A lot of actors will shy away from stuff like this but Casper fully embraces it. There's a podcast where Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling talk about Smallville and all you hear from Tom is how he "can't remember" what happened on set and it's like come on, you were there for 10 years, give us a slice of life on set. Not like Casper. Dude did a few months shooting and remembers what the cameraman said to him when he chipped a tooth
@@Dave8T9 i get that, but doing a weekly tv show can cause everything to blur together, and barring something significant (like chipping a tooth) you may not remember a lot of specifics
Why the hell is he not voice acting in this game???? Devs, PLZ. Also, I love that he still gets so excited about ST. Love it when actors are so passionate about the roles we love them for.
I saw Starship Troopers in theaters when I was 7 or 8, I’m 35 now and have Starship Troopers inspired half-sleeve tattoo and every scene from the movie lives rent free in my head. Casper, you were truly an inspiring actor to me and I’ve followed your works, and your costars work over all these years. You’re all amazing.
I also saw it in the theater when I was a kid. At first I wasn't sure if it was actually a good movie because it was so over the top corny, but then the epic swarm standoff scene happened and I knew it was a special movie. The cornyness is classic Verhoven satire, like Robocop, another classic.
I can only imagine the set when Casper got up and the cameraman goes "I didn't know you had a squib or blood packet!" *spits blood* "I didn't" *set goes wild* "Ribs hurt real bad." "Wanna do another take?" *glare*
I never watched any of the sequals to Starship Troopers, but just see Rico being so nostalgic about killing bugs that didn't exist, made me grin so hard.
Eh, most of them weren't any good. A few were, but 2 was garbage and 3 was 'meh' at best. There was a animated movie called 'Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars' that was pretty good.
Starship Troopers had such an impact on me as a teen going to the cinema and watching that masterpiece that sadly was overlooked by everybody. Man that film has it all.
God, I wish you would have included the entire intro from beginning to end with his reaction second by second. Its one of the best parts of the game, BUT thank you for this video. Truly especial. Great work as always !

What's crazy is that the director of the Starship Troopers infamously didn't even bother to read the book. I believe he claimed it was just fascist propaganda. Which is ironic because, from what I've heard, the book is nothing like the movie and is super libertarian and about personal liberty and responsibility. Edit: fixed a word
@@camerapasteurize7215 ironically Verhoeven accidentally portrayed the Federation in a libertarian way like the book. But yeah pretty dumb of him to dismiss the book as Fascist
@@114Riggs Verhoeven was right, he had it pegged from the beginning. I've read the book. Its a little bit like the bits of 1984 By George Orwell that mention the endless war but actually sincere about the legitimacy of it. If you've ever been in the military you know they are not fit to run a civil society, it takes a little while for you to be fit to transition back into one.
I hope you read this Casper. You stared in one of the best movies of all time! I watch Starship Troopers every time it shows up on my recommended list on my TV!
Starship Troopers was so insanely ahead of it's time. Even the critics didn't know what to think of it. Coupled with state of the art 90s CGI and animatronics, along with actors who gave it their all. Absolutely timeless movie and I love it's getting more attention with Helldivers and games based on the Starship Troopers franchise.
FUCK we need Rico as a diver voice, maybe a democracy officer. I love Casper so fucking much man, guys a legend and the fact that he’s so into the game just makes me love him more.
This was such a great idea to get Casper Van Dien reaction/opinion especially since Helldrivers is simply a spiritual successor to the movies and to the few StarShip Troopers games that were created. It still pretty badass that Casper still can pull off his Rico's persona, kinda the same energy you see from Arnold Schwarzenegger from the terminator series, Michael Biehn from Aliens, Peter Weller from Robocop....man as a Gen Zer you guys in the 80s and 90s had it made

Just be like that, just because people made an amazing series in a certain kind of media, doesn't mean they or the series would translate it well to other media. Sometimes, it's up to tributes to bridge the gap and carry the flag
As a veteran that served overseas and Helldiver player, thank you for this video. That story in the end about the marine in the end got me all teary eyed. "Death from above!!"

