
Cold weather gang for life
That jump scare at the beginning was blood curdling and I enjoyed it immensely. I must be one sick twist.
You are an evil, bad person.
Imagine having such an easy and chill life that THIS is what upsets and angers you. It’s just genre of film and of art in general. Wild.
As a person who runs hot and is constantly sweating, I felt seen when you said preferring hot weather to cold weather was a bizarre hot take!
She should be worry about that and not entertainment
i love scary movies cause life in it self is truly terrifying so yeah
When she talked about a guy inviting you over to watch a horror movie, “I was like
Hell yes. Perfect date. 😂”
This woke woman needs to wake up! Love your video and opinions. You speak for us all! FYI... She craves the attention.
“There is something fundamentally wrong with you” well Karen, I DO have religious trauma and clinical anxiety, so I guess yeah you’re right on that point; but that’s part of why I like experiencing fear and taboo subjects in a controlled environment
Wait, I thought an SS uniform was required for pickleball. I only assume this because every person over 60 is in the trump cult it seems.
My dude, people DO say that about rom coms. A lot.
Oh no! Some people like a thing that I don’t like. Let me explain why that’s unacceptable.
Based take
something tells me shes not a successful comedian
god this channel rules
Ti West's X trilogy is possibly the most interesting meta commentary on horror and film history ever.
I wasn't a fan of X, but Pearl was incredible. One of my favorite movies.
The beginning of this made me chuckle
Like ok, sure, something IS fundamentally wrong with me, but theres a bunch of cool motherfuckers out there who also have the same thing wrong with them and we're having a good time about it.
she's all like "you guys aren't doing it for me"
The women looks about my moms age yet she's about as brainrotted as a Privileged iPad kid. TikTok really has killed made people dumber I think.
