The pre-2008 Lin Dan was great but still prone to lapses in concentration, as in this match and the M’sian Open that same year. He needed a bit more maturity. Won another world title in ‘07, and then at ‘08 during the Olympics, he went into beast mode. I’d say it was the Tang Xianhu effect, but credit to Li Yongbo who, despite knowing that Lin Dan was already great and stood a good chance of winning gold in Beijing anyway, also knew that this player has still got some unlocked mental potential left in him, and put Tang in charge of LD.
From ‘08 Olympics onwards, and some other major tournaments, including the ‘09 AE, China Open and ‘10 Thomas Cup, he went on to destroy LCW in straight sets. And then he sort of came down a step and became a half human again in 2011, which LCW said was when he himself was at his peak, but LD still beat CW more of than not all through to 2017.
The undisputed GOAT of badminton... unless someone else could match his achievements, which is unlikely, and looking at it now, the only possible candidate would be Momota, but he would need a lot less bad luck and more good fortune.

What a blast from the past. Legend vs Legend. To see them play like that and get even better is something awesome! There was so many twists and turns to the match. The old rule of only winning a point on your own serve was gruelling! Lin Dan lead the way at the start. Lee Chong Wei came back in the second. He then stormed ahead in the third. But left the door open for Lin Dan to claw it back. Epic! Now looking back it kinda summed up his badminton career. Always so close but yet so far. On Lin Dan's side, it is nice to see him the way he should be remembered; as Super Dan! 🐐🐐

If it was Lin Dan he would've ended that rally. This game has so many parallels with many of the close 3 set matches they played later on, where Lin Dan does the impossible and stays in the game. LD has another gear that LCW simply doesn't have.
Only different match was 2016 Rio Olympics semifinal when LD did an impossible save and took it to deuce, but that time LCW actually won in the end.

@@dukedave7 right but you have to remember LCW in 2018 had 12 MORE YEARS of experience playing against top competition as compared to 2006 LCW. I would also argue in 2018 LCW's physical fitness was probably pretty similar to him in 2006, so basically 2018 LCW had more than a decade of extra experience with the same weapons he had in 2006. LCW in 2006 would not have that knowledge advantage, and therefore I'm not certain at all he was better than Momota then. Also if use your logic, Momota also beat LCW in 2018 in the Indonesia Open, so if Momota could beat a LCW in 2018 (a better LCW than 2006 LCW) wouldn't that mean Momota would destroy 2006 LCW?

This is to show LD (or the Chinese team) has learnt that LCW usual shot when being pushed to the deep forehand corner is a straight drop. LD still expose this 'weakness' of LCW during the legendary 2011 World Championship final, I guess it is hard for LCW to change the habit even though he knows LD and Chinese team realize this is his usual return. He gave a come back during Olympic 2016 though by doing a cross court drop, surprising LD when he was trying to be preemptive and thus won the semifinal against him.

Ya, i think LCW has certain consistent way of playing and that was read by LD. LCW is "naked" mentally in front of LD.. LD can read his mind and attack his weak points. The problem of Lee Chong Wei playing against Lin Dan is not about the "quality" of his game,it is all about his "placement" of the shuttle which is not to the right place and this makes Lin Dan always capitalized.
I would say that Lee Chong Wei is very good at his defence and technical side, and Lin Dan is very good in smashing and tactical game. So both players are at par.
It seems that Lin Dan knows Lee Chong Wei's game quite well, but Lee Chong Wei,after so many times 'fighting' against Lin Dan is still searching for Lin Dan's weakness. I think Lee Chong Wei's badminton coaches have the problems for failing to identify them.

Imagine leading the deciding game 13-6 with just 2 more points to end the match. However, he completely lost it without winning any points. He must have felt arrogantly comfortable initially and soon lost his focus and confidence when Lin Dan closed the gap. He finally gave up and surrendered easily, probably due to fatigue and lost of hope and fighting spirit for not taking advantage of the chance when he was leading 13-6. In this match, pride was his downfall. As far as technique, skills and stamina are concerned, LCW was ahead. But when it comes to strength and mental tenacity, Lin Dan has the edge. LCW had to go through a lot in life, the tide was always against him but he never gave up. To be cont'd.

Lol who tf can play like this? Now we see why LD and LCW are the only two on par with each other. Their physicality and stamina are monstrous. Playing almost 2 hrs in this sport professionally will kill them lol

If the scoring system was changed to 21 rally point, it would be like this:
    LD vs LCW
    Set 1 21-15 (interval 11-7)
    Set 2 19-21 (interval 11-5)
    Set 3 17-21 (interval 5-11)
    LCW would be a winner