@@jefferydraper4019 Honestly, giving him a reboot to do it 'right' (in terms of the source material at least) would be great. Not that the original wasn't a fantastic flick. @@AdeptusCaeiusIII If you changed the character names, i dont think anyone would realize the movie was based on Starship Troopers. And thats basically what Verhoeven did in reverse. he wrote a story, based on a conversation, added some names from the book and made a movie.
@@jefferydraper4019 I'm not arguing counter to that. I'm just saying the finished product was good. Just not faithful. I am also in the camp that thinks it'd be nearly impossible to do Heinlein justice without the Snyder Justice League treatment. Or a long-form series. Could you IMAGINE Harsh Mistress, Time Enough or Stranger? I doubt ANY theater would accept a movie long enough for those themes. I'd love HBO or someone picking up a longer-form Troopers script for an 8-episode series based on the book. Like I said. I'd hobble to a theater for a seat, or just grab an over-priced sub to watch the series.
It's almost comical that THE actor of Starship Troopers react to Helldivers 2 instead of the actual Starship Troopers game (Starship Troopers: Extermination). It's surreal.
Sadly that one seems stuck in development hell. TBH I don't think it has a chance. Helldivers may not be licensed but the devs are far more passionate about their work.
Starship troopers had a some following before Helldivers came out, but as i understood they made an update that fucked a lot things and the huge success of Helldivers just put them in the shade.
@@nicolaspeigne1429 It was something like they tried to 1.0 too early and broke the game beyond repair. Right around the time Helldivers 2 launched, which caused this mass exodus to THAT game. Supposedly, though, the Troopers game is still being worked on and still has a good following, and HD2 is starting to hemorrhage player base due to the insistence by the devs that the game needs to 'ramp up difficulty' a few dozen more times by year's end. I'm thinking the Troopers game will be mildly easier and a tribute to the 'expendable warfare' of the movie, while Helldivers is going to be the 'what do you mean you want functioning weapons?' variation for the 'wow omg lol yeet' gamers who fit THAT particular niche. Each will have its individual lane. Question is just whether or not the devs for the Troopers game can salvage the development time. Also, I say what I said about HD2 because the forums are full of people who have no idea what the word 'balance' means. The devs for HD2 have said they have no plans to make it anything but HARDER for the next 5 years, regardless of casual players' decisions to try playing or not. Launch was the easiest HD2 will ever be. Good or bad. P.S.: Don't forget EDF6 is also coming soon-ish, so 3 bug shooters sharing market space.

Best reaction video ever! As a kid, I read the book and then when the film came out, I watched it over and over and over. When i got old, I had the chance to meet Casper at both Comic-Con and Wondercon in California. He's a great guy, and his movie Starship Troopers is still as entertaining as ever. Now as a Helldivers 2 player, I only wish that Casper could have seen the Bile Spewers shooting out their rears (aka Plasma bugs), or the maniacal laughter from someone shooting a machine gun non-stop screaming phrases that could only have come from Starship Troopers. Even better, sitting on the bridge of your ship when you are above the Automaton planet and now the bots are shooting up towards the ships and causing some of them to explode! If Casper had seen videos of what I've described, his mind would have been even more blown!
I saw Starship Troopers in the theaters when it released. It's always been one of my favorite films. There's nothing more fun than playing Helldivers and quoting Starship Troopers with a random group of players and have them quote Starship Troopers back to you.
I swear, I have an in-game footage of a teammate, breaking the armor on a Charger's back, having that charger ram a rock, he got on that rock, climbed on the back and started mag-dumping in the open back... trully J.Rico style. One of my best footage.
I mean, with all those easter eggs in the game like the planet names really ripping Starship Troopers off in every way, and the actor himself admiting it's exactly like Starship Troopers, i can see a lawsuit coming.
Makes me so happy to know that he knows how much people love his portrayal and the movie he worked after so many years, and for fans of the film to make a loving tribute and massively successful game inspired by the film, and in the process introduce new generations to it, and have them join in on the fun and appreciate the film as well. it's like the gift that keeps on giving.

Considering how hard he hit the ground in that scene, enough to crack/break a couple of ribs, I could understand. Oh, also, he hit so hard that if you look closely, you can see the chin-strap on his helmet pop clean off and land next to him
The man hates bugs, what can you say?
Why?
Like he embraced the role so completely that he still feels the real emotions that the scene was supposed to elicit.
The fact that Casper is still passionate about this stuff is awesome.
I love how he isn't whiny and saying he wants to branch out and not be remembered for this one thing. He knows what he is famous for, accepts it, and even relishes in it. Good on him.
As someone who served for 8 years, thank you for your amazing attitude and willingness to make a dream come true for a fellow serviceman.
This is so cool, I haven't even played Helldivers, but some of my friends do. Months ago, when I saw the game, I immediately associated it with Starship Troopers and mentioned it to them. They hadn't even seen the movie and didn't know what I was talking about.
Now, while I'm taking a dump, TH-cam recommends me this video, and it actually makes me want to play the game.
“Would I ever consider being in hell divers?”
Rico. You once asked me for advice. You want some now? Never pass up a good thing.
🤣Yes Professor 🤣

C'mon man.... it's Johnny f*cking Rico. I don't care what the context is, I'm in!
YEAH BUDDY!
Starship Troopers was my favourite movie growing up. I must have watched through at least 2 VHS tapes of it, then I read the book and fell even more in love with the series. Recently started playing HellDivers and it's a huge rush of nostalgia and amazing fun. This was a great idea for a video!
Genuinely seems like an awesome guy, and it's pretty wholesome to see how much he loves Starship Troopers.
I heard he was terrible to work with on set and a total POS.. fyi.. LOL

