The best option for summer tops (in case you don't really mind summer fibers) is to add a thin strand of viscose yarn with elastane content. It will give the fabric some memory and elasticity, so you would be able to use patterns designed for more wooly yarn 😊 also viscose is very silky and it will reduce the rough feeling of summer fibers
Thank you for this tip! I love the idea 😊
I'm doing this right now with my Luna Tee! Viscose, bamboo, and a lace weight alpaca silk!
I haven't seen any yarn with elastane. Can you point me in the right direction of where to find this? Us ladies need all the stretch we can get. Weight fluxuates as much as 5-10 pounds just with menstration. Cotton is unforgiving.
The shortrow update to look at my holes is out! 🎉
Yes! I did a little happy dance when I received the update! Tempted to cast on a new one 😄
You have a such a thoughtful voice in this community and I can see that even an intentional approach may create pressures to engage with your hobby in a way that is not always on your own terms. I think we all feel that to a certain extent in the age of social media. I want to add that not only is it OK knit (or not knit) what you want and wear what you want, but that we never needed to give ourselves permission in the first place! I hope this craft continues to be a joyous and fulfilling part of your life❤
I’ve decided I’m done knitting mohair - it’s so nice to knit and the garments look so beautiful but I NEVER wear my garments with it! Honestly even in the winter, because everywhere has heat indoors, I end up overheating or getting itchy
I HEAR you!!
I totally agree with this 100% too 🙃
For an elastic to use in a stretched out neckline, try using the clear stretchy elastic that is used for beaded bracelets. Its washable and durable
It was so interesting to hear your thoughts and insights on your knitwear through a month of wearing them!
I love that you mention about the fibre content of your knit tops and how they can be a possible deterrent to wanting to actually wear them in warmer weather. I was once much more frivolous in my pursuit of knitting garments and often did not stop to consider if the fibre content would necessarily be appropriate for the project. While I wouldn't consider it a mistake, it has certainly been a learning process and has helped to guide me in a more thoughtful direction when choosing more appropriate yarns for projects.
These types of videos are so fun to watch and listen to, and I appreciate your honesty with your thoughts and feelings towards your knits. I feel like I learn so much from the experiences of others and I have certainly learned a lot from you through the past year! Looking forward to more videos like this in the future :)
Hi, Emily!
I just wanted to tell you that your reflections always make me re-think how I want my relationship with knitting and knitted items to be. I’m making intentional choices this year with what I want to make and I’m using gift knits as a reason to knit things I want the process, but not the product, of. I’ve also been prioritizing fiber choice and have reached the conclusion that some luxurious fibers will serve me better in the long run than big-box store yarns. Also, wool isn’t the most practical thing to be knitting summer tops with for the Louisiana heat where I live. My knitting self talk is much more practical and intentional, so I just want to thank you for that! I’m looking forward to more videos from you, especially about your summer knits! 🖤🖤🖤
Thank you!! Fellow Emily !!
I've been sewing and designing my own clothes for many years, and still can't do Me Made May all the way through. I agree, make and wear what you love. Great insights Emily!
Really appreciate your thoughts on wearability and process knitting. Knitting definitely reminds me that mistakes happen, imperfection is ok and joy comes through the entire process.
Sometimes you just want to make the pattern but not necessarily get lot of wear out of it. Like you say learning new skills and having fun can be the goal.
Thank you for posting and discussing this! I have felt guilty not wearing my knits more when I’ve spent so much time making them! But thank you for the reminder that it’s okay! And just like with other clothing, there are ebbs and flows in our style ❤
Very interesting. I love hearing your perspective and I'm glad that you are so critical of fit issues and how you might work through them in knitting. You make me think. :)
I wear my knits every day, from socks to sweaters and cardigans, to tees. I'm too busty and too old to wear a bralette, but this year I'm going to make a skirt and maybe a pair of above-the-knee shorts in linen. Thanks for your podcasts. Jacki
A big exception to summer wool is socks. I wear my smart wool socks year around. Wool breaths better than cotton and evaporates better. Both absorb well, but you dont want cotton to hold the mousture. I plan to try wool linen blends for summer tops. I orefer the elasticity of the wool for comfort of knitting and evaporation and I think linnen evaporates better than cotton but I wont know for sure until I'm done with my drawing sweater (I'm knitting off gauge. I wanted smaller scale flowers anyway). I haven't finished handknit socks yet, but when it's done, I will wear them in the summer the same as my smart wool. Now the alpaca socks when I get to them will be winter socks. Probably house socks.
I've been tracking the clothes and accessories I wear for over a year now. I focus on cost per use for my pieces, and my lowest cost per use is $0.09! It makes me feel like I'm really getting the most out of my clothes.
Wow that’s so impressive!!
I thought this was an excellent episode and I found it super interesting as did your sentiments. I do think with all the social media telling you what you should knit next..it impacts a person choices to bias that direction versus something they wear or want. Thanks for sharing! - All the best, Kimberly
Thank you!! I’m thinking we may be due for another installation on Instagram Inspiration and Intentionality!
I can’t really bear mohair anyway because my skin is so sensitive. I can wear the softest mohair barely. 100% cotton or linen is not elastic for knitting so I’m looking for alternatives, wool & cotton mix or superwash merino wool perhaps. I like the Monica Geller tee concept. I might knit that one but I got so many summer knitting in mind!
It was so interesting to see your styled outfit and even more to hear you reflect on your fiber choices and how these knits wear over time, because that's something not often talked about in podcast episodes. Going into my first spring/summer as a knitter, I've been looking for summer appropriate yarns over the past weeks because I don't see myself wearing wool close to skin when it gets hot and humid.