Guy had some PTSD from the filming :D
Met him at a few Comic Cons. I know he's had his ups and downs, but he was always kind and patient with fans. Glad he is digging it.
Ups and downs?
This is the kind of actor we need more of. Passionate and serious about his roles, genuinely kind and friendly, and happy to meet and interact with fans.
If the Starship Troopers game comes to consoles, I'll be there to do my part! Sadly, my laptop is a potato, so if it doesn't come to PlayStation, I'm out of the fight.
Sony is partnered with Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers Extermination. A SST Warbond is a no brainer: Movie accurate Armor, Weapons etc.
I kind of think that might be a slippery slope into corporate sponsorship. It would kind of ruin the immersion of this universe
@@brendanjrice7307this universe *is* starship troopers. they could easily just have a “Roughneck” Warbond that people would get if it was just Starship Troopers skins and they made some vague/light backstory about how Roughnecks were precursors to the Helldivers.
@@brendanjrice7307 Nah it wouldn't. It would be call as hell and hopefully they do it. What would ruin the immersion of this universe is if they start selling gun skins with anime girls on them and shit like CS.

this man is a gem; i love how excited he is when talking about anything related to Starship Troopers, and how he still can recall lines from the movie 27 years later, and not just his lines, other characters too
A lot of actors will shy away from stuff like this but Casper fully embraces it.
@@Dave8T9 i get that, but doing a weekly tv show can cause everything to blur together, and barring something significant (like chipping a tooth) you may not remember a lot of specifics
it’s great to see someone appreciate veterans in todays’ society.
Why the hell is he not voice acting in this game???? Devs, PLZ. Also, I love that he still gets so excited about ST. Love it when actors are so passionate about the roles we love them for.
I LOVE Casper’s enthusiasm after all these years, it had me grinning like an idiot that he doesnt just love it, he LIVES it!
Starship troopers definitely inspired me to enlist in the Marine Corps and then did 2 enlistments. Thanks Casper for doing your part!
That´s cool af. But also funny because they were trying for people to not do that, lmao.
Thats awesome to have the tattoo.. true fan
I have the "Death From Above" one. Glad to see you, trooper. I have a set of armor and uniform
when you were 7, how did they let you in? I had to wait til it came out on VHS as it was R16. It would've been mind blowing to see in cinema.
@@Verociity my dad took me, he wanted to see it as well haha
I also saw it in the theater when I was a kid. At first I wasn't sure if it was actually a good movie because it was so over the top corny, but then the epic swarm standoff scene happened and I knew it was a special movie. The cornyness is classic Verhoven satire, like Robocop, another classic.
I can only imagine the set when Casper got up and the cameraman goes
"I didn't know you had a squib or blood packet!"
*spits blood*
"I didn't"
*set goes wild*
"Ribs hurt real bad."
"Wanna do another take?"
*glare*
Lmao
I never watched any of the sequals to Starship Troopers, but just see Rico being so nostalgic about killing bugs that didn't exist, made me grin so hard.
The 2nd movie sucked anyway due to low budget, and was more of a thriller than a war movie.
@@mrnygren2 yeah, saw that one. @selvokaz, you didn't miss much.

it wasnt overlooked, we all loved it when we watched it
God, I wish you would have included the entire intro from beginning to end with his reaction second by second. Its one of the best parts of the game, BUT thank you for this video. Truly especial. Great work as always !
1: this dude ages so well, I'm like whats the point of my life?
2: The fact that he took the time to read the book, makes him way more likeable to all those other writers and actors, that haven't even glanced at the source material.
I salute you General J Rico.

This was such a great idea to get Casper Van Dien reaction/opinion especially since Helldrivers is simply a spiritual successor to the movies and to the few StarShip Troopers games that were created. It still pretty badass that Casper still can pull off his Rico's persona, kinda the same energy you see from Arnold Schwarzenegger from the terminator series, Michael Biehn from Aliens, Peter Weller from Robocop....man as a Gen Zer you guys in the 80s and 90s had it made

@@AdeptusCaeiusIII Unfortunately they would likely do a horrible version of it with Rico being gay...or disloyal to the state...or some woke BS.
The man really seems to love the franchise. That's so encouraging to see
It's almost comical that THE actor of Starship Troopers react to Helldivers 2 instead of the actual Starship Troopers game (Starship Troopers: Extermination).

Oh he knows ...
It is exactly starship troopers
Lawyer - It is the legally allowable amount of Starship Troopers
I mean, with all those easter eggs in the game like the planet names really ripping Starship Troopers off in every way, and the actor himself admiting it's exactly like Starship Troopers, i can see a lawsuit coming.
Makes me so happy to know that he knows how much people love his portrayal and the movie he worked after so many years, and for fans of the film to make a loving tribute and massively successful game inspired by the film, and in the process introduce new generations to it, and have them join in on the fun and appreciate the film as well. it's like the gift that keeps on giving.