For your camisoles and the length: What I often do in summer instead of tucking if there's too much fabric, is to tie a knot into the garment, or use a hair tie / elastic to tie it and then tuck that to the inside. I find that this often works better with movement and takes a lot of excess fabric away from being too close to skin + too warm.
Thanks so much for this video! I found it so useful, especially since I'm getting ready to brace myself for the hot and humid Japanese summer, and I've been wanting to knit myself some more short-sleeved and sleeveless tops and my daughter keeps reminding me that I never wear them! so far everything I've knit has been in wool, except for a linen tank top, but like you said about your one, I find it the linen heavy. I'll do some more research about different fibers before making any more tops haha
I love how you analyze the fit and construction of patterns. This review of fibers and pattern styles was so interesting.
Thank you!
Honestly loved watching this video, it was so insightful and really makes me also think about my own knitwear and how much I actually wear it. It's so good to think about these things so we can learn about what we like and implement that into our future makes! Thanks for this video!
I recently did some modifications on summer tops I knit last year (redoing armholes and overdyeing) and I can definitely recommend doing the modifications you need to make your tops work!!
I love to see people wearing their knits, so love this video. Have you ever thought about dyeing some of your completed pieces for the ones which colors you don't like? I've thought about it and have re-dyed store bought items, but am too afraid to mess with knits I've made.
I also think working on different techniques such as colorwork as you said or lace or pockets or something is becoming more my mindset rather than knitting a sweater, a cardigan, a skirt. I think trying out different techniques makes me a happier knitter rather than necessarily having something to have as a staple in my wardrobe. It's a fine line between the hobby and practice of knitting and the actual enjoyment of wearing the piece/item
Yes! I have considered dyeing a blue sweater I love the fit and Fiber of, but the blue doesn’t make me feel great. I too am a bit reluctant because I’m not too sure what color to overstep would be most effective, but I could always try to go for a dark brown or grey over the blue to neutralize it.
Your analysis of your knitting is so insightful! It always makes my day when you post--us stem girlies really are a different kind of knitter, and I love your approach both to your craft and your communication style
Thank you so much Kelli!
I really *love* wool and do not like cotton or linen - to work with or wear. So I have found that in summer, knit garments just arent my go to! Instead, I wear plain store-bought t-shirts with a shawl. I enjoy making and wearing the shawl more than a tank, and I can peel it off if it's too hot (or leave it on for sun protection!).
The linen tank is beautiful! Please just shorten it because it is absolutely gorgeous.
I was so shocked by 10 days at first and then I realized "oh ya she doesnt knit socks!!!!!" i wear a knit literally every day ty socks :)
Omg I didn’t even THINK to include socks! I knit a lot of them in 2021 but not as many in 2022. I’m currently working on my first fingering weight socks of the year after a lot of DK socks with mohair, so stay tuned!
Emily, I’ve been to Toronto in the summer and hate it, it’s soooo humid and sticky!!! 😆I can see how it might be frustrating to find the perfect fabric for tees and tanks…but in Edmonton I can wear wool year round! I made 3 tanks last year and love them with layers, cause the climate is perfect. I think there might be 30 days/year I can’t wear my knits!!😂it also took me 2 years of knitting to figure out what I’ll knit, I love colour work but won’t knit it, too much stimulation on the garment for me. Social media can be evil! 😅happy knitting!
You should challenge yourself to modify the parts of your knits that you don't like (too cropped/too long/straps too thin) - you put so much effort into these knits, how great would it be to get more use out of them? :)
So nice pieces, especially camisoles 👍love your stile and your color choices 👌I think, I also want to knit this Look at my holes top)
Hi Emily, I have a question regarding Linea yarn you used for Tolsta Tee - did it grow much in length after washing/blocking? Thank you 🙏
Not much! I think it’s the linen content
can you put in the comments a list of the patterns? the first tee I cannot find
The Tolsta Gee will be released May 12th!

I really appreciated the sentiments at the end. It kind of sound like the Addams Groove by MC Hammer. Was that just coincidence or have you been watching 90s movies?
Just a coincidence! I have a few tunes from the free TH-cam studio library that I like to use depending on the vibe of the video! 😂
@@highfiberknits Haha. I meant the words you said. Reminded me of the lyrics so I started singing in my head.
what's the pattern for the gray sleeveless tank top
The one in the thumbnail is cami no4 by my favorite things knitwead
Great video! My husband is visiting Toronto next week. Which yarn stores do you recommend if I send him to find some locally produced yarn/fibers or yarns that are closer to the farm/sheep? And in general, which are your favorite stores? 😊
Great question! I always recommend The Knitting Loft and EweKnit becuase they carry a good mix of yarns!
There are a lot of downsides to living in Alberta, but it's also cold and dry enough to wear wool like 10 months of the year 😆
Not knitting related, but your skin looks amazing!
I’m trying to find the “ Tolsta tee” on ravelry but I know I’m not spelling it right. Can you spell it for me ?
That’s the correct spelling but it hasn’t been released yet. It should be coming in the next few weeks. Designer is Rebecca Clow aka The CreaBea
Question when in comes to fiber for summer tops. What is a summer fiber option that’s stretchy like wool? I want negative ease but I’ve seen that fibers like cotton and silk don’t have much stretch.
Great question! I typically suggest a wool cotton blend. My favorite is the knitting for olive cotton merino because it is mostly cotton. Some else in these comments suggested adding a viscose + elastase strand to the knitting for some snap back!
Please stop making ads for merit. It looks so lovely, so no-makeup, totally my cup of tea. But I can‘t buy it in Germany. 😢
